Reserve SteamOS beta testing, rollback, reset, or re-imaging for problems that affect the system more broadly—not for a single troublesome game.
The same sequence applies to both LCD and OLED Steam Deck models. Menus, Proton releases, game updates, and compatibility assessments can change, so treat the labels and options currently shown on your Deck as authoritative.

First identify which failure you have. A game that never gets past “Preparing to Launch” needs a different test from one that reaches its menu but stutters in a demanding scene. Likewise, a problem that occurs only on a television or monitor points toward the docked-display branch, while several unrelated games failing after one SteamOS update suggests a system-level issue. Keeping that scope in mind prevents an unnecessary reset.

Valve’s first-line guidance for instability is to install available software updates, restart the Deck, and temporarily disable third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode. These steps clear transient state without changing a game’s files or your personal data.

- Open Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates.
- Install any available SteamOS update and allow the Deck to finish rebooting if prompted.
- Restart manually with Steam > Power > Restart.
- If you installed utilities, overlays, launchers, plugins, or other third-party software from Desktop Mode, exit or disable them temporarily.
- Launch the affected game again before re-enabling those applications one at a time.
Keeping a third-party application disabled during this test matters: if the game starts normally, you have isolated an interaction rather than proved that the game itself is broken. Valve’s Steam Deck Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide is the reference for these general stability steps.
Do not skip the restart after an update. A game can continue using processes or compatibility components from the previous session until SteamOS has restarted. If the issue returns only after a particular utility is enabled, leave that utility off while you check for an updated version or ask its developer for help.
2. Read the game’s Deck Verified assessment
Valve describes the program this way: “The Deck Verified system has four categories that indicate how well games will work on Steam Deck.” The categories are Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown.
Open the game’s Steam Store page and find its Steam Deck Compatibility section. For Playable or Unsupported titles, the page identifies which Verified requirements are not met. Those notes can point to a required keyboard, small text, an external launcher, a control issue, or another limitation before you change settings.
A Verified badge is a compatibility assessment, not a permanent guarantee. A later game update, launcher change, shader cache, save state, or configuration can still prevent a particular installation from launching or running well. Conversely, an Unsupported or Unknown label does not explain every possible failure; it tells you to expect limitations and to use more caution when troubleshooting.
Use the notes as a checklist rather than as a pass-or-fail verdict. If the page mentions an external launcher, allow time for that launcher to complete its own update and sign-in process. If it identifies small text or a control limitation, the title may technically run while still being inconvenient. Those details explain why a game can carry a Playable badge even when your hardware is functioning normally.
3. Choose between the native Linux build and Proton
Steam games may offer a native Linux version or run the Windows build through Valve’s Steam Play compatibility layer, Proton. Use the path that best matches the game’s current Deck notes and your symptoms.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Compatibility path | When to try it | What to watch for | What success means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native Linux version | The title supplies a Linux build and its Deck guidance favors it. | The native build can have its own update, launcher, controller, or performance issues. | The game launches and remains stable with the installed Linux files. |
| Windows build through Proton | The Linux build fails, the game is commonly run through Proton, or the Store page’s Deck notes indicate that route. | If only Linux files are installed, forcing Proton can make Steam download the Windows version. | The selected compatibility tool starts the game reliably on your Deck. |
Do not assume that a specific Proton release fixes a specific game unless current, game-specific evidence says so. Proton behavior can change with a game patch, driver update, or a new compatibility-tool release.

Test one compatibility path at a time and note which one was active when the result changed. Switching repeatedly while a download or shader-processing step is still running can make the outcome difficult to interpret. If the native build works but has a particular limitation, record that trade-off instead of treating Proton as automatically superior.
Force a Proton version for one game
- In Gaming Mode, highlight the affected game in your Library.
- Press the Menu button.
- Open Properties > Compatibility.
- Enable the option to force the use of a Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Select the latest Proton version offered on your Deck and close Properties.
- Start the game and allow Steam to download any required files.
Forcing Proton is a targeted, per-game experiment. If the game had only its Linux version installed, Steam may download the Windows build, increasing the required storage and download time. If the new path performs worse, return to the Compatibility panel and undo the override so Steam can use the game’s default selection.
For Windows games that still fail after this test, Valve’s general launch guidance points Linux users toward the Steam Play community discussion forum for game-specific reports. Treat community reports as leads: a workaround that works for one Proton version, game patch, or launch option is not a guarantee for every Deck.

4. Verify the game’s installed files
Verification is appropriate when a crash follows an interrupted update, when content appears to be missing, or when the game reaches “Preparing to Launch” and then closes. It compares the local installation with Steam’s expected files and reacquires files that need replacement.
- Highlight the game in your Library.
- Press Menu and open Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish; Valve notes that verification can take several minutes.
One or more files can fail verification normally. Valve explains that local configuration files may be intentionally excluded from replacement, so a message about files that did not validate is not automatically proof that the installation is damaged. Let Steam complete its repair, then test the game before deleting saves or changing system settings. See Valve’s Verify Integrity of Game Files instructions for the current wording of the control.
Verification is a file-installation check, not a universal cure for compatibility or performance problems. It will not change a game’s Deck category, make an unsupported launcher behave like a native application, or supply a graphics preset. If Steam reports that files were reacquired, launch the title again and check whether the original symptom—not merely the validation message—has changed.
5. Fix games that launch but run poorly
If the game opens but has stutter, low frame pacing, long pauses, or an otherwise heavy load, reduce the game’s rendering work before attempting system recovery. Start with the game’s own graphics menu.
- Switch to a lower overall graphics preset.
- If you want to preserve image quality, lower individual settings that are expensive for the game, such as shadows, reflections, volumetric effects, view distance, or resolution scaling.
- Apply one change at a time and replay the same demanding scene so you can identify which setting helps.
- Keep the setting that gives you stable play without assuming that another title needs the same preset.
Valve’s guidance is to adjust graphics settings; it does not establish a universal preset or frame-rate target for every Steam Deck game. A title can be marked Verified and still receive an update that changes its workload. Record the settings that work for that game rather than applying a single Deck-wide profile.

When comparing settings, use the same area, save, or repeatable action where the slowdown occurred. A change that helps in a quiet menu may not help during a crowded scene. If performance is normal on the built-in screen but poor on an external display, follow the dock steps below instead of continually lowering handheld settings.
6. Isolate dock and external-display problems
When poor image quality, no signal, or unusual performance occurs only while the Deck is connected to a television, monitor, dock, or hub, test the handheld by itself first. If the game is smooth on the built-in screen, the issue is in the external-display path rather than the game’s basic installation.
- Disconnect the dock or USB-C hub and launch the game on the Deck’s own display.
- If the handheld test is normal, reconnect the display and adjust the game’s resolution, refresh rate, or graphics settings for the external screen.
- If the image remains unreliable, try another cable or another input connector, as Valve recommends for some docked setups.
- Retest with the fewest connected devices possible, then add peripherals back individually.
Third-party USB-C docks and hubs may work, but Thunderbolt and DisplayLink docks are not officially supported. Dock compatibility is therefore a narrow branch for external-display symptoms, not a general remedy for handheld games that will not launch. Valve’s Docking the Steam Deck article covers the display-specific guidance.
Do not use a docked failure as evidence that the game installation is corrupt until the handheld test also fails. A cable or input change can resolve a display path problem without changing Proton, reinstalling the game, or touching SteamOS.
7. Decide when to escalate to SteamOS Beta or support
If several unrelated games show the same launch or stability problem after updating, restarting, disabling third-party applications, testing compatibility, and verifying files, the scope is no longer one game. Valve suggests trying the Steam Deck Beta after ordinary updates and a restart have not resolved persistent stability or performance trouble. Beta software contains changes that are still being tested, so it is an experiment rather than a guaranteed repair.
- Confirm that the problem affects more than one title or appears in SteamOS itself.
- Install the current stable updates and restart once more if you have not done so after the latest update.
- Only then consider opting into the Steam Deck Beta through the system’s update-channel controls.
- Retest the same reproducible scenario and note whether the behavior changes.
- If the problem persists, use SteamOS/Steam Deck Discussions for reports and contact Steam Support with the game, Deck model, SteamOS version, compatibility setting, and exact symptom.
Valve’s Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide links to these escalation routes. Include what you already tried so support can distinguish a game-specific failure from a system-wide one.
When contacting support, describe whether the failure happens before the game window, after a launcher appears, or only while loading a save. Include whether the same title worked previously and whether the behavior changes with the dock disconnected. These details make the report more useful than simply stating that the game “doesn’t work.”
8. Use recovery tools only for broader SteamOS failures
Recovery is disproportionate when one game fails but other games and SteamOS work normally. Consider it only when multiple applications, system services, updates, or the Steam interface remain broken after normal troubleshooting and support escalation.

| Option | Scope | User-data consequence | Appropriate use |
|---|---|---|---|
| SteamOS Beta | Installs a newer, changing software channel. | Not a reset; normal user data is not the point of the operation. | Persistent stability or performance trouble after stable updates and restart. |
| Rollback | Returns SteamOS to a previous known-good version. | Valve documents rollback while retaining user data. | A recent system update appears to have caused broad failures. |
| Factory reset | Restores the Deck to a clean system state. | Removes local data; back up anything you need first. | Broad software corruption when less destructive options fail. |
| Erase user data | Deletes the user environment and local content. | Local data is removed. | When a complete user-data reset is specifically justified. |
| SteamOS repair | Attempts to repair or reinstall system software. | Follow the current Valve instructions carefully; effects depend on the selected action. | System-level damage that prevents normal operation. |
| SteamOS re-image | Replaces the operating-system image. | Re-imaging wipes the device; make a verified backup first. | Last-resort recovery for serious SteamOS failure. |
Valve’s recovery choices and their consequences can change. Read the current SteamOS Recovery and Troubleshooting and SteamOS Installation and Repair instructions immediately before selecting a reset, erase, repair, or re-image action. Do not start a destructive procedure merely because one game will not launch.
Rollback, reset, repair, and re-image are not interchangeable labels. Rollback is intended to return to a known-good operating-system version while retaining user data, whereas factory-reset and erase actions remove local information. A repair or re-image procedure can also have different outcomes depending on the option selected. Read each confirmation screen and stop if the stated data consequence is not what you intend.
A practical decision path
- One game will not launch: update, restart, inspect its Deck notes, test the per-game Proton setting, and verify files.
- One game launches but stutters: lower its graphics preset or individual settings and retest the same scene.
- Several games fail after a recent change: remove third-party Desktop Mode variables, confirm SteamOS is current, and consider Beta or support only after stable troubleshooting.
- Only the docked setup fails: isolate the handheld, then test display settings, cable, and input connector.
- SteamOS itself is unreliable: gather version and symptom details, contact support, and evaluate rollback or recovery with the data consequences in view.
This order keeps the least disruptive fixes first and prevents a single game’s compatibility problem from turning into an unnecessary device wipe.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What “fixed” should mean
A useful fix is repeatable: the same game reaches its menu, loads a save, and remains stable through the scene that previously failed. After changing Proton, verifying files, or lowering graphics, launch the game more than once and test after a full restart. If the problem returns only after a game update or only with a dock connected, document that condition instead of treating the Deck as permanently repaired. Compatibility labels and software behavior are snapshots, while your per-game settings and verified troubleshooting steps provide the practical record for the next update.

Does Deck Verified guarantee that a game will always launch?
No. Verified describes Valve’s compatibility assessment at the time of evaluation. A later game patch, launcher change, configuration, or other software state can create a new failure. Use the Store page’s current Steam Deck Compatibility notes and troubleshoot the installation you actually have.
Should I force Proton for every game that fails?
No. Proton is a targeted experiment for the affected title. Some games work best with their native Linux build, while others use the Windows build through Steam Play. If only Linux files are installed, forcing Proton may download the Windows version, so allow for additional storage and download time.
Why did file verification say that files failed to validate?
Valve says local configuration files can normally fail verification because they are intentionally not replaced. A validation message is not automatically evidence of corruption. Let the process finish, then launch the game and check whether the original crash or missing-content symptom remains.

What should I do when a game launches but stutters?
Lower the overall graphics preset or reduce individual settings that add rendering load. Change one setting at a time and repeat the same demanding scene. Valve does not provide one universal preset or frame-rate target for every title, so keep a per-game configuration that is stable on your Deck.

Could my dock be causing the problem?
Yes, when the failure appears only on an external display. Disconnect the dock or hub and test on the built-in screen. If handheld play is normal, adjust the external display’s in-game settings and try another cable or input. Thunderbolt and DisplayLink docks are not officially supported, although some third-party USB-C docks and hubs may work.
When is a factory reset justified?
Not for one game that fails while the rest of SteamOS works. Consider reset, erase, repair, or re-image only when multiple applications or SteamOS functions remain broken after ordinary troubleshooting and support escalation. Check Valve’s current instructions and back up data first because several options remove local content.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Deck Verified guarantee that a game will always launch?
No. Verified is Valve’s compatibility assessment, not a permanent guarantee. Later game updates, launcher changes, or local configuration can introduce problems, so check the current Store-page notes.
Should I force Proton for every game that fails?
No. Try Proton per game when appropriate. If only the Linux version is installed, forcing Proton may download the Windows build and require additional storage.
Why did file verification report files that failed to validate?
Valve says local configuration files may normally fail verification because they are not replaced. The message does not automatically mean the installation is damaged.
What should I do when a game launches but stutters?
Lower the graphics preset or expensive individual settings, changing one option at a time and retesting the same demanding scene.
Could a dock cause my game problem?
If the issue occurs only on an external display, disconnect the dock and test handheld mode. Then try display settings, another cable, or another input connector.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When is a factory reset justified?
Only when multiple applications or SteamOS functions remain broken after normal troubleshooting and support escalation. Recovery options can remove local data, so follow Valve’s current instructions and back up first.
The Bottom Line
For one troublesome game, update SteamOS, restart, disable third-party Desktop Mode apps, read the title’s Deck notes, test its native or Proton path, verify files, and lower graphics settings when performance is the issue. Isolate dock problems separately. Use Beta software, rollback, reset, repair, or re-imaging only for broader SteamOS failures, with Valve’s data-loss warnings in view.
