If South of Midnight crashes on Xbox, first check whether your game is updated and note exactly where the crash happens. Compulsion Games says version 1.2.0 fixed one specific crash during the Chapter 11-to-Chapter 12 transition on Xbox Series S. That note does not identify a general cause for crashes on Series S or Series X.
Start by identifying what is crashing
Before trying fixes, distinguish a game crash from a console problem. Does South of Midnight close to the Xbox dashboard, freeze while the console stays on, or does the entire console shut down? Also note whether it happens only in this game or in several games, and whether it occurs during the Chapter 11-to-12 transition. These details help describe the issue; they do not by themselves establish its cause.
- Write down your console model: Xbox Series X or Series S.
- Record the chapter or checkpoint and what you were doing immediately before the failure.
- Note whether the game closes, freezes, or the console turns off.
- Check whether other games are affected.
Update the game if it crashes between Chapters 11 and 12
Compulsion Games’ version 1.2.0 patch notes say: “Fixed a crash when transitioning from Chapter 11 to Chapter 12 (Xbox Series S only).” The fix is specifically documented for Series S at that transition; the note does not establish the same bug on Series X or explain other crash patterns. Check Compulsion Games’ support page for its patch notes, then install any update Xbox offers for the game.
- Highlight South of Midnight in your Xbox games list.
- Open the game’s options and check for available updates.
- Install any update offered, then retry the Chapter 11-to-12 transition.
The cited support page documents the 1.2.0 fix but does not establish the current Xbox build number. Use the update offered by your console rather than assuming a particular version is the latest.

If South of Midnight still crashes on Xbox Series X or S
The reviewed official information does not identify a single cause or provide a console-specific troubleshooting sequence for crashes outside that fixed Series S transition issue. If updating does not help, contact Compulsion Games through its Help Center. Include your console model, the game version if visible, the chapter or checkpoint, what the crash looks like, and whether other games also fail. Those details can help support assess your case; Compulsion does not publish them as a required checklist.
Compulsion links a separate crash troubleshooting guide, but its detailed steps are for PC. PC advice such as updating graphics drivers, changing overclock settings, checking PC requirements, or updating a motherboard BIOS is not an Xbox console fix.

Other reported issues are not Xbox crash fixes
Compulsion’s known-issues page separately discusses inconsistent frame rates for some players using recent NVIDIA GPUs and washed-out or overly bright images on some HDR TVs. The NVIDIA report concerns PC performance, while the HDR suggestions concern image quality. Neither establishes a cause or remedy for an Xbox game crash.
