Test another game before deciding whether the fault is specific to Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy or points to the console or its storage.
A clean system-memory redownload is the most important test for persistent stutter, crashes, or damaged-looking graphics. If several games remain affected after updates and a restart, Nintendo says the console needs repair. If only this game still fails after a clean reinstall, escalate to Nintendo support and the game’s publisher or licensee; do not assume an accessory will fix it.

| What you see | First checks | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
| Brief stutter, slowdown, or irregular image | Update Switch 2, update the game, restart, then check the installation | A software update or damaged downloaded data may be involved |
| “There was a problem, and the software needed to close” | Restart, update both layers of software, scan for corrupted data, then redownload to system memory | Nintendo’s crash procedure calls for a clean software installation if the error returns |
| Missing, scrambled, distorted, or blurry textures | Update and restart; determine whether the problem affects one title or several | A single-game fault points to that game’s card or downloaded data; several games point toward the console or storage path |
| The same problem in multiple games | Complete the update and restart checks, then contact Nintendo for service | Nintendo states that a problem persisting with all games requires console repair |
Do not jump straight to buying a new card, cooler, or other accessory. Nintendo’s documented process is to check software, reseat or remove storage as appropriate, and redownload; the supplied evidence does not establish an accessory as a remedy.

Before troubleshooting: identify your installation
Note whether you are launching the game from a physical game card or from downloaded software. The checks overlap, but the physical-card path includes a reseat, while a digital installation can be rebuilt directly to system memory.
- Physical copy: you will need to power the console off before removing and reinserting the game card.
- Downloaded copy: the decisive test is a deletion and redownload to system memory, with the microSD Express card removed during the download.
- Either format: have the console connected to the internet for updates and be prepared to test another game afterward.
Keep the symptom description precise. Record whether the problem is a frame-rate-like hitch, an unexpected close, or a visual asset that is missing or deformed. Also note whether it happens only in this title or in every game you try. That comparison determines whether you should continue repairing the installation or move to console service.
Step-by-step repair procedure
1. Install the latest Switch 2 system update
Open System Settings and run the console’s system update. Allow the update to finish before launching the game again. This is Nintendo’s first step for lag, crashes, and visual irregularities because the operating system and the game run together; testing an old system build can make later results misleading.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
After the system update completes, return to the HOME Menu rather than immediately assuming the title has also been updated. The game has its own update check.
2. Update the game from its HOME Menu icon
- Highlight Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy on the HOME Menu.
- Open the game’s options and choose Software Update.
- Select Via the Internet.
- Wait for the check and installation to finish, then launch the game again.
Nintendo’s procedures call for both console and affected-software updates. Completing only one leaves an untested combination in place. If no update is offered, continue with the remaining checks rather than treating that absence as proof that the installation is healthy.

3. Restart the console normally
Hold the POWER button for at least three seconds. Choose Power Options, then Restart. A restart clears the current running session and gives the newly updated system a fresh launch.
If the console does not respond to the normal menu, Nintendo documents a forced shutdown: hold the POWER button for 12 seconds. After it powers off, turn it on normally and retry the game. Use the forced shutdown only when the system is unresponsive; a normal restart is the preferred first check.

4. Scan the installed software for corrupted data
For a downloaded copy, use the built-in data check:
- Open System Settings.
- Choose Data Management.
- Select Manage Software.
- Choose Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.
- Select Scan for Corrupted Data and let the check complete.
The scan is particularly relevant when a crash returns or when textures are missing, scrambled, or blurry. It checks the installed data without asking you to guess which file might be damaged. If corruption is reported, follow the console’s prompt and then retest. If the scan finds nothing but the symptom continues, proceed to the clean redownload; an apparently clean scan does not eliminate every installation or storage-path problem.
5. Rebuild the game in system memory
Nintendo’s persistent-problem procedure is to delete the affected software and redownload it directly to system memory. For this test, remove the microSD Express card during the redownload so the game is not relying on the same external storage path.

- Power the console off completely.
- Remove the microSD Express card.
- Turn the console back on.
- Delete Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy from the software-management controls.
- Redownload the game while it is directed to the console’s system memory, not the microSD Express card.
- Install any offered software update before launching.
- Restart once more if the installation or update requests it, then test the same scene or activity that exposed the problem.
This is a diagnostic comparison as well as a reinstall. If stutter, crashes, or damaged textures disappear in system memory, the earlier downloaded data or storage path was implicated. If the identical fault remains in a clean system-memory installation, the evidence is stronger for a title-specific problem or a console issue, depending on what other games do.
The procedure changes the installed software, so do not interrupt the download or remove power while it is being written. The supplied Nintendo guidance does not identify a separate graphics setting, cooling accessory, or performance mode as a fix; the supported test is the clean redownload itself.
6. Reseat a physical game card
If you own the card version, shut the console down before handling the card.
- Power the Switch 2 off.
- Remove the game card.
- Reinsert it firmly.
- Turn the console on and check for a software update from the game’s HOME Menu options.
- Launch the game and reproduce the symptom.
Nintendo includes card removal and reinsertion in its lag and visual-problem procedure because a poor connection can prevent the title from reading its data consistently. If the problem continues, compare the card-based result with another game card. Do not treat a reseat as a permanent fix if the same behavior returns.
7. Test another game
Use a different installed or card-based game and play long enough to see whether it stutters, closes, or displays corrupted graphics. This comparison is essential:

- Only Guardians of the Galaxy fails: after the updates, scan, card check or clean system-memory redownload, the remaining evidence is specific to this title’s data, card, or software compatibility. Contact the game’s publisher or licensee and Nintendo support for the next supported step.
- Several games fail in the same way: the pattern points away from one title and toward the console or its storage path. Nintendo recommends repair escalation when the issue persists with all games.
- The test game works normally: continue evaluating the affected title after the clean installation rather than replacing unrelated hardware.
Fixing each symptom without mixing the cases
Stuttering, slowdowns, or an irregular image
Start with the system update, game update, and normal restart. If the hitching remains, scan downloaded data. A physical-card owner should also power off and reseat the card. The next supported test is a deletion and redownload to system memory with the microSD Express card removed.
After that redownload, repeat the same in-game action that produced the hitch. A result that improves only in system memory implicates the earlier data location or its contents. If the hitch appears in multiple games even after their software is current, stop treating it as a Guardians of the Galaxy-only issue and arrange Nintendo service.
Unexpected closes and the exact error message
Nintendo’s crash sequence is specific to the message “There was a problem, and the software needed to close.” Restart first, then update the console and the affected software. Run Scan for Corrupted Data from System Settings > Data Management > Manage Software > the game. If the close returns, remove the microSD Express card and redownload the game to system memory.
A forced 12-second shutdown is reserved for a console that will not respond to the normal restart controls. If the same error remains after the clean installation, test another game. A failure limited to this title should be escalated to the publisher or licensee and Nintendo support; a failure across games meets Nintendo’s repair condition.

If one downloaded game continues to show the visual fault after a clean installation, Nintendo’s guidance points toward service rather than an unverified accessory. If several games show similar corruption, treat it as a console-level issue and contact Nintendo for repair instructions.
Physical card versus digital installation
| Installation type | Storage-specific action | Follow-up test |
|---|---|---|
| Physical game card | Power off, remove and reinsert the card, then check Software Update > Via the Internet | Play the same section again and test another card-based or downloaded game |
| Downloaded software | Use Scan for Corrupted Data; if needed, remove the microSD Express card and redownload to system memory | Reproduce the symptom before adding the microSD Express card back |
The two paths should not be combined casually. A card reseat does not rebuild downloaded files, and a digital redownload does not test the physical connector. Choose the branch that matches how your copy is installed, then use the cross-game test to decide whether the console itself needs attention.
When to stop troubleshooting and request service
Contact Nintendo support when the same lag, crash, or visual corruption persists across games after updates and a restart. Nintendo’s stated conclusion for an issue that persists with all games is that the console needs repair.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsContact the game’s publisher or licensee as well as Nintendo support when the fault remains limited to Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy after the relevant card check or a clean system-memory redownload. Describe the edition (card or download), the exact symptom, whether corrupted data was found, and the result of the other-game test. That information distinguishes a title-specific installation problem from a broader hardware or storage fault.
Do not infer a confirmed game patch from forum posts or isolated reports. The checked Nintendo Switch 2 compatibility listing did not establish a Guardians of the Galaxy-specific patch or a confirmed title-specific fix. Online accounts may help you recognize a symptom, but they are anecdotal until a dated Nintendo or publisher update confirms the change.
Quick Recap
