A Skate connection error is not automatically a problem with your home internet. Electronic Arts documents separate causes for server outages, EA-server failures, an EA-account link mismatch, a VPN, and the EA App being offline. Start with server-status pages, then test your connection, disable VPN software, check EA App online mode on PC, and verify account linking when the code points to Playtest access.
What Skate needs before troubleshooting
Skate is a free-to-play, online multiplayer skateboarding game. EA requires a persistent internet connection and an EA account. The game is available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, with cross-play across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. A connection failure can therefore involve the game service, EA services, the platform network, your account configuration, or your local connection.

Write down the exact error number and the platform where it appears. “Skate connection lost,” “can’t connect to EA servers,” and a failure while joining a session can describe different problems. The code determines which official check should come first.

Follow this diagnosis order
- Check service status first. Look at the official Skate status, EA server status, and the relevant PlayStation or Xbox network status page. If a service is down, an error may remain until that service is restored; changing local settings will not repair an outage.
- If services are operating, test your connection. Use EA’s connection-troubleshooting guidance and your console’s or PC’s built-in network test. Note whether the test fails generally or only when Skate starts.
- Disable a VPN. EA specifically includes VPN state in the remedy for error 852146987. Turn the VPN off completely, not just for a single browser tab, and relaunch Skate.
- On PC, confirm that the EA App is online. An EA App in offline mode can produce the documented 852146987 connection-to-EA-servers error.
- For Playtest or identity errors, check account linking. Open the EA Account Connections page and make sure the console account is linked to the EA account used when signing up.
- Contact EA Support with evidence. Include the complete code, platform, when the failure occurs, and which status and connection checks you completed.

The code descriptions do not establish a guaranteed outage duration, latency limit, success rate, or single cause for every occurrence. Use them to choose the first branch, then confirm what is happening on your platform.

When Skate or EA services are down
A server-side problem is the most important explanation to rule out because it affects many players at once. Error 3967269002 explicitly warns that the problem can be with the server. Error 1478078408 similarly points to possible EA-server issues. Check all three layers that can prevent a session from starting:
- Skate service status: confirms whether the game service itself is reporting an incident.
- EA server status: identifies a wider EA service problem that can affect authentication or matchmaking.
- Your platform network status: checks the PlayStation or Xbox service that carries sign-in and online play. On PC, check the EA service and the launcher state.
Use the status information as a decision point. If an incident is active, wait for the service to recover and try again later. EA’s guidance indicates that server-related codes may clear only after service is restored. Reinstalling Skate, changing DNS settings, or repeatedly resetting an otherwise working network cannot resolve an outage.
If every status page reports normal operation, record the time of the check and move to the connection branch. A status page can show the current service state, not necessarily every short-lived or regional disruption, so the exact time and region are useful when you contact support.

When services are operational, use EA’s connection-troubleshooting guidance and the network test built into your platform. The goal is to separate a general connectivity failure from a Skate-only failure.

If other online games and services also fail
Run the platform’s network test and check whether the console or PC can sign in to its network and reach other online services. If the test itself reports a failure, resolve that platform or home-network problem first. Capture the exact message rather than paraphrasing it. Avoid assuming that a single Skate error proves the router is at fault; EA documents server causes for multiple codes.
If everything else works but Skate fails
Close Skate fully, confirm the platform is signed in, and launch it again after completing the status check. If the same code returns, follow the code-specific branch below. A failure that appears only when entering online play can indicate that the game reaches authentication but cannot establish the next service connection; it is still not proof of a particular home-network defect.
Keep the test reproducible
- Note whether the error happens at launch, during sign-in, while joining a session, or after you have been playing.
- Record whether another account on the same platform sees the same message, if you can test safely.
- Write down the platform model and whether you are using PC, PlayStation, or Xbox.
- Do not change several unrelated settings at once; otherwise you will not know which change affected the result.
Fix error 852146987 on PC
For error 852146987, EA’s documented remedies are specific: disable any VPN and make sure the EA App is not in offline mode.

Disable the VPN completely
- Exit or disconnect the VPN application that is routing the PC’s traffic.
- Confirm that the VPN indicator or connection status shows it is disconnected.
- Close Skate and the EA App, then reopen the EA App while the normal connection is active.
- Start Skate and check whether the same code appears.
If the error disappears, the VPN state was relevant to that attempt. If it remains, leave the VPN disabled while you complete the EA App check and the standard connection test so that the results are comparable.

Put the EA App online
- Open the EA App and inspect its connection state.
- If it is in offline mode, switch it back to online mode and allow it to sign in.
- Wait until the app has completed sign-in before launching Skate.
- If the app cannot sign in, record that message separately; it is useful evidence for EA Support.
The 852146987 guidance does not establish that reinstalling the game, buying networking hardware, or changing a subscription will fix the error. Start with the two documented conditions.
Fix error 480232561 by checking account identity
Error 480232561 is different from a general network failure. EA says the console account may not be linked to the EA account used during Playtest signup. This can happen when a player signs up with one EA account but later launches the game while the console profile is connected to another.
- Identify the EA account you used for the Playtest signup. Do not assume it is the same email address currently open in a browser or launcher.
- Open the EA Account Connections page for that account.
- Check the linked console identity and compare it with the PlayStation or Xbox account currently signed in.
- If the accounts do not match, link the correct console account to the EA account used for signup, following EA’s account-linking prompts.
- Sign out and back in where EA requests it, then relaunch Skate and test the same action that produced the code.
This branch applies to account identity and Playtest access. It does not prove that every login failure is an account-link problem. If the page already shows the correct link, return to the service-status and connection checks and include the confirmed linkage in any support request.
Platform-specific checks
PC
- Check EA service status and the EA App’s online state.
- For 852146987, disable the VPN before retesting.
- Use EA’s connection guidance and the operating system’s network test if other services are failing.
PlayStation
- Check Skate, EA, and PlayStation Network status before local troubleshooting.
- Confirm the console is signed in to the intended PlayStation account.
- For 480232561, compare that console identity with the account shown on EA Account Connections.
Xbox
- Check Skate, EA, and Xbox network status.
- Confirm the console is signed in to the intended Xbox account.
- For 480232561, verify that this Xbox identity is linked to the EA account used during Playtest signup.
Cross-play means a PC, PlayStation, and Xbox player can be in the same supported multiplayer environment, but cross-play does not remove the requirement for each player to have a working platform sign-in, persistent internet connection, and EA account.

Use failure timing as a diagnostic clue

What to send EA Support
Support can diagnose a connection error more efficiently when the report distinguishes an outage from a configuration problem. Include:
- The full error code, including every digit.
- Platform: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, or Xbox Series X|S.
- Whether the failure occurs at launch, sign-in, Playtest access, session joining, or during play.
- The date and time of the attempt and your region.
- The result of Skate, EA, and platform status checks.
- The result of the platform or PC connection test.
- For PC, whether a VPN was disabled and whether the EA App was online.
- For error 480232561, which EA account was used for signup and whether the intended console account appears on EA Account Connections.
This information lets support see which official branch you followed instead of treating every “can’t connect to EA servers” report as the same fault.
Common mistakes that waste time
- Starting with a router reset: Check service status first because 3967269002 and 1478078408 can be server-related.
- Assuming every code means weak internet: 480232561 points to account linking, while 852146987 calls out VPN and EA App state.
- Checking only one status page: Skate, EA, and the platform network are separate points of failure.
- Testing with a VPN still enabled: That leaves the documented 852146987 condition unchanged.
- Using the wrong EA account: For Playtest access, the signup account and the linked console identity must correspond.
- Reporting only “connection lost”: The exact number and platform determine the useful troubleshooting path.
