Steam’s “Corrupt Update Files” message does not identify a single cause and does not, by itself, mean your drive has failed. First check whether security software blocked or quarantined Steam game files; then address file-access problems and try Steam’s built-in download-cache option. Treat each step as a diagnostic attempt, not a guaranteed fix.
What the error means—and what it doesn’t
The message indicates Steam could not use update files as expected, but it is not a diagnosis of why. Facepunch Studios’ third-party support article describes antivirus software removing update files as one possible explanation for a game that repeatedly updates and validates. It also discusses related disk read/write and content-file-locked errors as possible file-access problems. Facepunch cautions that its suggested solutions “may or may not fix the problem.” Read Facepunch’s troubleshooting guidance.
That guidance is not a Valve support article, and the error alone does not show that a storage device is failing. Use the steps below to narrow down what is happening on your PC.

Note where the failure happens
Write down whether the error affects one game or several, and whether the affected games are installed on one library drive or more than one. This is not a fix, but it gives you useful context if the problem persists.

Close programs that may be using the game files
Exit the affected game and other programs that might have its files open. For related disk read/write or content-file-locked symptoms, Facepunch suggests restarting Steam or the PC. Try a restart before repeating the download.

Check security software logs
Review your antivirus or other security software’s logs and quarantine for Steam or game update files that were blocked or removed. Facepunch identifies antivirus interference as one possible cause. It mentions temporarily disabling antivirus as a diagnostic check; do not leave protection disabled. If you find a blocked file, use your security software’s controls and trusted vendor guidance rather than broadly weakening protection.

Clear Steam’s download cache
Steam’s client says clearing the download cache might resolve problems downloading or starting apps. In Steam, open Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache, then confirm. Steam warns that you will need to log in again. This is a reasonable attempt, not a guaranteed repair.

Back up local content before reinstalling
If the update-and-validation loop continues and you decide to reinstall the game, first back up any local user content you want to keep. Facepunch warns that a full game reinstall removes user content. Reinstalling is one documented option for that repeated loop, but it may not address every cause of a corrupt-update error.

Investigate recurring or location-specific failures
If errors recur across multiple games or only on one library location, note your operating system, filesystem, drive, and Steam client details. A ValveSoftware GitHub issue records one Arch Linux user’s report after changing a drive from NTFS to ext4: some games worked on another partition, and reinstalling Steam did not resolve that case. It is one user report, not proof of a general ext4 problem or a failing drive. See the ValveSoftware issue.
Other steps players report
Players have also reported trying library repair, changing the download region, and verifying game files. These may be reasonable troubleshooting attempts, but community reports do not establish that they reliably fix this specific error. When to seek more help
If the steps above do not help, gather the details you recorded and consult Steam Support for a Steam-client problem. Facepunch’s article directs Steam users to Steam Support for Steam issues. Avoid replacing a drive based on this message alone; investigate hardware only if you have separate evidence of a storage problem.
