What CE-43461-8 can indicate
The exact operation matters. Confirm whether the code appeared during a PS4 system update, a game or application update, a download, USB-storage setup, or while the console was starting in Safe Mode. Sony does not currently assign CE-43461-8 a single public meaning.
In practice, the error is commonly reported during failed update activity. Possible causes include an incomplete download, an update file the console cannot read or write, a temporary network or PlayStation Network problem, external USB storage interfering with the process, insufficient or problematic internal storage, or a failing internal hard drive. None of those possibilities is proven by this code alone.

Try these non-destructive fixes first
1. Delete the failed update
- Open Notifications from the PS4 function area.
- Highlight the failed update.
- Press the OPTIONS button and choose Delete.
- Open Settings > System Software Update and try again.
The notification wording can vary by system-software version and language. Deleting a failed update download does not delete installed games or saved data. Sony’s instructions are at PS4 system software.
2. Restart with external storage disconnected
Shut the PS4 down completely before unplugging an external USB drive; do not remove it while the console is reading or writing. Restart with only the internal storage connected, delete the failed update again, and retry. Games installed on the disconnected drive will be unavailable temporarily. This is a useful diagnostic test, not proof that the drive caused the code.
3. Improve the network path
- Restart the router and PS4.
- Use Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi for the next attempt when possible.
- Check the PlayStation service status before repeatedly retrying.
Wired networking can reduce local wireless instability, but it cannot repair corrupted update data or failing storage.
Update the PS4 from USB in Safe Mode
If direct downloads continue to fail, use Sony’s official update file on a computer. This bypasses repeated downloads through the console.

- On a PC or Mac, format a USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT.
- Create a folder named
PS4, then anUPDATEfolder inside it. - Download the official PS4 update file and save it as
PS4UPDATE.PUPinsideUPDATE. - Turn the PS4 off completely.
- Hold the power button and release it after the second beep, approximately seven seconds, to enter Safe Mode.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable, press the PS button, and choose Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device > OK.

Folder names and the filename must be exact, uppercase, and entered with single-byte characters. Use only Sony’s official download; do not use unofficial firmware mirrors. Instructions: PS4 Safe Mode update.
If Safe Mode cannot see the file
- Confirm the drive is FAT32 or exFAT, not an unsupported or encrypted filesystem.
- Check that
PS4UPDATE.PUPis insidePS4/UPDATE, not the USB root. - Make sure you downloaded the PS4 file rather than a PS5 file.
- Re-download the file if it may be incomplete.
- Try another USB port or another USB drive.
- Confirm the console is actually in Safe Mode.
Use Rebuild Database before erasing anything
From Safe Mode, choose 5. Rebuild Database. The PS4 scans the drive and creates a new content database. Sony describes this as a tool for indexing and system-feature problems; it is non-destructive and is not guaranteed to fix CE-43461-8. It can take a long time on a large or slow drive, so do not interrupt it.

When the internal HDD becomes the leading suspect
CE-43461-8 alone does not prove hard-drive failure. The HDD hypothesis becomes stronger when updates fail after external storage is removed and a clean USB attempt is made, or when you also see:
- Several games becoming corrupted.
- Freezes, crashes, or unusually long loading.
- Repeatedly unsuccessful database rebuilds.
- A recurring Safe Mode loop.
- Official storage-related codes such as CE-34335-8 (no HDD detected), CE-34305-5 (failed to read HDD information), or CE-34697-9 (possible HDD issue).
See Sony’s error-code index and its CE-34335-8 guidance. Replacing the internal 2.5-inch SATA drive may help a genuinely failing console, but it requires reinstalling system software and restoring data, and cannot fix a motherboard, power, Blu-ray, or USB-hardware fault.
When to stop troubleshooting and seek repair
Back up data while the PS4 still boots, then use Sony’s repair route if the error persists after a correctly prepared USB installation, the console repeatedly returns to Safe Mode, the internal drive is not detected or readable, or corruption continues after reinstallation. Sony’s update guide directs unresolved Safe Mode and update failures to its repair process: Safe Mode and update support.
Compare a repair or drive replacement quote with the condition and value of the PS4. Avoid opening the internal drive on a PC or running improvised repair commands; those steps can increase data-loss risk and are not Sony’s consumer procedure.

Does Rebuild Database delete saved data?
It is intended to recreate the content index without erasing user data. It can take a long time and is not a guaranteed CE-43461-8 fix.
