How to Fix “Server Cannot Be Found” on Safari (iPhone, iPad, and Mac)

By VGSources Team 9 min read

Safari’s “server cannot be found” message means the browser could not reach the website address you entered. The failure can be on the site itself, your Wi‑Fi or cellular connection, a router, a firewall or proxy, DNS name resolution, a VPN or iCloud Private Relay, or Safari’s own settings. Start with isolation rather than advanced changes: open another website, try another browser or app, and test a different network. Those three checks show whether the problem is broad, Safari-specific, or limited to one site or connection.

On iPhone or iPad, Apple recommends trying the same address over cellular data or another Wi‑Fi network. On a Mac, verify internet access in another app and make sure the router and other network equipment are powered. Once you know the scope, follow the matching section below.

First, identify how wide the failure is

Do not change DNS or delete all browsing data before you know the pattern. The pattern determines which fix is sensible and prevents you from troubleshooting the wrong device or network.

Keep the result of each test. For example, “the site opens on cellular but not home Wi‑Fi” is a useful diagnosis; “Safari is broken” is not specific enough to guide the next step.

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

When every site fails

1. Confirm that the internet connection works outside Safari

  1. Open another app that uses the internet, such as Mail or another service you normally use. If that app also cannot connect, the problem is not limited to Safari.
  2. On an iPhone or iPad, turn off Wi‑Fi temporarily and try the address over cellular data. You can also join a different Wi‑Fi network. If the page loads there, focus on the original Wi‑Fi connection or its router.
  3. On a Mac, check another internet-connected app and verify that the router and any modem or other network equipment are powered. A dark or disconnected network device can prevent every browser from finding a server.

2. Restart the affected connection and device

Disconnect from the current Wi‑Fi network, reconnect, and restart the iPhone, iPad, or Mac. If the issue is limited to one home or office network, power-cycle the router according to its normal procedure, then wait for it to finish reconnecting before testing Safari again. Do not assume that a successful Wi‑Fi icon means the internet path is working; the alternate-network test is the decisive check.

3. Check for a managed network restriction

Corporate, school, hotel, and public networks can apply firewall or proxy rules that block particular destinations or DNS requests. On a managed Mac network, ask the administrator whether a firewall or proxy policy is preventing Safari from reaching the address. If the same site works on cellular data or another Wi‑Fi network, give the administrator that comparison and the exact address that fails.

When only one website fails

Verify the address and reload

Read the entire address in Safari’s address bar. A misspelled domain, an extra character, or an outdated bookmark can send Safari to a server that does not exist. Enter the address again manually, reload the page, then quit and reopen Safari before testing once more.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Determine whether the website is unavailable

Try the same address in another browser or on another device using the same network. If it fails everywhere, the server may be busy or temporarily unavailable. Wait and retry rather than repeatedly changing settings on your device. If the site works elsewhere but not in Safari, continue with the Safari, VPN, Private Relay, and compatibility checks below.

Temporarily check VPN and Private Relay

A VPN can change the route or DNS service used for a site. Disconnect it briefly, then reload the page. If the site begins working, the VPN configuration or endpoint is involved; reconnect it afterward if you need it and contact its administrator or support for a compatible configuration.

For a single-site problem on iPhone or iPad, Apple also advises checking whether iCloud Private Relay is turned on. Temporarily checking the site with Private Relay disabled can distinguish a relay path problem from a general Safari failure. Restore your preferred privacy setting after the test.

Consider Safari compatibility

A website owner may have a server problem or a site that does not work correctly with your Safari version. If the address is available in another browser but not Safari after the checks above, contact the website owner and report the Safari version, device, operating-system version, exact address, and error wording.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When only Safari fails

Disable extensions and content blockers for a test

Extensions and content blockers can alter requests or prevent scripts and redirects that a site needs. Temporarily turn them off in Safari’s extension controls, reload the failing page, and test again. If the page works, re-enable extensions one at a time until the conflicting item is identified. Leave only the extensions you need enabled on sites that depend on blocked content.

Clear Safari website data on iPhone or iPad

Stored cookies, caches, and other website data can become inconsistent with a site’s current configuration. Apple’s documented path is:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps, then Safari.
  3. Tap Clear History and Website Data.
  4. Confirm the action, then reopen Safari and test the address.

This removes Safari history and website data, so pages may ask you to sign in again. Use it after the scope tests, not as the first response to a network-wide outage.

Confirm JavaScript on iPhone or iPad

Some pages cannot complete navigation when JavaScript is disabled. Check it at Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced > JavaScript, and turn JavaScript on for the test. Reload the page after changing the setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a current Safari version on Mac

Safari is updated with the operating system. Install available macOS updates so Safari is current, then reopen the browser and retry. A site owner may not support an older Safari build, so include the Safari and macOS versions when asking for help.

Inspect Mac firewall and proxy settings

A firewall or proxy can block only Safari or only particular destinations. Review the Mac’s active firewall and proxy configuration, especially on a work or school connection. If you do not administer the network, ask its administrator before changing a policy. Record any setting you change so it can be restored.

When the site works on another network

Separate Wi‑Fi from the wider internet

Switching from the failing Wi‑Fi to cellular data or a different Wi‑Fi network is the cleanest comparison. If Safari reaches the site on the alternate network, the website and browser are less likely to be the cause. Concentrate on the original router, DNS service, firewall, proxy, or VPN.

Check the router and local equipment

Confirm that the router and any modem or other network equipment are powered and show their normal connection status. Reconnect the device to Wi‑Fi after the equipment has completed its restart. If every device on that network has the same problem, report it to the internet provider or network administrator rather than changing Safari settings on each device.

Review firewall, proxy, and VPN rules

On a managed network, policies may intentionally restrict certain domains. A VPN can also route only some destinations through a path that cannot resolve or reach them. Test with the VPN disconnected and, where permitted, with the proxy disabled temporarily. Restore the original configuration after testing.

Advanced check: DNS name resolution

Safari must translate a domain name into an address before it can contact the server. When name resolution is the failing layer, another network may work while the original one does not. DNS changes affect every app on that connection, so treat them as an escalation step rather than a routine fix.

  1. Write down the current DNS entries and the network’s original setting before editing anything.
  2. Open the active network connection’s DNS configuration and replace the entries only with values approved by your internet provider or network administrator.
  3. Reconnect to the network, reopen Safari, and test the original address plus another website.
  4. If the result is worse or unrelated sites fail, restore the recorded settings and reconnect again.

Do not infer that DNS is responsible merely because one page fails; first complete the alternate-browser and alternate-network tests. If you are on a corporate, school, or managed network, ask the administrator before changing DNS.

Device-specific checklists

iPhone or iPad

  1. Open another website and another internet app to establish whether the connection works.
  2. Try the same address over cellular data or a different Wi‑Fi network.
  3. Check the URL, reload, quit and reopen Safari, and retry later if the site may be busy.
  4. Temporarily check the site with any VPN disconnected; for a single-site issue, check iCloud Private Relay as well.
  5. Clear data at Settings > Apps > Safari > Clear History and Website Data.
  6. Confirm JavaScript at Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced > JavaScript.
  7. Disable extensions or content blockers for a test, then re-enable them individually.
  8. If only one Wi‑Fi network fails, inspect its router, firewall, proxy, or DNS and involve its administrator.

Mac

  1. Verify internet access in another app and confirm the router and other network equipment are powered.
  2. Try another Wi‑Fi network or a different connection to determine whether the failure follows the Mac or the network.
  3. Check the address, reload, quit and reopen Safari, and test the site in another browser or on another device.
  4. Disconnect a VPN temporarily and check whether a single-site failure changes.
  5. Disable Safari extensions and content blockers temporarily.
  6. Install available macOS updates so Safari is current.
  7. Inspect firewall and proxy restrictions, particularly on a managed network.
  8. Use manual DNS configuration only after recording the original entries and only with approved DNS values.
  9. If the server is unavailable or the site is incompatible with Safari, contact the website owner with the exact error and your Safari/macOS versions.

How to read the result of your tests

  • Nothing loads in any app or on any browser: concentrate on the connection, router, service outage, or network policy.
  • Other sites load, but one address fails everywhere: recheck the URL and wait for the website owner to resolve a server outage or compatibility problem.
  • The address works in another browser but not Safari: investigate extensions, content blockers, stored website data, JavaScript, Private Relay, VPN routing, and Safari updates.
  • The address works on cellular or another Wi‑Fi network: investigate the original network’s router, firewall, proxy, VPN, or DNS.

Keep a short record of the working combination: device, Safari version, network, VPN or Private Relay state, and whether other sites load. That information prevents repeated resets and gives a network administrator or website owner a reproducible report.
