Start by identifying whether the problem is a low frame rate, uneven frame delivery, or network delay. Use Steam’s in-game performance monitor while reproducing the same scene, then change one game, display, or SteamOS setting at a time. Lowering render resolution and demanding effects is the most direct response to consistently low FPS; a refresh-rate, VSync, or frame-cap mismatch is more relevant when the average FPS looks fine but motion hitches. Network “lag” needs a separate diagnosis because local rendering settings cannot repair an internet connection.
First, determine what “lag” means on your Steam Machine
Players use lag for several different symptoms. A game may render too few frames, deliver frames at irregular intervals, or pause while an online connection catches up. These feel similar from the sofa, but they require different tests.

These categories can overlap. A demanding game can have both a low base frame rate and stutter, while an online title can show network delay on top of local rendering problems. Treat the table as a way to choose the next test, not as proof of a cause.
Build a repeatable baseline before changing settings
Randomly changing several options makes it impossible to know which change helped. Reproduce the problem in a scene you can revisit: a busy hub, a combat encounter, a driving section, or the same benchmark route. Note the game version, SteamOS version, display refresh rate, resolution, graphics preset, ray-tracing state, upscaling mode, frame-generation state and whether the issue happens online.

- Test one game first. Play the selected scene for several minutes and record whether the problem is continuous or intermittent.
- Test a second, known-good title. If only one game is affected, keep the investigation focused on that game until its settings and patches are checked.
- Keep the display configuration constant. Do not switch between television picture modes, refresh rates and cables during the first comparison.
- Change one variable per run. After every change, replay the same section long enough to encounter the original symptom.
Valve’s general hardware troubleshooting guidance identifies inefficient game code, game bugs and hardware problems as possible sources of slow frames. That guidance is written for Windows, however, so its Windows-specific procedures should not be copied into SteamOS menus. The baseline above is a platform-neutral diagnostic method.
Use Steam’s performance monitor, not average FPS alone
Open Steam’s in-game performance monitor through the Steam overlay or the performance settings available on your SteamOS build. The exact label and level of detail can change between releases. Watch the average FPS together with the available frame-time or performance information while the hitch occurs.
- Consistently low FPS: The machine is not producing frames quickly enough for the chosen workload. Rendering changes are the appropriate first response.
- Acceptable average FPS with large frame-time spikes: Frames are arriving unevenly. That is micro-stutter, and an average can hide it.
- FPS falls only in a repeatable effect or location: A particular graphics feature, shader workload or game-code path may be saturating the frame budget.
- Numbers stay stable while online characters jump: Look at network symptoms rather than reducing image quality.
Steam describes micro-stutter as uneven frame delivery that can feel poor even when the average looks acceptable. Capture what the monitor shows during the actual hitch; do not dismiss the report because the headline FPS number is high.

Fix a consistently low average FPS
Make the least destructive rendering change first, then retest. The goal is to reduce GPU work while preserving the image and controls you care about.

1. Lower the game’s render resolution
Reduce the resolution selected inside the game rather than immediately changing the television’s output mode. Fewer rendered pixels reduce the workload, but the image may look softer. If the title offers a resolution scale, lower it in a small step and compare the same scene.
2. Use the game’s built-in upscaler
When a title provides an upscaling option, test it at a moderate quality mode before choosing an aggressive performance mode. Upscaling can recover performance by rendering internally at a lower resolution, but fine detail can shimmer or blur. Do not assume that an upscaler has the same quality or latency characteristics in every game.
3. Reduce the settings that cost the most
Lower demanding options one at a time. Shadows, volumetric effects, reflections, crowd density, view distance and ambient-occlusion quality are common candidates, but the expensive setting differs by engine. Compare the image while standing in the same location so that a visual improvement is not mistaken for a performance improvement.
4. Disable or reduce ray tracing
Ray tracing can impose a large rendering cost. If a demanding title is already below your acceptable frame rate, turn ray tracing off or move its quality to the lowest available level before sacrificing every other setting. This is a game-specific remedy, not a guarantee that ray tracing is the cause in every title.

5. Treat frame generation as a separate trade-off
Frame generation can increase the displayed frame count while the underlying, or base, frame rate remains low. It can also add input latency or produce visible artifacts. Judge it by camera response and image stability, not by the displayed FPS number alone. If controls feel delayed, compare the game with frame generation disabled at a lower but more stable native frame rate.
Fix stutter when the average FPS looks adequate
When the monitor shows a reasonable average but motion still hitches, stop lowering every quality setting. Investigate cadence and frame-time consistency instead.
Check refresh rate and VSync as a controlled experiment
Refresh rate determines how often the display can present a new image; VSync coordinates game presentation with that refresh cycle. Steam’s help material explains their relationship but does not identify one universal setting that cures stutter. Test the game with its current VSync state, then make one deliberate change and replay the same scene. Record whether frame-time spikes become less frequent, more frequent or unchanged.
Test a frame cap without stacking caps blindly
A frame cap can make output cadence more predictable when the game cannot sustain the display’s maximum refresh rate. Valve’s gamescope documentation includes a 30 FPS cap example and a general frame-rate-cap capability. Documentation of that capability does not prove that every gamescope command-line option is exposed in the standard Steam Machine Gaming Mode interface, so use a visible in-game or SteamOS control when your build provides one.

Avoid applying several independent caps at once unless you have a reason to test their interaction. A game cap, a SteamOS cap and a display-side mode can compete or create an unexpected ceiling. Change one cap, observe frame-time behavior, and return to the previous value if the result is worse.
Compare a stable lower target with an unstable higher target
If the game alternates between two frame rates, a lower cap that it can hold consistently may feel smoother than an uncapped result with repeated drops. Do not select a fixed target without knowing the display’s refresh rate and the game’s actual workload; the correct comparison is the one your hardware can sustain in the problem scene.

What a current review example does—and does not—prove
In a 2026 PC Gamer review, the reviewer tested Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K with medium settings, ray tracing disabled, FSR set to Performance and 2x frame generation. The reported average was 58–61 FPS, while the underlying base frame rate was around 30 FPS. That configuration demonstrates why displayed FPS and base FPS must be distinguished, and why lower settings and FSR can be useful in a demanding title. It is one reviewer’s result on one hardware and software configuration, not a promise for every Steam Machine, game, display or SteamOS build.

Install updates, but verify the bug before naming it
Check for current SteamOS updates and patches for the affected game before deeper troubleshooting. Valve’s August 2022 Steam Deck release notes included fixes for random stutter and performance drops. That history shows that software can create—and later remove—performance regressions; it does not establish that the same defect exists on the current Steam Machine.
- Read the current SteamOS update notes for your device rather than relying on an old Steam Deck note.
- Read the game’s patch notes and known-issues list for the exact version installed.
- After updating, repeat the original scene with the same settings so that the result is comparable.
- Do not label a problem a known bug unless the current notes or support information actually identify it.
Separate network lag from local rendering problems
Lowering resolution, disabling ray tracing and changing frame caps affect local rendering. They cannot repair packet loss, a distant server, unstable Wi-Fi or another internet path problem. Suspect network delay when your own camera and animation remain smooth but other players teleport, hit registration arrives late, voice chat cuts out or the game reports a connection warning.
The available evidence does not establish a Steam Machine-specific network fix for this title. Use the affected game’s connection indicators and compare an offline or local mode with the online session. If only the online session exhibits delayed actions while the performance monitor remains stable, preserve your graphics settings and pursue the game, network and service-side diagnostics instead of treating it as low FPS.

If two or more unrelated games show the same low FPS or frame-time spikes after reversible settings, display and update checks, the problem is no longer safely attributable to one title. Document the evidence before contacting Steam Support:
- SteamOS version and the game versions tested.
- Display resolution and refresh rate.
- Whether the issue occurs in offline play, online play or both.
- Performance-monitor observations during a repeatable scene.
- Every setting changed and the result of each controlled comparison.
- Whether a second game reproduces the symptom.
Seek device-specific Steam Support guidance at that point. Do not substitute Windows-only hardware procedures for SteamOS instructions. A persistent multi-game problem may require support to distinguish a software regression from a hardware fault, and the reviewed official material does not provide a complete Steam Machine-specific diagnostic tree.
