Sober is an unofficial, experimental Linux runtime for Roblox—not a Roblox-supported client—and its developers warn that it can be unstable or discontinued (Sober project site).
Start by identifying the failure and collecting logs
Note what happens immediately before the problem: no Sober window, a crash or black screen, rejected sign-in, a game-join error, a freeze, or a Roblox website link that does nothing. Logs can help distinguish startup, graphics initialization, authentication, and game-joining failures.
- Open a terminal and run
flatpak run org.vinegarhq.Sober. Save the relevant output if the failure occurs. - Alternatively, inspect
~/.var/app/org.vinegarhq.Sober/data/sober/sober_logs/. - Before sharing logs publicly, review them for private account information. Never post your password, session cookies, or authentication tokens.
VinegarHQ recommends collecting logs when troubleshooting Sober (official troubleshooting guide).
Check compatibility and updates before resetting anything
VinegarHQ lists these minimum requirements: Linux kernel 5.11 or newer, x86-64/AMD64, SSE4.1, and OpenGL ES 3.0. SSE4.2 and Vulkan 1.1 are recommended for a smoother experience (Sober installation requirements). If a requirement is missing, changing a graphics setting is unlikely to solve the underlying incompatibility.

- Update Sober and its Flatpak runtimes using your usual Flatpak update process.
- On NVIDIA systems, check that the host NVIDIA driver and the NVIDIA Flatpak extension versions match. VinegarHQ says a mismatch can stop Sober from using the dedicated GPU; updating Flatpak is one remedy described in its troubleshooting guide.
- If the hybrid-GPU error reads
vkGetPhysicalDeviceSurfacePresentModesKHR failed, VinegarHQ suggests running a Vulkan application such asvkcubeto wake the discrete GPU, then launching Sober. This applies to that documented hybrid-graphics scenario, not every graphics problem.
Fix Vulkan startup or rendering-backend errors
Sober should switch to OpenGL automatically when Vulkan is unavailable. If that fallback does not happen, try enabling OpenGL in Sober’s settings. For routine configuration, use the settings interface or run flatpak run org.vinegarhq.Sober config. The documented configuration-file option is use_opengl: true in ~/.var/app/org.vinegarhq.Sober/config/sober/config.json (Sober FAQ).
Edit the JSON carefully: malformed configuration can prevent Sober from launching. A Vulkan error alone does not mean the graphics card must be replaced; OpenGL is the documented fallback.

Address out-of-video-memory crashes
High-quality textures can exhaust video memory, including on some NVIDIA and older Intel integrated graphics systems. The troubleshooting guide says Sober normally applies a texture-quality fallback automatically. If it does not, it documents these flags under the fflags section of the configuration:
DFIntTextureQualityOverride: 2DFFlagTextureQualityOverrideEnabled: true
If the crash persists, the guide says to try a value of 1 for DFIntTextureQualityOverride. Lower texture quality may reduce visual fidelity, and VinegarHQ cautions that the override cannot guarantee every game will be playable. The project discourages using 0 except as a last resort (texture troubleshooting guidance).

Investigate black screens, artifacts, or freezes when joining
Record the GPU model, graphics driver and Mesa versions, Flatpak runtime, Sober version, desktop session, renderer, affected experience, and relevant logs. These details help separate a Sober startup issue from a driver-, renderer-, or experience-specific failure.
Check whether your installed Sober version includes an applicable fix before changing several settings at once. Flathub’s release notes for version 1.8.0 report fixes for freezes, a rendering bug on certain GPUs, and some Vulkan crashes (Sober on Flathub). A renderer switch or cache clear is not a guaranteed fix for every freeze.

Separate account sign-in failures from game-join errors
If Roblox rejects your account sign-in
The reviewed Sober troubleshooting guide and FAQ do not provide a credential-login repair procedure. First check whether you can sign in to Roblox elsewhere. For account-level problems, use Roblox Support; that is a general escalation path, not a Sober-specific fix. Do not assume that changing DNS, disabling a VPN, clearing browser cookies, or resetting Sober data is an official solution to a Sober sign-in problem.
If a game reports Error 318 or cannot verify game integrity
VinegarHQ identifies Error 318 with Android Remote Attestation (ARA) being enabled for an experience. Sober cannot satisfy that real-device integrity check, and its maintainers say Sober cannot fix or bypass it. Contact the experience developer through official channels rather than repeatedly reinstalling Sober. The troubleshooting page’s list of affected games was qualified as of August 20, 2026; those games could change their ARA settings, so do not treat that list as current (VinegarHQ’s Error 318 guidance).

Fix Roblox website or private-server links that do nothing
A link that fails to open Sober is different from a rejected password. Check that your Linux desktop’s OpenURI portal is installed and working and that the roblox-player URL scheme is associated with Sober. VinegarHQ’s troubleshooting steps vary by desktop session; they include installing xdg-desktop-portal-gtk, restarting the portal in certain X11 setups, or setting Sober as the URL handler. Follow the steps that match your session in the official link-launch troubleshooting guide.
Prepare a useful report if the problem remains
For an unresolved issue, include the exact Sober version, Roblox client state or version if visible in logs, Linux distribution and kernel, desktop environment and whether the session is X11 or Wayland, GPU, host driver and Flatpak graphics-extension versions, exact error text, reproduction steps, and a relevant log excerpt. VinegarHQ directs users with undocumented or unresolved issues to its Discord or GitHub issue tracker (support guidance). Remove private account information before posting logs.
