How to Fix SSIS 0x80004005 Errors: A Complete Troubleshooting Guide

By VGSources Team 11 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SSIS error 0x80004005 is not a single failure with one universal fix. It is commonly reported with the DTS_E_OLEDBERROR symbol, while the provider text may describe a TDS protocol error, communication-link failure, forcibly closed TCP connection, login timeout, delayed login response, timeout 258, invalid cast, or a constraint violation. Copy the exact HRESULT, provider name, and text after Description from the execution log before changing anything. That wording, together with the SQL Server and SSIS versions and whether the package ran interactively or through SQL Server Agent, determines the correct branch.

What SSIS 0x80004005 means

The value usually written by Microsoft documentation is 0x80004005. A title or log that says 0X080004005 may contain an extra zero or a transcription error, so verify the original event, SQL Agent history, SSISDB message, or package log. Do not choose a remedy from the number alone.

In OLE DB failures, SSIS can expose the symbolic error DTS_E_OLEDBERROR. That symbol is a wrapper around a provider-specific failure. Two packages can show the same HRESULT while one has lost its TCP connection and another has received malformed data because a low-memory data flow wrote values incorrectly. The provider description is therefore the diagnostic key.

  • Protocol, communication-link, or forcibly closed connection: investigate the SQL Agent connection manager and network path.
  • Login timeout, delayed login response, or TCP timeout 258: investigate reachability, SQL Server responsiveness, authentication, and server load.
  • Invalid cast, overflow, duplicate-key, or other constraint text on an old SQL Server/SSIS installation: investigate the documented low-memory defect and its updates.
  • Failures only in a job: compare the Agent account, package configuration, protection settings, environment values, logging, and runtime bitness with an interactive run.

Capture the evidence before changing the package

Preserve the complete error chain. The first line may contain only the wrapper; the useful detail often appears in an inner OLE DB or provider message.

  1. Open the execution history in SSISDB, the SQL Server Agent job history, or the package’s configured log provider.
  2. Copy the hexadecimal HRESULT exactly, including capitalization and every digit.
  3. Copy the provider name and all text following Description. Look specifically for phrases such as Protocol error in TDS stream, Communication link failure, An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host, Login timeout expired, Unable to complete login process due to delay in login response, TCP Provider: Timeout error [258], invalid cast specification, or a constraint name.
  4. Record the SQL Server version, SSIS runtime version, OLE DB driver or provider, package deployment model, authentication mode, and whether the run was started manually or by SQL Server Agent.
  5. Note the job-step account, target server and database, connection-manager values, package protection level, environment mapping, and whether the package depends on a native 32-bit provider.
  6. Save the timestamp and compare it with SQL Server, Windows, and network events. A failure that began after a restart, credential change, driver update, or network interruption has a different starting point from a repeatable data-flow error.

These details prevent a common mistake: applying a connection fix to a data-conversion problem, or changing package settings when the server simply did not answer a login request.

Fix protocol, link, and TCP-connection errors in a SQL Server Agent job

Microsoft documents a SQL Server Agent scenario in which an SSIS package reports Protocol error in TDS stream, Communication link failure, or TCP Provider: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host. The documented change is to retain one connection for the package rather than repeatedly opening and closing it during the job.

Change RetainSameConnection in the Agent job step

  1. Open SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) and connect to the instance that owns the SQL Server Agent job.
  2. In Object Explorer, expand SQL Server Agent, then Jobs.
  3. Right-click the failing job and choose Properties.
  4. Select Steps, highlight the SSIS package step, and choose Edit.
  5. Open the step’s Configuration page and select Connection Managers.
  6. Select the connection used when the error occurs. Change RetainSameConnection from False to True.
  7. Save the job, run it once, and capture the complete history rather than relying only on the final success or failure line.

The same property can be changed directly on the package connection manager. If the package is deployed in SSISDB, edit the project or package in its development environment, set the affected connection manager’s property, redeploy according to your normal process, and then retest the job. Change only the connection associated with the provider message; retaining every connection can increase the time a session remains open and is not a substitute for diagnosing an unstable server or network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the surrounding connection path

  • Verify that the SQL Server service is running and accepting connections on the expected instance and endpoint.
  • Check whether the same server, database, and credentials work from the Agent host at the time of the failure.
  • Review firewall, load-balancer, VPN, and intermittent network events for resets or idle-connection termination.
  • Compare an interactive package execution with the Agent execution. A successful interactive run does not prove that the Agent account can resolve the server name, reach the endpoint, or read the same configuration values.
  • After the change, watch for a new provider message. If the wording changes to a login timeout or authentication failure, continue with the corresponding branch instead of repeatedly toggling the property.

Handle login timeouts and delayed login responses

Microsoft records several connection failures under the same HRESULT on SQL Server 2017 systems: Login timeout expired, Unable to complete login process due to delay in login response, and TCP Provider: Timeout error [258]. These messages point toward connectivity or server responsiveness rather than a data-type conversion.

Determine whether the problem is local to SSIS

  1. From the computer that runs the package, test a connection to the same SQL Server instance with SSMS or another approved client, using the same server name, port, and authentication method.
  2. Repeat the test during the time window in which the job normally fails. A connection that succeeds hours later does not rule out a transient saturation or network event.
  3. Ask whether other applications or jobs report login delays at the same time. If they do, prioritize SQL Server availability, resource pressure, endpoint reachability, and network investigation.
  4. If only one package fails, compare its connection string, timeout values, credentials, and Agent environment mapping with a known-working package.

Check server responsiveness and authentication

  • Confirm that the target database is online and that the login has permission to connect to it.
  • Confirm the authentication mode selected by the connection manager. Windows authentication uses the SQL Server Agent service account or proxy context; a SQL login uses the stored package or environment credential.
  • Check for blocking, resource exhaustion, or a restart around the failure time in SQL Server and Windows logs.
  • Ensure that the job is not pointing to a different instance, listener, or environment value than the interactive test.
  • Do not treat increasing a timeout as a repair for a server that is unreachable or refusing connections. A longer wait can mask the cause and delay subsequent job steps.

Investigate legacy low-memory data-flow failures

Microsoft Support documents a historical SQL Server 2005/2008 behavior in which low memory causes the SSIS data-flow engine to spool buffers to disk temporarily. Under that condition, values can become NULL or zero, and later components may report invalid cast, overflow, duplicate-key, or other constraint errors together with 0x80004005. This branch applies to that legacy defect; its memory figures are not current universal SSIS requirements.

Confirm that memory pressure is involved

  1. Check the SQL Server and SSIS versions against the affected legacy installation. Do not apply this explanation to a current runtime solely because the HRESULT matches.
  2. Monitor available memory while the package runs and inspect the SSIS pipeline’s Buffers spooled counter. Spooling during the failure supports the low-memory hypothesis.
  3. Look for a DTS.tmp file and correlate its timestamp with the package failure.
  4. Compare the failing data values with the source. A value that is unexpectedly NULL or zero before a cast, key insert, or constraint check is consistent with this documented behavior.

The legacy article says the minimum available memory that can trigger the issue generally falls between 32 MB and 64 MB of available memory. It also describes a default low-memory notification of approximately 32 MB per 4 GB, up to 64 MB per 4 GB. Those thresholds belong to the historical SQL Server 2005/2008 defect and should not be used as capacity targets for modern systems.

Apply the documented remediation

  • Install the cumulative update applicable to the installed SQL Server version and service pack, following your organization’s testing and change-control process.
  • Add physical memory when the host is genuinely constrained.
  • Move SSIS execution to a host with sufficient memory if the database server and ETL workloads compete for the same resources.
  • Lower SQL Server’s maximum memory setting when SQL Server is consuming memory needed by the SSIS runtime, but calculate and validate the setting for the host’s other services.
  • Stop or reschedule competing workloads during the package window.
  • After remediation, rerun the package and verify source values, buffer-spooling behavior, and the downstream cast or constraint operation.

Check SQL Server Agent job configuration and runtime differences

A package can succeed in a designer or an interactive execution and fail as a job because Agent supplies a different identity, configuration, working directory, environment, or runtime architecture.

Authentication and package protection

  • Confirm that the job step uses the intended credential or proxy and that the account can reach every server, file share, and database used by the package.
  • Re-enter the package password where the deployment model requires it. An encrypted connection or sensitive property may not decrypt under the Agent account if the protection level and execution identity do not match.
  • Check whether a SQL login, Windows login, or environment variable supplies the connection credentials. A value visible in an interactive session may not exist in the Agent environment.

Environment and connection-manager values

  • Inspect SSISDB environment references and parameter mappings, including server names, database names, ports, and file paths.
  • Verify that the job points to the intended catalog folder, project, package, and version.
  • Open each connection manager used by the failing task and compare its resolved value with the interactive run. Pay particular attention to expressions that overwrite design-time values.

32-bit versus 64-bit execution

Some native OLE DB providers are available only in 32-bit form or behave differently between architectures. If the package depends on such a provider, determine whether the Agent step must run the 32-bit runtime. A bitness mismatch can produce a provider-load or connection failure that is wrapped by the same general OLE DB error family. Change the runtime option only after identifying the provider architecture, then retest all connections and data-flow components.

Logging and diagnostic dumps

Increase logging for the failing run rather than guessing. SQL Server Agent supports Basic, Performance, and Verbose logging levels. SSISDB or package logging can expose the task, connection, and provider message that occurred immediately before the wrapper. Where appropriate, enable dump-on-error; it can create .mdmp and .tmp diagnostic files for analysis. Store those files securely because they may contain operational details, and disable unusually verbose diagnostics after collecting the evidence your support process needs.

The table is a triage aid, not a substitute for the exact provider text. If a new run produces a different description, move to that branch rather than continuing with the previous one.

Verify the repair without creating a false success

  1. Run the package in the same context that originally failed: the same Agent job, step, account, environment, and runtime architecture.
  2. Capture the full history at a useful logging level and confirm that the provider description, not merely the wrapper, is gone.
  3. Validate row counts, rejected rows, key constraints, and representative converted values. A package can finish while silently receiving NULL or zero values in a legacy low-memory scenario.
  4. Repeat the run during the normal schedule window if the original problem was intermittent.
  5. Record the changed property, update, memory adjustment, credential correction, or runtime setting in the job’s change history.
  6. If the failure persists, restore the last known-good setting where safe and escalate with the HRESULT, provider text, versions, execution context, logs, and any dump files. Those artifacts let a database or SSIS administrator distinguish a provider defect from a network, server, or package-design problem.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Searching only for the number: the HRESULT is shared by materially different provider failures.
  • Assuming a manual success proves the job is healthy: Agent may use another account, environment, password, endpoint, or runtime bitness.
  • Applying the legacy memory thresholds to a current system: the 32–64 MB figures describe a documented SQL Server 2005/2008 defect, not modern SSIS sizing.
  • Changing every connection manager: target the connection named in the provider message and keep the change explainable.
  • Increasing timeouts without testing reachability: a longer timeout cannot repair a stopped service, blocked endpoint, invalid credential, or broken route.
  • Stopping after the job reports success: verify data quality and downstream constraints, especially after memory-related failures.

When to escalate

Escalate to the SQL Server or SSIS administrator when the same provider message returns after the documented connection change, when multiple applications experience login delays, when a legacy update cannot be applied, or when dump files indicate a runtime or provider defect. Include the exact code as printed, the provider description, SQL Server and SSIS versions, driver name and bitness, deployment model, authentication and protection settings, Agent history, SSISDB or package logs, memory counters, and the result of a manual-versus-Agent comparison. Avoid sending passwords or connection strings containing secrets.
