How to Fix STATUS_WAIT_2 (0x80070002) in Windows

STATUS_WAIT_2 (0x80070002) means Windows could not find a file or folder required by the operation. The code is Microsoft’s ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND; it does not identify one universal failure. The correct fix depends on whether Windows Backup skipped a named path or Windows 8.1 System Image Recovery failed while restoring an image.

Start by identifying the exact workflow and the path or volume involved. For a backup that names a Pictures folder or another user location, restore the path or update the backup selection. Use the DiskPart-and-format procedure only for the documented Windows 8.1 same-disk System Image Recovery scenario, because formatting destroys data on the selected volume.

What STATUS_WAIT_2 (0x80070002) means

Microsoft’s Windows error table defines 0x80070002 as ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND: “The system cannot find the file specified.” Microsoft Q&A describes the same value as STATUS_WAIT_2 and notes that it almost always represents a missing file or path.

In backup and recovery work, Windows may be following an index that still points to a file, folder, or volume that has been moved, deleted, disconnected, or dismounted. The hexadecimal value therefore tells you what Windows could not locate, not why it disappeared. A backup skip, an image-restore failure, and an update-related message can all display the same code but require different remedies.

System Image Recovery on Windows 8.1 cannot find a file A documented same-physical-disk image-partition condition can prematurely dismount the image. Confirm the Windows version, disk layout, and image location before using the documented recovery workaround. Do not apply the formatting procedure to a different version or an unconfirmed volume.
An update or another Windows component reports 0x80070002 The code still means a required file or path was not found, but the backup-specific causes may not apply. Record the operation, exact message, and any named path or drive before choosing a fix. Do not assume the Windows 8.1 image-recovery workaround is appropriate.

The sections below keep these cases separate. That separation is important: the same error value does not make the same command safe in every context.

Fix 0x80070002 when Windows Backup skips a file or folder

1. Read the skipped-item entry exactly

Open the backup report or status screen and note the complete path Windows names. A message referring to a Pictures folder is materially different from one referring to a disconnected drive or a system-image volume. Preserve the drive letter and every folder name; a similarly named folder elsewhere is not the same source.

2. Check whether the source path still exists

  1. Open File Explorer and browse to the drive and folders shown in the report.
  2. Confirm that the final folder or file is present and accessible.
  3. If the path is on removable storage or a network location, reconnect that storage or make the location available before testing the backup again.
  4. Check whether the item was deliberately renamed, moved, or deleted since the backup job was created.

If the path no longer exists because you moved or deleted it, the error is consistent with a stale backup selection. There is no missing system file to restore in that case; the job is simply still asking for the old location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Correct the backup source

Use the backup program’s configuration to remove the obsolete path and add the item’s current location, if you still want it included. If the folder was intentionally deleted, leave it out of the selection. If you restored the folder to its original location, verify that the complete path now matches the one in the report.

Do not create an empty folder merely to make the path exist unless that is genuinely the folder you intend to back up. An empty replacement can hide the stale-selection problem while omitting the files you actually need.

4. Run the backup again and inspect the result

Start a new backup after correcting the selection or reconnecting the source. Review the resulting report rather than assuming that a completed-looking progress bar means every item was captured. If another path is skipped, troubleshoot that path separately; each missing source can have its own cause.

5. Check the destination without confusing it with the source

A separate external USB hard drive is a relevant destination category for Windows backup because it keeps the backup on a different physical device from the system disk. The evidence for this error does not establish a particular brand, capacity, price, or guaranteed result, and buying a drive does not correct a stale source path. Use a destination that Windows can currently see, then confirm that the backup job is pointed at that destination.

Fix the documented Windows 8.1 System Image Recovery case

Microsoft documents a narrower failure involving Windows 8.1: the system image is stored on a partition on the same physical disk as drive C, and that image partition is much smaller than drive C. During restoration, the image can be prematurely dismounted. Recovery then reports that the system cannot find the file specified and shows 0x80070002.

This is not a general explanation for every System Image Recovery error. Verify all of the following before using the destructive workaround:

  • The computer is running Windows 8.1.
  • You are using System Image Recovery, not an ordinary file backup.
  • The image is stored on a partition on the same physical disk as the C: operating-system volume.
  • The image partition is substantially smaller than the C: partition.
  • The recovery environment identifies an affected volume as RAW or otherwise unusable for the restore.

If those conditions do not match, stop before formatting. The drive letters and volume numbers shown in recovery can differ from those seen in normal Windows.

Prepare before opening DiskPart

  • Confirm which disk contains the Windows installation and which disk or partition contains the image.
  • Make sure you have an appropriate recovery plan for any data on the affected volume. Formatting removes the volume’s existing contents.
  • Disconnect unrelated storage only if doing so is consistent with your recovery plan; the goal is to reduce the chance of selecting the wrong volume, not to guess at drive assignments.
  • Write down the volume sizes and labels shown by the recovery environment before selecting anything.

Open the recovery Command Prompt

  1. Start the Windows recovery environment.
  2. Select Advanced options.
  3. Choose Troubleshoot.
  4. Choose Advanced options again.
  5. Select Command Prompt.

These labels are the documented path for the Windows 8.1 recovery workflow. If your screen uses different wording or you are on another Windows release, do not infer that the same formatting steps are supported.

Use DiskPart to identify the correct volume

  1. At Command Prompt, enter diskpart and press Enter.
  2. Enter list volume to display the volumes visible to recovery.
  3. Compare each volume’s size, file system, label, and status with the layout you confirmed earlier.
  4. Select only the confirmed affected volume. For example, if the listing shows that the affected volume is volume 3, enter select volume 3. Replace 3 with the number actually displayed for your confirmed volume.
  5. Recheck the DiskPart response. A selection message confirms only the number you typed; it does not prove that you chose the correct partition.

Recovery can assign different drive letters than normal Windows, so do not select a volume solely because it is labeled C:. Use the physical-disk relationship, size, file-system state, and label together.

Format the confirmed RAW volume as NTFS

Only after confirming the volume and accepting the data loss, format that affected RAW volume as NTFS from DiskPart. The command sequence is:

format fs=ntfs

DiskPart will ask for confirmation and may take time to complete. Formatting the wrong volume can erase the operating system, the image, or personal files. If the displayed volume does not match your notes, stop and reassess instead of continuing.

Exit DiskPart and rerun System Image Recovery

  1. When formatting finishes, enter exit to leave DiskPart.
  2. Close Command Prompt.
  3. Return to the recovery menu and choose System Image Recovery.
  4. Follow the re-image wizard, selecting the correct system image and destination when prompted.
  5. Allow the wizard to complete, then verify that the restored Windows installation starts and that the expected data is present.

The documented workaround is aimed at the premature-dismount condition described above. It is not a universal repair for missing backup files, damaged images, wrong drive selections, or other Windows versions.

Why the two fixes must not be mixed

A skipped Pictures folder is a source-path problem: Windows is looking for a user folder that no longer exists at the recorded location. Formatting a volume cannot restore that path and may destroy unrelated data. Conversely, the Windows 8.1 image-recovery case concerns how a same-disk image partition is mounted during restoration; changing a backup selection will not repair that volume state.

Use this decision sequence:

  1. Identify whether the message appeared during file backup, system-image restoration, an update, or another task.
  2. Record the exact path, drive, volume, Windows edition, and wording shown.
  3. For a named user path, verify existence and correct the source selection.
  4. For the documented Windows 8.1 same-disk image layout, verify the volume before considering DiskPart.
  5. If the operation is different or the conditions are uncertain, do not format; investigate that workflow’s own source and destination references.

Common mistakes and safer recovery choices

Formatting because the code looks serious

The hexadecimal value alone is not evidence that a partition must be formatted. Formatting belongs only to the confirmed Windows 8.1 System Image Recovery scenario and an appropriate recovery plan.

Assuming a drive letter is permanent

Recovery environments can assign letters differently. A volume that appears as C: during normal Windows may have another letter at Command Prompt. Identify it by size, label, file-system state, and physical-disk placement.

Testing only the backup destination

A destination can be available while the source path is missing. When a report names a user folder, check that source first. A separate external USB hard drive can be a sensible destination category, but it does not make an obsolete source path valid.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repeating the same backup without changing its selection

If the report points to a moved or deleted folder, rerunning the unchanged job generally asks Windows to find the same missing path again. Correct the selection or restore the path before retrying.

Applying an 8.1 workaround to another Windows version

The documented image-partition failure is specifically described for Windows 8.1. Do not treat it as proof that a Windows 10 or Windows 11 recovery volume should be formatted.

When the error remains

Record the operation, Windows version, full error text, named path, image location, disk layout, and the volume information shown by recovery. Those details distinguish a stale source index from a dismounted image partition and from an unrelated failure that happens to use the same code. Recheck that the selected image and destination are the intended ones, and avoid additional DiskPart changes until the failing volume is positively identified.
