If Slay the Spire 2 crashes or will not start on Steam Deck, begin by updating the game and SteamOS, fully shutting down the Deck, and verifying the game files. If those checks do not help, test recent Proton versions one at a time—but treat Proton as a diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix. Steam lists the Early Access game as supporting SteamOS and Linux, and the fixes documented so far address specific bugs rather than every crash or black screen.
Start with the reversible checks
Work through these steps in order, retrying the game after each change. That makes it easier to identify what helped and to undo a change that made things worse.
- Update and cold restart. Install available updates for Slay the Spire 2 and SteamOS. From the Deck’s Power menu, choose Shut Down; turn it back on and try launching the game again. A full shutdown is more useful here than simply putting the Deck to sleep.
- Temporarily undo recent system changes. If the problem started after changing BIOS settings, performance tweaks, plugins, or third-party utilities, restore the relevant settings to their defaults or disable the changes for a test. If that does not help, you can re-enable them.
- Verify the game files. In Steam, open the game’s Properties > Installed Files and choose the option to verify the integrity of the installed files. When verification finishes, try the game again.
- Test the install location if it is on removable storage. If the game is installed on a microSD card or another external drive, move it to the Deck’s internal SSD and retest. This is a way to isolate whether the install location is involved, not a general reason to buy more storage.
Should you force Proton?
Steam lists Slay the Spire 2 as supporting SteamOS and Linux, so forcing Proton is not automatically the right first step. If the default setup still fails after the checks above, Proton can be useful as a controlled comparison. A user-posted reply in a Steam Community discussion, described as being from Steam Support, suggests trying the latest Proton release and then the previous release if needed; the forum post is not a verified game-specific Steam Support article.
- Open the game’s Properties > Compatibility settings in Steam and enable the option to force a compatibility tool.
- Test the latest Proton release available in the list. Keep other settings unchanged and record whether the game launches, crashes, or behaves differently.
- If the issue remains, test the previous release. Change only one version at a time; if the result is worse, turn off forced compatibility or return to the prior setting.
Proton is not a universal launch fix. A ValveSoftware/Proton report opened on March 21, 2026, describes loading or main-menu crashes on Intel Broadwell hardware running Fedora with Mesa. Its tests of Proton Experimental, Proton 9.0-1, and Proton 6.3 did not resolve that particular case. It is a caution against assuming a Proton switch will solve Linux launch failures, not evidence that Steam Deck has the same problem: the issue report.

Match the next step to the symptom
The game crashes during play
Mega Crit’s June 19, 2026 v0.107.1 notes list a fix for a Linux combat crash involving UI elements removed mid-frame. The notes also name a Linux crash when ICU libraries are unavailable. Those entries establish that specific bugs were addressed; they do not identify the cause of every crash that happens during a run. The notes are reproduced by SteamDB: v0.107.1 patch notes.
The game will not launch or shows a black screen
The sources available here do not establish a single current fix for black-screen or startup failures. Apply the reversible checks first, then use Proton testing only as described above. Steam’s store page says further fixes and broader hardware compatibility are planned as part of Early Access, so behavior may change with later updates: Slay the Spire 2 on Steam.

The Deck has controller or audio trouble
The v0.107.1 notes also list controller fixes, including stopping rapid switching between detected input types and several controller-navigation issues, as well as a change to Linux audio behavior. If controls or sound fail alongside a crash, note those details separately when reporting the issue; the patch notes do not show that every controller or audio problem has the same cause.
Work out whether the problem is game-specific
Compare Slay the Spire 2 with other Steam games that are marked Verified. If other games also crash, the issue may involve broader Deck stability rather than this game alone; if only this game fails, that narrows the report but does not prove the cause. The Steam Support page for the game links to community discussions and guides, but the reviewed page does not provide a game-specific Deck crash remedy: Steam Support: Slay the Spire 2.

What to include when you report a persistent problem
Make the report reproducible and specific. Mega Crit says on its Steam Early Access page that player feedback helps the team balance content, add quality-of-life features, and make sure the game runs without issues. The page also describes an in-game feedback tool: Mega Crit’s Early Access information.
- Describe exactly what happens: failure to launch, black screen, crash during a run, missing audio, or controller behavior.
- Record when the issue began and whether it happens in Gaming Mode, Desktop Mode, or both.
- Include the Deck and SteamOS versions, the game version, install location, and any forced compatibility setting.
- Say which checks you tried and what changed after each one, including whether other Verified games show similar symptoms.
Steam’s game support page links to community discussions and guides if you want to compare symptoms or share a report with other players.
