If Steam Link VR cannot find your PC, keeps disconnecting, or stutters, work through the fault in this order: confirm headset and PC compatibility, put both devices on the same non-isolated home network, check Steam streaming and firewall access, then tune Wi-Fi and SteamVR. Steam Link depends on the whole path between a Windows PC, SteamVR, the router, and a supported standalone headset, so changing graphics settings first can miss the cause.

Check that your PC, headset, and network meet Steam Link requirements

Steam Link streams a PC’s Steam library to supported standalone headsets. Steam’s current support page lists these minimums; requirements can change, so consult Steam’s Steam Link setup and requirements if your device is not listed here.

Requirement Steam’s listed minimum or supported devices
PC software and OS Steam and SteamVR running on Windows 10 or newer.
PC graphics NVIDIA GTX 970 or better, or AMD RX 570 or better; RX 6400 and RX 6500 XT are excluded.
Router 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 or better. Steam recommends Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E.
Meta headsets Quest 2, Quest 3, or Quest Pro; headset OS v74 is required.
PICO headsets PICO 4 Ultra, PICO 4, or Neo 3; headset OS v5.13 is required.
HTC headsets Vive Focus Vision or Vive XR Elite; headset OS v7.0.999.344 is required.

Steam’s recommended PC configuration includes 16 GB RAM, an Intel Core i5-4590 or AMD FX 8350 equivalent or better, and an NVIDIA RTX 2070 or better. These are Steam’s published requirements, not a guarantee that every connection issue is caused by hardware.

  1. Sign in to Steam on the PC and leave Steam running.
  2. Connect the PC and headset to the same home network.
  3. Install Steam Link from the headset’s store, open it, and follow its pairing prompts.

If Steam Link cannot find the PC or says the host is offline

Discovery problems are often caused by the devices being on different network segments, streaming being disabled, or a firewall blocking Steam. Try the checks below in order.

  1. Check the PC and Steam session. Make sure the PC is awake and online, Steam is open, and you are signed in. Steam’s host-offline troubleshooting page also recommends checking streaming is enabled.
  2. Confirm both devices use the same home network. A shared internet connection does not necessarily mean the devices can communicate: guest Wi-Fi, separate mesh networks, or client isolation can keep them apart. Steam says Remote Play is generally unsupported on public, work or school, guest, captive-portal, and client-isolated networks. See Steam’s Remote Play network guidance.
  3. Enable streaming on the PC. In Steam, open Settings > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play (the label may appear as “Enable streaming” in Steam support guidance). If it was already enabled, switch it off and on again, then retry pairing.
  4. Allow Steam through the PC firewall. Use the firewall’s allowed-app controls or create appropriate rules rather than leaving the firewall disabled. Steam lists these Remote Play and VR streaming ports: UDP 27031 and 27036; TCP 27036 and 27037; and UDP 10400 and 10401 for VR streaming. Recent Steam or game updates can trigger a new firewall prompt or rule block even when the setup previously worked.
  5. Check the router for client or access-point isolation. Disable isolation for the trusted home network so the headset can reach the PC. Do not try to bypass restrictions on a school, workplace, public, or managed network; use a permitted private network instead.

If the picture stutters, freezes, or changes quality

First improve the network path before assuming the graphics card is the cause. Steam identifies wireless contention as a common source of performance trouble and recommends wiring the host PC to the router.

  • Wire the PC to the router with Ethernet. This removes the PC’s Wi-Fi hop from the stream. The headset can remain on Wi-Fi. If the PC currently uses Wi-Fi and the router has an available LAN port, an Ethernet cable is a targeted change to try, not a guaranteed fix.
  • Put the headset on 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Steam recommends 5 GHz over the often congested 2.4 GHz band. The 5 GHz signal has shorter range, so test near the router and avoid placing the router behind obstructions or inside a cabinet.
  • Reduce competing wireless traffic. Pause large downloads, video streams, and other high-traffic wireless activity while testing. Keep the router and PC in open, ventilated locations.
  • Use Steam’s performance overlay. Enable the Remote Play performance overlay and watch its cyan network-time line during a hitch. Large spikes commonly coincide with stuttering or freezing, which helps distinguish a network delay from a purely visual-quality complaint. Steam explains the overlay and other network suggestions in Suggested Network Settings.
  • Lower streaming demand gradually. Try Balanced or Fast quality first. If needed, reduce resolution or bandwidth in advanced streaming settings. Steam suggests starting at 3 Mbit/s and increasing gradually until hitches appear, then backing down; that is a tuning approach, not a universal required bitrate.
  • Review router software and prioritization. Update router firmware if an update is available; Steam warns that some firmware can mishandle the UDP traffic Remote Play uses. If the router provides QoS or network prioritization, you can try prioritizing the PC and streaming client.

If SteamVR fails to start or the connection still fails

Once the PC and headset can communicate reliably, address SteamVR itself. These are general SteamVR troubleshooting steps and are not guaranteed to repair a network discovery or Wi-Fi fault.

  1. In Steam, open the Library, select the Tools category, right-click SteamVR, and choose Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of tool files.
  2. Check for graphics-driver updates from the graphics-card maker, then restart SteamVR.
  3. Run Room Setup again if SteamVR setup or tracking is the problem.
  4. Restart Windows and test Steam Link again.
  5. If the problem persists, start SteamVR in safe mode to prevent some third-party drivers and components from loading. If that changes the result, investigate recently installed VR utilities for conflicts. Steam names Natural Locomotion and LIV as examples that can conflict in some cases.

Steam’s broader SteamVR troubleshooting guidance also covers wired headset display and Direct Mode issues; those paths do not directly apply to the standalone wireless Steam Link setup.

Should you change your router or buy anything?

Use the diagnosis to decide. Steam lists a 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 router as the minimum and recommends Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E. Before upgrading, check whether the host can connect by Ethernet, whether the headset gets a stable 5 GHz signal where you play, and whether the router firmware or QoS settings need attention. A newer router will not fix an incompatible PC, disabled streaming, blocked firewall access, or a SteamVR software conflict.

When to contact support

If these checks do not resolve the fault, the remaining cause may depend on the specific headset firmware, router model, firewall product, graphics driver, or local wireless conditions. Contact Steam Support for Steam or Remote Play issues, and the headset or router maker for device-specific network and firmware help. Include the headset and OS version, PC hardware and Windows version, router model, whether Ethernet changes the result, and what the performance overlay shows.
