How to Fix RSS Feed Errors in WordPress: 404s, Invalid XML, and More

A symptom-led guide to repairing WordPress RSS feeds: inspect /feed/, flush permalinks, isolate plugins and themes, remove XML-corrupting output, and verify server headers.

Most WordPress RSS failures come from one of four layers: rewrite rules, a plugin or theme changing the feed, PHP output corrupting the XML, or the web server returning the wrong response. Open /feed/ directly first, identify the actual response, then repair only the layer that matches the symptom. Resaving permalinks, isolating extensions, checking debug.log, and verifying the raw HTTP response resolve the majority of cases without editing WordPress core.

What a WordPress RSS error actually means

WordPress generates feeds automatically; you do not normally need to build an RSS file by hand. Its built-in feed system supports RSS 2.0, RDF, Atom, and comments feeds, with template tags and endpoint handling documented by WordPress. A reader, podcast-style importer, news app, or the WordPress RSS block still needs a reachable URL that returns a complete XML document.

The phrase “RSS error” describes several different failures. A browser may show a 404 page, an XML validator may report text before the XML declaration, an editor may show an HTTP error, or an RSS reader may reject a response because the server labels it as HTML. Treating all of these as the same problem leads to unnecessary plugin changes or risky code edits.

Start with the symptom, not a random fix

What you see Most likely layer First action Access usually needed
/feed/ returns 404 WordPress rewrite rules, .htaccess, or the server rewrite module Save the existing structure at Settings > Permalinks Dashboard; possibly FTP or hosting support
XML parser says content appears before the declaration, or “headers already sent” appears PHP warning, notice, blank line, or stray whitespace emitted before the feed Enable debugging and inspect wp-content/debug.log Dashboard plus file or hosting access for code fixes
Feed is empty or contains an error message Plugin, theme, PHP error, or an upstream response replacing the feed Inspect the raw response, then disable plugins one at a time Dashboard
Browser displays an HTML error page instead of XML Rewrite failure, authentication layer, server error, or proxy Check the HTTP status and first lines of the response Browser; host if server configuration is involved
RSS reader says the content type is wrong Web-server response headers or an integration serving HTML Verify that the endpoint returns XML and ask the host to correct delivery if necessary Browser or command-free header inspection; host
WordPress RSS block says “A valid URL was not provided” Malformed, inaccessible, or incorrectly entered feed URL Verify the URL outside the editor and open it directly Dashboard and browser

Do not start by editing WordPress core. The common-error guidance from WordPress lists plugin conflicts, theme compatibility, an incompatible PHP version, memory limits, and corrupted files among possible causes. Those are investigation branches, not reasons to overwrite files before you know what response the endpoint produces.

1. Confirm the canonical endpoint and inspect the raw response

Use a private browser window or a browser that is not logged in, and open the site’s canonical feed URL, usually https://example.com/feed/. Replace the example domain with your own site; keep the trailing slash if your site normally uses one. Test the public site rather than a dashboard preview so caching, authentication, and redirects are visible.

  1. Open /feed/ directly.
  2. Record whether the response is a 200, a 404, another error status, or a redirect loop.
  3. Look at the first lines of the body. Valid output should be XML, not a theme page, login form, PHP warning, security challenge, or hosting error page.
  4. Check whether the document is empty, truncated, or malformed after the XML begins.
  5. Repeat the test while logged out and, if possible, from a second network. A response that works only for administrators can indicate authentication or caching rules rather than a feed-generation problem.

Save the exact URL, status, response headers, first lines of the body, and the time of the test. These details distinguish a WordPress problem from a web-server delivery problem and will be useful if you need to contact your host.

Recognize the four raw-response patterns

  • 404 or an HTML “not found” page: continue to the rewrite section.
  • XML preceded by a warning, notice, or blank output: continue to the output-contamination section.
  • Valid-looking XML that stops partway through: investigate a PHP fatal error, memory limit, or extension conflict and inspect the log.
  • XML that looks correct in a browser but is rejected by a consumer: verify the response headers, URL supplied to the consumer, and whether the consumer can reach the site without authentication.

2. Fix a 404 by rebuilding rewrite rules

A feed 404 is frequently a rewrite problem rather than a missing feed. WordPress recommends flushing its rewrite rules by saving the current permalink structure again.

  1. Sign in to WordPress as an administrator.
  2. Open Settings > Permalinks.
  3. Do not change the structure unless you have a separate reason to do so. Scroll to the bottom and click Save Changes using the existing selection.
  4. Open the public /feed/ URL again in a logged-out browser.
  5. If it now returns XML, test it in the RSS reader or integration that originally failed.

Saving permalinks causes WordPress to regenerate its rewrite rules. It is reversible and should be the first repair because it does not modify posts, themes, or plugins.

When Apache, .htaccess, or mod_rewrite is involved

On Apache hosting, the rewrite rules are commonly stored in the site’s .htaccess file. A corrupted or unwritable file can leave ordinary pages working while feed URLs return 404. Check that the file contains the WordPress rewrite rules and that Apache’s mod_rewrite module is enabled.

If you have FTP or file-manager access and suspect a damaged .htaccess, WordPress’s common-error procedure is to rename the existing file rather than delete it, then return to Settings > Permalinks and save the structure to generate a fresh file. Renaming preserves a rollback copy. If WordPress cannot write the replacement, or the server still returns 404, stop changing files and ask the host to verify rewrite-module and virtual-host settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not apply Apache instructions to a site running a different web server without checking the hosting environment. A host controls server-level rewrite behavior, and a dashboard-only fix cannot correct a missing module or an incorrectly configured virtual host.

3. Isolate plugin and theme conflicts

Plugins and themes can add feed items, alter headers, print diagnostics, or replace the response entirely. The reliable test is elimination of variables, not disabling several extensions at once.

  1. Record the current active plugins and theme so you can restore the exact setup.
  2. Deactivate one active plugin.
  3. Open the public feed in a logged-out browser and compare the status, headers, and XML body with your recorded response.
  4. If nothing changes, reactivate that plugin and test the next one.
  5. If the feed begins working, leave the suspected plugin inactive and reactivate other plugins individually. The first reactivation that reproduces the failure identifies the conflict to update, reconfigure, replace, or report.
  6. If no plugin changes the result, switch temporarily to a current default WordPress theme and test again.
  7. Restore the original theme after the test if it is not responsible. If the default theme fixes the feed, inspect the original theme’s feed hooks and recently edited PHP files with its developer.

Perform the test on a staging copy when your site has substantial traffic or a complex checkout. If you must test production, make one reversible change at a time and keep a maintenance window in mind; deactivating a plugin can affect forms, security, caching, or other site functions even if the feed test itself is harmless.

4. Remove output that corrupts XML

An RSS document must begin with XML, not with a PHP warning, notice, blank line, debugging message, or accidental character. A single byte before the XML declaration can trigger parser errors or a “headers already sent” warning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check theme and plugin files edited shortly before the feed broke. Common contamination points include whitespace before an opening PHP tag, whitespace after a closing PHP tag, temporary echo statements, debugging output, and warnings generated by deprecated or incompatible code. Do not edit a production file blindly: preserve a backup and make the smallest change that removes the unwanted output.

Use WordPress debugging to find the source

  1. Enable WP_DEBUG according to WordPress’s documented critical-error workflow.
  2. Load the feed once to reproduce the failure.
  3. Open wp-content/debug.log and look for entries written at that time.
  4. Match the file path, line number, warning, notice, or fatal error to the plugin or theme named in the log.
  5. Apply the appropriate update or code correction, then load the feed again and confirm that the raw response starts cleanly with XML.
  6. Turn off public display of debugging messages when testing is complete. A warning shown to visitors is itself feed-corrupting output and an information-disclosure risk.

If the log is empty, confirm that debugging is enabled correctly and that the server account can write to the log location. A host may need to provide PHP or web-server logs when the failure occurs before WordPress can initialize.

5. Check the URL, XML, and content type

An RSS consumer needs a real, reachable feed URL. The WordPress RSS block can report “RSS Error: WP HTTP Error: A valid URL was not provided” when the field contains a typo, an incomplete address, or a URL that WordPress cannot fetch. Copy the public feed URL from the browser and test it outside the editor before pasting it back into the block or integration.

  • Use the complete scheme and hostname, such as https://example.com/feed/.
  • Make sure the address does not point to a local development hostname, a private staging site, or a login-protected page.
  • Remove accidental spaces and punctuation copied after the URL.
  • Open the exact address while logged out and confirm that it returns the same XML the consumer will receive.

A feed endpoint should return XML rather than an HTML page. Even valid XML can be rejected when the web server sends an incorrect content type. If the raw body is XML but the response is labeled as HTML, or if a proxy changes the headers, provide the host with the URL, status, response headers, and first lines of the body and ask for the feed to be served as XML.

Update WordPress core, plugins, and themes before escalating a content-type issue when updates are available. WordPress support guidance identifies two broad causes for this class of failure: a conflict inside the WordPress installation or a server that is not configured to serve RSS feeds correctly. Updating and isolating the installation addresses the first; host-side header and server checks address the second.

6. Separate WordPress generation from the consumer

If the feed opens as valid XML in a logged-out browser and an independent XML check shows no truncation or parser error, the remaining fault may be in the consuming application. Re-enter the exact public URL, check whether that service follows redirects, and confirm that it is not receiving a cached authentication page.

Do not “fix” a consumer error by adding HTML around the feed or by copying the XML into a post. The consumer needs the endpoint itself to remain machine-readable. Test the endpoint after every change so you know whether the correction affected WordPress output or only the application’s configuration.

7. Escalate with evidence instead of a vague support ticket

Contact the host or a developer when permalink flushing, extension isolation, and log inspection do not resolve the failure, or when the response is clearly controlled by the server. Send a compact evidence package:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The exact public feed URL.
  • The HTTP status and any redirect sequence.
  • The response headers, especially the declared content type.
  • The first lines of the raw response and, if relevant, the point where the XML becomes invalid or stops.
  • The date and time, including the site’s time zone, when the problem began and when you reproduced it.
  • The results of saving permalinks.
  • The plugin-by-plugin and default-theme isolation results.
  • Relevant entries from wp-content/debug.log, with passwords, tokens, and personal data removed.

This information lets support classify the issue as a rewrite failure, server delivery problem, code-generated output, or third-party integration fault. It also prevents repeated requests to disable unrelated plugins or make irreversible file changes.

Choose the least risky fix for the layer that failed

Layer Typical evidence Least-risk first move When to escalate
WordPress settings Feed 404 immediately after a permalink or migration change Save the existing structure at Settings > Permalinks 404 remains after rules are regenerated
Plugin or theme Feed changes when one extension is disabled, or default theme works Deactivate one item at a time and document the reproducing change Conflict needs a vendor patch or custom-code review
PHP or generated output Warning, notice, whitespace, or fatal error appears before or inside XML Inspect wp-content/debug.log and correct the named file Logs are unavailable or the error occurs before WordPress loads
Web server Wrong status, HTML response, missing rewrite behavior, or wrong content type Provide raw-response evidence to the host Server module, virtual host, proxy, or header configuration must change
Consumer Browser receives valid XML but one reader rejects it Re-enter and test the public URL in that application Consumer cannot follow the site’s redirects or requires a supported XML variant

Prevent the next feed outage

  • After changing permalink settings, migrating hosts, or switching themes, open /feed/ while logged out.
  • Update core, plugins, and themes through a staging test when possible, then verify the feed before and after the production change.
  • Keep a record of the active plugin and theme set so an elimination test can be run quickly.
  • Do not leave temporary echo statements, PHP notices, or visible debugging enabled on a public site.
  • Monitor the feed URL as an XML endpoint, checking both its status and content type rather than only whether the homepage loads.
  • Preserve a known-good copy of .htaccess before making server or rewrite changes, and ask the host to confirm the correct rewrite module for the server software.

A concise recovery sequence

When you need the shortest safe path, work in this order: open the canonical /feed/ URL and record the raw response; save the current permalink structure; test again logged out; disable plugins one at a time; switch temporarily to a default theme if necessary; enable debugging and inspect wp-content/debug.log; then verify that the final response is reachable XML with the correct content type. If the response is still an HTML page, the status is still wrong, or the server headers are incorrect, give the host the evidence package rather than repeatedly changing WordPress files.
