If “Exp 11” means Internet Explorer 11, the quickest fix for the recurring An error has occurred in the script on this page popup is to refresh once, then open Tools (or the gear icon) > Internet Options > Advanced. Select Disable script debugging (Internet Explorer) and Disable script debugging (Other), clear Display a notification about every script error, select Apply, and reopen the page. Those settings hide the dialog; they do not repair faulty JavaScript or VBScript on the website. The sections below explain how to identify the cause, preserve useful debugging information, handle legacy scripting safely, and move compatible sites to Edge Internet Explorer mode.
What “Exp 11” means and what the warning is telling you
“Exp 11” is commonly a shortened or mistyped reference to Internet Explorer 11 (IE11). The warning usually appears as a dialog such as An error has occurred in the script on this page, often followed by a line number, character number, error description, and a question asking whether to continue running scripts.

Microsoft’s support guidance explains that Internet Explorer displays these messages when JavaScript or VBScript on the website has a problem. In other words, the browser is reporting a failure in code it received from a page; the message does not by itself prove that IE11 is damaged, that Windows is infected, or that your computer has a hardware fault. A page can contain code written for a newer browser, depend on a legacy engine that is disabled in its security zone, or simply contain a coding mistake.
The distinction matters. A visitor normally wants the dialog out of the way, while a site owner or developer needs the error details to repair the page. Hiding the notification is appropriate for nuisance dialogs during ordinary browsing, but it is not a root-cause fix.

First response for ordinary browsing
- Refresh once. Use the Refresh button or press F5. Microsoft recommends this because an incomplete page download can leave a script without a file or object it expects.
- Decide whether the page is usable. If the site works after the refresh, continue, but note that the underlying script may still be unreliable. If the dialog returns, select No when IE asks whether to continue running scripts, or dismiss the warning and see whether the page’s main content remains usable.
- Compare two pages. Open a simple, known-good page and then the URL that produces the warning. If only one site fails, its script or browser-compatibility assumptions are the leading suspect. If every page fails, continue with the browser and policy checks below.
Do not keep refreshing indefinitely. Repeated reloads cannot correct a defective script and can make it harder to tell whether the problem is limited to one URL.
Stop the recurring script-error dialog
These settings change what IE11 reports to you; they do not change the website’s code.
- Open Internet Explorer 11.
- Select Tools on the menu bar, or select the gear icon in the upper-right corner, then choose Internet Options.
- Open the Advanced tab.
- Scroll to the Browsing section.
- Check Disable script debugging (Internet Explorer).
- Check Disable script debugging (Other).
- Clear Display a notification about every script error.
- Select Apply, then OK. Close all IE11 windows and open the browser again before retesting.
Both script-debugging boxes matter because IE11 can encounter code in the page itself and code associated with other browsing components. Clearing only the notification box may stop the message in some cases, while leaving debugging enabled can still produce interruptions in particular configurations. Selecting both boxes and clearing the notification is the standard end-user combination described by Microsoft.
If the checkboxes are unavailable, immediately revert after you close Internet Options, or are controlled by an administrator message, a Windows policy may be enforcing the setting. Do not work around an enterprise policy by changing registry values on your own; ask the administrator who manages the device and the affected application.
Use the symptom pattern to narrow the cause
| What you observe | Most likely scope | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| One page or one web application reports the error; other sites are normal | Script on that site, or assumptions about a different browser or compatibility mode | Refresh once, suppress the dialog if you only need to browse, and report the exact URL and message to the site owner or application team |
| Several unrelated pages in the same security zone report errors | Zone policy, a disabled legacy scripting engine, an add-on, or a managed Windows setting | Check the Advanced settings, review the zone and add-ons, and ask an administrator whether policy changed |
| Every page reports a script error, including a simple known-good page | Browser configuration, security-zone configuration, add-on interference, or Windows policy | Test with add-ons disabled, compare zone settings, and record the Windows edition and build before escalating |
| The warning appears only after moving a legacy site to another browser | Compatibility assumptions or unavailable IE-specific behavior | Use a supported Internet Explorer mode path where your Windows edition and organization’s policy allow it |
Check add-ons and security zones when all pages are affected
Test without add-ons
IE11 add-ons can inject code, alter page behavior, or interfere with scripts. From the Tools or gear menu, choose Manage add-ons. Review enabled toolbars and extensions, disable a nonessential item, restart IE11, and retest the same known-good and failing pages. If the warning disappears, re-enable items one at a time until the conflicting add-on is identified. Leave business-critical extensions enabled only when you have confirmed they are required and supported.
If you cannot change add-ons because the controls are locked, treat that as a management boundary rather than a browser fault. Record the item name and ask the device administrator to test the configuration.
Identify the security zone
IE11 applies different scripting policies to the Internet, Local intranet, Trusted sites, and Restricted sites zones. A page that works in one zone can fail in another when a legacy engine is blocked or a policy differs. Select Tools/gear > Internet Options > Security, select the zone that contains the URL, and note the zone name before changing anything.
Avoid lowering the zone’s overall security level just to remove a dialog. Broadly relaxing protections can expose every site in that zone, while the original problem may be a single incompatible script. A narrowly scoped, administrator-managed exception is safer when a business application genuinely requires a legacy engine.
Understand VBScript and JScript policy changes
VBScript defaults changed after 2019 updates
Microsoft announced that VBScript would be disabled by default for Internet Explorer 11 and WebOCs in the Internet and Untrusted zones on platforms running IE11 after the 2019 cumulative updates. A page written on the assumption that VBScript is always available can therefore produce an error even though the browser installation is healthy.
Do not re-enable VBScript globally merely to silence a warning. First confirm that the line-of-business application actually requires it, identify the exact zone and URLs, and involve the administrator responsible for the application and Windows policy. A narrowly scoped exception should be documented and limited to the required sites.
JScript is also a legacy security decision
Microsoft’s 2020 guidance recommends disabling legacy JScript execution for websites in the Internet and Restricted Sites zones as a security best practice. This recommendation reflects the risk of running old scripting engines on untrusted pages. If a legacy application fails after that policy is applied, the correct response is to verify the application’s dependency and seek an approved, limited exception or a modernized version—not to enable legacy scripting for every website.
Why an exception can make the message disappear but still be a bad fix
Enabling a blocked engine may make a particular page run, but it also expands the code that untrusted pages can execute. The visible symptom may be gone while the security exposure is larger. Keep the default protections for ordinary browsing, and use a controlled zone, managed device policy, or isolated compatibility workflow when an older application cannot yet be replaced.

When the IE11 desktop application is retired
Microsoft has permanently disabled the retired IE11 desktop application through an Edge update on certain Windows 10 versions. Availability and management options depend on the Windows edition, servicing state, and organizational policy, so an older shortcut may no longer launch the standalone browser.
For a compatible legacy site, Microsoft’s supported migration path is Internet Explorer mode in Microsoft Edge. On a personally managed installation, open Edge’s Settings, go to Default browser, and look for the option that allows sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer mode. If the option is available, enable it and restart Edge. You can then use the tab’s menu to choose Reload in Internet Explorer mode for the affected site. On managed PCs, an administrator may need to publish the site list and enable the relevant policy; the control may be absent for editions or configurations that do not support it.
IE mode is not a guarantee that every old page will work. It supplies IE-compatible document and scripting behavior within Edge, but the site can still contain broken code, depend on an unavailable plug-in, or be blocked by current security policy. Test the application’s critical functions—sign-in, navigation, file upload, printing, and the transaction that matters—rather than assuming that a page loading proves compatibility.

If you maintain the page, leave script debugging available and investigate the failing code. The line and character values in the dialog are clues, not proof that the defect is exactly at that character; the real problem can be a missing file, an earlier syntax error, an unexpected object, or an assumption about a browser API.
- Record the complete URL, the exact error text, line and character values, the time of failure, and whether the problem occurs after a clean refresh.
- Record the Windows edition and build, IE11 document mode or compatibility setting, the security zone, and whether the same URL fails in Edge IE mode.
- Open IE developer tools with F12 and inspect the Console and debugger views. Look for the first error in the sequence, failed network requests, and scripts that are loaded conditionally by zone or user agent.
- Reproduce the issue with nonessential add-ons disabled so that an extension is not mistaken for a page defect.
- Compare the failing page with a known-good page and with a current browser. A difference in JavaScript language features or DOM behavior often explains why a page designed for a newer browser fails in IE11.
- Fix and retest the page code, then test the same workflow in every supported zone and compatibility path.
For applications that host web content, Microsoft documents the IEDisableScriptDebugging API as the programmatic equivalent of the Internet Options setting. It prevents the webpage error dialog, including debugging information, from displaying for the current process. That API is useful when an application deliberately handles errors itself; it should not be used to conceal a defect during development.
Escalate with evidence
Whether you are an end user contacting an application owner or an administrator opening a support case, provide a compact reproduction record:
- The exact URL, including the page or transaction that fails.
- The complete dialog text and the line and character values.
- Whether refreshing once changes the result.
- Whether a known-good page works in the same browser session.
- The Windows edition and build, IE11 availability status, and whether the test was in standalone IE11 or Edge IE mode.
- The security zone and any recent change to VBScript or JScript policy.
- The enabled add-ons and whether the issue remains with nonessential add-ons disabled.
- The steps that reliably reproduce the error and the business action that cannot be completed.
This information separates a site defect from a local configuration problem and prevents a support team from recommending a risky, global scripting exception without knowing what the application actually needs.

Common wrong turns
Reinstalling Windows or Internet Explorer first
A script-error dialog commonly reflects page code or a zone policy, so reinstalling the browser is an unnecessarily disruptive first step. Establish whether one URL or every URL is affected, then test the Advanced settings and add-ons.
Enabling every legacy script engine
Global exceptions weaken the protections that Microsoft introduced for Internet and Restricted or Untrusted zones. If an old internal application cannot run without VBScript or legacy JScript, use an administrator-managed, narrowly scoped exception while the application is modernized.
Assuming that a hidden dialog means the page is fixed
Disabling debugging and clearing the notification changes visibility only. The page can still omit buttons, fail to save data, or break later in the workflow. Verify the actual task you need to complete.
Ignoring the retirement status of standalone IE11
On Windows versions where the desktop application has been disabled, repeatedly trying old shortcuts will not restore it. Check whether Edge IE mode is available for your edition and policy, and involve the administrator if the option is missing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA practical decision checklist
- Confirm that “Exp 11” refers to Internet Explorer 11 and capture the exact warning.
- Refresh once and test a known-good page.
- If only one site fails, treat the site’s script or compatibility assumptions as the primary lead and report the evidence.
- If many sites fail, disable script debugging in both Advanced checkboxes, clear the notification, restart IE, and retest.
- Review add-ons and identify the page’s security zone without lowering broad security settings.
- Check whether VBScript or legacy JScript policy changed and request an administrator-managed exception only when a verified business dependency requires it.
- If standalone IE11 is unavailable, test the site in Edge Internet Explorer mode when supported.
- If you develop the page, keep debugging enabled, inspect it with F12 tools, and fix the underlying code rather than suppressing the warning.
As an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can check and repair some common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, review settings and potentially unwanted applications, and provide an app-crash log. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary and no tool repairs every crash or defective website script. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, with a free trial by category of at least two days before a paid subscription.
Bottom line
For a nuisance IE11 script warning, refresh once, then disable both script-debugging options and clear the script-error notification in Internet Options > Advanced. If the error is limited to one URL, the website’s JavaScript, VBScript, or compatibility assumptions are more likely than a damaged browser. If every page fails, investigate add-ons, security zones, and Windows policy. Keep legacy scripting exceptions narrow, and use Edge Internet Explorer mode where Microsoft still supports the site and your Windows configuration permits it. Developers should retain the diagnostics and repair the page code instead of merely hiding the dialog.
