Ubisoft’s current PC listing says that online features are no longer supported and that multiplayer and co-op modes are no longer functional. If the game fails before its menu appears, you have a local compatibility or installation problem, which needs a different diagnosis.
The steps below identify which case you have, establish what the current PC listings actually promise, and show how to investigate a launch failure without treating old online instructions as current support.

Identify where the failure occurs
Write down the exact point at which the game stops. This prevents you from applying launch troubleshooting to a retired online service, or changing network settings when Windows is the real problem.
| What you see | What it means | Use this part of the guide |
|---|---|---|
| The executable does not open, closes immediately, shows a blank screen, or crashes before the main menu | A local launch, compatibility, installation, or configuration fault | Launch troubleshooting |
| The main menu works, but an online multiplayer or co-op sign-in, invite, or matchmaking attempt fails | The official online service is discontinued | Online-service status |
| An old guide tells you to create a multiplayer profile or sign in to an online account | Historical instructions from the original PC release | Why older co-op guides no longer apply |
| A LAN or Internet option is visible in an old manual or screenshot | Documentation of the service and game features as they existed then, not proof of present availability | What can and cannot be concluded about alternatives |
If you can reach the menu, test the launch issue separately from the network issue. A successful boot does not imply that the game’s online backend still exists. Conversely, a failed boot prevents you from determining anything about online functionality, so solve the local startup question first.

Note whether the failure is repeatable and whether it happens before or after a launcher window appears. Also note whether the game was ever working on this computer. A first-run failure, a failure after a Windows update, and a failure after replacing configuration files can have different causes, even when all three look like a silent close.
Official online co-op is no longer functional
Ubisoft’s current PC game listing states: “Online features for this game are no longer supported. Multiplayer and co-op modes are no longer functional.” That is the decisive answer for official Internet co-op.
Because the service itself is no longer supported, the following actions cannot restore Ubisoft-hosted multiplayer:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Opening or forwarding ports on your router
- Changing DNS servers
- Disabling a firewall temporarily
- Reinstalling the game
- Creating another Ubisoft or multiplayer profile
- Buying a faster broadband connection
- Using the historical sign-in sequence from the manual
Those actions can sometimes resolve a connection problem when a live service is reachable. They cannot bring back a discontinued service. Do not expose your PC or router to unnecessary security risk while trying them.
The practical result is that there are no two current, verified official co-op routes to compare. If a current setup appears to work through an unofficial community method, its maintenance, security, supported game build, and legal status must be established independently. The available official information does not verify a particular replacement service, relay, mod, or tunneling tool, so this guide does not present one as a proven fix.
This status also changes how you should read error messages. A timeout, failed authentication prompt, or missing invite may look like a home-network fault, but the same symptom is expected when the service that handled the request has been retired. There is no useful escalation from changing one router setting to changing another once the official service is known to be unavailable.
Why old co-op instructions conflict with today’s status
The original PC manual describes a multiplayer profile, an online account sign-in flow, and co-op challenges playable over the Internet or LAN. Those instructions accurately describe the product’s historical design. They were written before Ubisoft’s current service-status notice.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When an old guide says to sign in, invite a partner, or select an Internet co-op challenge, read it as archival context. It explains what the menus once expected; it does not establish that the servers still accept authentication or session requests. The current Ubisoft listing supersedes that expectation for official online play.
This distinction also explains why two people can report apparently different results: one may be describing a successful local launch, while another is following an old online walkthrough against a service that has since been retired. Screenshots showing a profile-creation page or a LAN lobby prove only that those screens existed in the original release.
Check the current PC baseline before diagnosing a launch failure
Ubisoft currently lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 for its PC content. Steam Support also says the game can be played on Windows 10 and Windows 11. These are storefront compatibility listings, not a guarantee that every graphics driver, overlay, security product, or hardware configuration will launch correctly.
Steam Support publishes the following legacy requirements:

| Item | Published value | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 or Windows 11 | Current listed operating systems; compatibility is not guaranteed for every configuration |
| Memory | 1 GB RAM minimum; 1.5 GB recommended | Legacy storefront specification, not a modern performance guarantee |
| Storage | 8 GB available disk space | Required free space listed by Steam Support |
| Graphics API | DirectX 9.0c or later | Published requirement for the original software environment |
| Multiplayer bandwidth | 128 kbps upstream broadband or faster | Historical published requirement; it does not imply that multiplayer service remains available |
These numbers tell you whether your installation is broadly above the listed baseline. They do not prove that a modern Windows 10 or 11 system will start the game, and they cannot change Ubisoft’s online-service status.
The RAM and storage figures should be treated as a floor for the original software, not as a prediction of frame rate or stability on current systems. A computer can greatly exceed 1 GB of memory and still fail at startup because of a version-specific compatibility issue. Likewise, having more than 8 GB free does not confirm that the correct files were installed or that the executable matches the storefront release.
The 128 kbps upstream figure belongs in the same historical category. It describes the bandwidth requirement published for multiplayer at the time, not the bandwidth needed to reach a currently operating server. Do not use it to argue that a modern connection should be able to restore co-op.
A cautious launch-failure workflow
There is no current official source establishing one universal launch fix for every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation. Use the following order to narrow the problem, and treat any game-specific community workaround as a compatibility report rather than a guarantee.
1. Record the storefront and installed build
Note whether your copy is installed through Steam or another legitimate PC storefront, and record the game’s displayed version if the launcher or executable provides one. Do not mix files, launchers, or patches from a different release without confirming that they belong to your edition.
For a Steam installation, open the Steam client, go to Library, select Splinter Cell: Double Agent, and inspect the game’s properties and installed-files information. The exact labels can change with Steam updates, so use the current client wording rather than an old screenshot. If the game is not from Steam, use that storefront’s own installed-file and update controls.
Keep the storefront information with the error report. A workaround documented for one distribution may refer to a different executable, directory layout, or update history. Assuming that every PC copy is interchangeable is a common way to apply an otherwise reasonable fix to the wrong build.
2. Confirm Windows and the basic published requirements
- Open Settings > System > About and confirm whether the PC is running Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- Check available space on the drive containing the game and compare it with the listed 8 GB requirement.
- Check installed memory in the same Windows information area. The published baseline is 1 GB minimum and 1.5 GB recommended.
- Confirm that the system provides DirectX 9.0c or later as required by the Steam listing.
Passing these checks only establishes that the machine is above the store’s stated baseline. It does not identify a driver conflict or prove that a particular executable will run. Failing one of them does not prove that upgrading hardware is the right solution either; first verify that the requirement was read for this title and this installation.
3. Capture the symptom before changing files
Record whether the game shows an error message, closes silently, remains on a black screen, or reaches a menu before failing. Also record when the problem began, whether it occurs after an update, and whether another Windows user account behaves differently. This information is more useful than repeatedly reinstalling without preserving the original symptom.
If Windows displays an error code, keep the code and its exact punctuation. A fix for one executable, graphics API, or build should not be generalized to every launch failure. A screenshot can help, but include the written text as well so another person can search for the exact condition.
4. Check the game-specific compatibility guidance
PCGamingWiki maintains a game-specific technical page that documents persistent compatibility problems and identifies version 1.02a as the latest official patch. Use that page to match your storefront, release, operating system, and symptom before attempting a workaround.

Community-maintained guidance is valuable for legacy PC games, but it is not current official support. A note that helps one hardware or release combination may be irrelevant to another. Read the conditions attached to each recommendation and keep a backup of configuration files before editing them.

Look for the exact scope of a note: whether it applies to a particular version, a particular display problem, or a specific Windows configuration. Do not turn a page that lists several possible fixes into a claim that every player must perform all of them. If the symptom does not match, stop and preserve the original state rather than experimenting broadly.
5. Treat patch files with particular caution
The community patch listing warns that it makes no safety guarantee for contributed files. Do not download an executable patch from an unverified mirror merely because a forum post calls it a fix. Verify the file’s origin, intended game version, and integrity through a source you can trust; if those cannot be established, do not run it.
The fact that 1.02a is identified as the latest official patch does not mean that every copy needs a manual download. First determine whether your storefront already provides the appropriate update and whether the reported issue is actually version-related.
A safe troubleshooting record should note the original version, the file name and publisher of anything you install, and how to undo the change. If a download asks you to replace an executable but gives no verifiable origin, no supported version, and no removal instructions, that is a reason to stop, not a reason to disable security software.

6. Change one variable at a time
When a documented compatibility note suggests a setting change, apply only that change, test a fresh launch, and record the result. Changing several files, compatibility modes, drivers, and overlays simultaneously makes it impossible to tell which action helped or created a new fault.
If a change makes the problem worse, restore the backed-up configuration and return to the last known state. Avoid deleting files whose purpose you cannot identify. A clean, reproducible test is more useful than a computer that happens to launch once after several undocumented edits.
7. Stop treating a successful launch as an online fix
If the game finally reaches its menu, the local launch problem may be resolved, but official online co-op remains unavailable. Do not continue changing network settings on the assumption that a clean boot will revive Ubisoft’s retired multiplayer service.
Common approaches that waste time
- Port forwarding: useful only when a supported service is listening; it cannot recreate Ubisoft’s discontinued backend.
- Reinstalling repeatedly: can replace damaged local files, but it does not address every compatibility condition and cannot restore online co-op.
- Following the manual as a current network guide: the manual is historical documentation.
- Installing an unknown “fix” executable: the community patch listing expressly provides no safety guarantee for contributed files.
- Assuming the store’s Windows 10/11 label is a guarantee: storefront compatibility claims do not cover every modern hardware and software combination.
- Using the 128 kbps figure as proof that multiplayer should work: it is a historical bandwidth requirement, not evidence of a live service.
Another mistake is to diagnose every failure as a network problem because the title is associated with co-op. If the process never reaches the main menu, no invite, port, or account test can explain the immediate cause. Conversely, if the game launches and only the online option fails, repeatedly replacing local files is unlikely to change the service status.

The manual says co-op challenges were playable over the Internet or LAN when the original service and game environment were in operation. It does not, by itself, verify that a particular modern LAN emulation, tunnel, mod, or community server works.

- Does it support your exact storefront edition and game version?
- Does it provide LAN play, Internet play, or only a local workaround?
- Is the project maintained, and is there a dated record of current Windows support?
- Who publishes the files, and can their origin and integrity be verified?
- Does it require replacing executables or weakening Windows security controls?
- Can you remove it cleanly and restore an unmodified installation?
No source currently establishes a specific alternative that can be recommended as a reliable replacement for Ubisoft’s official co-op. Treat claims of guaranteed matchmaking, permanent server access, or one-click restoration skeptically unless the publisher, version support, and security provenance are clear.
A decision tree for your next step
- Fails before the menu: identify the storefront and build, check Windows 10/11 and the published baseline, capture the exact symptom, then consult the game-specific compatibility notes.
- Reaches the menu but online co-op fails: stop network troubleshooting; Ubisoft lists the official online features as unsupported and multiplayer and co-op as nonfunctional.
- An old guide demands account or profile setup: treat it as historical manual content, not current service documentation.
- A community patch is suggested: verify provenance and version first; do not run an unverified executable.
- No documented note matches your symptom: avoid claiming a universal fix. Preserve the error details and seek help specific to your storefront, build, GPU, and Windows configuration.
This decision tree is deliberately conservative. It separates facts established by the current store listings from configuration-specific advice that may change as Windows, drivers, and storefront clients change. That keeps a launch diagnosis honest without promising that an unsupported online mode can be revived.
What information to include when asking for targeted help
A useful support question should include the storefront, installed game version, Windows release, whether the game ever reaches the menu, the exact error text, and the point at which the failure occurs. Include whether the issue began after an update or configuration change. Do not include account passwords, license keys, or untrusted executable attachments.
Those details matter because the available guidance is configuration-specific. There is no evidence of a single launch procedure that works across every Windows 10 and Windows 11 system, and no verified official route that restores online co-op.
Also state which steps you already tried and whether each step changed the symptom. “It does not work” is less actionable than “the executable closes after the splash screen on Windows 11, before the menu, with no error.” A precise timeline helps others avoid suggesting the same irrelevant network fix for a local startup fault.
Frequently asked questions
Can port forwarding bring back Double Agent co-op?
No. Port forwarding can matter for a supported multiplayer service, but Ubisoft currently states that this game’s online features are no longer supported and that multiplayer and co-op are no longer functional. Router changes cannot recreate the retired backend.
Does the 128 kbps requirement mean online play should still work?
No. The 128 kbps upstream figure is a historical published multiplayer requirement. It describes the original product specification, not the present availability of Ubisoft servers or any modern replacement service.
Is Windows 10 or Windows 11 officially supported?
Ubisoft’s current PC listing and Steam Support list Windows 10 and Windows 11. That is a storefront compatibility statement, not a promise that every current driver, overlay, security product, or hardware combination will launch the game successfully.
Should I manually download patch 1.02a?
PCGamingWiki identifies 1.02a as the latest official patch, but its community patch listing warns that contributed files are not safety-guaranteed. Check whether your legitimate storefront already supplies the update, confirm that your symptom is version-related, and do not run an executable from an unverified mirror.
Can reinstalling fix a black screen or silent close?
It may replace damaged local files, but there is no universal official launch procedure for every Windows 10 or 11 configuration. Record the symptom, storefront, and build first, then consult version-specific compatibility notes instead of reinstalling repeatedly without a test plan.
Does the old manual prove that LAN co-op still works?
No. The manual documents the original multiplayer profile, sign-in flow, and Internet or LAN co-op design. Ubisoft’s current service notice supersedes that historical expectation for official online functionality.

Is there a verified community server or tunnel to recommend?
No specific current alternative is established here as reliable. Any unofficial option should be checked for exact edition and version support, maintenance, security provenance, removal instructions, and whether it offers LAN or Internet play.
What if the game launches but only the online menu fails?
Separate the successful local launch from the failed service connection. Once the menu works, the remaining official co-op failure is consistent with Ubisoft’s discontinued online status, not necessarily with a fault in your PC or home network.
Bottom line
For a connection failure during official online co-op, the fix is not on your PC: Ubisoft has retired the online features, and its current listing says multiplayer and co-op are no longer functional. For a failure before the menu, troubleshoot locally by identifying the storefront and build, checking the Windows 10/11 listing and legacy requirements, recording the exact symptom, and consulting version-specific community compatibility notes. Keep historical manual instructions and unverified patch executables out of the category of guaranteed solutions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can port forwarding bring back Splinter Cell: Double Agent co-op?
No. Port forwarding can matter for a supported multiplayer service, but Ubisoft states that this game’s online features are no longer supported and its multiplayer and co-op modes are no longer functional.
Does the 128 kbps requirement mean online play should still work?
No. That is a historical published multiplayer requirement, not evidence that Ubisoft’s servers or any replacement service are currently available.
Is Windows 10 or Windows 11 supported?
Ubisoft and Steam list both operating systems. The listing does not guarantee that every current driver, overlay, security product, or hardware configuration will launch the game.
Should I manually download patch 1.02a?
PCGamingWiki identifies 1.02a as the latest official patch, but community-contributed files have no safety guarantee. Check your storefront first and avoid unverified executable mirrors.
Can reinstalling fix a black screen or silent close?
It may replace damaged files, but there is no universal official launch fix. Record the exact symptom and build, then consult version-specific compatibility guidance.
Does the old manual prove LAN co-op still works?
No. It documents the original design. Ubisoft’s current service notice supersedes those historical instructions for official online play.
Is there a verified community server or tunnel?
No specific current alternative is established as reliable. Check edition support, maintenance, security provenance, and removal instructions before installing anything.
The Bottom Line
Ubisoft’s official online co-op for Splinter Cell: Double Agent is no longer functional. For local launch failures, identify your storefront and build, verify the listed Windows and legacy requirements, record the exact symptom, and use version-specific community guidance cautiously.
