A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Rufus error 0x80070032 is usually a Windows-to-USB formatting incompatibility, not a standalone Rufus defect. Start by testing the same USB with Windows’ own Format command and the same filesystem selected in Rufus. If Windows cannot format it either, change the connection or drive; if Windows succeeds but Rufus fails, check the ISO, permissions, selected device, Rufus version and log. The code can also appear during Windows Update or an Insider-build installation, where the remedy is different.
What 0x80070032 means in Rufus
The hexadecimal code is conventionally written 0x80070032, with a zero after the “x.” A title or screenshot that says “ox80070032” is normally referring to the same code. The number alone does not identify one universal fault. Windows uses it in more than one context, and the surrounding Rufus message matters.

When Rufus is formatting or writing a USB, the most useful explanation comes from Rufus’ official FAQ: formatting failures usually indicate an incompatibility between Windows and the device. Rufus relies on Windows’ native formatting services, so a drive that Windows itself cannot format will generally fail in Rufus too. That is why the first diagnostic is a Windows-format test, not repeated attempts in Rufus.

First identify where the code appears
Do not apply a USB-format fix until you know which operation produced the message. Use the wording and timing of the error to classify it:
| Where you see 0x80070032 | Likely area to investigate first |
|---|---|
| Rufus is formatting or writing a selected USB | Windows/device compatibility, USB connection, filesystem, ISO and Rufus log |
| Rufus is mounting or handling an ISO before writing | ISO integrity, file access, permissions and the Rufus version |
| Windows Update reports the code | Free storage, third-party drivers, Windows Update services and the update cache |
| An Insider Preview installation reports it | The particular build and installation media; follow the case-specific repair-install path |
If you are unsure, note the exact step at which the message appears, the text immediately before and after the code, and whether the USB has already been erased. This prevents applying an update-cache procedure to a failing flash drive or replacing a drive when the ISO is the real problem.
Protect the USB before testing
- Copy every needed file from the target USB to another disk. Creating bootable media normally overwrites the selected device.
- Disconnect other removable drives so the intended device is easier to identify.
- Check the capacity and label shown by Rufus against the physical drive. Selecting the wrong disk can destroy its contents.
- If the USB is the only copy of important data, stop and make a separate backup before formatting or using any destructive command.
Run the decisive native-format test
Rufus specifically recommends comparing its result with Windows’ native formatter, using the same filesystem. This separates a Windows/device problem from a Rufus-only failure.

- Open File Explorer, select This PC, right-click the intended USB volume and choose Format.
- Choose the same filesystem Rufus was set to use, such as FAT32 or NTFS. Do not change the filesystem merely to make the test pass; the eventual choice must suit the ISO and the computer’s firmware.
- Leave the allocation-size setting at its Windows default unless you have a documented reason to change it, confirm that the correct drive is selected, and start the format.
- Record whether Windows completes, the exact Windows error if it does not, and whether the resulting volume can be opened and files copied to it.
| Native Windows result | What it tells you | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Formatting fails on the same USB and filesystem | The problem is probably Windows/device compatibility rather than a Rufus-only defect. | Try the connection and replacement-drive checks below. |
| Formatting succeeds, but Rufus fails | Windows can use the device; the failure is specific to the Rufus operation, ISO, permissions or version. | Recreate media carefully and inspect the Rufus log. |
| Formatting succeeds only with a different filesystem | The original filesystem choice may not fit the device, ISO or firmware requirements. | Confirm the ISO’s boot requirements before selecting FAT32 or NTFS in Rufus. |
If Windows cannot format the USB
Change the physical connection
- Remove the USB from its current port and connect it directly to another port on the computer.
- Remove USB hubs, front-panel extensions and adapters while testing. A direct connection eliminates another layer between Windows and the drive.
- Restart Windows, reconnect the drive and repeat the native-format test with the same filesystem.
A different port that works does not prove Rufus was at fault; it shows that the earlier connection path was not reliable enough for the operation.

Test a known-good replacement drive
Use a USB flash drive known to format normally, with enough capacity for the ISO and a connector that fits the computer. Test it in Windows before opening Rufus. If the replacement formats successfully while the original does not, the original drive or its compatibility with Windows is the leading suspect. Keep the original aside rather than repeatedly erasing it if it contains recoverable data.
Check the filesystem requirement before changing settings
FAT32 and NTFS are not interchangeable in every boot scenario. Select the filesystem required by the ISO and the target computer’s firmware, rather than assuming one is universally better. A native-format success with the wrong filesystem does not validate the final boot media.
If Windows formats successfully but Rufus fails
Reconfirm the device and destructive-operation warning
In Rufus, verify the device name and capacity in the Device field, then confirm that it is the USB you just tested. Rufus will overwrite the selected device when it creates the media. Remove other removable disks if the list is confusing.
Use an official, matching ISO
Download the ISO from the operating-system vendor’s official source. Make sure it matches the computer’s architecture and the installation you intend to perform. An image for a different architecture or an incomplete download can fail during mounting or writing even when the USB itself is healthy.

Match Rufus settings to the target computer
Choose the partition and filesystem options that fit the target machine’s firmware and the ISO’s documented requirements. Do not switch between FAT32 and NTFS at random: each change should answer a compatibility requirement. If the ISO is larger than the practical limits of the selected filesystem, follow the ISO’s supported method rather than forcing an arbitrary setting.
Run the operation with appropriate access
Close programs that may hold the ISO or USB, including Explorer windows showing the drive. Start Rufus with the normal Windows account first; if the log indicates an access-denied condition, right-click Rufus and choose Run as administrator, then repeat the operation. Administrative access cannot repair a physically failing drive, so do not treat it as a guaranteed fix.
Capture the Rufus log instead of guessing
Save or copy the complete Rufus log when the failure occurs. The line immediately before 0x80070032 may identify whether the failure happened while partitioning, formatting, mounting the ISO or copying files. Include the Rufus version, Windows build, USB capacity, selected filesystem, ISO name and the exact error when asking for support. A short hexadecimal code without that context is not enough to distinguish the causes.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Recreate the bootable media carefully
- Back up the USB and disconnect unrelated removable drives.
- Connect the intended drive directly and confirm it appears with the expected capacity.
- Open Rufus and select that device explicitly.
- Select the official ISO and verify its architecture.
- Choose FAT32 or NTFS according to the ISO and the target computer’s firmware requirements.
- Read Rufus’ warning that the device will be erased, then proceed only after checking the device one more time.
- Stay connected until Rufus reports completion. Do not remove the drive during partitioning, formatting or copying.
- Safely eject the completed media and test it on the intended computer.
If the second attempt fails, stop repeating the same settings. Compare the saved log with a test using the known-good replacement drive. That comparison tells you whether to pursue the original hardware or the image and Windows environment.

When 0x80070032 comes from Windows Update
If the message appears in Settings > Windows Update rather than during Rufus, use the update-specific checks. Microsoft advises updating third-party drivers, freeing storage, rerunning Windows Update and resetting its cache when necessary.
Meet the documented storage minimum
Microsoft states: Your device requires at least 16 GB of free space to upgrade a 32-bit OS, or 20 GB for a 64-bit OS.
These are minimum free-space requirements for the stated upgrade scenarios, not a promise that every update will install as soon as the number is met. Remove or move files safely, empty temporary storage through Windows settings, and verify the available space before retrying.
Update third-party drivers
Install current drivers from the hardware maker or Windows’ supported update channels, especially after adding storage, graphics, network or chipset hardware. Restart Windows after driver changes and run Windows Update again.

Reset the Windows Update cache
Use an administrator Command Prompt. The following sequence stops the services that lock the cache, renames the existing folders so Windows can create fresh ones, starts the services again and then restarts the PC:

If a rename reports that a folder is in use, close update-related windows, restart Windows and repeat the procedure from an administrator Command Prompt. The renamed folders contain cached update data; Windows rebuilds them after the services restart.
When the code appears during an Insider installation
A Microsoft Q&A report dated July 28, 2024 concerned Windows 11 Insider Preview build 10.0.26120.1330. Moderator guidance in that case was: Suggest you go to the Insider Download page and dl the ISO for 26100.1150 and do a repair install.
The same response advised backing up important files first.
This is case-specific guidance, not a universal Rufus fix. Confirm the exact Insider build and installation stage before using a different ISO or performing a repair install. Back up important files, obtain media intended for the affected installation, and do not assume that the build numbers in that report apply to your computer.
Decision guide: replace hardware, change media or repair Windows?
| Evidence from your tests | Most sensible next move |
|---|---|
| Windows cannot format the original USB; another port and direct connection do not help | Test a known-good replacement drive and treat the original as a device-compatibility or hardware problem. |
| Replacement USB formats, original USB does not | Use the replacement for boot media and preserve data from the original if possible. |
| Both USBs format in Windows, but Rufus fails with one ISO | Recheck the ISO source, architecture, filesystem and Rufus log. |
| Rufus fails with multiple healthy USBs and verified ISOs | Collect the full log, confirm the Rufus version and investigate Windows permissions or system components. |
| The code appears only in Windows Update | Follow the storage, driver, service and cache steps instead of repeatedly recreating USB media. |
| The code appears during an Insider-build installation | Identify the exact build and consider the documented repair-install guidance only after a backup. |
Information to record before asking for help
- Exact error text and the operation that produced it.
- Rufus version, Windows edition and full build number.
- USB manufacturer, capacity, connection type and whether another port worked.
- Filesystem selected in Rufus and in the native Windows-format test.
- ISO filename, source, architecture and whether a different official ISO worked.
- Whether Windows’ Format command succeeded, including its complete error message.
- The relevant Rufus log lines, with personal paths or keys removed.
Those details turn 0x80070032 from an ambiguous code into a reproducible failure path and prevent destructive trial and error.
