How to Fix Sound Files Not Working in Your Stream

Trace silent stream audio from the file and source through OBS’s mixer, output routing, YouTube Live settings, and viewer playback.

If a sound file plays on your computer but viewers cannot hear it, check the path from the file to the stream in order: confirm the file and intended audio track, check the source and mixer, then verify stream routing and the platform’s audio settings. Hearing a file locally—or seeing an OBS meter move—does not by itself prove that its audio is reaching viewers.

Find where the sound disappears

Work through these checks while playing the affected file or sound effect. Change one thing at a time and test again so you can identify the failing link rather than masking it.

  1. Play the file outside the stream. Open it in a media player and confirm that the relevant section has audible sound. If it is a video with multiple audio tracks, select the track that contains the intended sound.
  2. Check that the streaming software can read the source. In OBS Studio, add a file directly with a Media Source. OBS documents MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV as supported audio types for that source. If using a VLC Video source for extended media support or a playlist, install VLC; OBS requires 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS. The VLC source also lets you select an audio track. OBS Project: Media Sources
  3. Watch the source’s mixer meter during playback. In OBS, open the Audio Mixer and check whether the relevant source’s meter moves. Make sure the source is not muted. A moving meter indicates audio is reaching that mixer source, but it does not establish that the stream output includes it. OBS Project: Audio Mixer Guide
  4. Check local monitoring separately from stream output. OBS’s monitoring control sends source audio to the configured monitoring device. If you cannot hear the file but the meter moves, check the monitoring setting and selected device. A problem with your headphones or monitoring device does not, on its own, show that viewers are receiving silence: monitoring and stream output are separate paths.
  5. If the mixer moves but viewers hear nothing, inspect output routing and stream health. Confirm that the audio source is assigned to the output you are streaming, then check your platform’s encoder or stream-health dashboard. Where available, use a short private or unlisted test. YouTube recommends checking sound directly in the encoder and consulting stream-health errors; its guidance distinguishes problems in the encoder or source path from problems with the outbound connection. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream

OBS Studio checks when the source is silent

Use the right source for the file

For a single media file, try an OBS Media Source and verify that the file path points to the intended file. If the file is a video, confirm that its audio track is selected and that the source is not configured in a way that prevents playback. For a playlist or a file that needs VLC support, use OBS’s VLC Video source and check that VLC is installed with the same architecture as OBS. OBS Project: Media Sources

Use the mixer to separate source problems from output problems

Start playback and look for activity on the expected source in the Audio Mixer. If there is no movement, the issue is upstream of the mixer: recheck the file’s sound, chosen track, source type, path, and playback. If the meter moves, check mute and stream-output routing next. OBS documents mixer meters, mute controls, and monitoring controls; these are different checks, not interchangeable proof that the stream is audible. OBS Project: Audio Mixer Guide

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Check the monitoring device only if you cannot hear it locally

If the mixer shows activity but your headphones or speakers are silent, check the configured monitoring device and the source’s monitoring control. Test with a known-working output device. Do not treat a monitoring-device fault as the explanation for viewers’ silence unless the stream-output checks also point to it.

Check YouTube Live audio settings

These settings apply to YouTube Live’s documented RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance, not automatically to every streaming destination. Check YouTube’s current requirements and the settings shown for your stream before changing an encoder profile.

Setting YouTube’s documented guidance What to check
Audio codec AAC or MP3 Confirm the encoder is sending a supported codec.
Sample rate 44.1 kHz for stereo; 48 kHz for 5.1 Match the setting to the audio format you are sending.
Stereo audio bitrate 128 Kbps Check that the encoder’s stereo audio bitrate is set appropriately.

YouTube’s error guidance includes unsupported codecs, incorrect sample rates or bitrates, no audio, and multiple audio streams among possible issues. If an error appears, use the current encoder and stream-health details to identify which applies instead of assuming that one setting explains every silent stream. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

Use a viewer-side test to isolate device-specific silence

After a short test stream, check playback on a second browser or device. If the sound works on a computer but is poor or missing on mobile, mono compatibility is one possibility: YouTube says stereo audio with poor mono compatibility can lose quality or become muted when converted to mono on mobile, and advises checking phase. Treat this as a targeted explanation for a device-specific symptom, not a general explanation for every silent live stream. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot audio or video issues with uploads on YouTube

Common symptoms and what to check next

Symptom Likely diagnostic branch Next check
The file is silent in a media player and in the stream. The file may contain no audible content at that point, or the wrong track may be selected. Play another section and inspect the file’s available audio tracks.
The file plays locally, but OBS’s source meter does not move. OBS may not be reading the intended file or track, or the source type may not be suitable. Check the Media Source path and format; for VLC Video, confirm VLC is installed and the intended track is selected.
The OBS meter moves, but you cannot hear the source. The monitoring route or selected listening device may be wrong. Check the source’s monitoring control and OBS’s configured monitoring device.
The OBS meter moves, but viewers hear nothing. The source may not be included in stream output, or the encoder, connection, or platform ingest may be at fault. Inspect output routing, encoder sound, and the platform’s stream-health details; run a short test if available.
Audio works on a computer but not on mobile. Playback-device behavior or stereo-to-mono compatibility may be involved. Compare another device and, for YouTube, check stereo phase and mono compatibility.
