A Steam Deck game marked Verified can still have a control or performance problem in your current setup. Start by updating SteamOS and restarting, then isolate whether the issue affects one game or the Deck more broadly. For controls, check the active game layout and test controller inputs; for performance, reproduce the problem with the overlay open and change settings one at a time.
What “Verified” does—and does not—mean
Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility ratings describe how a title works under its assessment, not whether every configuration or play session will be trouble-free. Verified means a game works great on Deck by default without additional modification. Playable means it works but may require manual configuration; Unsupported means Valve does not currently consider it playable; and Unknown means it has not been tested. Check the game’s Steam Store page under Steam Deck Compatibility for the specific requirements it met or did not meet. Valve says games tested through Deck Verified retain their ratings on both LCD and OLED models. Valve’s Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide explains the categories and general stability steps.
Start with system-wide checks
Install updates and restart
- Open Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates and install any available SteamOS update.
- Restart from the power menu or the update screen.
- If you installed third-party apps through Desktop Mode, exit or disable them temporarily, then retest the game.
These steps help determine whether a broader stability issue or an added app is involved before you change game-specific settings.
Compare with another game
Try another title that uses the same controls or has a similar performance load. If the problem appears across games, focus first on Deck input registration or system-level stability. If it occurs only in one title, inspect that game’s layout, compatibility settings, and graphics options. This comparison narrows the layer to investigate; it does not establish the cause by itself.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If the problem is controls
Check the game’s active layout
- Open the game’s Library details and go to its gamepad or control settings.
- Inspect the active layout and confirm it matches the controls you expect.
- If appropriate, edit the layout or browse and apply a community layout, then test the affected action again.
Test whether the Deck registers input
Open Steam > Settings > Controller > Test Controller Inputs and check whether the affected buttons or controls register. If the test shows input but the game does not respond as expected, concentrate on the game’s active layout. If the test does not register the input, the issue is not limited to that game’s layout and needs broader controller troubleshooting. Valve’s Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide covers the controller settings and input test.
If the problem is performance
Watch performance while the problem happens
Open Steam’s in-game overlay performance monitor and reproduce the slowdown or stutter. It can show FPS and available CPU, GPU, and system RAM readings. Pay attention to minimum FPS as well as the average: an average can look steady while an unusually long frame causes a visible hitch. Valve’s guide to the In-Game Overlay Performance Monitor explains the readings.

Lower graphics demand
Try a lower graphics preset first, or adjust demanding settings individually. Change one setting at a time and retest the same scene or action so you can tell whether that adjustment helped.
Match refresh expectations to your Deck screen
Steam Deck LCD displays are capped at 60 Hz; OLED displays are capped at 90 Hz. You can lower the refresh rate, but setting an individual game above the device’s cap will not improve performance and may drain the battery faster. The appropriate cap depends on whether your Deck has an LCD or OLED display.

Try a different compatibility tool only for a game-specific issue
For a Steam game, open the game’s Properties > Compatibility and, if appropriate, select Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool. Valve suggests trying the latest Proton version. Record the original setting, change only one item, and retest before trying another option.
Changing the compatibility tool can affect which game build Steam installs: Steam may automatically download the Windows build if only the Linux version was installed. Allow for that possibility when evaluating the change; do not assume the same installed build remains in use.

Escalate if the issue persists
- After updating and restarting, consider opting into the Steam Deck Beta to check whether a recent change addresses the issue. Beta software is optional and is not a guaranteed fix.
- Look for related SteamOS or Steam Deck discussions.
- If the problem remains, contact Steam Support with the game name, the exact control or performance symptom, when it began, and the settings or troubleshooting steps you have already tried.
The available general procedures do not identify a cause or a working layout for an unnamed game. A more specific diagnosis depends on the title, its version, the SteamOS version, the active control layout, and whether the symptom reproduces in other games.
