If Windows 10 shows “This device cannot start (Code 10) – STATUS_DEVICE_POWER_FAILURE” for a Bluetooth adapter, the operating system failed to initialize the radio. Start by identifying the exact adapter, then perform a clean driver installation from the computer maker or Intel, check Bluetooth services and power settings, and only then try update rollback, firmware work, or a network reset. Code 10 is a device-start failure, not proof that the Bluetooth hardware is permanently dead.
What the Windows 10 Bluetooth Code 10 message means
Open Device Manager and you may see a yellow warning icon beside an entry such as Intel Wireless Bluetooth. The device status can read “This Device Cannot Start (Code 10) – STATUS_DEVICE_POWER_FAILURE.” Windows has detected the Bluetooth hardware but cannot bring it into an operational power state. Until initialization succeeds, controllers, headsets, keyboards, mice and other Bluetooth accessories will not pair or reconnect.

The message does not by itself identify a failed module. A mismatched or damaged driver is the first software cause to eliminate. Windows may also be prevented from starting the adapter by a power-management setting, a stopped Bluetooth service, a recent Windows feature update, or firmware that does not initialize the radio correctly. If a clean installation and the other software checks fail, the module itself may have failed and needs manufacturer service or replacement.
Before changing anything
Confirm that the problem is the adapter
- Press Windows key + X, choose Device Manager, and expand Bluetooth.
- Open the adapter’s Properties, select the General tab, and read the status text and code.
- Record the full adapter name, the Driver tab’s provider, date and version, and the Details tab’s Hardware Ids values. These details distinguish an Intel radio from an OEM-specific device and help you choose the correct package.
Do not install a generic package simply because its name contains “Bluetooth.” Use the support page for your exact computer model. Laptop makers can customize Intel hardware, and the package supplied for one model may not match another. If the adapter is Intel-branded, Intel’s current package or Intel Driver & Support Assistant is an appropriate source, while the PC manufacturer’s package remains the first choice when the maker provides one.

Fixes in the safest order
1. Perform a clean Bluetooth driver installation
A clean installation removes the existing device registration and driver package before Windows loads the replacement. It is the most important software step because Code 10 commonly follows a mismatched or corrupted driver.
- On another device if necessary, open the support site for your computer’s exact model. Download the Windows 10 Bluetooth package. For an Intel adapter, obtain the current Intel Wireless Bluetooth package or use Intel Driver & Support Assistant. Save the installer locally; do not run a driver-updater download from an unverified site.
- Close pairing windows and programs that use Bluetooth. Keep the downloaded installer available after the device is removed.
- In Device Manager, expand Bluetooth, right-click the affected adapter, and choose Uninstall device.
- When Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device or Delete the driver software for this device, select that option. If the checkbox is absent, continue with the uninstall; the downloaded OEM package will supply the replacement.
- Restart Windows. A restart allows the old device instance and its power state to be cleared before the new package is installed.
- Run the downloaded installer as an administrator if Windows requests elevation. Complete the installation and restart again if the package asks you to.
- Return to Device Manager and open the adapter’s properties. Confirm that the warning icon and Code 10 status have gone. Test with a known-working Bluetooth accessory.
If the installer says that the package is not compatible, stop rather than forcing it. Recheck the model number, Windows 10 architecture and hardware IDs, then obtain the package listed for that computer. A generic driver that installs successfully but leaves Code 10 is not evidence that the radio is defective.
2. Make sure Bluetooth services are running
Driver initialization can fail when the Windows Bluetooth service stack is stopped or disabled. This check is reversible and does not remove paired devices.

- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. Approve the administrator prompt. - Find Bluetooth Support Service. Open it and set Startup type to a normal enabled setting used by your system, then select Start if its status is stopped.
- Review the other Bluetooth-named services shown on your installation. Start any service that is stopped but required for Bluetooth operation, and apply the change.
- Restart Windows and check Device Manager again.
Service changes cannot repair a missing or physically failed radio. They are useful when the adapter appears normally but Windows cannot complete the software side of startup.
3. Prevent Windows from powering the adapter off
Windows can shut down a Bluetooth adapter to save power. On some systems the adapter does not resume correctly, producing a power-failure Code 10. Disable this behavior for testing.
- In Device Manager, right-click the Bluetooth adapter and choose Properties.
- Open the Power Management tab.
- Clear Allow the computer to turn off the device to save power, then click OK.
- Restart Windows and test Bluetooth.
For an additional power-plan test, open Control Panel, choose Hardware and Sound, then Power Options. Select Change plan settings, choose Change advanced power settings, expand Wireless Adapter Settings, and set the available mode to Maximum Performance. Apply the setting, reboot and retest. If it makes no difference, you can return the plan to its previous setting.

4. Roll back a recent Windows feature update
If Bluetooth stopped immediately after a Windows feature update, test whether the timing is causal. Rollback is available only while Windows still offers the earlier-build recovery option.
- Open Settings and select Update & Security.
- Choose Recovery.
- Under Go back to an earlier build, select Get started if the option is present and follow the prompts.
- After Windows returns to the previous build, open Device Manager and test the adapter before installing additional changes.
Do not use rollback merely because the error is inconvenient; use it when the failure began after the update and the recovery option is available. If the option is missing, continue with the driver, service and firmware checks instead of attempting an unsupported downgrade.
5. Update the computer’s BIOS or firmware
Bluetooth power initialization can depend on firmware supplied by the computer maker. A BIOS update has resolved related Code 10 symptoms in at least one Dell community case, but the correct file and procedure are model-specific.

- Open the support page for the exact computer model you recorded earlier.
- Read the BIOS or firmware release notes and installation instructions. Confirm that the update applies to your model and Windows 10 configuration.
- Connect AC power, close running applications and follow the manufacturer’s update procedure exactly. Do not interrupt power during the firmware flash.
- After the system restarts, check Device Manager and test Bluetooth.
Never use a BIOS file for a similar-looking model. If the manufacturer does not publish an update for your computer, skip this step rather than substituting firmware from another system.
6. Use Windows Network reset as a later recovery step
Intel lists Network reset as a recovery action after driver and other troubleshooting. It should not replace installation of the correct Bluetooth driver.
- Open Settings.
- Select Network & Internet, then Status.
- Choose Network reset and select Reset now.
- Allow Windows to restart completely. Do not test while the reset is still in progress.
- After the restart, check Device Manager and try pairing the accessory again.
Because this is a broad networking recovery action, use it after the targeted Bluetooth driver, service and power checks. If the Code 10 status remains unchanged, return to the adapter’s properties rather than repeatedly running Network reset.

When the adapter may have failed
If you have installed the correct OEM or Intel package cleanly, restarted, verified Bluetooth services, disabled adapter power shutoff, checked update timing, and applied applicable firmware, persistent Code 10 becomes evidence that the module itself may be failing. Intel support describes this possibility after a clean driver installation and recommends manufacturer assistance or replacement options.
Contact the computer maker with the model, adapter name, hardware IDs, driver version and the exact status text. Ask whether the internal Bluetooth module is replaceable and whether the system has a documented diagnostic test. On systems that support it, a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter for Windows 10 is a practical replacement query. Choose one that explicitly supports Windows 10 and matches the ports available on the computer. A USB adapter bypasses the internal radio; it does not repair that internal module.

Use the least invasive action that matches the evidence: service and power changes first, then a clean driver, followed by update or firmware work when timing or manufacturer guidance supports it. Replacement is reasonable only after the software path has been exhausted.

Common mistakes that keep Code 10 in place
- Installing a driver for the wrong computer. Similar model names can use different radios. Verify the model and hardware IDs before downloading.
- Skipping the removal step. Installing a new package over a damaged device instance can leave the same Code 10 state. Uninstall the adapter and remove its driver when Windows offers that checkbox.
- Using a generic driver site. The OEM or Intel package is the authoritative source for this hardware; third-party bundles can be mismatched.
- Assuming Code 10 proves permanent death. The status means Windows could not start the device. It does not distinguish a recoverable driver or power problem from a failed module.
- Running Network reset first. Reset is a later recovery step, not a substitute for the correct Bluetooth package.
- Flashing unrelated firmware. BIOS files are model-specific. A similar chassis or motherboard name is not enough.
- Testing only one accessory. After the adapter starts, test with a known-working device. A single failed headset or controller can create a pairing problem unrelated to Code 10.
Short decision checklist
- Does Device Manager show Code 10 and
STATUS_DEVICE_POWER_FAILURE? Record the adapter and hardware IDs. - Did you install the exact OEM or Intel Bluetooth package after uninstalling the existing device? If not, do that first.
- Are Bluetooth Support Service and the other required Bluetooth services running?
- Is Allow the computer to turn off the device to save power cleared?
- Did the failure begin after a feature update? If rollback is offered, test it.
- Does the PC maker provide applicable BIOS or firmware? Follow only that model’s instructions.
- After those checks, did Network reset and a full restart change the status?
- If Code 10 persists, ask the manufacturer about a failed module, repair, or a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter for Windows 10.
