One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFortnite stutter is uneven frame delivery, not simply a low FPS number. Start by checking whether the hitch is local rendering or network lag, then verify the game files, test rendering modes, and investigate shader compilation if DirectX 12 is much worse. Change one thing at a time and judge the result by frame-time consistency, not just average FPS.
First, identify what kind of stutter you have
A brief freeze can come from graphics, the network, or input/display behavior. The fix depends on which symptom you see.
- Frame-time stutter: Motion briefly jerks or freezes even though the FPS counter stays high. A frame-time graph, if available, can reveal spikes hidden by average FPS.
- Low FPS: The frame rate stays below your display’s refresh rate. This points more toward sustained CPU or GPU limits, settings, or power and thermal constraints.
- FPS drops: The counter falls sharply during fights, while landing, entering an area, or looking toward dense builds. Note whether the same scene reliably triggers it.
- Network hitching: Players teleport, actions register late, or movement feels delayed while local rendering remains smooth. Compare the game’s network indicators, including ping and packet loss, with the moment of the hitch; test a wired connection or stable Wi-Fi.
- Input or display latency: The image looks smooth but controls feel delayed. This is not necessarily a stutter; display synchronization and input settings may be relevant.
- Shader-compilation stutter: Short hitches occur when effects or areas appear, often after a game or driver update, switching rendering modes, or clearing a cache.
Before changing anything, record the rendering mode, resolution and 3D resolution, display refresh rate, FPS cap, V-Sync and variable-refresh settings, Reflex or Anti-Lag setting, upscaling or ray tracing settings, CPU and GPU temperatures, RAM use, and whether Fortnite is installed on an SSD or hard drive. Also note whether the hitch is repeatable in one place, happens only in the first match, worsens over time, or occurs in other games. This baseline makes it possible to tell whether a change helped.
Use this low-risk troubleshooting order
- Restart Fortnite and the PC, then reproduce the problem in the same type of situation.
- Check that the PC meets Epic’s Fortnite system requirements. If hardware is below minimum requirements, software tweaks may not make gameplay smooth.
- Verify Fortnite’s files in the Epic Games Launcher.
- Update the graphics driver if it is old or relevant to a known game issue. If the stutter began immediately after a driver update, test a rollback instead.
- Compare Fortnite’s rendering modes. Allow time for shader compilation after changing modes.
- If DX12 repeatedly hitches, clear only the relevant GPU shader-cache contents using the instructions below, then give the game time to rebuild them.
- Check GPU selection, background applications, temperatures, memory pressure, storage, and FPS stability.
- Only after these checks, consider launcher-cache clearing, a clean driver reinstall, another drive, or support.
Verify Fortnite’s files and graphics driver
Verify the game installation
- Open the Epic Games Launcher and select Library.
- Find Fortnite and click its three-dot menu, or right-click the game.
- Select Manage, then Verify.
- Wait for verification to finish before launching the game. Epic notes that this may take several minutes, depending on the game’s size.
Verification can repair damaged or missing installation files; it does not repair a shader cache, overheating, network instability, or a CPU or GPU limit. See Epic’s file-verification and PC troubleshooting guidance.

Update carefully
Use the graphics-card maker’s driver page rather than a third-party driver updater: NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel. Laptop owners should check the laptop maker’s validated driver too; a generic vendor driver is not always the right choice for every system.
A normal update is the sensible first step when the driver is outdated. If the issue started directly after a new driver, test returning to the previous known-good version. A clean driver removal tool is a later troubleshooting measure, not a routine requirement.
Compare Performance Mode and DirectX 12
Neither rendering mode is universally smoother. Performance Mode is intended to reduce graphical load, particularly on lower-end hardware, but it lowers visual fidelity and may not improve frame pacing on every modern PC. DX12 may work well on one configuration and repeatedly hitch on another.
Try Performance Mode
- Open Fortnite and the top-left menu.
- In Display options, set Rendering Mode to Performance – Lower Graphical Fidelity.
- Select Apply and restart Fortnite.
Epic’s Performance Mode instructions also describe an option to remove high-resolution textures. The support page says this can save more than 14 GB and reduce the installation to approximately 17 GB; those are the page’s stated storage figures, not a guaranteed frame-time improvement. Removing the textures trades texture quality and storage use, not a proven stutter cure.
Compare modes fairly
After a mode change, test more than one match and use a repeatable situation. The first session can hitch while shaders are compiled. If Performance Mode is smoother, it may be a better fit for that PC. If DX12 is much worse across sessions, use the mode that delivers steadier frame times while you troubleshoot DX12 rather than assuming it is inherently superior.
Epic’s troubleshooting page also currently instructs users facing DX12 crashes, freezing, or black screens to add -d3d12 -es31 in Epic Games Launcher Settings > expand Fortnite > enable Additional Command Line Arguments, then launch. The same page describes this as switching to Performance Mode, although the argument includes -d3d12; check the labels and behavior in your current Fortnite build before treating it as a general mode switch. Do not stack undocumented launch arguments from optimization guides. See Epic’s current graphics troubleshooting instructions.
Clear the shader cache only for a likely DX12 cache problem
Epic documents a DX12 failure mode in which Fortnite repeatedly recompiles shaders and stutters heavily. A cache reset is worth testing when the problem is substantially worse in DX12, started after a game or driver update or mode change, or appears repeatedly as new areas and effects load. It is not a universal fix for low FPS, thermals, or network lag.
Reset the relevant cache contents
- Close Fortnite, the Epic Games Launcher, and GPU utilities or overlays. If files remain locked, reboot and try again.
- Open the cache location for your GPU vendor. Epic’s DX12 cache instructions list NVIDIA folders involving
PerDriverVersionDXCacheand another NVIDIADXCachelocation, and AMD’s%LOCALAPPDATA%AMDDxCacheplus another AMD cache location under AppData. Folder names can differ by driver; do not create a missing folder. - Delete the contents of the applicable cache folder, not its parent folder. Skip files Windows says are in use.
- Relaunch Fortnite and allow shaders to rebuild before deciding whether the reset worked.
NVIDIA’s separate shader-cache guidance lists manual locations including %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalNVIDIADXCache, %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalNVIDIAGLCache, and %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalNVIDIA CorporationNV_Cache. Its procedure also involves temporarily setting Shader Cache Size to Off in the NVIDIA App, rebooting, deleting cache contents, restoring the setting to Driver Default, then restarting again. Follow that vendor procedure only if you need the broader NVIDIA cache reset; it is distinct from deleting Fortnite’s game files.

Clearing a cache does not uninstall Fortnite, and permanently disabling shader caching is not the goal. The first match after a reset may still stutter while shaders are rebuilt, as Epic warns. Do not keep deleting the cache after each match.
Make sure the game uses the intended GPU
This check matters especially on laptops and PCs with both integrated and discrete graphics. Epic’s GPU-selection instructions give these vendor paths, whose labels can change:
- NVIDIA: Right-click the desktop, open NVIDIA Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings, select Fortnite, and choose the high-performance GPU.
- AMD: Open Radeon Settings or the current AMD graphics application, find Switchable Graphics or Graphics Settings, select Fortnite, and choose High Performance.
- Windows: If the game still uses integrated graphics, check Settings > System > Display > Graphics. The exact interface can vary by Windows release.
If settings keep reverting or Performance Mode will not stay enabled, inspect %LOCALAPPDATA%FortniteGameSavedConfigWindowsClient. Make a backup before changing configuration files. Right-click GameUserSettings.ini, select Properties, uncheck Read-only, and select Apply. Do not edit unrelated values blindly; permissions, cloud sync, or security software can also affect saved settings.
Reduce load without blindly setting everything to Low
Epic recommends testing Quality Presets: Low and 3D Resolution: 100% as a troubleshooting baseline. Change one setting at a time from there to identify the bottleneck; 100% 3D resolution preserves the selected rendering resolution rather than scaling it down.
- If the GPU is the sustained limit, reduce resolution or demanding visual effects and disable ray tracing if enabled.
- If hitches coincide with complex scenes or fights, test lower view distance, effects, shadows, and meshes to reduce scene and CPU load.
- If video memory is constrained, reduce texture quality.
- After each change, compare the same scenario and frame-time behavior. Do not infer improvement from the lobby or an empty Creative island alone.
Stabilize frame delivery and test background software
Use a sustainable FPS cap
An uncapped frame rate that swings between a high peak and a sharp drop can feel less consistent than a lower cap the system can hold in busy matches. Test a cap below the monitor’s refresh rate if you use variable refresh rate (VRR), but there is no universal Fortnite cap or mandatory rule to set it a fixed number below refresh. Compare frame-time consistency and responsiveness under your display’s actual VRR and synchronization settings.
Epic lists turning V-Sync off in its NVIDIA-control-panel troubleshooting configuration. That can reduce synchronization delay in some setups, but may introduce visible tearing; with VRR, the useful combination depends on display and driver settings. Test it rather than treating it as a universal stutter remedy. NVIDIA Low Latency Mode set to Ultra is also listed in Epic’s guidance, but its benefit depends on the game and configuration and is not a promise of more FPS or lower latency.
Temporarily remove background competition
Epic identifies background applications as a possible performance cause. Test with overlays and resource-heavy tools closed, including Discord overlay, Xbox Game Bar, GPU recording overlays, browser video, RGB or motherboard utilities, third-party FPS counters, cloud sync, antivirus scans, and streaming or recording software. Re-enable applications one at a time to identify a conflict; do not permanently disable security software or use broad antivirus exclusions.
Check requirements, memory, storage, heat, and power
Epic cautions that software tweaks may not solve the problem if a device does not meet Fortnite’s minimum requirements. A constrained CPU or GPU, insufficient system memory, integrated graphics doing work intended for a dedicated GPU, or a slow or nearly full drive can all limit smoothness. The exact impact depends on the system and settings.

Epic says an SSD or 6 GB or more of RAM can reduce hitches on older machines. The 6 GB figure is older-hardware guidance, not a current universal target for a Windows gaming PC running Fortnite alongside Windows, voice chat, browsers, and capture software. An SSD may reduce asset-loading hitches, but it cannot fix CPU-bound frame-time spikes, overheating, drivers, or network problems. Keep adequate free drive space for Windows, updates, caches, and temporary files.
If the game is smooth at first but worsens after 30–90 minutes, prioritize CPU and GPU temperatures, fan operation, laptop heat-soak, power mode, airflow, and memory pressure. Epic notes that problems appearing only after extended play can indicate overheating; check for blocked vents, dust, and poor ventilation. Temperature limits differ by processor and graphics-card model, so use the manufacturer’s specifications rather than a single universal threshold. A high-performance laptop power mode may improve sustained performance but can increase heat, fan noise, and battery drain.

Epic’s general troubleshooting sequence includes clearing the Epic Games Launcher cache after file verification. Because cache paths and folder names can change, follow Epic’s current launcher-cache procedure rather than deleting guessed folders.
If the problem persists, consider a clean graphics-driver installation, testing Fortnite from another drive, checking the drive for errors, or resetting local Fortnite configuration after backing it up. Reinstalling the launcher or Fortnite is a later step, not a first fix; it may not address shader-cache, thermal, hardware, or network problems. Epic’s escalation guidance also covers running the launcher as administrator and contacting the hardware maker. Avoid registry cleaners, debloat scripts, timer tools, and disabling security features as routine Fortnite optimizations.
If a problem appears immediately after a Fortnite update and affects only Fortnite, a game-side regression is possible; a local reinstall may not resolve it. Check Epic’s official support or status channels before making major system changes. If you contact support, include your PC or console model, Windows version where applicable, GPU and driver version, rendering mode, settings baseline, when the issue began, whether it occurs in other games, and whether FPS, frame time, ping, or packet loss changes during a hitch.
Console players
Windows shader-cache paths, PC drivers, and GPU-selection controls do not apply to consoles. Restart Fortnite and the console, install available game and system updates, check that storage has adequate free space, and confirm the display is using the intended refresh or game mode. Reinstall Fortnite only if simpler steps fail; if the issue is network-related, test the connection rather than changing graphics settings.
When a visual change is not stutter
Competitive modes such as Ranked and tournaments restrict play to a 16:9 aspect ratio, according to Epic’s graphics guidance. Black bars in those modes may therefore be expected and are not evidence of frame-time stutter.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Fortnite stutter only in the first match?
A mode or driver change, update, or cache reset can trigger shader compilation. The first match may hitch while shaders rebuild; test subsequent matches before judging the change.

Should I use DX12 or Performance Mode?
Test both on your system. Performance Mode reduces graphical fidelity and may help lower-end hardware, while DX12 can behave differently across drivers and PCs. Choose the mode with steadier frame times after allowing shaders to compile.
Does clearing the shader cache delete Fortnite?
No. It removes cached shader data, not the game installation. Fortnite rebuilds that data, and the first match may hitch.
Why is Fortnite stuttering with high FPS?
Average FPS can hide frame-time spikes. Check a frame-time graph, shader compilation, unstable uncapped FPS, CPU scheduling, background applications, VRR/V-Sync behavior, and temperatures.
Can an SSD fix Fortnite stutter?
It may reduce asset-loading hitches on a slow drive, but it will not fix CPU or GPU limits, overheating, shader problems, or network lag.
Should I disable V-Sync?
It is worth testing, not a universal rule. Disabling it can reduce synchronization delay but may cause tearing; results depend on your display and VRR setup.
Why does Fortnite stutter after playing for a while?
Check CPU and GPU temperatures, airflow, laptop power behavior, memory pressure, and background applications that may start during a session.
Does reinstalling Fortnite fix stutter?
Sometimes damaged installation data is involved, but verify files and test drivers, rendering modes, and relevant caches first. Reinstallation will not necessarily fix thermal, driver, shader-cache, hardware, or network causes.
