Start by separating the symptom: a launcher that will not open, a game that fails immediately after launch, a crash during play, or uneven frame pacing require different checks. Then compare your computer with RSI’s published CIG-game requirements, update Windows and device drivers, close non-essential software, and verify files when your installation platform provides that option. These are sensible general PC checks, not guaranteed Squadron 42-specific cures. If the problem remains reproducible, send RSI your exact error, system details, and timing through its support channels or Issue Council.
What RSI’s requirements actually establish
RSI’s requirements article, updated December 17, 2025, says its requirements cover CIG games including Squadron 42. They are thresholds for compatibility, not a promise of a particular frame rate or proof that a crash has a single fix.

| Component | RSI-published requirement | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10, 64-bit, with the latest service pack, or Windows 11 | Confirm that Windows is 64-bit and fully updated. |
| Graphics card | DirectX 11.1 graphics card with 4GB of graphics memory | Check the exact GPU model and dedicated memory rather than relying on a family name. |
| Processor | Quad-core CPU with AVX, AVX2 and FMA3 support | Verify instruction-set support for the installed processor. |
| System memory | At least 16GB RAM | Check installed capacity and whether Windows can use all of it. |
| Storage | 150GB or more on an SSD | Check both the drive type and free capacity. |
RSI currently does not support Linux or macOS for these games. A compatibility layer or virtual machine therefore falls outside the published support target.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStorage has two separate checks
The 150GB SSD requirement is the headline threshold. RSI also recommends an NTFS-formatted drive with at least 100GB free for the RSI Launcher and Star Citizen installation, plus another 10GB of SSD space for the Windows pagefile. That storage guidance refers to the launcher and Star Citizen; it does not provide a separate Squadron 42 installation-size estimate.

Check free space on the same drive that holds the launcher and game files. A drive can be an SSD and still fail in practice if it is nearly full or formatted differently from the recommended NTFS configuration.
Do not combine the numbers into a claim that Squadron 42 itself requires exactly 100GB or exactly 10GB for installation. The published wording describes free-space recommendations for the launcher, Star Citizen installation and pagefile. Treat those figures as capacity planning guidance, then leave additional headroom for Windows, updates and your other applications rather than filling the volume to its limit.
First, identify exactly what is failing
Write down the failure before changing settings. “It crashes” can mean several different events, and each points to a different first check.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall- Launcher failure: the RSI Launcher does not open, closes immediately, or never reaches its sign-in or game-selection screen.
- Launch failure: the launcher works, but the game never reaches its normal start screen.
- In-game crash: the game starts and then closes, freezes, or returns to the desktop during play.
- Stuttering: the game remains open, but motion is uneven, with repeated pauses or inconsistent frame pacing.
Record the exact error text, the point at which it appears, whether the issue happens every time, and what changed immediately beforehand. Useful changes include a Windows update, graphics-driver update, game update, new peripheral, newly installed utility, or a change in storage location. This record gives support staff something more actionable than a general statement that the game is broken.
Build a short symptom timeline
Note the first successful launch you remember, the first failure, and whether the problem is tied to one account, one machine or one location in the game. Record whether the launcher remains responsive, whether audio continues during a visual freeze, and whether Windows itself becomes unstable. These observations help distinguish a launcher problem from an in-game crash or a broader PC fault without assuming a cause.
When testing, use the same sequence each time: start Windows, open the launcher, sign in, start the game and perform the same action or visit the same scene. Change only one variable between attempts. If the result changes, write down exactly which change preceded it. A clean timeline is more valuable than a long list of unrelated tweaks.
Use this low-risk troubleshooting sequence
1. Compare your PC with every published threshold
Use Windows’ built-in diagnostic tools, as RSI recommends, rather than guessing from a computer’s marketing name.

- In File Explorer, open the drive used for the installation, select Properties, and confirm that it is an SSD, uses NTFS, and has enough free space for the installation and pagefile guidance.
A missing requirement does not identify the precise cause of a crash, but it tells you that software tweaks cannot make the machine meet RSI’s published support target. For hardware advice, RSI points users to its Spectrum hardware forum.
Check the processor’s instruction support directly from the model documentation or a reliable system-information report. A “quad-core” label alone is not enough because RSI also specifies AVX, AVX2 and FMA3. Likewise, compare dedicated graphics memory, not shared system memory reported by Windows, with the 4GB graphics-memory threshold.

2. Install current Windows updates
Steam’s general PC launch guidance recommends updating Windows. Open Settings and select Windows Update, install available updates, restart when Windows requests it, and check again until no further update is offered. This is platform-level advice, not a Squadron 42-specific fix documented by RSI.
After restarting, record the Windows update date in your troubleshooting notes. If the failure began immediately after an update, do not assume the update is responsible; simply report the timing to RSI so support can compare it with other reports.

3. Update the graphics driver from the GPU manufacturer
A driver update is a reasonable general check when a game crashes at launch or renders incorrectly. Identify the exact graphics adapter in dxdiag, download the current driver intended for your Windows version from the GPU manufacturer, install it, and restart the PC. Do not assume that a driver for a different adapter or operating-system edition is interchangeable.
Write down the driver version before and after installation. This lets you tell support whether the issue occurs with a specific driver and prevents repeatedly reinstalling the same package without learning anything.
4. Close non-essential software temporarily
Steam’s general guidance also recommends disabling non-essential software to check for conflicts. Before launching, close browsers, recording tools, overlays, hardware-monitoring utilities and other background applications that you do not need for the test. Change one category at a time and note the result so you can identify a conflict instead of permanently disabling software without evidence.
This step is a diagnostic test. It does not establish that any particular overlay or utility is incompatible with Squadron 42. Restore software after the test unless you have evidence that a specific application is involved.
5. Verify files when your installation platform supports it
If your copy is installed through a platform that offers file verification, use that platform’s official process. Steam’s general PC article recommends verifying game files when a game does not run after launch. Verification can replace damaged or incomplete files, but it is relevant only to an installation managed by a platform that provides the feature. Follow the platform’s own menu labels rather than deleting files manually.
Allow the process to finish before launching again, and note whether it reports missing or changed files. A successful verification does not prove that every possible crash is fixed; it only tells you what that platform found in the files it manages.
6. Restart and reproduce the same test
After updates, driver installation or file verification, restart Windows and repeat the exact action that previously failed. Test one change at a time when possible. Note whether the launcher now opens, whether the game reaches the same screen, and whether the crash occurs after the same amount of play. A repeatable before-and-after record makes escalation far more useful.

When the problem is stuttering rather than crashing
Stuttering is an uneven frame-pacing symptom, not a diagnosis. First establish that the game remains running and that the issue is repeated pauses or inconsistent motion rather than a full freeze or crash.
- Confirm that the PC meets the 16GB RAM, supported CPU, 4GB graphics-memory and SSD requirements before changing settings.
- Close non-essential applications and repeat the same in-game route or scene. If the pattern changes, record which background application was closed.
- Check whether the stutter began after a Windows, driver or game update. Include that date and version information in any report.
- Use RSI’s Public Telemetry to view performance context from community machines. Telemetry can show whether similar hardware commonly exhibits a pattern, but it does not prove the cause of an individual PC’s stutter.
Describe the symptom precisely: brief repeated pauses, uneven camera movement, a single long freeze, or a crash after the pause. Also note whether it happens in one scene or everywhere. This keeps a frame-pacing complaint from being filed as a launch failure and gives Issue Council readers a way to compare like with like.
The published material does not establish a Squadron 42-specific graphics setting, cache deletion procedure or guaranteed frame-pacing fix. Avoid presenting a generic tweak as a confirmed remedy.
Deciding whether hardware needs an upgrade
Do not buy new hardware merely because the game crashes. First compare the installed components with RSI’s thresholds and identify the actual shortfall.
RAM
If the computer has less than 16GB of system memory, a compatible RAM upgrade is the clearest hardware category indicated by RSI’s requirements. Check the motherboard’s supported memory type, slot availability, maximum capacity and operating-system limits before purchasing. If the machine already meets 16GB, the requirement alone does not show that more memory will cure a crash or stutter.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check whether all installed memory is recognized in Windows before shopping. If a system has 16GB installed but reports less usable memory, document that discrepancy first; replacing modules without confirming compatibility can create another fault.
SSD
If the game is on a hard disk, on an unsupported format, or on a drive without the required capacity and free space, an internal SSD may address a published storage shortfall. Verify the drive interface, motherboard support, physical space in the case or laptop, and the intended NTFS format before buying. An SSD upgrade is not evidence of a universal crash fix when the existing installation already meets RSI’s storage guidance.
Confirm which volume contains the launcher and game files. Adding an SSD that Windows cannot use for that installation will not solve a space problem on another nearly full drive.
CPU and GPU
RSI identifies minimum processor instruction support and graphics memory, but it does not name a particular brand or model to purchase. Compare your exact CPU and GPU against those requirements and confirm compatibility with the rest of the system before considering replacement. A new component can introduce its own driver, power, thermal or installation problems, so treat it as a response to a measured shortfall rather than a generic troubleshooting step.

Escalate persistent or reproducible problems
If the launcher or game still fails after the basic checks, stop cycling through random tweaks and prepare a clear report. RSI provides several official routes.
Submit a support request
Use RSI’s support area and its Submit a request option. Include:
- Whether the failure is at the launcher, immediately after launch, during play, or a stutter without a crash.
- The exact error message, including punctuation or numeric codes.
- Windows edition and whether it is 64-bit.
- CPU model and confirmation of AVX, AVX2 and FMA3 support.
- GPU model and graphics-memory capacity.
- Installed RAM, SSD type, file-system format and available space.
- Recent Windows, driver, launcher or game changes.
- Whether the problem reproduces every time and which general checks you already tried.
Attach the DXDiag or System Information details RSI describes when the support form allows it, while removing unrelated personal information. Keep the report focused on one reproducible problem, and update the same ticket with new test results instead of opening many identical requests.
Report a reproducible defect to Issue Council
RSI’s Issue Council lets users report problems and upvote existing reports. Search for an existing report that matches your exact symptom before creating a duplicate. Add your reproduction steps, error text and system details, and confirm whether the issue occurs consistently. Upvotes and matching reports help show that multiple users see the same behavior, but they do not guarantee an immediate fix.

Use Public Telemetry for context
RSI describes Public Telemetry as a way to view performance on community machines. Use it to compare broad performance context with similar hardware when investigating stutter. Treat it as context, not as a diagnostic result for your individual installation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting actions to avoid as universal fixes
The available official guidance does not establish broad security exclusions, BIOS changes, registry edits, disabling security protection, or purchasing new hardware as Squadron 42 remedies. Those actions can reduce system security or create new failures, so do not use them as a default checklist.
Likewise, do not claim that a Star Citizen patch note proves a Squadron 42 fix. RSI’s general CIG-game requirements apply to Squadron 42, but a result documented for another title does not automatically transfer.
A compact decision checklist
- Classify the symptom and record the exact error and timing.
- Confirm Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11, supported CPU instructions, a DirectX 11.1 GPU with 4GB memory, at least 16GB RAM and a 150GB-or-larger SSD.
- Check NTFS formatting, available space for the launcher and installation, and the additional pagefile allowance described by RSI.
- Update Windows and the graphics driver, then restart.
- Close non-essential software and repeat the same test.
- Verify files through the official process for your installation platform, if available.
- For stutter, compare similar hardware in Public Telemetry without treating it as proof of cause.
- For a persistent or reproducible failure, submit a detailed RSI support request or matching Issue Council report.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does meeting RSI’s minimum requirements guarantee smooth performance?
No. RSI’s figures are compatibility thresholds for CIG games including Squadron 42, not a promised frame rate or frame-pacing result. A qualifying PC can still experience a game-specific crash or stutter that needs an RSI report.

What if I use Linux or macOS?
RSI currently does not support Linux or macOS for these games. The published support target is Windows 10 64-bit with the latest service pack or Windows 11, so compatibility layers and virtual machines are outside that target.
How much free SSD space should I leave?
RSI recommends an NTFS drive with at least 100GB free for the RSI Launcher and Star Citizen installation, plus another 10GB of SSD space for the Windows pagefile. That wording is not a separate Squadron 42 installation-size estimate.
Should I verify files if I do not use Steam?
Only if the platform managing your installation provides an official verification feature. Steam recommends verification for games that do not run after launch, but that general advice does not establish a Squadron 42-specific procedure for every platform.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Will adding RAM fix a crash?
Not necessarily. An upgrade is relevant when the PC has less than RSI’s 16GB minimum or cannot use its installed memory. If the machine already meets 16GB, the requirement alone does not identify extra RAM as the cause or cure.
What details should I send RSI?
Provide the symptom category, exact error, timing, Windows edition, CPU and instruction support, GPU and graphics memory, RAM, SSD and NTFS details, available space, recent updates, reproducibility and the checks you already performed. DXDiag or System Information can supply core specifications.
Where can I compare stuttering with other PCs?
RSI’s Public Telemetry shows performance context from community machines. Use it for broad comparison with similar hardware, not as proof of what is causing stutter on your individual installation.
Should I disable security software or edit the registry?
No. The official guidance does not establish security exclusions, disabling protection, BIOS changes or registry edits as Squadron 42 fixes. Avoid those high-risk actions as a default checklist.
The Bottom Line
Start with RSI’s published Windows, CPU, GPU, RAM and SSD requirements, then check storage format and free space. Update Windows and the graphics driver, close non-essential software, and verify files only through the official process for your platform. If the same crash, launch failure or stutter remains reproducible, document it with DXDiag or System Information details and send it to RSI Support or Issue Council. These checks narrow the problem; they do not guarantee a Squadron 42-specific cure.
