How to Fix PS5 Download Speeds That Are Slower Than Expected

A slow PS5 download is usually a diagnosis problem rather than proof that the console is defective. First check PlayStation Network status and run the console’s connection test. Then compare Wi‑Fi with Ethernet, restart the router for at least five minutes, check storage and system software, and only then use game-specific recovery steps. Each comparison tells you whether the likely cause is PSN, your home network, the PS5, or one particular game update.

What “slow” means on a PS5

There is no official universal download-speed target for PS5 consoles, and PlayStation does not publish a benchmark promising a particular transfer rate. A connection test result is useful evidence about the path between your console and the internet, but it does not guarantee that every game or system download will transfer at that same rate. Treat a single slow transfer as a symptom to investigate, not as proof of a PlayStation Network outage or failing hardware.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Separate the problem into five questions:

  • Are PlayStation services having an outage or maintenance window?
  • Is the PS5 slower than other devices on the same network?
  • Does Ethernet behave differently from Wi‑Fi?
  • Is every download affected, or only one game or update?
  • Does the console have enough free storage and current system software?

The answer that changes when you make a controlled comparison points to the next fix.

Use these comparisons to identify the likely cause

Comparison What the result suggests Next action
PS5 versus another device on the same network If phones, computers, or another console are also slow, suspect the router, Wi‑Fi coverage, ISP, or a wider service problem. Check service status, restart the router/modem, and contact the ISP or network administrator if the slowdown persists.
Wi‑Fi versus Ethernet on the PS5 A substantially better wired result points to wireless interference, distance, or coverage rather than the PS5’s internet service. Use Ethernet when practical, or move the console closer to the router and remove obstructions.
One game/update versus all downloads If only one title is affected, investigate its update or installation state before changing the entire network. Restart the PS5, check system software, and use reinstall or Safe Mode recovery only if the problem continues.
Service status versus local tests An outage or maintenance notice can explain a broad PSN symptom; a normal status page does not rule out a local problem. Do not infer an outage from one slow transfer. Repeat the test after local checks.
Free storage and software version Low storage or outdated system software can turn a download into an update or installation failure rather than a pure speed issue. Free space, install available system updates, and retry before deleting anything.

Step 1: Check PlayStation Network status and measure the PS5

Check the official service status first

Open PlayStation’s PS5 connection troubleshooting guidance and the PlayStation 5 error-code page, including the service-status link provided there. If the status page reports an outage or maintenance affecting downloads, changing router settings will not repair that service-side condition. Wait for the service to recover and test again.

It also supports Power over Ethernet (PoE, PoE+, PoE++) for powering devices like IP cameras, VoIP phones, and wireless access points, ensuring fast and reliable network performance.

A green status page is not a speed guarantee. It only means PlayStation has not identified a broad service incident at that moment. A single slow game transfer can still result from your Wi‑Fi, ISP path, available storage, or that title’s update process.

Run the PS5 connection test

  1. On the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
  2. Select Network.
  3. Choose Test Internet Connection.
  4. Record the displayed connection results, then run the download again under the same conditions so you can compare changes rather than relying on memory.

Use the result as a clue about the console’s network path. It is not a promise that a particular game will sustain the same rate, so do not treat the test number as a guaranteed download speed.

For a useful baseline, pause streaming, cloud backups, large computer downloads, and other console activity while you test. Note whether the problem appears at a particular time of day and whether it affects a new game, a patch, or system software. Those observations help separate a busy home connection from a title-specific problem without changing several variables at once.

Step 2: Compare Wi‑Fi with a wired connection

Run a controlled Ethernet test

If you can place the PS5 near the router temporarily, connect it directly with an Ethernet cable and repeat the connection test and download. Keep the comparison fair: test the same title, at roughly the same time, with other heavy network activity paused. A cable of suitable category and length is sufficient; Cat 6 is an optional, commonly available choice for conducting the test, not a requirement and not a promise that your internet plan will become faster.

PlayStation recommends a wired connection where possible. If the wired result is consistently better, the evidence points to the wireless link. You can then choose between leaving the PS5 wired, improving router placement, or addressing coverage rather than repeatedly reinstalling games.

An Ethernet comparison is valuable even when the cable run is temporary. It answers whether the console’s wireless path is the limiting step. It does not prove that the router, cable, or PS5 is capable of a specific speed, and it does not change the bandwidth purchased from the ISP. Compare several minutes of the same download rather than one momentary percentage shown on the progress bar.

If Ethernet is not practical

  • Move the PS5 closer to the router.
  • Remove furniture, cabinets, or other objects that obstruct the path between console and router.
  • Temporarily pause other high-bandwidth activity while measuring the download.
  • Repeat the test after each change so you know which change mattered.

These are diagnostic steps supported by PlayStation’s guidance, not guaranteed speed increases. If Wi‑Fi and Ethernet are similarly slow while other devices are also affected, continue with the router and ISP checks.

  • The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.

Step 3: Restart the router or modem correctly

When the PS5 remains slow or unstable, power off the router or modem, leave it off for at least five minutes, and then restart it. The five-minute pause is PlayStation’s troubleshooting instruction; it is not a measured promise of a particular improvement.

  1. Stop the PS5 download or note its current state.
  2. Turn off the router/modem using its normal power control.
  3. Wait at least five minutes.
  4. Power the equipment back on and wait until its normal connection indicators return.
  5. Run Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection on the PS5 and retry the download.

Router interfaces and update procedures differ by manufacturer and internet provider. Use the device maker’s or ISP’s instructions for checking firmware; do not apply menu paths from a different model. If every device remains slow after the restart, contact the ISP or network administrator rather than repeatedly changing PS5 settings.

A firmware check is worthwhile when the router maker or ISP documents one, but avoid guessing at settings such as channels, DNS values, or security modes. The official steps support restarting equipment and following the vendor’s update instructions; they do not establish one universal menu path or configuration that makes every PS5 faster.

Step 4: Rule out storage, software, and one-download failures

Check available PS5 storage

Open the PS5 storage screen from Settings > Storage and verify that Console Storage has enough free space for the download and installation. A download that reaches the console but cannot finish installing is an installation problem, not necessarily a slow internet connection. Remove or move content only after confirming what is consuming space, and keep any saved-data backup you need.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watch for the difference between a progress indicator that advances slowly and one that completes downloading but fails during copying or installation. The second pattern points you toward storage or the title’s update process. Freeing space can resolve an installation failure, but it cannot repair a PSN outage or weak wireless signal.

Install current system software

For game or application update trouble, PlayStation’s update instructions recommend testing the internet connection, restarting the console, and checking that system software is current. An outdated system can produce an update failure even when ordinary browsing or other downloads work.

Restart before destructive recovery

Restart the PS5 normally and retry the affected download. This is a reversible step and should come before deleting a game or entering Safe Mode. If only one title fails while other downloads complete normally, record any displayed error code and treat that title as a separate branch.

Use reinstall or Safe Mode only when necessary

If the update or installation still fails after the connection, restart, storage, and software checks, PlayStation lists deleting and reinstalling the game or using Safe Mode to clear the cache and rebuild the database as later recovery options. Reinstalling can require downloading the game again, so do not use it as the first response to a merely slow transfer. Follow the on-screen Safe Mode instructions and make sure you understand which option you are selecting before confirming it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PlayStation’s error index identifies NP-102947-3 as: “The internet connection is too slow or unstable to perform the update.” That wording describes an update connection condition; it does not establish that the PS5 hardware is defective. The same index lists separate service, connection, storage, and download/install errors, so use the exact code to choose the appropriate branch.

Step 5: Use Rest Mode for unattended downloads, not as a speed boost

Rest Mode can let eligible downloads continue while you are away, but PlayStation does not say that it increases transfer speed. To keep the console online, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and enable the option to stay connected to the internet.

PlayStation states: “While connected to the internet in rest mode, you can download games bought on PlayStation App and pre-ordered games to your console.” Automatic game and system-software updates can also be enabled in the power-saving settings. The feature is therefore useful for scheduling or unattended downloads, not for overcoming a slow Wi‑Fi link, congested ISP connection, or PSN incident. See the official power-saving and Rest Mode guidance for the current options.

Before leaving the console unattended, confirm it is actually connected to the internet in Rest Mode and that the desired automatic-download options are enabled. Rest Mode changes the console’s availability while you are away; it does not alter the network route, remove congestion, or guarantee that a queued update will finish by a particular time.

Interpret the result and choose the next escalation

What you observe Most useful next step
PSN status reports an incident Wait for service recovery and retry later; avoid unnecessary router or storage changes.
All household devices are slow Restart the router/modem, check the ISP’s firmware guidance, and contact the ISP or network administrator if performance remains poor.
Only the PS5 is slow on Wi‑Fi but improves on Ethernet Use the wired connection when practical or improve console placement and wireless coverage.
PS5 is slow on both Wi‑Fi and Ethernet while other services work Check PlayStation status again, note any error code, and contact PlayStation Support if the condition persists.
Only one game or update fails Check storage and system software, restart, then consider the documented reinstall or Safe Mode options.
The download completes but installation fails Treat it as a storage or installation problem; verify free space and follow the game/update recovery steps rather than changing internet equipment first.

Use the smallest next step that matches the evidence. A PS5-only Wi‑Fi issue calls for placement or a wired comparison, while a household-wide slowdown belongs with the router or ISP. A single title that fails after other downloads succeed deserves its error code, storage check, and update recovery path rather than a wholesale network reset.

Common PS5 slow-download situations

“My phone is fast, but the PS5 is slow.”

That comparison does not yet isolate Wi‑Fi. Phones may be closer to the router or use a different wireless band and antenna arrangement. Run the PS5 connection test, then compare it with Ethernet. A wired improvement is evidence that the console’s wireless path needs attention; it is not evidence that buying a particular cable will raise the speed of your internet plan.

“The test looks normal, but one update crawls.”

A normal test does not guarantee a uniform rate for every download. Check PlayStation status, verify storage, restart the console, and confirm system software is current. If other games download normally, focus on the affected title’s update or installation state instead of resetting the entire network.

“The download stops or says the connection is unstable.”

Run the connection test and repeat it after the router restart. If the code is NP-102947-3, PlayStation defines it as a connection too slow or unstable to perform the update. Compare Ethernet with Wi‑Fi and check whether other household devices have the same instability. Persistent problems across devices belong with the ISP; a PS5-only problem after a wired test belongs with PlayStation Support.

“I left it in Rest Mode and expected it to finish faster.”

Rest Mode can keep eligible downloads running while the console is unattended when internet connectivity is enabled. It does not change the underlying connection or guarantee a higher transfer rate. If the download is still slow when you return, use the service, Wi‑Fi/Ethernet, router, storage, and software comparisons rather than treating Rest Mode as a speed setting.

What not to do

  • Do not assume a single slow download proves a PSN outage.
  • Do not promise a particular Mbps result or percentage improvement; official support material provides no such benchmark.
  • Do not repeatedly delete and reinstall a game before checking storage, system software, and the network path.
  • Do not apply generic firmware instructions to a router model or ISP service that uses different menus.
  • Do not disconnect the PS5’s AC cord while its power indicator is lit or blinking. PlayStation warns that doing so can cause data loss, corruption, or damage; use the console’s normal power controls instead. The warning appears in the official power-saving guidance.

When to contact support

Contact your ISP or network administrator when multiple devices are slow, Ethernet does not improve the PS5, or the connection repeatedly drops after a proper router restart. Contact PlayStation Support when other services and devices work, the PS5 remains affected on a wired connection, or a specific PlayStation error code continues after the documented checks. Include the exact code, whether the issue affects every download or one title, the result of Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection, and whether Wi‑Fi or Ethernet was used. That information lets support distinguish a service condition, local network problem, and console or installation failure without repeating every step.

If you contact the ISP, report whether the slowdown affects several household devices and whether it remains after the router/modem has been powered off for at least five minutes. If you contact PlayStation, mention the status-page result, the title or update involved, available storage, current system-software status, and any code such as NP-102947-3. Avoid disconnecting power to force a shutdown while the indicator is lit or blinking; use normal controls and the documented recovery process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my PS5 download so slow when other devices seem fast?

Run Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection, then compare the same download over Ethernet. A wired improvement points to Wi‑Fi distance, obstructions, or coverage. If Ethernet is also slow while other services work, check PlayStation status and contact PlayStation Support if the issue persists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a Cat 6 Ethernet cable make PS5 downloads faster?

A suitable Ethernet cable can help you test whether Wi‑Fi is the limiting link, and PlayStation recommends a wired connection where possible. Cat 6 is optional, not required, and the cable does not increase the speed supplied by your internet plan.

How long should I turn off my router for a PS5 download problem?

PlayStation’s troubleshooting instruction is to power off the router or modem and leave it off for at least five minutes before restarting it. Then wait for the normal connection indicators, run the PS5 connection test, and retry the download.

Does Rest Mode increase PS5 download speed?

No speed increase is promised. Rest Mode can keep eligible downloads running while you are away when the console is set to stay connected to the internet. It does not fix a slow Wi‑Fi link, ISP congestion, or a PlayStation Network incident.

What does PS5 error NP-102947-3 mean?

PlayStation Support describes it as: “The internet connection is too slow or unstable to perform the update.” Test the connection, compare Wi‑Fi with Ethernet, restart the router correctly, and check whether other devices have the same instability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my PS5 download finish but fail to install?

That pattern may indicate insufficient Console Storage or an update/install problem rather than slow internet. Check Settings > Storage, confirm system software is current, restart the console, and use reinstall or Safe Mode options only if the documented earlier checks do not resolve it.

Should I delete and reinstall a game because its update is slow?

Not as a first response. Check PlayStation status, test the connection, compare Wi‑Fi and Ethernet, restart the router and PS5, verify storage, and install current system software first. Reinstalling is a later recovery option because it may require downloading the game again.

When should I contact my ISP instead of PlayStation Support?

Contact the ISP or network administrator when multiple devices are slow, the connection repeatedly drops, or the PS5 remains slow on Ethernet after a proper router restart. Contact PlayStation Support when other services work but PS5 downloads remain affected, especially if a specific error code continues.

The Bottom Line

Start with PlayStation Network status and the PS5 connection test. Compare Wi‑Fi with Ethernet, restart the router or modem for at least five minutes, and check storage and system software before using reinstall or Safe Mode recovery. Rest Mode helps downloads continue while you are away, but it is not a speed boost. Let the comparison that changes the result determine whether you contact your ISP, network administrator, or PlayStation Support.
