If Red Dead Redemption 2 will not let you open a door or enter a building, first check that you are at the mission’s intended entrance and have completed the required interaction. Similar-looking problems can come from a missed objective, the wrong control, a failed story trigger, or an online-session soft-lock. There is no confirmed universal fix; work through the checks below in order, starting with the least disruptive.
Check the objective and make sure you have the right door
Read the current objective and listen to the mission dialogue before trying to force an entrance. Some missions put an unusable door close to the one you need. In the Chapter 2 mission “Polite Society, Valentine Style,” a player discussion notes that two nearby hotel doors can be confused; it also raises whether the player spoke to the desk clerk first. Check for a required conversation or other mission step, then try the entrance indicated by the objective: Steam Community discussion.

Try the interaction that fits the situation
Ordinary door interaction and kicking a door are not necessarily the same action. Wait for an on-screen prompt and use the interaction or melee input mapped for your platform. Controls can vary by platform and by PC key bindings.
If you are trying to kick a door
In a PC discussion about the Valentine mission, players suggest approaching without running, keeping Arthur’s hands empty, waiting for the prompt, and trying the melee interaction. One contributor says running into the door while pressing the melee key worked for them. These are inconsistent player suggestions, not guaranteed instructions: Steam Community discussion.

For the opening cover tutorial, look for cover—not a door prompt
If Dutch tells you to take cover during the opening snow mission, the instruction may refer to cover at the cattle shed rather than entering through the house door. A GameFAQs answer for that specific tutorial identifies R1 as the PlayStation cover control. This advice is limited to that scenario; use the displayed prompt for your platform: GameFAQs discussion.
If a story mission door still will not trigger
Once you have confirmed the correct entrance, objective, and interaction, try reloading the latest save or restarting the game. These are general recovery checks, not a Rockstar-confirmed door-specific repair. In the Valentine hotel-mission discussion, players also report letting the mission fail and choosing “skip checkpoint” to get past the blocked interaction. That skips the checkpoint sequence, and the result is anecdotal rather than official guidance: Steam Community discussion.

If Arthur freezes entering a Moonshine Shack in Red Dead Online
An online character freezing at a building entrance is different from a story mission failing to recognize a door prompt. In one Moonshine Shack report, a reply suggests changing lobbies or returning to Online > Free Roam. Try changing session before considering more disruptive measures; this is a player-reported workaround, not an officially confirmed fix: Steam Community discussion.

Include your platform, whether you are in Story Mode or Red Dead Online, the mission and objective, the exact location, whether an interaction prompt appears, and the steps you have already tried.
