How to Fix Star Fox Split-Screen Problems on Nintendo Switch 2, Including Players Who Can’t Join

By VGSources Team 10 min read

If Star Fox players cannot join a split-screen match, first confirm that you are playing the Nintendo Switch 2 version and identify the mode: Local Battle, local Campaign or Challenge co-op, online Battle Mode, online GameShare, or local GameShare. These modes use different menus, controller flows, and invitation systems. The steps below follow Nintendo’s documented setup for Star Fox on Nintendo Switch 2. Older releases, including Star Fox 64 3D on Nintendo 3DS, use different multiplayer systems and should not be troubleshot with these instructions.

Start by identifying the game, console, and multiplayer mode

“Star Fox split-screen” can describe several different features. On Nintendo Switch 2, Local Battle puts multiple players on one console and can support up to four players. Local Campaign or Challenge co-op uses two roles on the same session: one player pilots and the other operates the gun. Online Battle Mode uses an invitation, while GameShare has separate online and local joining procedures.

Check the title shown on your HOME Menu before changing settings. The instructions in Nintendo’s multiplayer support guide and the current Star Fox product information apply to Star Fox on Nintendo Switch 2. The Star Fox 64 3D instruction booklet is for the Nintendo 3DS release, published by Nintendo in 2012; its wireless multiplayer instructions are not a guide to Switch 2 split-screen or GameShare.

What you are trying to do Where players connect What the joining player does
Local Battle One Nintendo Switch 2 system, split screen Pair a controller when prompted, then choose a pilot
Local Campaign or Challenge co-op One local session Pair a second controller; the second player becomes gunner
Online Battle Mode Separate systems over the internet Accept the invitation or retrieve it from the profile’s Invites list
Online GameShare co-op Separate systems through a GameChat room Open the C Menu, view GameShare invitations, and join

Fix Local Battle split-screen on one Nintendo Switch 2

Local Battle is the mode to use when everyone is playing on a single console and you want separate ships or pilots on the split screen. Nintendo’s flow asks the host to specify how many people will use that system before controllers are paired.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch™ 2 Pro Controller

  1. Launch Star Fox and open Battle Mode from the main menu.
  2. Choose Local Battle.
  3. Set the number of players who will use that Nintendo Switch 2. Select the full number of people who should participate before moving on.
  4. When the game prompts for controllers, have each player pair a controller. Do not continue until every intended player is shown as ready.
  5. Let each player choose a pilot.
  6. Select the mission to begin the battle.

A player who cannot join is often stopped at one of those checkpoints: the host may have entered a different Battle Mode option, selected too few players, or advanced before the extra controller was paired. This is a practical reading of Nintendo’s documented sequence, not a claim that one fault explains every failed join.

When Local Battle or split-screen is not listed

Nintendo says Local Split-Screen Battle Mode is provided in a free game update. If the option is missing, update the software before troubleshooting controllers.

  1. On the HOME Menu, highlight Star Fox without starting it.
  2. Press the + or − button on the controller.
  3. Choose Software Update.
  4. Select Via the Internet and allow the update to finish.
  5. Start the game again and check Battle Mode for Local Battle.

If the update has not completed, the old game build can continue to show a menu without the local split-screen feature. The update adds the mode; it does not alter the separate invitation steps used by online play.

When the second local player still cannot enter

  • Return to the main menu and confirm that the host selected Battle Mode → Local Battle, rather than Campaign, Challenge, online Battle, or GameShare.
  • Check the player count selected on the console. A controller paired after the host chose a smaller number of players will not automatically create another slot.
  • Repeat the controller-pairing prompt for every participant and wait for all ready indicators before proceeding.
  • Have each participant choose a pilot after pairing. A controller that is paired but has not completed pilot selection may not appear as an active player.
  • If the mode itself disappeared after a system or game change, repeat the software-update path above before trying a different multiplayer mode.

Local Battle is the only flow in this guide that explicitly asks for the number of players using one system. Do not use online invitation instructions to solve a controller-pairing problem on that console.

Set up local Campaign or Challenge co-op

Campaign and Challenge co-op are not a two-ship version of Local Battle. The game assigns complementary jobs: one person pilots and the other guns. If the second participant expects an independent fighter or a conventional split-screen race, the session can look broken even when it is working as designed.

  1. From the game’s main menu, open Campaign or Challenge Mode.
  2. Select Co-op: Local.
  3. Follow the on-screen controller-pairing prompt for the second player.
  4. Start the selected mission. The first player pilots and the second player operates the gun.

Use this route only for a shared campaign or challenge session on the local setup. To compete against other pilots, return to Battle Mode and choose the Local Battle path instead.

Fix an online Battle Mode player who cannot join

Online Battle Mode does not use the local split-screen controller screen. The host sends an invitation from inside Battle Mode, and the friend accepts it from the notification or from the Nintendo Switch 2 profile menu.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Host: send the invitation before starting the game

  1. Open Battle Mode.
  2. Choose Online Battle.
  3. Select Invite Friends.
  4. Choose the friend to invite and wait for that player to join.
  5. Only after the invited player has joined should the host start matchmaking or a private game.

Guest: accept a visible invitation

  1. Open the invitation notification when it appears.
  2. Select Join.
  3. Wait for the host’s session to finish loading before attempting to enter a match.

Guest: recover a missed notification

A dismissed or missed pop-up does not necessarily mean that the invitation is gone. Nintendo’s instructions provide a profile-menu route:

  • This set includes both a left and right Joy-Con 2 controller (along with a pair of Joy-Con 2 straps)—perfect for local multiplayer with a friend in compatible games.
  • Includes two Joy-Con 2 straps.
  • Only for use with the Nintendo Switch 2 system.
  1. Open the HOME Menu.
  2. Select the user profile that received the invitation.
  3. Open Invites.
  4. Choose the Online Play Invite.
  5. Select Join.

Make sure the host has invited the correct Nintendo Account user. An invitation sent to another profile on the same console will not appear in the profile you are checking.

Check the requirements for online features

Nintendo states that online features require internet access, a Nintendo Account, and a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Availability and terms can vary by region. These are prerequisites, not a diagnosis for every connection failure: meeting them does not prove why a particular invitation failed, but missing one prevents the documented online flow from working.

  • Confirm that the host and guest are connected to the internet.
  • Use the Nintendo Account profile that was invited.
  • Check that the relevant account has Nintendo Switch Online access where required.
  • Verify regional availability and any account or service terms that apply to online play.
  • If the notification was missed, use HOME Menu → user profile → Invites rather than waiting for it to reappear.

Join Campaign or Challenge through online GameShare

GameShare co-op is a different online route from an ordinary Online Battle invitation. Nintendo’s documented process begins in a GameChat room. The host chooses GameShare from Campaign or Challenge, and the guest accepts through the C Menu.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Host procedure

  1. Have the players join a GameChat room.
  2. Open Campaign or Challenge Mode.
  3. Select Co-op: GameShare.
  4. Choose the player to invite.
  5. Wait for that player to join GameShare before continuing.

Guest procedure

  1. Open the C Menu while in the GameChat session.
  2. Select See Invites to GameShare.
  3. Choose Join GameShare.
  4. Wait for the host’s session to complete the join process.

Once connected, the host is the pilot and the guest is the gunner, matching the role arrangement in local Campaign or Challenge co-op. If the guest looks for an independent ship or checks the ordinary Online Play Invite list, they are using the wrong join path for this mode.

GameChat video is optional to the multiplayer role flow. A compatible USB camera is needed for GameChat video features, but Nintendo does not identify a camera as a remedy for a player who cannot join GameShare.

Join a local GameShare Battle session from another nearby system

Local GameShare is not the same as Local Battle on one console. It uses nearby Nintendo Switch 2 systems: the host advertises a GameShare session, and another player discovers it from the HOME Menu.

Host procedure

  1. Open Battle Mode.
  2. Highlight GameShare.
  3. Set GameShare to Local.
  4. Remain in the session while the other players search and join.

Joining procedure

  1. On the joining Nintendo Switch 2, select the GameShare icon on the HOME Menu.
  2. Choose Join GameShare.
  3. Select A Local User.
  4. Choose the host user.
  5. Join the nearby session found by the console.

Do not expect this session to appear under ordinary online invitations. It is discovered through the GameShare icon and the local-user choice. Conversely, a player sitting beside the host but trying to enter Local Battle on a second console will not be using the one-system split-screen flow.

Controllers and accessories: what can and cannot help

For multiple players on one Nintendo Switch 2, each participant needs a compatible controller that can be paired when the game asks. Nintendo specifically identifies the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con 2 as a compatible controller option for local multiplayer setup. Adding another controller can supply a missing local input, but it cannot repair an online invitation, GameChat join, or GameShare discovery problem.

A USB camera is relevant only if you want GameChat video. It is not required to accept a GameShare invitation and is not a general fix for split-screen or joining failures.

What to record when the documented flow fails

Nintendo’s support material documents the setup paths but does not assign one fault-specific cause to every player who cannot join. When the exact instructions above fail, record the conditions instead of applying a fix from the wrong mode.

  • The exact Star Fox release and console, including whether it is Nintendo Switch 2 or the Nintendo 3DS Star Fox 64 3D release.
  • The multiplayer mode: Local Battle, local Campaign or Challenge co-op, online Battle, online GameShare, or local GameShare.
  • Which person is host and which person is guest.
  • Whether the game displays the relevant mode and whether the latest available software update was installed.
  • The last completed step: player-count selection, controller pairing, pilot selection, invitation acceptance, C Menu discovery, or local-user discovery.
  • The exact error message or whether the invitation, player slot, or nearby session never appeared.
  • For online play, whether both users have internet access, Nintendo Accounts, and the required Nintendo Switch Online membership for their region.

These details separate a missing Local Battle update from a controller-stage issue, an ordinary online invitation from GameShare, and a same-console session from a nearby-system session. They also give Nintendo support a reproducible point at which joining stops, rather than treating every report as the same split-screen fault.

Bottom line for each Star Fox multiplayer problem

  • For one-console split screen, update the game if Local Battle is missing, then choose Local Battle, set the player count, pair every controller, select pilots, and choose the mission.
  • For local Campaign or Challenge, choose Co-op: Local and expect pilot and gunner roles rather than two independent ships.
  • For online Battle, use Battle Mode → Online Battle → Invite Friends; a guest who missed the notification can retrieve it from the user profile’s Invites list.
  • For online GameShare co-op, join GameChat first, then use the C Menu’s See Invites to GameShare and Join GameShare commands.
  • For local GameShare between nearby systems, the host selects Battle Mode → GameShare → Local and the guest joins through the HOME Menu’s GameShare icon and A Local User.
