The same number appears with unrelated games, so the reliable fix depends on the title, operating-system version, recent updates and security software.
Start with the low-risk steps: fully restart Steam and the computer, verify the game files, and install pending Steam and operating-system updates. Windows troubleshooting then focuses on drivers, OpenAL where a game uses it, security software, storage and memory. On macOS, a damaged or renamed executable inside the .app bundle often requires a clean reinstall or a title-specific launch option.

Steam can display this code after it has selected a game and attempted to create its process. The operating system declines, cannot find, or cannot execute the binary Steam requested. The number does not identify a universal root cause, a particular game engine or a specific hardware fault.

Because the code is shared, treat forum commands as title-specific workarounds. A launch option that fixes one game can point Steam at a nonexistent file in another.
Capture the details before changing files
Write down the information below. It prevents support staff from having to guess which executable and environment failed.
- Exact game title and whether it is a standard, beta or modded installation.
- Windows edition and build, or the macOS version number.
- For a Mac, whether the Mac uses Intel or Apple silicon.
- Steam client version and the date of the last Steam or game update.
- Whether the game ever launched successfully on this computer.
- Whether the failure affects one game or several.
- The complete wording of any second error, such as “Steam failed to start process” or “The application can’t be opened.”
- Steam and game logs, plus any message shown when launching the executable directly.
This record also distinguishes a client-wide problem from a single damaged game installation.

Low-risk fixes to try first
- Exit Steam completely. Use Steam’s Exit command, confirm it is no longer running, reopen it and try the game again.
- Restart the computer. A reboot clears a stuck process, file lock or pending driver change.
- Verify the installation. In Steam, open Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, select Installed Files (called Local Files in some older clients), then choose Verify integrity of game files. Let the scan finish before launching.
- Update Steam and the operating system. Install Steam’s client update when prompted. Apply current Windows or macOS updates, restart, and test again.
Verification replaces missing or altered files without deliberately changing saves. Cloud-saved data normally remains associated with the account, but titles with local-only saves should be backed up before a reinstall.
Windows: diagnose the process-start failure
Update drivers and check the game’s prerequisites
Install the current graphics, chipset and other hardware drivers offered for your Windows build, then restart. Steam troubleshooting identifies outdated drivers as a possible source of launch and crash problems. If the game folder contains an OpenAL installer, run the publisher-provided oalinst.exe from that folder and retry; this is relevant only to titles that ship OpenAL and is not a universal Steam repair.
Test security software without weakening the computer blindly
Antivirus, endpoint protection, firewalls, overlays and other background utilities can block or inject into a game executable. Check their quarantine and blocked-application histories first. If you understand the risk, create a narrowly scoped exception for the game executable or its folder and test once. Remove the exception if it makes no difference. Do not disable protection permanently or add a broad exception for the entire drive.

Check storage and memory when verification is clean
A successful file check does not prove that the drive or RAM is healthy. Steam’s guidance lists corrupted storage, memory faults and third-party software among conditions that can interfere with launching. Check the drive containing the Steam library with Windows’ built-in error-checking tools and run a standard Windows memory diagnostic. Back up important saves and personal files before any repair that reports disk errors.

Reinstall only after the non-destructive steps
If the same title still fails, uninstall it from Steam and install it again. Preserve local saves first; use the game’s documented save location or Steam Cloud when supported. Reinstalling is slower and consumes bandwidth, but it rebuilds missing dependencies and replaces files that verification may not have corrected.
macOS: repair the app bundle and executable path
Update, restart and verify
Install available Steam and macOS updates, restart the Mac, and run Steam’s Verify integrity of game files action. This is the safest first pass for both Intel and Apple-silicon Macs.

Reinstall after an update-related failure
If the game worked before a game update and then began showing 4294956486, reinstalling can rebuild the .app bundle and its internal executable path. Keep saves separately when the game stores them outside Steam Cloud. A clean bundle is especially useful when an update renamed or moved the Unix executable while Steam retained an older path.
Inspect the executable directory
For a title-specific diagnosis, open the game’s Game.app/Contents/MacOS/ directory. In Finder, control-click the app, choose Show Package Contents, then open Contents and MacOS. You can also list that directory in Terminal with:

Use the exact filename shown there when a publisher or a well-documented game-specific workaround tells you to set Steam Launch Options. The option consists of the executable path followed by %command%. Do not substitute a filename from another game, remove spaces, or copy a command that was not written for your title. Community reports describe this approach helping Civilization VI, but the required executable name differs by game.

Separate Steam problems from macOS execution problems
Try opening the game app outside Steam only as a diagnostic. If it opens directly but not through Steam, record the exact bundle and executable path and report it to the publisher; Steam may be retaining a stale path. If it fails both inside and outside Steam, investigate the binary’s signing, permissions, CPU architecture and compatibility with the installed macOS version rather than repeatedly changing launch options.

When to contact Steam or the game publisher
Escalate after restarting, verifying, updating and completing the platform-specific checks. Include the game name, exact error text, operating-system version and build, Mac architecture when applicable, Steam client version, update timeline, verification result, security-software findings and relevant logs. State whether direct launching works and provide the exact executable path only when the publisher requests it.
Steam can address client and service-file problems through client updates. A publisher is better positioned to correct a renamed binary, broken app bundle, missing runtime or game-specific launch requirement. Avoid deleting system folders, resetting permissions globally or using an unverified command simply because it appears in a forum.

- Keep Steam, the operating system and hardware drivers current.
- Allow game updates to finish before shutting down the computer.
- Keep reliable backups of local-only saves before reinstalling.
- Record a working executable path on macOS after major updates if the title has a history of bundle changes.
- Review security-software quarantine logs instead of permanently disabling protection.
- When a new update causes the failure, report the title, version and exact path problem to the publisher so it can correct the launch metadata.
