Microsoft’s documented 0x80070422 means a required service is disabled, and the reported digits are often a transposed or truncated version of it. Enable and start Windows Update and Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS), then retry the affected Store, Xbox, Minecraft, or Windows Update action.
What “Server failed 0x8007422” actually means
The exact string 0x8007422 does not have a separate entry in the official Microsoft error-code material identified for this problem. It appears in Microsoft-hosted user reports involving Microsoft Store downloads, Minecraft sign-in, Xbox startup, and Windows Update. The better-documented code 0x80070422 is mapped by a Microsoft Q&A answer to ERR_SERVICE_DISABLED.

That makes a typing, display, or transcription error the most likely explanation: the final digits in 0x8007422 may be missing or rearranged from 0x80070422. Treat the message as a service-availability problem first, not as proof that a game server is offline. The same disabled Windows service can prevent several unrelated Microsoft features from downloading, signing in, or starting.

| What you see | Most useful interpretation | First manual check |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Store download or update fails | A Windows download service may be disabled or stopped; a Store cache problem is another possibility. | Check Windows Update and BITS, then run wsreset if the Store still fails. |
| Xbox app will not start or sign in | The app may be unable to reach a required Windows service. | Check the services before changing the Xbox installation. |
| Minecraft sign-in reports the code | The launcher or Store identity path may be affected by the same service condition. | Confirm the services are running, then retry sign-in. |
| Windows Update reports the code | This is the clearest match for the documented 0x80070422 meaning: a service is disabled. |
Open the Services console and enable Windows Update and BITS. |
Before changing anything
- Write down the exact code and the application showing it. A screenshot helps if the digits are hard to read.
- Save open work and close the Store, Xbox app, Minecraft launcher, and Windows Update settings before changing services.
- Use an account with administrator permission. Windows may ask for approval when you change a service.
- Do not assume the wording means a remote game server is down. The documented interpretation points to a local Windows service state.
Fix the likely cause in Services
The Services console is the first-line, built-in repair because it changes only the startup and running state of the affected component. Follow the sequence exactly and test after both services have been checked.

- Open the console. Press Win+R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. Approve the administrator prompt if Windows displays one. - Locate Windows Update. Scroll to Windows Update, or select the list and type the service name to jump to it.
- Open its properties. Double-click Windows Update. In the Startup type control, choose an enabled configuration rather than Disabled. Windows editions can present different enabled choices; use the one available on your system.
- Start the service. Click Start, then Apply and OK. If the status already says Running, leave it running and continue.
- Check BITS. Find Background Intelligent Transfer Service. Open its properties, make sure its startup configuration is enabled, click Start if it is stopped, and select Apply and OK.
- Close Services and retry. Reopen the Microsoft Store, Xbox, or Minecraft sign-in flow, or select Check for updates in Windows Update. Test the component that originally displayed the message rather than testing only the Services console.
Windows Update and BITS serve different parts of the transfer process. Enabling only one can leave the original failure unchanged, so check both even when the first service starts successfully.
Reset the Microsoft Store cache when the Store is the failing component
If the error appears specifically while downloading or updating through Microsoft Store, use the built-in cache reset after checking the services:

wsreset is a Store-focused step. It does not replace enabling Windows Update and BITS, and it is not the right first move when the error is limited to Windows Update or Xbox startup.

After the services are running, retry the same Xbox startup, Xbox sign-in, or Minecraft sign-in operation that produced the message. If it succeeds, the service state was the practical blocker. If it fails with the same code, record whether the failure occurs before sign-in, during a download, or while launching; that distinction helps support identify which Windows component is refusing the request.

Do not immediately remove and reinstall the game or launcher. Reinstallation does not correct a disabled Windows service and can create additional sign-in or download work. First verify the service status again and confirm that the Store itself can open and perform a small, unrelated action.
When Windows shows Error 1058 or refuses to start a service
A common companion message is Error 1058: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. A Microsoft Q&A user report dated December 28, 2020 used that wording. In this context, an inability to start Windows Update or BITS means the service state is being enforced or blocked, not merely that the app needs another retry.

Check for policy restrictions
On a work, school, or managed computer, an administrator policy can set services to Disabled or prevent changes. If the Startup type control is unavailable, immediately reverts, or asks for credentials you do not have, contact the device administrator. Repeatedly forcing the setting can conflict with the organization’s configuration.
Check security and background software
Antivirus products, privacy tools, system-tuning utilities, and other background programs can interfere with service startup. Temporarily changing security settings can reduce protection, so do not disable protection casually. Instead, use the product’s documented pause or exclusion procedure only if you understand the risk, and restore normal protection as soon as the test ends.

Use a clean boot to isolate a conflict
A clean boot starts Windows with nonessential third-party services and startup programs suppressed. It is an isolation test, not a permanent operating mode.
- Open System Configuration by pressing Win+R, entering
msconfig, and pressing Enter. - Use the Services and Startup areas to prevent non-Microsoft background items from loading, following the clean-boot procedure for your Windows edition. Do not disable Microsoft services indiscriminately.
- Restart Windows and test the affected Store, Xbox, Minecraft, or Windows Update action.
- If the error disappears, re-enable items in groups and restart between tests until the conflicting program is identified.
- Return System Configuration to normal startup after testing. Leaving the computer in a diagnostic boot can prevent expected software from loading.
If the error remains in a clean boot, third-party interference is less likely. Restore normal startup and proceed to escalation rather than making increasingly invasive changes.

| Remedy | Affected component | What it addresses | Reversible? | When to use it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Services console | Windows Update, BITS, and any dependent Store/Xbox/Minecraft transfer path | A service that is disabled or stopped | Yes; the startup setting can be changed back | First step for the suspected 0x80070422 condition |
wsreset |
Microsoft Store | Store cache or launch-state problems after services are checked | Yes; it is a built-in Store reset | Store downloads or updates still fail |
| Clean boot | Third-party background services and startup programs | Software interference that prevents a service from starting | Yes; restore normal startup afterward | Services revert, fail to start, or produce Error 1058 |
| Administrator or Microsoft support | Managed policy, damaged configuration, or unresolved service failure | Problems that the local account cannot safely change | Depends on the administrator’s remediation | Clean boot fails, settings are locked, or the service remains disabled |
What not to do first
- Do not edit the registry as an opening move. Registry changes can make Windows services or dependent components harder to recover, and the basic Services and Store tools are safer and reversible.
- Do not replace system files without a specific diagnosis. The available evidence points to service state, not to a confirmed missing or corrupted file.
- Do not treat a third-party utility as proof of a fix. A tool may identify unrelated issues, but no utility can guarantee repair of every Store, Xbox, Minecraft, or Windows Update failure.
- Do not repeatedly toggle services without recording the result. Note which service was disabled, whether Start succeeded, and what happened after reboot. This makes escalation substantially more useful.
When to escalate
Contact Microsoft support, your organization’s administrator, or a qualified Windows technician when any of the following applies:
- The exact code remains after Windows Update and BITS are enabled and running.
- Services immediately return to Disabled after you change them.
- Error 1058 persists in a clean boot.
- The Services console is blocked, the controls are greyed out, or you lack administrator credentials.
- Multiple Windows components fail and the computer has recently undergone a policy, security-software, or system-configuration change.
Provide the exact on-screen code, the affected component, the Windows edition, the service status before and after the change, and whether wsreset altered Store behavior. That information distinguishes a local service problem from a managed-policy or broader Windows configuration issue.
Optional shortcut after the manual checks
As an optional shortcut, Outbyte PC Repair can look for common Windows issues, adjust settings that contribute to CPU, RAM, or disk load, clean temporary and cache files, and provide an app-crash log. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary and no tool repairs every crash. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, with a free trial by category of at least two days before a paid subscription.
Bottom line
Start by treating 0x8007422 as a likely misread of 0x80070422. In services.msc, enable and start Windows Update and BITS, then retry the Store, Xbox, Minecraft, or Windows Update action. Run wsreset only when the Microsoft Store remains affected. If Windows reports Error 1058 or will not keep the services enabled, isolate third-party interference with a clean boot and escalate to an administrator or qualified support instead of editing the registry or system files first.
