The dependable fix is to deploy the complete Qt runtime built for your application: rebuild in the intended release configuration, run windeployqt from the exact Qt kit, keep Qt5Network.dll beside the executable, place Qt plugins in their required subfolders, and test the finished folder on a computer without Qt installed.
Qt5Network.dll is the Qt 5 Network module runtime, not a Windows system component. The dialog normally means that deployment is incomplete, Windows is searching the wrong location, or the DLL does not match the application’s Qt version, architecture, build mode, or compiler ABI.

What the Qt5Network.dll error means
A Qt application that uses networking links to the Qt Network module. On Windows, that module is delivered as Qt5Network.dll alongside other Qt runtime libraries such as Qt5Core.dll and Qt5Gui.dll. The executable must be able to find a compatible copy when it starts.

Typical messages include “Qt5Network.dll was not found,” “The code execution cannot proceed because Qt5Network.dll was not found,” or a launch that fails without a useful message. These messages do not prove that the file alone is the only missing component. A networking module can depend on additional Qt libraries, plugins, compiler runtime files, ICU libraries, or OpenSSL libraries, depending on how the program was built.

Why it works in Qt Creator but not from Explorer
Qt Creator normally launches an application with the selected Qt kit’s environment available. That environment can include the Qt bin directory in the process search path, so the development run finds the libraries even when they are absent from the application directory. Launching the same executable from Explorer, a shortcut, or another computer does not automatically reproduce that development environment.
A deployable Windows package should therefore be self-contained. The application directory, rather than a developer workstation’s environment variables, should provide the Qt libraries and the correctly arranged plugins.
Should you download Qt5Network.dll by itself?
Usually, no. A standalone DLL obtained from an unknown download site may have the wrong Qt minor version, 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, debug or release flavor, or compiler ABI. Even if the filename matches, Windows can reject the binary or the application can fail later when another dependency is loaded. An unknown file also creates a security and provenance risk.
Use one of these sources instead:
| Source or remedy | Trust and compatibility | Completeness | How to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| The application vendor’s installer or deployment package | Best choice for an end user because it should match that specific build | Normally includes the complete runtime and plugins selected by the vendor | Install or repair the official package, then launch the application again |
| The exact Qt kit used to build your application | Appropriate for a developer when the Qt version, architecture, build mode, and compiler are known | Requires you to deploy every dependent library and plugin, not just one DLL | Run windeployqt and test on a clean machine |
| A random DLL download site | Unverified; may provide an incompatible or altered binary | Usually omits dependent modules, plugins, and runtime files | There is no reliable deployment verification for an unknown file |
The official Qt deployment workflow is dependency-based. Replacing one missing filename is not equivalent to deploying the runtime that the executable was built to use.
Developer fix: deploy the application with windeployqt
For a Qt 5 Windows application, windeployqt is the first-line deployment tool. It analyzes the executable and copies the Qt libraries, plugins, QML imports, and translations it identifies as needed.
- Build the intended release. Select the release configuration that you will distribute, then rebuild the application. Do not copy files from a debug build into a release package or vice versa. Keep the architecture and compiler toolchain consistent with the Qt kit.
- Open the command prompt for that exact Qt kit. Use the Qt installation and kit that built the executable. A different Qt installation can contain a different minor version, architecture, compiler ABI, or build configuration.
- Run windeployqt against the executable. Replace the example path with the actual release executable. Quote a path if it contains spaces:
windeployqt C:pathtoMyApp.exe - Inspect the generated directory. Confirm that the matching
Qt5Network.dllis besideMyApp.exe, along with the other Qt modules used by the program. Do not move plugin DLLs into the root directory just to make the first error disappear. - Add non-Qt runtime files required by your build. Depending on the Qt build and features used, the package may also need compiler runtime files and ICU or OpenSSL libraries. A successful copy of
Qt5Network.dlldoes not guarantee that these secondary requirements are present. - Test outside the development environment. Copy the complete deployment folder to a computer that does not have Qt or the compiler installed. Launch the executable there. This catches accidental reliance on a developer machine’s PATH and exposes missing plugins or secondary DLLs before distribution.
QML applications
If the application uses QML, tell the deployment tool where the project’s QML files are located so it can find the imports that are loaded at runtime:
windeployqt --qmldir C:pathtoqml C:pathtoMyApp.exe
Use the QML directory associated with the executable you are packaging. A QML plugin or imported module can introduce another Qt dependency that is not obvious from the main executable alone.
Required folder layout
A normal Qt 5 Windows deployment has the executable and its core runtime libraries at the top level, with plugins in type-specific subdirectories:
MyApp.exe Qt5Core.dll Qt5Gui.dll Qt5Network.dll [other Qt modules used] platforms qwindows.dll [compiler runtime and optional ICU/OpenSSL DLLs as required]
Qt5Network.dll normally sits beside the application executable. The Windows platform plugin belongs at platformsqwindows.dll, not beside MyApp.exe. The exact list of modules varies with the project and toolchain, so do not copy every DLL from a Qt installation indiscriminately.

What to check when windeployqt does not copy Qt5Network.dll
The tool analyzes the executable supplied to it. A module loaded only by a plugin, a QML import, or a secondary DLL can introduce a dependency that is not visible in the first pass. Treat a missing Qt5Network.dll as a dependency-chain problem rather than immediately downloading a replacement.
- Confirm the executable path. Run the command against the actual release executable, not a stale debug binary, an intermediate build artifact, or a launcher that loads another program.
- Confirm the kit. Use the Qt kit that produced the executable. Check the Qt major and minor version, 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, debug or release mode, and compiler toolchain.
- Review plugins and secondary DLLs. A plugin may load Qt Network at runtime even when the main executable does not import it directly. Inspect the complete dependency chain used by the application and identify any dynamically loaded component.
- Copy the matching file only from the same Qt installation. If analysis proves that the file is needed but it was not copied, manually copy
Qt5Network.dllfrom the exact Qt kit’s runtime directory into the application directory, then continue checking the other dependencies. Do not substitute a file from another kit. - Repeat the clean-machine test. A package that works only on a computer with Qt installed is not yet a verified deployment.
Compatibility checks that prevent repeat failures
The filename is only one part of compatibility. Before replacing a DLL, compare the application and the candidate runtime across all of these dimensions:
- Qt version: The module must belong to the Qt version used to build the application. A different Qt minor release can change the expected binary interface or dependency set.
- Architecture: A 32-bit application needs 32-bit Qt libraries; a 64-bit application needs 64-bit libraries. Matching the Windows edition alone is not enough.
- Build mode: Keep debug components with debug builds and release components with release builds. Debug and release runtimes are not interchangeable.
- Compiler ABI: The compiler and runtime assumptions used by the Qt kit must match those used by the application and any native plugins.
- Module set: Qt Network is normally used with other Qt modules. Copying only one file can simply move the failure to the next missing dependency.
- Plugin paths: Qt plugins must remain in their type-specific directories, including the
platformsdirectory forqwindows.dll.
If you are an end user of a Qt application
If you did not build the program yourself, the safest repair is to obtain the application’s official installer or deployment package from its publisher. Reinstalling or repairing that package restores the matching Qt runtime as a set. A lone DLL from a search result does not tell you which Qt version, architecture, compiler, plugins, or optional libraries the application requires.
- Close the application and any updater associated with it.
- Use the publisher’s installer or the operating system’s installed-app repair option if one is provided.
- If the program was extracted from an archive, obtain a fresh archive from the publisher and extract it to a new folder rather than mixing files with the old installation.
- Launch the repaired installation from its own executable. If the same message remains, report the exact Windows message and application version to the publisher; the package may be missing more than
Qt5Network.dll.
Do not copy a DLL from another application. Two programs can both use Qt while requiring different versions, architectures, or compiler builds.
Diagnosing a deployment that still fails
The message changes to another missing DLL
This usually indicates that the first missing file was only one item in an incomplete deployment. Return to the executable’s deployment folder, rerun windeployqt from the correct kit, and check the complete list of Qt modules, plugins, compiler runtime files, and optional ICU or OpenSSL libraries required by the build.
The application reports a platform plugin error
Check that platformsqwindows.dll exists under a directory named exactly platforms beside the executable. Do not flatten the folder or rename the plugin. A correctly placed Qt5Network.dll cannot compensate for a missing Windows platform plugin.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The program works on the developer PC but not on a clean PC
This is a strong sign that the developer machine is supplying a library through its Qt installation, compiler installation, or environment variables. Recreate the deployment folder with the exact kit, remove any accidental dependency on global PATH entries, and test again on a machine without Qt or the compiler installed.
The program starts but networking features fail
A successful launch proves only that the initial runtime dependencies were found. Networking can still depend on a plugin or optional library loaded later. Review dynamically loaded components and the Qt build’s ICU or OpenSSL requirements, then retest the specific network operation in the clean deployment.
Why a clean-machine test matters
Testing on a computer without Qt and the compiler installed is the practical way to distinguish a self-contained package from one that works by accident. The test should use the exact folder you intend to distribute, with no extra DLLs copied from a development installation. Launch the application, exercise the networking paths, open any QML views, and check that platform plugins load. If a failure appears, fix the package and repeat the test rather than adding arbitrary files until the error disappears.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Downloading the first
Qt5Network.dllresult from an unknown website. - Mixing a DLL from a different Qt minor version or compiler kit.
- Putting a debug build’s runtime beside a release executable.
- Mixing 32-bit and 64-bit binaries.
- Copying
qwindows.dllinto the application root instead ofplatforms. - Assuming that one DLL is the entire Qt runtime.
- Testing only on a workstation that already has Qt installed.
- Leaving the application dependent on a developer-only PATH setting.
