To fix stuttering, FPS drops, or delayed-feeling controls in VALORANT, first check the game’s instability indicators and performance graphs. They help separate low client FPS from network trouble—two problems that can feel similar but need different fixes. If neither points to a cause, note whether the issue starts after Alt+Tab or as your PC heats up before changing settings.
Start by identifying what is dropping
In VALORANT, open Settings > General > Other > Instability Indicators and enable the relevant indicators. Then open Settings > Video > Stats to display performance graphs, including client FPS, frame time, ping, and packet loss.
Riot says the indicators describe network or game conditions, and their thresholds can vary by region or patch. A warning that flashes briefly and disappears may not need action; frequent or persistent warnings are more useful clues. Look for what changes at the same moment the game feels wrong:
- Client FPS falls or frame time rises: investigate PC performance.
- Ping or packet loss rises: investigate the connection.
- Neither changes: check whether the issue follows Alt+Tab, heat, or background activity.

If client FPS drops or the game stutters
Reduce competition for PC resources
Close other running applications that may be competing with VALORANT. Make one change at a time, then check whether client FPS and frame time improve during the same situation that caused the slowdown.
Check whether the system is GPU-bound or CPU-bound
Use VALORANT’s performance graphs to investigate whether the GPU or CPU is the limiting factor before lowering settings. That distinction can keep you from changing options that are unlikely to help.

Test lower graphics settings
For low client FPS, Riot recommends testing lower Material Quality, Texture Quality, Detail Quality, and UI Quality. While diagnosing, you can also try disabling Improve Clarity, Experimental Sharpening, Bloom, Distortion, and Cast Shadows. Compare the graphs after each group of changes rather than assuming one setting is responsible.
Check drivers, Windows, and graphics overrides
Check that Windows and your graphics drivers are current. If you have changed settings in your GPU control panel, consider restoring its defaults: a graphics profile can override settings chosen inside a game. Look for heat-related slowdowns
If performance worsens as the PC heats up, inspect ventilation and dust buildup. Clear dust that is visibly obstructing airflow. Riot also suggests trying a frame-rate cap below the average FPS you observe; treat this as a diagnostic adjustment, not a guaranteed fix.
If ping or packet loss points to the network
Low client FPS is a PC-performance symptom; ping and packet loss point toward the connection. Enable the incoming and outgoing packet-loss graphs and watch them alongside ping when the problem occurs. Riot says high-quality wireless and most wired connections should have near-zero packet loss.

- Restart the router and other network devices. Check whether the indicators change afterward.
- Check ping to other internet sources. This can help determine whether the connection problem extends beyond VALORANT.
- Try a wired connection if possible. This is a useful comparison when wireless is implicated, not a general fix for every stutter.
- If packet loss persists, investigate the router’s diagnostics or contact your internet service provider.

Why high FPS can still feel delayed
FPS, frame time, and network conditions can affect how responsive the game feels, so a high average FPS does not rule out network instability or intermittent frame problems. Riot’s Gameplay Technology team described issues that could occur after network instability, low client framerate, Alt+Tab, or extended high jitter, and said they could make inputs feel delayed on the server or enemy movement appear delayed on screen. Its explanation is useful context, not proof that any one of those conditions is causing your symptom.
Riot also explains that the client predicts local movement for responsiveness while the server remains authoritative; when their states disagree, the client may need to correct what it shows. In a 2022 technical article, Riot said VALORANT’s server updates the game simulation 128 times per second. That is technical context, not a setting players can change.
