1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFixing stutter and low frame rates starts with identifying which problem you have. A frame rate that stays low usually points to a sustained CPU, GPU, memory, thermal, or settings limit; a brief pause or uneven frame delivery needs a different investigation. Check the specific game’s minimum requirements, close background applications, test demanding graphics settings one group at a time, and investigate shader compilation when the timing fits. These steps are reversible and should come before buying hardware.
Because no particular survival game, platform, or PC configuration is specified, the game-specific examples below are diagnostic clues rather than universal settings. Use the current support page for your title for exact menu names and procedures.

First, separate stuttering from consistently low FPS
“Low FPS” and “stuttering” often appear together, but they describe different symptoms. If the game remains near the same low frame rate whenever you play, the system may be continuously limited by CPU work, graphics workload, memory, cooling, or hardware below the game’s requirements. If the average frame rate looks acceptable but the image pauses, jerks, or suddenly becomes uneven, look for an event that coincides with each hitch: entering a new area, loading a world, an update, initial shader preparation, or another process running in the background.

- Does it happen from the first launch, only during the first minutes of a session, or after a game or graphics-driver update?
- Is it present in every world or save, or only in a particular new settlement, area, or session?
- Does lowering a demanding graphics option change the symptom, or does the hitch remain at nearly the same moments?
- Is the frame rate always low, or does it alternate between smooth play and short pauses?
These prompts do not prove a cause for an unnamed game. They tell you which branch of troubleshooting to test first and give you a useful record if you need the game’s support team.
Use this order of operations
- Check the game’s published requirements. Compare your processor, graphics hardware, memory, operating-system version, and available storage with the current minimum requirements for the exact edition and platform.
- Reduce background load. Close nonessential applications, then repeat the same in-game test.
- Change demanding settings in small groups. Start with view distance and shadows where those controls exist; use the title’s own labels.
- Consider both CPU and GPU limits. Lowering resolution is useful only when graphics workload is the limiting factor.
- Check shader instructions when the timing fits. Some games compile shaders during initial play or provide a cache-building menu.
- Measure again before spending money. Upgrade only after evidence identifies a specific bottleneck and the replacement is compatible.
Test one change at a time, or in a clearly defined small group, and use the same location and activity after each change. Otherwise you will not know which change helped.
Confirm the PC meets the exact game requirements
Official support guidance for Arma Reforger and Grounded directs players to check the game’s requirements when investigating performance. Apply that principle to your own title: open its current official requirements page and compare every listed component, not just the graphics card.
- Minimum versus recommended: A machine that meets only minimum requirements may run the game with reduced settings and a lower or less consistent frame rate. Requirements are not a guarantee of a particular FPS.
- Edition and platform: Requirements can differ between PC editions, storefront builds, or major updates. Use the page that matches your installed version.
- Unknown hardware: If you do not know the CPU, GPU, memory, or operating-system details, identify them before diagnosing the computer as underpowered. A missing specification is not evidence of a failing component.
Meeting the minimum does not rule out a game-specific problem, but failing to meet it makes settings and background checks less likely to deliver a stable result. Keep the requirements page’s date and version with your notes because support information changes.
Close background applications and repeat a controlled test
Bohemia Interactive includes closing background applications among its checks for low FPS and stuttering in Arma Reforger. This is a low-risk diagnostic step for other PC games as well: close programs you do not need, then reproduce the same scene or activity.

Do not change several unrelated things at once. Use a short routine such as loading the same save, walking the same route, or performing the same building action for each test. If the hitch disappears only when another application is closed, reopen programs individually to identify which one changes performance. If nothing changes, restore your normal setup and continue; a negative result is useful because it moves the investigation away from background load.
Lower demanding graphics settings one group at a time
Use the game’s graphics menu and make a small, documented change. Arma Reforger support specifically calls out view distance and shadows as settings to lower when troubleshooting performance. Fallout 76 support lists its own display, fade, and quality options. Those names are examples from those games, not a universal preset for every survival sandbox.
Test view distance or draw distance
Longer view distance can increase the amount of world geometry, objects, and simulation that must be prepared. Lower it one step, keep other options unchanged, and repeat the same test area. If the frame rate improves or hitches become less frequent, the setting is a useful performance lever. If the symptom does not change, return it to the previous value and test another group.
Test shadows and related quality controls
Shadows can be expensive to render. Lower the shadow quality or distance control provided by your game, then repeat the test. Fallout 76’s support instructions demonstrate why you should use that game’s own labels: “fade” and quality controls may be separate options, while another title may combine them.
Test resolution only when graphics workload is implicated
Microsoft’s Windows game guidance discusses GPU workload from resolution, fill rate, and shader demands, while also noting that CPU limits are common in games. Lowering resolution can therefore help a GPU-limited system, but it will not automatically fix a CPU-limited simulation or a hitch caused by shader preparation. Use resolution as one diagnostic comparison, not as a universal cure.

Keep a change log
Write down the original value, the new value, the test scene, and the result. A simple record prevents you from repeatedly changing the same option and helps you restore image quality after the cause is found. If a setting improves average FPS but introduces an unacceptable visual compromise, use that result as evidence of the bottleneck rather than treating it as the final configuration.

Check whether the CPU, GPU, or both are limiting performance
A survival sandbox can combine a large simulated world with heavy rendering. Microsoft’s developer guidance describes CPU-limited performance as common in games and separately discusses GPU work from resolution, fill rate, and shaders. That is why lowering every visual option is an incomplete diagnosis.
Signs that a CPU-side limit deserves attention
- The frame rate changes little when you lower resolution or other GPU-heavy options.
- Hitches occur while the game is preparing or simulating a busy area, rather than only when the view is filled with complex effects.
- Background activity or shader preparation coincides with the pauses.
These are indicators, not proof. Confirm with the game’s or operating system’s performance information when available, and compare repeatable tests.
Signs that graphics workload deserves attention
- Lowering resolution or a graphics-heavy option produces a clear improvement in the same scene.
- Performance falls mainly when looking toward dense scenery, effects, or long distances.
- The game’s requirements identify graphics hardware near or above your system’s capability, but the exact limit still needs measurement.
A mixed limit is possible. For example, lowering shadows may improve rendering while a busy settlement still produces CPU-side hitches. Keep the two types of change separate in your notes.
Investigate shader compilation when the timing matches
Shader compilation can temporarily affect performance in supported games. AMD explains that its background shader compilation is CPU-bound and that performance may be reduced until compilation finishes. For affected titles, AMD recommends allowing approximately 15 minutes of gameplay before capturing measurements. That is a vendor recommendation for the software and supported titles described by AMD, not a universal timer for every game.

If the stutter began on first launch or after a relevant update, check the game developer’s current shader and cache instructions before changing unrelated settings. A cache may be rebuilt automatically, during a loading process, or through a menu specific to that title. Do not use another game’s menu path simply because it has a similar name.
A game-specific cache-building example
Square Enix documents a menu procedure for building a shader cache in one supported game and says that procedure can take 35 to 90 minutes depending on PC specifications. That range belongs to the specific game and procedure described by Square Enix. It is not a general waiting period for survival games, and it does not establish that your title has the same menu or duration.
While a cache is being built, follow the title’s instructions and allow the process to finish if the developer says it is required. Afterward, repeat the same scene and compare frame delivery. If your game has no official cache guidance, do not invent a cache-clearing or precompilation sequence; use its support page instead.
Use game-specific support examples correctly
The following examples show how official instructions differ. They are diagnostic references, not a universal settings list.

| Arma Reforger — Bohemia Interactive | Check requirements, close background applications, and lower view distance and shadows for low FPS or stuttering. | Use the same categories as tests in your game, but follow your game’s labels and current support instructions. |
| Fallout 76 — Bethesda | Use the game’s display, fade, and quality settings as part of its performance checks. | Treat these as examples of title-specific controls, not a recommended preset for another game. |
| Grounded | Check the published system requirements. | Verify requirements for your exact title and edition before concluding that hardware is insufficient. |
| AMD-supported affected titles | Background shader compilation is CPU-bound; allow approximately 15 minutes of gameplay before measuring in the described cases. | Use this timing only when the game and driver behavior match AMD’s guidance. |
| Square Enix-supported title | A documented shader-cache procedure takes 35–90 minutes depending on PC specifications. | Follow the procedure only for that title or when your own developer provides an equivalent instruction. |
Choose the next step from the symptom pattern
| Observed pattern | First checks | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Low FPS in every session | Requirements, background applications, then CPU- and GPU-related settings separately. | A consistent limit is more likely than a one-time loading event, but the limiting component still needs confirmation. |
| Short hitches during initial play | Check the developer’s shader-compilation or cache instructions; allow the vendor-recommended preparation time when applicable. | Timing connected to preparation may be temporary and game-specific. |
| Stutter after a patch or driver change | Record the change and read the current game and driver support notes before applying another game’s fix. | The timing is a clue, not proof of a particular cause. |
| Hitches only in a busy world area | Compare view distance, shadows, and other CPU- or GPU-related settings while repeating the same route. | The area may expose a workload limit that lighter scenes do not. |
| No change after lowering resolution | Test CPU-side workload, view distance, shadows, background applications, and shader timing. | The game may not be primarily GPU-limited at that moment. |
When an upgrade is justified—and when it is not
The title, hardware configuration, and measurements needed to select an upgrade are not specified. Do not buy a graphics card, processor, memory kit, solid-state drive, cooling part, or performance utility merely because the game stutters. Microsoft’s guidance identifies more than one kind of limit, and Bethesda’s game-specific settings illustrate that software configuration matters too.

Consider hardware only after you have:
- Compared the exact game requirements with your system.
- Repeated a controlled test with unnecessary background applications closed.
- Tested relevant CPU- and GPU-related settings separately.
- Checked current shader instructions when the symptom’s timing suggests compilation.
- Collected enough evidence to identify a particular component or condition as the constraint.
Then verify compatibility, power, cooling, memory capacity, storage space, and the game’s requirements for the replacement system. If the evidence points to more than one possible limit, postpone the purchase until you can distinguish them. An indiscriminate upgrade can leave the real cause untouched.
Common mistakes that prolong troubleshooting
Changing every setting at once
A new “low” preset may improve performance, but it tells you which control mattered. Change a small group, record the result, and restore options that had no effect.
Assuming lower resolution fixes every stutter
Resolution primarily tests graphics workload. CPU-limited simulation, background work, and shader compilation can continue to hitch at a lower resolution.

Applying another game’s cache procedure
Shader menus and cache behavior are game- and driver-dependent. Use the developer’s instructions for the installed title; the Square Enix procedure and its 35–90 minute range cannot be generalized.
Measuring before preparation finishes
AMD’s approximately 15-minute guidance applies to affected titles using its described background compilation behavior. Measuring before that process completes can misrepresent steady performance, but waiting 15 minutes is not a guarantee for an unrelated game.
Diagnosing from missing specifications
If the PC’s hardware or the game’s requirements are unknown, gather those facts first. “It feels underpowered” is not enough evidence to recommend a component.
Quick Recap
A concise repeatable checklist
- Write down whether the symptom is constant low FPS, intermittent hitching, or both.
- Note whether it began after first launch, an update, a driver change, a settings change, or a new world/session.
- Open the exact game’s current requirements and compare the complete PC specification.
- Close nonessential background applications and repeat the same test route.
- Lower view distance or shadows when those controls exist, testing each small group separately.
- Test resolution or other graphics-heavy controls to distinguish GPU workload from CPU-side limits.
- Read the game’s own shader-compilation and cache instructions if timing points there.
- For AMD-described affected titles, allow approximately 15 minutes of gameplay before measuring; do not generalize that timer.
- For the specific Square Enix procedure, expect 35–90 minutes according to PC specifications; do not apply that range to another game.
- Only after these checks identify a bottleneck should you investigate a compatible hardware upgrade.
