When a Steam game will not download or launch, start with the reversible checks: restart Steam and your computer, then match the fix to the symptom. For download trouble, clear Steam’s download cache, repair the library folder, verify the game files, and test a nearby download region. For launch trouble, verify files, update the operating system and drivers, check the game’s requirements, and temporarily isolate background-software conflicts. Retest after each step so you can identify what changed. If the same error remains, follow its specific branch below before contacting Steam Support or the game’s developer.

First, narrow down what is failing

Notice whether the problem affects one game or several, one library drive or every library, and one network or other internet activity too. Those patterns help distinguish a damaged game installation from a library-permission, drive, network, or broader Steam issue. Use the least disruptive checks first; do not reinstall or buy hardware before there is evidence that either is necessary.

  • One game, one symptom: verify that game’s files and check its current system requirements.
  • Several downloads or updates: check the download cache, library permissions, download region, and Steam’s service status.
  • Games on one drive or library: repair that library and, if available, test another internal drive as a diagnostic.
  • Steam and other online services both fail: investigate the local network, router, firewall, antivirus, or internet connection.

Steam’s Update & Installation Issues guidance covers several of these installation checks. Steam’s troubleshooting advice is not a guarantee that any one step will fix every configuration.

Use the pattern as a guide, not a diagnosis by itself. If only one title is affected while other games download and launch normally, start with that title’s files and requirements. If several titles fail in the same library, a folder permission or drive issue becomes more relevant to test. If the same problem occurs only on one network, compare with a different network if practical. After each change, repeat the same action that failed—for example, resume the same download or launch the same game—before moving to another fix. This makes it easier to tell whether the change helped.

How to fix a Steam game that will not download or update

1. Restart Steam and your computer

Exit Steam, reopen it, and retry the download. If that does not help, restart the computer and test again. A restart can reset system state and release file or resource locks that interfere with installation. Steam lists restarting among its basic troubleshooting steps.

Keep the first test simple: do not change several settings at once. If restarting Steam clears the issue, there is no need to proceed through the rest of the list. If it does not, restart the computer before testing the next download-specific step. This gives Steam and the operating system a fresh start without changing installed game data or network settings.

2. Clear Steam’s download cache

  1. Open Steam and choose Steam > Settings > Downloads.
  2. Select Clear Download Cache and confirm the action.
  3. Sign in to Steam again when prompted, then retry the download.

Steam says clearing the cache can help with games that will not download or start. It does not remove installed games, but you will need to log in again. See Steam Support’s Clear download cache instructions. Steam’s own wording is explicit: “This process will not affect your currently installed games, but you will need to log into Steam afterwards.”

This is a reasonable early step when a download is stuck or will not begin because it is reversible and does not uninstall your library. Be ready to authenticate again, then check whether the same download starts or progresses. Clearing the cache is not a promise of faster downloads, and it does not establish that the problem was caused by the cache if another change was made at the same time.

3. Repair the Steam library folder

A library folder must be writable for Steam to install or update files. If its permissions have broken, downloads can fail even when the connection is fine.

  1. Open Steam > Settings > Storage.
  2. Choose the library that contains the affected game and open its menu.
  3. Select the repair option, then allow Steam to finish before testing the download again.

Steam’s installation troubleshooting guidance describes library-folder repair and write permissions.

Make sure you repair the library that actually contains the affected title. If the issue is limited to one library, repairing unrelated libraries is unlikely to clarify the cause. Let Steam finish its repair process before retrying, and note whether downloads in that library behave differently afterward. A library that cannot be written to can block installation even when Steam itself is online.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Verify the game’s installed files

  1. Open Library and right-click the affected game.
  2. Select Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
  3. Wait for verification to finish, then retry the download or launch the game.

Verification checks for missing or damaged files and can replace files Steam finds incorrect. A small number of failed verification results can be normal for local configuration files; do not assume that a few such results mean the whole installation is broken. Steam explains the check in Verify Integrity of Game Files.

Steam Support describes verification this way: “If you are missing textures or other content in game or experiencing crashing while playing a game, you can have Steam verify that the game’s files are installed correctly on the computer.” This makes verification useful for both incomplete installations and launch problems. Let the check finish rather than interrupting it, then retest the original symptom. If the same failure remains, move to the next branch rather than repeatedly running verification without new evidence.

5. Test a different nearby download region

If a download is slow, stuck, or repeatedly errors, try a different nearby region in Steam > Settings > Downloads, then test again. A content server may be slow, overloaded, or faulty, but there is no universally best region: performance varies, so treat the change as a test rather than a promised speed boost. Steam describes this possibility in its installation guidance and server troubleshooting article.

Choose a nearby alternative, retry the same download, and compare whether it begins, continues, or still produces the same error. If changing regions makes no difference, switch back or continue to the network and service checks. A region test helps isolate a content-server issue; it does not prove that your original region is faulty or that another region will always perform better.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Check service status and the connection

See whether Steam reports that its servers are unavailable or too busy. If other Steam services or unrelated online activity are also failing, check the network connection, router, firewall, and antivirus settings. A different network can help determine whether the issue is specific to the local network or internet provider. Do not treat an outage as established unless Steam reports one; availability can change.

Pay attention to the scope of the failure. A single download error does not, by itself, show that Steam’s servers are down. If Steam reports an availability problem, retry later rather than making unrelated changes to the computer. If other services are affected too, testing a different network can help separate a local network or provider issue from a problem limited to Steam. Firewall and antivirus checks should be targeted to the observed problem; do not leave security protections disabled as a general workaround.

7. Isolate a drive or library problem

If the trouble consistently follows one library or drive, repair the library first. If you have another internal drive and library available, test a download there; this is a diagnostic comparison, not a reason to replace hardware without evidence. Check the affected drive for errors if problems continue. Steam advises consulting a technician when drive or memory errors are suspected. External drives can disconnect, and a forced shutdown while Steam is writing data can corrupt library information.

Compare like with like: try the same game or download in another available library, then see whether the problem follows the original location. If it does, that narrows the issue toward the library or drive; it still does not establish that the drive must be replaced. If an external drive is involved, confirm that it remains connected and available to Steam. Avoid forcing a shutdown while Steam is writing files, since interrupted writes can damage library information.

How to fix a Steam game that will not launch

1. Restart Steam and the computer

Restart both, then try the game again. This is Steam’s starting point for launch failures, including games that stop at “Preparing to Launch.”

Test the same game after the restart before changing drivers, settings, or background programs. If it still closes or remains at the launch stage, record any displayed error wording. An exact message can point to a more relevant branch later in this guide than a generic reinstall.

2. Verify the game files

Use Library > right-click the game > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. Let the process complete before launching again. Damaged or incomplete files can prevent a game from starting; Steam’s verification instructions explain what the check does.

If verification reports a small number of files that could not be validated, that can be normal for local configuration files. Focus on whether the process completes and whether the game’s original launch problem changes. Verification is a targeted check for the installation, not a diagnostic for every possible compatibility, system, or software-conflict issue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Update the operating system and drivers

Install available operating-system and device-driver updates, then retest. Steam’s guidance also calls out Windows updates and .NET Framework updates for Windows users. On Linux, check that the distribution and graphics drivers are current; on macOS, check for system updates. The relevant updates depend on your operating system and hardware.

Use the guidance for the platform you actually play on rather than applying Windows-specific checks to another system. Once the applicable updates are installed, try launching the same game again. If the error is unchanged, continue to requirements and software-conflict checks instead of assuming that an update alone will solve it.

4. Temporarily isolate background software

Non-essential background programs can interfere with a launch. Close or temporarily disable them one at a time and test the game, restoring the programs after each check. Do not leave security software disabled as a permanent workaround. Steam identifies interfering software as one possible cause in its launch troubleshooting guidance and server troubleshooting guidance.

Changing one non-essential program at a time makes the result more useful: if the game launches, you can identify what was different and restore applications that were not involved. Restore protections and other needed software after testing. This is a temporary isolation check, not advice to leave your computer without security software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Compare the system with the game’s requirements

Check the game’s current Steam store page for its stated hardware requirements and supported operating systems, then compare those details with your computer. Requirements are specific to each game and can change. Steam cautions that a computer near a game’s minimum requirements may still have launch or performance issues.

Check both operating-system support and hardware; a computer can meet some listed specifications while still being incompatible in another respect. Do not treat requirements for one game as a universal Steam standard. If the game does not support your operating system, or the computer is near minimum specifications, that context matters when deciding whether a general file repair is likely to help.

6. If you use Linux and Proton

For a game without native Linux support, check the game’s community guidance for Proton or Steam Play compatibility. Compatibility is not guaranteed. If you can reproduce a Proton problem, use Valve’s Proton issue-reporting process; avoid assuming that a launch failure necessarily indicates a fault in your local installation.

Use title-specific community information to understand whether other players have reported a similar issue, but distinguish reports from a guarantee that a game will work on your setup. If the failure is reproducible and appears to involve Proton, Valve’s issue-reporting process is the relevant escalation path described in Steam’s guidance.

7. Check for a hung process or client beta issue

If Steam says the game is running but no window appears, check the operating system’s process manager for a hung game process and close it if appropriate. Restart the computer if it cannot be closed cleanly, then try again. If you use the Steam client beta, test the stable client as well. For a persistent failure specific to a third-party game, contact that game’s support team.

This is especially relevant when the error says the app is already running: a silent crash can leave a process behind even though no game window is visible. Do not force-close unrelated processes. If you cannot close the game cleanly, a restart is the safer next test. Comparing beta and stable client behavior can also help establish whether the issue is limited to the beta client.

Fixes for specific Steam errors

“Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable)”

Check your antivirus quarantine or detection history first. A security tool may have mistakenly flagged a game file. Then verify the game’s files using the Installed Files steps above. If the error persists, submit a Steam Support ticket with an uncropped screenshot of the error, a system report, and a list of software you removed during conflict testing. Steam’s instructions are at Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable).

Do not jump straight to reinstalling before checking quarantine and verifying files: a missing executable can reflect a mistaken detection as well as a failed or corrupted installation. If a security tool did flag a file, use the relevant official support guidance for that tool and Steam rather than downloading a replacement executable from an unverified site. For a support request, keep the screenshot uncropped so the complete message and context remain visible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“This game is currently unavailable”

Restart Steam, update drivers, and verify the game files. Also check whether Steam files have read-only attributes or the network configuration is causing trouble. A canceled or blocked secondary installer—such as one needed for runtime components—can also prevent launch. Follow the game’s documented installer guidance; do not download runtime files from unverified sites. Steam’s “This game is currently unavailable” troubleshooting page provides further checks.

Think about whether a secondary installer was canceled or blocked during setup, since some games rely on installer steps in addition to the main game files. Use the game’s documented instructions for those components. The error alone does not identify which cause applies, so work through the restart, driver, file, read-only, and network checks rather than assuming a single cause.

A game appears uninstalled even though its files are present

Try starting the installation so Steam can rediscover existing files. Confirm that the game folder is in the correct library, or add the alternate library location through storage management. Reinstall only if Steam still cannot recognize the files. External drives can disconnect, and an abrupt shutdown while Steam is writing can corrupt library information. See Steam’s Installed games are appearing as uninstalled guidance.

Before deleting files or choosing a full reinstall, check whether the existing folder belongs to the library Steam is currently using. If the folder is in another library, add that location through storage management so Steam can look for the game there. Starting the installation can allow Steam to discover files already present. Reinstalling is the fallback if those recognition steps fail, not the first step when the data may still be on the drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Failed to start game (app already running)”

A silent crash or hung process may remain after the game closes. Use the operating system’s process manager to close it if appropriate, restart the computer, and verify the files. If you participate in the Steam beta, compare the behavior with the stable client. If the failure continues in one game, contact that game’s support team. Steam’s app already running troubleshooting page covers this error.

If the operating system does not let you close the process cleanly, restart rather than repeatedly trying to launch another copy. Afterward, test once more and verify the game files if the message persists. When only one third-party game continues to fail, its developer may be better placed to investigate a game-specific problem.

When to contact support

If the steps for the matching symptom or error do not resolve the issue, contact Steam Support or the game developer. Include the exact error wording, the affected game, your operating system, what you have already tried, and a system report when requested. For a missing-executable case, include the uncropped screenshot and the software list described above. Specific details help support teams distinguish an installation problem from a compatibility, network, or game-specific issue.

Choose the destination based on the remaining problem. Use Steam Support for Steam client, library, installation, or Steam-specific error guidance. Contact the game’s developer for a failure that remains isolated to that title after the relevant Steam checks. For a reproducible Proton issue, follow Valve’s Proton reporting process. Include a concise sequence of what happened and which checks you completed; do not omit the exact wording of the error or replace it with a guess about the cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no universal success rate for these steps: Steam’s instructions are troubleshooting guidance, and the cause varies by game, computer, operating system, network, and library. The useful goal is to narrow the problem with low-risk tests, then give support enough detail to investigate the remaining branch.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fix a Steam game that won’t download?

Restart Steam and your computer, clear the download cache, repair the library folder that contains the game, and verify the game’s files. If the download is still slow, stuck, or erroring, test a different nearby download region and check Steam service availability and your network. Retest after each step.

Why is my Steam download stuck?

A stuck download can involve the download cache, a library folder that is not writable, a slow or overloaded content server, Steam service availability, or a local network issue. Clear the cache, repair the relevant library, and test another nearby region. If other online services also fail, compare networks and check the router, firewall, and antivirus configuration.

Why won’t my Steam game launch?

Common troubleshooting branches include damaged or incomplete game files, outdated operating-system or device-driver software, background-program conflicts, unmet system requirements, or operating-system incompatibility. Restart Steam and the computer, verify files, install applicable updates, temporarily isolate non-essential background programs, and compare your computer with the game’s current requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I verify Steam game files?

In Steam, open Library, right-click the game, then choose Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. Wait for verification to finish before trying the game again. A small number of failed verification results can be normal for local configuration files.

Will clearing Steam’s download cache delete my games?

No. Steam says clearing the download cache does not affect currently installed games, but you will need to sign in to Steam again afterward.

Should I reinstall a Steam game that Steam says is uninstalled even though its files are still there?

Not immediately. Start installation so Steam can try to rediscover the existing files, check that the game folder is in the correct library, and add the alternate library location through storage management if needed. Reinstall only if those recognition steps fail.

What should I do about a “Missing Executable” error?

First check your antivirus quarantine or detection history, since a game file can be mistakenly flagged. Then verify the game files. If the error remains, contact Steam Support with an uncropped screenshot, a system report, and a list of software removed during conflict testing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Start with a restart, then use the symptom and the scope of the failure to choose the next low-risk check. Clear the cache, repair the right library, verify files, and test a nearby region for downloads; for launch failures, check files, updates, conflicts, and game-specific requirements. Retest after each change, and take persistent or exact error messages to Steam Support or the game developer.
