Windows error 0x80070057 means The parameter is incorrect. It is a general Windows status code, not a diagnosis of one single fault. The right repair depends on whether it appeared in Windows Update, during an upgrade or installation, in System Restore, while restoring a backup, or in another recovery task.

Back up important files first. Then run the Windows Update troubleshooter when an update is involved, repair the Windows component store with DISM followed by System File Checker, and retry after a restart. If the error began immediately after an update, use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) to uninstall that update or run System Restore. Use a recovery drive or bootable installation media only after the less disruptive options fail.

What error 0x80070057 means

Microsoft describes 0x80070057 as The parameter is incorrect. In practical terms, a Windows component received a setting, file, permission, or other value it could not accept. The same hexadecimal code can therefore appear in several unrelated operations.

Microsoft’s Windows Update guidance associates the code with corrupted files, permission problems, and incorrect system configuration. Those are possibilities rather than a guaranteed diagnosis. A failed update, a restore point, a backup job, and a feature upgrade can all stop at the same code for different reasons.

The code itself is not evidence that a computer contains malware. Treat it as a clue about the operation that failed and record the exact screen, update number, application, or recovery option that produced it. That detail determines which remedy is safest.

First identify where the failure occurred

Use the row that best matches what you saw. If more than one row applies, start with the least disruptive path that addresses the earliest failure.

Protect your files before repairing Windows

Copy documents, photos, saved games, browser exports, and any other irreplaceable data to an external drive or a trusted cloud location before changing update or recovery settings. If Windows still starts, copy the files directly and verify that the copies open. If Windows does not start, use another computer and appropriate recovery media to access the drive, or obtain professional help before reinstalling.

A restore point is not a personal-file backup. System Restore is intended to roll back system files and settings; Microsoft says it does not remove personal files, but it can affect recently installed applications, drivers, and system configuration. Keep a separate backup even when you plan to use a restore point.

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

For an error raised by Windows Update, start with Microsoft’s built-in troubleshooter. The wording differs slightly between Windows releases, but on current Windows 11 builds the path is:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System, then Troubleshoot.
  3. Choose Other troubleshooters.
  4. Find Windows Update and select Run.
  5. Apply any repair the troubleshooter offers and restart when prompted.

On some Windows 10 installations, the entry is under Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters. If the troubleshooter reports that it could not repair the problem, continue with the system-file sequence below rather than repeatedly running the same scan.

Repair Windows system files with DISM and SFC

Microsoft documents a specific order: run Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) first, then System File Checker (SFC). DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source; SFC then checks protected system files against that repaired store.

  1. Save open work and sign in to an administrator account.
  2. Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  3. At the elevated prompt, enter DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and press Enter.
  4. Wait for DISM to finish. Progress can pause for a while; do not close the window merely because the percentage appears unchanged.
  5. When DISM reports completion, run sfc /scannow.
  6. Allow the verification to reach 100 percent. Read the final message; it will state whether Windows found and repaired integrity violations, found none, or could not repair some files.
  7. Restart Windows and try the update, restore, or installation again.

Run both commands in the same order. Starting with SFC when the component store is damaged can leave SFC without a reliable repair source. If either command reports an error, keep the exact message and code; it is useful when deciding whether to move to WinRE or recovery media.

Check services, configuration, and interference

If the troubleshooter and system-file repair do not clear the error, Windows may be unable to reach an update service, may be using an invalid configuration, or may be encountering interference from a driver or another system component. Make targeted checks instead of applying registry edits or third-party “cleaner” procedures as universal fixes.

Confirm the update services are available

  1. Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Locate Windows Update, Background Intelligent Transfer Service, and Cryptographic Services.
  3. For each service, check that it is not disabled. If an expected service is stopped, use its context menu to start it, then retry the update.
  4. If a service refuses to start, note the displayed error instead of changing permissions or registry values at random.

Names and startup controls can differ by Windows edition. Do not disable security or update services simply to make an installation proceed; that can hide the underlying configuration problem.

Check basic system configuration

  • Confirm that you are using an administrator account when the operation requires one.
  • Verify that Windows has a valid date, time, and time zone; an incorrect clock can make update validation fail.
  • Disconnect nonessential peripherals while retrying an upgrade, particularly if the failure began after a hardware or driver change.
  • Temporarily test whether a recently installed driver or system utility is involved. Restore the previous configuration if the test changes nothing.

These checks are diagnostic. They do not prove that a particular service, clock setting, or driver caused 0x80070057, so change one factor at a time and retry the original operation.

If the error started after a Windows update

A newly installed update can change system files or configuration in a way that prevents the next boot or recovery operation. Windows Recovery Environment provides a documented way to remove the most recent quality or feature update without performing a full reinstall.

  1. Open Settings > System > Recovery and select Advanced startup > Restart now. If Windows cannot start, interrupt startup as directed by the recovery screen until WinRE appears.
  2. Choose Troubleshoot, then Advanced options.
  3. Select Uninstall Updates.
  4. Choose the available option, such as uninstalling the latest quality update or the latest feature update, and follow the prompts.
  5. Restart and test the operation that originally produced 0x80070057.

The exact choices depend on which updates Windows has retained. Removing an update is a rollback, not a permanent diagnosis; once Windows is stable, check for a newer corrected update rather than repeatedly uninstalling updates.

Use System Restore when a restore point is the appropriate rollback

System Restore is useful when the problem follows a recent driver, application, or system-configuration change and a suitable restore point exists. Microsoft says it rolls back system files and settings while preserving personal files.

When Windows still starts

  1. Open Control Panel, search for Recovery, and select Open System Restore.
  2. Choose a restore point dated before the failure. Use Scan for affected programs when that option is available to see which applications and drivers may be removed or restored.
  3. Confirm the restore point, close open applications, and allow Windows to restart and complete the operation.

When System Restore itself returns 0x80070057

Retry from WinRE rather than repeatedly launching the same failing session inside normal Windows:

  1. Enter WinRE using Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now, or use the recovery screen shown after failed starts.
  2. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore.
  3. Sign in with an account that has permission to use the restore point.
  4. Choose a different restore point if one is available and let the process finish without powering off the computer.

If every restore point fails, do not assume that personal files are damaged. Move to the update-uninstall option when the timing points to a specific update, then consider recovery media only after the less disruptive paths have been exhausted.

Recover a Windows installation that will not boot

WinRE includes options such as Startup Repair, System Restore, Uninstall Updates, and Command Prompt. Select the option that matches the event that preceded the error. Startup Repair is aimed at boot problems; it is not a general replacement for DISM and SFC when Windows runs normally.

If WinRE cannot repair the installation, Microsoft documents two forms of external media: a recovery drive and bootable Windows installation media created on another working PC. A USB flash drive can be the physical medium, but it must be prepared correctly and may be erased during creation. Use a blank drive or move its contents first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare a recovery drive

  1. On a working Windows PC, open the recovery-drive creation tool from Start search.
  2. Follow the wizard to create the recovery drive on a USB flash drive. Read the warning about erasing the drive before confirming.
  3. Connect the finished drive to the affected PC and boot from USB using the computer’s boot-device menu.
  4. Choose the appropriate repair or recovery option. Keep the backup of personal files available before selecting a reset or reinstall action.

Create bootable installation media

Microsoft also documents creating bootable installation media on another working PC. Use the resulting USB drive to start the affected computer and select repair options first. A clean installation can remove applications and, depending on the choices made, personal data; it is an escalation path, not a first-line fix for 0x80070057.

  • RECOVERY FEATURES: Offers multiple recovery options including system repair, fresh installation, system restore, and data recovery tools for Windows 11

Media creation does not repair the error merely because a USB drive is connected. Its value is that it gives you an independent environment from which to access WinRE, copy files, repair the installation, or reinstall Windows when the internal recovery tools are unavailable.

Choose the least disruptive path that fits your situation

Your situation Recommended order Why this order
Windows boots and Windows Update fails Back up files; run the Windows Update troubleshooter; run DISM then SFC; restart and retry; check services and configuration These steps preserve the installation and personal files while addressing the common update-related causes
The failure follows one identifiable update Back up files; use WinRE to uninstall the latest applicable update; restart and test; run DISM and SFC once stable Rollback directly targets the recent change before more invasive recovery
System Restore fails but Windows boots Back up files; retry with another restore point or from WinRE; use update uninstall when timing points to an update It preserves personal files and avoids reinstalling Windows
Windows does not boot Enter WinRE; try Startup Repair, Uninstall Updates, or System Restore according to the event; prepare external media if WinRE fails External media provides a separate recovery environment when the internal one cannot complete
You have no second PC or suitable USB drive Use the built-in WinRE options first and arrange access to another working PC before attempting media recovery Creating bootable media requires a working computer and correctly prepared USB storage

What not to do

  • Do not delete random registry values or system folders because a forum post lists them as a universal 0x80070057 fix.
  • Do not interrupt DISM, SFC, an update rollback, or System Restore by forcing a shutdown unless the computer is unresponsive for an extended period and you have no safer option.
  • Do not treat a restore point as a backup of documents and photos.
  • Do not erase a USB drive while creating recovery media until its contents have been copied elsewhere.
  • Do not repeat an unsuccessful procedure indefinitely. Record the exact message and move to the next recovery level.

Verify the repair

After each change, restart if Windows requests it and repeat the original action that generated the code. For Windows Update, check whether the same update downloads, installs, and reaches a successful restart. For System Restore, verify that Windows starts normally and that the expected system setting or driver has reverted. For an installation or backup task, repeat that specific task rather than assuming that one successful boot proves the original problem is gone.

If 0x80070057 returns after DISM, SFC, a troubleshooter run, and the appropriate rollback, preserve the logs or final command messages and use Microsoft’s support and recovery documentation or a qualified technician. A repeated code can represent a damaged installation, permissions issue, configuration conflict, or hardware-specific driver interaction; the code alone cannot distinguish among them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

Error 0x80070057 is Windows’ way of reporting that a parameter is incorrect, not a single fault with one universal fix. Back up your files, identify the operation that failed, run the relevant troubleshooter, repair the component store with DISM followed by SFC, and then use WinRE rollback or System Restore when the timing points to a recent change. Reserve recovery drives and bootable installation media for cases in which Windows’ built-in repair paths cannot restore a working system.

After the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut for Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7 that can address more than 100 common issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, and shared DLL files, while also offering settings tweaks, temporary-file cleanup, vulnerability checks, and an app-crash log. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary, no tool repairs every crash, and its free trial is offered by category for at least two days before a paid subscription.
