How to Fix sndvolsso.dll Errors in Windows

If Windows reports that sndvolsso.dll is missing, cannot be found, or is corrupted, repair Windows’ own component store and protected system files before doing anything else. Install pending updates, restart, run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth from an elevated Command Prompt, and then run sfc /scannow. If the error appears with a broken volume mixer or no sound, continue with Windows’ audio and driver checks. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website.

What sndvolsso.dll is and why the error appears

A Windows system-file inventory identifies sndvolsso.dll as a Microsoft Corporation file normally stored in C:WindowsSystem32. The exact file version, size, and timestamp depend on your Windows release and update level. One recorded build lists version 10.0.26100.7019, a size of 272.00 KB, and a timestamp of 2025-11-11; that is an example of one build, not a universal fingerprint for every PC.

Windows does not publish a dedicated troubleshooting article for this particular DLL. In practice, a message naming it usually means that a protected Windows component is missing or damaged, or that a related audio component is failing. The filename can appear alongside symptoms such as a volume mixer that will not open, a missing sound icon, or an inability to find the file. Those symptoms can also come from an audio driver, a disabled output device, muted hardware, or a Windows audio setting, so replacing one file blindly is not a reliable diagnosis.

The repair path below separates system-file damage from audio-device problems. It starts with the least destructive, supported actions and escalates only when the earlier step gives evidence that it is needed.

Before changing anything

Confirm the Windows installation and symptom

  • Press Windows key + R, enter winver, and note the Windows edition and build. You will need this information if a matching installation source is required later.
  • Write down the complete error text and when it appears: during sign-in, when opening the volume mixer, when launching a game, or only after connecting a particular audio device.
  • Check whether Windows still starts normally. A system that boots can be repaired from an administrator Command Prompt; a system that cannot start should be handled through Windows Recovery Environment.

Do not remove or overwrite the file

Do not delete a copy from C:WindowsSystem32, rename it to suppress the message, or copy a similarly named file from another computer. Windows builds can contain different revisions, and a file from a different build may not match the component store or the rest of the audio stack. A standalone download also gives you no dependable authenticity or version guarantee.

Protect your work

Save open documents and close applications before running repairs. DISM and System File Checker normally preserve personal files, but a restart is part of the process and may be requested more than once.

Repair Windows system files in the supported order

1. Install updates and restart

Open Settings > Windows Update (on some Windows 10 installations, Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update). Select Check for updates, install the updates Windows offers, and restart even if the system does not explicitly require it. Microsoft’s audio troubleshooting sequence places updates and a restart near the beginning because a pending component update or an incomplete servicing operation can leave system files out of sync.

After the restart, reproduce the original action. If the sndvolsso.dll message has disappeared, no further file replacement is necessary. If it remains, continue with DISM and SFC.

2. Run DISM from an elevated Command Prompt

  1. Open the Start menu and type Command Prompt.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  3. Enter the following command exactly, then press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

/Online tells DISM to service the Windows installation that is currently running. /Cleanup-image checks the component store, and /Restorehealth asks DISM to repair corruption. The scan can pause at a percentage for several minutes; do not close the window merely because progress appears slow. Keep the computer connected to power and, normally, to the internet so Windows Update can supply repair files.

Wait for DISM to finish and report whether the operation completed successfully. If it reports that source files could not be found, do not move on to random DLL downloads; use the alternate-source procedure described below.

3. Run System File Checker after DISM

In the same administrator Command Prompt, run:

sfc /scannow

Leave the window open until verification reaches 100 percent. Microsoft describes the roles this way: “DISM provides the files required to repair your corrupted files,” while “The sfc /scannow command will scan all protected system files and replace corrupted files with a cached copy.” Running SFC after DISM matters because DISM repairs the source that SFC relies on.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Interpret the SFC result

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations. SFC found no missing or corrupted protected files. If the DLL message continues, investigate the audio device, driver, or the application that triggers the message rather than repeatedly running SFC.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. Restart Windows and test the original action again. If the error is gone, the protected-file repair addressed it.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Review the CBS log at C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log for the unrepaired entries, then proceed to the matching-source DISM method or Windows recovery options. Do not substitute an unverified DLL for the files SFC could not repair.
  • Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation. Restart and repeat the scan once. If it still cannot run, use Windows Recovery Environment or repair the component store with a matching source before trying SFC again.

When the DLL error comes with sound or mixer problems

A clean SFC result does not rule out an audio problem. Follow these checks when the volume mixer fails, the speaker icon is missing, or applications have no sound.

Check the selected output and physical controls

  1. Select the speaker icon on the taskbar and open the output-device list. Choose the headphones, speakers, monitor, or other device you actually intend to use.
  2. Open the device’s volume controls and confirm that neither the master volume nor the application volume is muted or set to zero.
  3. Check cable connections, power switches, hardware mute keys, and the physical volume control on the speakers or headset. For a monitor connected by HDMI or DisplayPort, confirm that the monitor is the selected output and that its own speakers are enabled.
  4. Disconnect and reconnect the audio device, then test a second output if one is available. This distinguishes a Windows-wide failure from a single device or cable issue.

Turn off audio enhancements temporarily

Open Settings > System > Sound, select the affected output device, and look for Audio enhancements. Set enhancements to Off and test playback. Enhancement layers can interfere with an otherwise functioning driver; disabling them is a diagnostic step, not a requirement to leave every device without enhancements permanently.

Run the built-in audio troubleshooter

In Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, find the audio troubleshooter and select Run. Follow its prompts for the output device it detects. Windows may reset a service, select a different endpoint, or identify a disabled device. Apply a suggested change only if it matches the device you use, then test the mixer and an ordinary sound file.

Separate a mixer-interface failure from an audio failure

If sound plays normally but only the mixer window or taskbar control fails, the hardware path may be healthy. After DISM and SFC report no corruption, note whether the failure is limited to one user account or one application. A game-specific failure should be tested with another application; a system-wide failure should be tested with another output device. This evidence helps determine whether to continue with Windows audio settings or concentrate on a driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repair or roll back the audio driver

Use Device Manager when the output device is absent, marked with a warning icon, repeatedly disconnects, or the problem began immediately after a driver update.

  • Powerful downloadable software -- control panel software gives powerful Audio Enhancements and unprecedented control; Also includes optimized profiles for multiple earphone brands
  • No drivers needed -- works straight out of the box
  1. Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers. Also check Audio inputs and outputs for the endpoint itself.
  3. Right-click the affected device and choose Update driver, then select the option to search automatically. Restart if Windows installs an update.
  4. If updating does not help, right-click the device again, choose Uninstall device, confirm, and restart. Windows can reinstall the device driver during startup.
  5. If the issue began after a recent driver update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and choose Roll Back Driver when that button is available.
  6. If the manufacturer-specific driver continues to fail, test the generic Windows audio driver offered through the device’s update options. Record the original driver details first so you can return to them.

After each driver change, test the same output and application that originally exposed the problem. Do not make several driver changes at once; otherwise you will not know which change affected the result.

Provide DISM with a matching repair source

DISM normally obtains replacement components through Windows Update. If it reports that source files cannot be found, Microsoft documents using a Windows installation image or network location that matches the installed edition and build. A mismatched source can produce another servicing error or install the wrong component revision.

  1. Obtain installation media that matches the Windows release, edition, language, and architecture shown by winver and Settings > System > About. Mount the ISO or connect the approved network source and note its drive letter or path.
  2. Identify the image index that corresponds to your edition if the source contains multiple editions. The index must represent the same edition you are repairing.
  3. Run DISM with the source path and the /LimitAccess switch so it uses that source instead of contacting Windows Update. The documented pattern is:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth /Source:<path> /LimitAccess

Replace <path> with the actual matching source path. Do not copy a single sndvolsso.dll out of the media. The purpose of this method is to repair the Windows image as a set of components. When DISM completes, run sfc /scannow again and restart.

  1. Start the PC and allow Windows to enter recovery, or boot from approved Windows installation media.
  2. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
  3. Select the Windows installation when prompted and let the repair complete. The process can restart the computer.

Microsoft describes Startup Repair as “a Windows recovery tool that can fix certain system problems that might prevent Windows from starting.” It can attempt to repair missing or damaged system files and boot-configuration problems, but it is not a guarantee that every sndvolsso.dll-related symptom will be corrected. If Startup Repair cannot restore startup, use the recovery options available for your installation and preserve personal data before considering a reset or reinstall.

Choose the next step from the evidence

What you observe Most appropriate action What the result tells you
Windows boots and updates are pending Install updates and restart A servicing mismatch may be cleared without command-line repair.
The DLL error remains after updating Run DISM, then SFC as administrator These tools test and repair the Windows image and protected files.
SFC reports successful repairs Restart and reproduce the error The protected-file corruption was likely involved.
SFC finds no violations but sound is absent Check output selection, mute state, enhancements, and the audio troubleshooter The remaining fault is more likely an endpoint, setting, service, or driver issue.
Device Manager shows a warning or the issue follows a driver update Update, reinstall, or roll back the audio driver The driver path needs attention rather than a replacement DLL.
DISM cannot find source files Run DISM with a matching installation or network source and /LimitAccess Windows Update could not supply the components; source matching becomes critical.
Windows will not start Use Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair Recovery Environment can attempt startup and system-file repairs.

What not to do

  • Do not download sndvolsso.dll from an unverified DLL library.
  • Do not replace it with a file copied from another Windows build, another edition, or another computer.
  • Do not disable system-file protection or delete the original file to silence an error.
  • Do not assume that a clean SFC scan proves every audio driver and output endpoint is healthy.
  • Do not keep repeating DISM and SFC indefinitely when their results are clean; move to audio-device troubleshooting or recovery based on the symptom.

Verify the repair

After the final restart, verify the original failure rather than relying only on the absence of a pop-up. Open the volume controls, play sound through the intended output, launch the application that triggered the message, and test another audio application. If the file error is gone but one device still fails, document the device name, driver version, Windows build, and the exact application affected. That record makes a future driver rollback or Windows recovery decision much safer than replacing system files by guesswork.

The supported solution is therefore a sequence: update and restart; repair the Windows image with DISM; run SFC; troubleshoot output settings and enhancements; repair the audio driver when evidence points there; use a matching source if DISM lacks files; and use Startup Repair when Windows cannot boot. A standalone DLL download is not part of that sequence.
