Stop error 0x80005008 does not identify one universal Windows failure. It is a context-dependent HRESULT. Google Workspace Password Sync documents it as “One or more input parameters are invalid,” often when a user is outside the configured Active Directory base DN. IBM also records the value in WinAD account-provisioning logs, while an archived Microsoft IIS 6.0 article associates it with ADSI enumeration of a virtual-directory property. A genuine blue screen is a separate possibility.
Start by recording the complete message, the application or service that produced it, the operation being performed, your Windows version, and whether the computer actually displayed a stop screen. Then follow the matching branch below. Applying generic blue-screen fixes to an Active Directory parameter error can leave the real configuration problem untouched.

What 0x80005008 means
The hexadecimal value is an HRESULT reused by different Windows components. In Google Workspace Password Sync, the documented text is “One or more input parameters are invalid.” The usual cause is a directory-scope mismatch: the account being synchronized is not beneath the configured search base (base DN). IBM’s WinAD adapter documentation shows the same value during Active Directory account provisioning. An archived Microsoft Knowledge Base article documents it while IIS 6.0 uses ADSI to enumerate a virtual-directory property containing binary IPSecurity data.
Those examples have different remedies. A synchronization service needs its base DN, distinguished names, attributes, and permissions checked. An IIS or identity connector needs its own configuration and logs examined. A real Windows stop screen requires crash and driver troubleshooting. The code alone cannot tell you which case you have.

Identify the error surface before changing anything
- Capture the complete text. Copy the line containing 0x80005008 and any accompanying HRESULT, exception, event ID, account name, distinguished name, or stop-code parameters. A screenshot is useful if the message disappears after a restart.
- Name the emitting component. Note whether the message came from Google Workspace Password Sync, an Active Directory provisioning connector, IIS, Exchange, a custom .NET DirectoryServices application, Event Viewer, or a blue-screen display.
- Record the operation. Examples include password synchronization, account creation, group membership update, virtual-directory enumeration, application startup, or a system restart.
- Check whether Windows actually halted. A COM exception or service-log entry is not the same as a Windows stop screen. If the desktop remained usable and only an application logged the value, use the application branch. If Windows displayed a stop screen and restarted, use the stop-screen branch even if an application was active at the time.
- Write down recent changes. Include edits to organizational units, directory policies, connector settings, IIS virtual directories, drivers, firmware, hardware, and recently installed software. The timing helps separate a scope error from a system crash.
Choose the correct troubleshooting branch
| Triggering component | Error surface | First checks | Useful diagnostics |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Workspace Password Sync | Service or synchronization log; normally no blue screen | User location versus configured base DN; credentials and search settings | Password Sync log, user DN, test synchronization |
| Active Directory provisioning or WinAD adapter | Provisioning or connector log | Directory scope, DN syntax, attribute values, account permissions | Connector trace, AD audit events, provisioning account test |
| IIS/ADSI or another DirectoryServices application | Application exception while reading directory or virtual-directory data | Component configuration and the exact property being enumerated | Application log, IIS configuration backup, reproducible test |
| Windows stop screen | Blue screen, automatic restart, dump or BugCheck event | Recent hardware, Safe Mode, drivers, updates, firmware, disk space | Event Viewer, crash dump, WinDbg analysis |
Fix Google Workspace Password Sync errors
Google’s error table assigns 0x80005008 the meaning “One or more input parameters are invalid.” In this product, the most common scope problem is a user outside the configured base DN. Work through the checks in order so that you do not broaden directory access unnecessarily.
1. Compare the user DN with the configured base DN
- Open the Password Sync configuration on the server running the service and note the configured Active Directory base DN or search base.
- Obtain the affected user’s full distinguished name (DN), including its organizational-unit path and domain components. For example, a user in
OU=Players,OU=Staff,DC=example,DC=localis belowOU=Staff,DC=example,DC=local, but not below an unrelated OU. - Check every OU component from the user upward. The search base must be an ancestor of the user object for a subtree search to find it.
- Check spelling, commas, spacing, and the exact domain components. A typo can make a valid account appear to be outside the scope.
2. Test a broader top-level base DN
Google recommends trying a broader, top-level base DN instead of a narrower organizational-unit base when the account is outside the configured scope. Make the change during a controlled maintenance window, record the old value, and run a synchronization test with one affected account. A broader base can expose more directory objects to the connector, so use the narrowest ancestor that contains every account you intentionally synchronize.
3. Validate the service account and directory access
- Confirm that the configured bind account still exists and that its password has not expired or been changed without updating the service.
- Verify that the account can read the target OU and the attributes required by the synchronization operation.
- If the operation writes passwords or other values, confirm the delegated write permissions on the intended objects. Do not grant domain-wide administrative rights merely to make a test pass.
- Check whether inheritance or an OU-level access-control entry blocks the service account below the search base.
4. Inspect values that can make parameters invalid
Review the affected object’s DN, user name, mail or login attributes, and any group or domain mapping used by the synchronization rule. Compare a failing account with a known-good account in the same scope. Look for empty required values, illegal characters, duplicate identifiers, or a mapping that sends the account to an OU outside the configured base.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems5. Read the service log around one failed operation
Enable the product’s normal diagnostic logging if necessary, reproduce the failure with one account, and then turn verbose logging back down. The useful sequence is the selected search base, the account DN, the operation, the returned HRESULT, and any preceding directory error. Fix the first invalid value in that sequence rather than repeatedly retrying the same batch.

6. Retest without moving production objects
Use a test user in the intended OU and run a single synchronization. If it succeeds, test one previously failing account. Only then process a larger batch. If the same code appears for every account, suspect the base DN, bind credentials, or connector configuration. If only one object fails, compare that object’s DN and attributes with a successful object.
Fix Active Directory provisioning and WinAD connector errors
IBM documents 0x80005008 in WinAD account-provisioning logs. The code indicates that an input accepted by the connector or DirectoryServices layer is invalid; it does not identify which field. Use the connector’s own trace and the directory object involved.
Check directory scope and distinguished names
- Identify the provisioning operation and target object from the log entry.
- Confirm that the connector’s search base includes the target OU and that the target DN is syntactically correct.
- Check that the parent OU and domain components exist in the intended domain or forest.
- Verify that rename or move rules did not leave a stale DN in the connector database or mapping table.
Check mapped attributes
Compare the failing record with a successful record field by field. Pay particular attention to required account names, user-principal names, group references, object classes, and values that must be unique. Remove an invalid mapping or correct the source value, then retry only the affected record. Do not delete and recreate an account until you know whether the connector is failing before creation, during an update, or while resolving a reference.

Check provisioning permissions
Test the provisioning account against the exact OU and operation. Read access may be sufficient for discovery but not for account creation, password changes, or group updates. Review delegated permissions and inheritance at the target OU. A permission failure often has a more specific accompanying message; preserve that message instead of treating 0x80005008 as the complete diagnosis.

Use connector logs and directory auditing together
Correlate the connector timestamp with domain-controller or directory-service events. The connector log tells you which input it submitted; directory auditing can show whether the request reached the domain controller and which operation was rejected. After correcting the mapping or permission, rerun a single record and confirm that the connector records a successful result before resuming bulk provisioning.
Investigate IIS, ADSI, and custom DirectoryServices applications
The archived Microsoft IIS 6.0 documentation associates 0x80005008 with ADSI enumeration of a virtual-directory property containing binary IPSecurity data. This is an example of why a generic BSOD repair list is unsafe: the failure can be in an application’s attempt to read a particular directory property.
Preserve configuration and identify the property
- Back up the IIS configuration and record the site, application, and virtual directory being enumerated.
- Capture the full exception, stack trace, and operation that triggers the failure. Determine whether the application is listing virtual directories, reading security settings, or querying another ADSI property.
- Compare the failing virtual directory with a known-good directory on the same server. Note differences in authentication, authorization, and IP-security settings.
- Reproduce the error in a test copy or maintenance window. Avoid deleting a virtual directory or security setting from production merely because enumeration fails.
Repair the application-side configuration
Use the IIS or connector documentation for the exact version to correct the malformed or unsupported property. If a configuration value is binary or appears truncated, restore it from a known-good backup or recreate the setting through the supported management interface after documenting the original. For a custom .NET application, log the property name and the exact DirectoryServices call, then validate null, type, and encoding assumptions before changing directory data.
Escalate when the code is only a symptom
If the application log shows a different underlying COM or LDAP error immediately before 0x80005008, troubleshoot that earlier error. If the problem began after an IIS migration, schema change, or security-policy update, compare those changes in a staging environment. The value is not evidence that Windows itself needs a registry cleaner, reinstall, or replacement hardware.

When 0x80005008 appears on a genuine Windows stop screen
Microsoft describes a stop error (bug check) as a protective halt: when Windows encounters a condition that compromises safe operation, “the system halts.” Treat this as a separate branch from a directory-service HRESULT. Record the exact stop-screen text and all parameters before attempting repairs.
1. Prevent an immediate restart and capture evidence
- Open Settings > System > About > Advanced system settings.
- Under Startup and Recovery, select Settings and clear Automatically restart. Keep Write debugging information enabled so Windows can create a dump.
- Write down the stop code, parameter values, the file name shown on screen, and the time of the crash. In Event Viewer, open Windows Logs > System and look for BugCheck, Kernel-Power, and driver-related events at that time.
2. Remove recently added hardware
Shut down, disconnect newly installed USB devices, expansion cards, docks, or other hardware, and return internal components to their previous configuration. Test one change at a time. If the system becomes stable, reconnect devices individually to identify the trigger. Do not open a powered system or remove components unless you can do so safely and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
3. Start Windows in Safe Mode
- Hold Shift while selecting Restart, then choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- Press 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
- If the crash stops in Safe Mode, investigate recently installed drivers, services, and startup software rather than assuming the directory HRESULT caused the blue screen.
4. Inspect and roll back drivers
Open Device Manager and look for warning icons or a device added shortly before the crashes. Open the device’s Properties > Driver tab to check the provider, date, and version. If the problem began after an update, use Roll Back Driver when available. Otherwise obtain a current driver from the hardware or system manufacturer, install it, and restart. Keep a record of the previous version so you can reverse the change.

6. Check disk space and system health
Keep approximately 10–15% of the system drive free, an operational recommendation given by Microsoft for crash troubleshooting. Low space can prevent dump creation and updates. Remove only files you recognize, empty the Recycle Bin, or move personal data to approved storage. Then run the built-in Windows storage and system-health checks appropriate to your installation and review their results rather than deleting arbitrary system files.
7. Remove a recently installed program or driver package
In Safe Mode or normal Windows, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and uninstall software installed immediately before the first crash. For a driver package, use Device Manager’s uninstall option and select removal of the driver software only when you have a replacement or rollback plan. Restart and test after each change.
Analyze recurring crashes with dumps and WinDbg
Basic steps may not identify an intermittent stop error. Microsoft’s general crash-analysis guidance attributes approximately 70% of stop errors to third-party driver code, 10% to hardware, 5% to Microsoft code, and 15% to unknown causes. Those percentages describe general stop errors, not 0x80005008 specifically, and they are not a diagnosis of your computer.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Locate the dump
Windows commonly stores a small dump in C:WindowsMinidump and a kernel or complete dump at the location selected in Startup and Recovery. Copy the relevant file before using cleanup software. Keep the stop-screen parameters and Event Viewer timestamp with the file.
Open and inspect the dump
- Install WinDbg from Microsoft’s supported distribution and open the dump file.
- Allow symbols to load, then run
!analyze -v. - Review the bug-check parameters, probable cause, failing module, call stack, and loaded third-party drivers. A module named in the report is a lead, not proof; verify it against the driver version and the timing of the crashes.
- Compare multiple dumps. A repeated module and identical parameter pattern is stronger evidence than one isolated report.
Use the result to choose the next test
- If a third-party driver is implicated, roll it back or replace it with a manufacturer-provided version and test.
- If memory, storage, overheating, or power is suspected, run the relevant manufacturer or Windows diagnostic and check physical connections. Replace a component only after a repeatable test identifies it.
- If dumps point to different modules or cannot be created, investigate disk space, firmware, unstable overclocks, and hardware before blaming a single application.
What not to do
- Do not treat the hexadecimal value as proof of a blue screen. First establish which process emitted it.
- Do not broaden an Active Directory base DN permanently without checking which objects the connector will then be able to read or modify.
- Do not grant domain-administrator privileges as a shortcut for an unverified provisioning failure.
- Do not delete IIS virtual directories, directory objects, registry keys, or security settings without a backup and a tested recovery path.
- Do not buy a generic repair USB, RAM, SSD, or registry cleaner solely because 0x80005008 appeared. A physical replacement is justified only after diagnostics identify a hardware fault or a task-specific need.
- Do not assume antivirus software caused or can repair this HRESULT. Directory parameter errors and driver crashes require their respective diagnostic paths.
A practical decision checklist
- No blue screen, application or service log: follow the emitting product’s branch, starting with the full log entry and the operation that failed.
- Password synchronization failure: compare the user DN with the configured base DN, test a broader top-level base when appropriate, then verify credentials, permissions, and mapped attributes.
- Provisioning connector failure: validate scope, DN syntax, required and unique attributes, delegated permissions, and the connector’s trace.
- IIS or custom ADSI exception: back up configuration, identify the property being enumerated, compare with a known-good object, and apply the version-specific supported repair.
- Actual stop screen: capture parameters and dumps, remove recent hardware, use Safe Mode, inspect drivers, update Windows and firmware, maintain free disk space, and analyze recurring dumps in WinDbg.
Only after the context and diagnostics are clear should you decide whether the issue is a directory configuration error, an application-specific ADSI problem, or an unrelated Windows crash that happened at the same time.
