How to Fix the 0x80070057 SCCM Code Error

0x80070057 means “The parameter is incorrect,” but it does not identify one SCCM (Configuration Manager) defect. First verify that the message is really 0x80070057 rather than the often-mistyped 0x0070057. Then identify the task-sequence step, deployment type, or software-update phase that failed, read the log for that stage, and apply a repair that matches the evidence. A Windows Update cache reset, System File Checker, or the Windows Update troubleshooter can help when the logs point to Windows servicing; those steps are not universal fixes for every SCCM occurrence.

Verify the error code before troubleshooting

Check the complete error text in the task-sequence progress window, Software Center, Configuration Manager console, or the relevant log. Microsoft documentation uses the eight-digit HRESULT 0x80070057 and describes it as The parameter is incorrect. The shorter-looking string 0x0070057 is missing an 8 and is not mapped by the available Microsoft guidance to a distinct SCCM problem.

Record the code exactly as displayed, including any message beside it. Also note whether the failure occurred during operating-system deployment, application installation, a package or program, a software-update scan, or another client or server action. The same HRESULT can be raised by different Configuration Manager and Windows servicing paths, so the text of the code alone cannot tell you which component is broken.

Capture the failure while it is still reproducible

Before resetting services or rerunning a deployment, make a short incident record. It gives you the context needed to select the right log and prevents a generic repair from erasing useful evidence.

  • Failing phase: write down the exact task-sequence step, deployment type, package/program, or software-update phase.
  • Time: record the local time, time zone, and the first and last timestamps around the error.
  • Device and infrastructure: identify the client, its Windows edition and version, the Configuration Manager client version, and the site or server involved.
  • Deployment details: include the task-sequence or deployment name, collection, content source, and whether the failure is new or follows a change.
  • Log excerpt: save the final 20–50 lines around the failure, not just the line containing 0x80070057. Include preceding warnings and the first follow-up error.
  • Scope: check whether one client fails or many clients fail on the same deployment.

That record separates a parameter rejected by one local operation from a policy, content, Windows Update, or infrastructure condition affecting a population.

Open the log that matches the failing stage

Do not search every SCCM log at random. Start with the component that was active when the error appeared, then correlate entries by timestamp. For software-update scanning, Microsoft specifically directs administrators to WUAHandler.log and WindowsUpdate.log. WUAHandler.log records what the Windows Update Agent reports; it does not independently diagnose the underlying Windows Update failure.

Observed failure First evidence to inspect What the evidence can establish
Software-update scan or update evaluation WUAHandler.log and WindowsUpdate.log Whether the Windows Update Agent returned the HRESULT, and which scan or servicing operation rejected a parameter.
Operating-system task sequence The log for the task-sequence action that stopped, with timestamps from the deployment record Whether the failing action involved partitioning, an applied image, a command line, a package, a driver, or another sequence component.
Application or package deployment The client log belonging to the deployment type, package, or program that was executing Whether the parameter was rejected by the installer command, detection logic, content handling, or policy evaluation.
Policy, content, or communication symptom The client log for policy retrieval or content location, plus the corresponding site-system evidence Whether the client received the intended policy, could locate content, and was communicating with the required management or update infrastructure.

The table is a triage map, not a promise that one log contains the entire explanation. A task sequence can call Windows servicing, a package can invoke an installer, and an update scan can be affected by policy. Follow the timestamped chain until you find the first component that reports the invalid parameter, rather than treating the last propagated error as the cause.

Check Configuration Manager prerequisites before changing Windows

An SCCM client can report 0x80070057 after a prerequisite failed elsewhere. Confirm the conditions required by the operation you recorded.

Management point and policy communication

Verify that the client can communicate with its management point and has received the current policy. A stale or incomplete policy can supply an invalid command, an old deployment setting, or an update configuration that no longer matches the site.

Software-update point and WSUS location

For update scans, confirm that the client is assigned to the intended software-update point and that the Windows Update Agent is using the expected WSUS location. Compare a working client in the same boundary with the failing client when possible. If Group Policy has overwritten Windows Update settings, the client may be pointed somewhere other than the Configuration Manager update infrastructure.

Boundary, content, and permissions

Check the client’s boundary assignment, distribution-point or other content availability, and the account permissions required by the failing action. A task sequence that cannot obtain content, or a program that cannot access its source, may surface a later parameter error instead of a clear download message.

Version and population checks

Record the Windows and Configuration Manager versions on the affected device. Then compare scope: one client suggests local state, while simultaneous failures across a collection suggest policy, content, update-point, or server-side configuration. Do not apply a client-only cache reset to an infrastructure-wide failure.

Repair a corrupted Windows Update data store

Use this procedure only when WUAHandler.log and WindowsUpdate.log show that the failing path is Windows Update and the evidence points to a damaged Windows Update data store. Renaming the folder preserves it for review; deleting it removes evidence and is unnecessary for this reset.

  1. Sign in with an account that can control Windows services and modify the Windows directory.
  2. Pause the deployment or scan so it does not recreate files while the service is stopped.
  3. Open the Services console, locate Windows Update (the service name is wuauserv), and choose Stop. If you prefer an elevated Command Prompt, run net stop wuauserv and wait for confirmation that the service has stopped.
  4. In File Explorer, open C:Windows. Rename SoftwareDistribution to SoftwareDistribution.old. If Windows reports that files are in use, confirm that wuauserv is stopped and close applications that may be scanning the directory.
  5. Return to Services and choose Start for Windows Update. From an elevated Command Prompt, the equivalent is net start wuauserv.
  6. Trigger a fresh software-update scan through the normal Configuration Manager client action or deployment workflow used in your environment.
  7. Reproduce the problem once, then review the newly written WUAHandler.log and WindowsUpdate.log around the new timestamp. A changed error is evidence that the cache was involved; it is not proof that every SCCM component is repaired.

If the folder cannot be renamed, do not repeatedly kill unrelated processes or remove system files. Recheck service state and permissions, capture the exact access error, and escalate with the logs.

Run System File Checker and the Windows Update troubleshooter only for a Windows servicing failure

Microsoft associates 0x80070057 in Windows Update occurrences with corrupted files or incorrect configuration and suggests System File Checker and the Windows Update troubleshooter. These checks are appropriate when the failing stage is Windows Update or Windows servicing; they are not a general remedy for an application command, task-sequence partitioning operation, or content-location problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

System File Checker

  1. Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
  2. Run sfc /scannow.
  3. Let the scan finish, and record its result. If it reports repairs, restart the computer when requested or when your maintenance window allows.
  4. Run the same software-update scan again and compare the timestamps and messages in WUAHandler.log and WindowsUpdate.log.

Do not interpret the command completing successfully as confirmation that SCCM itself was fixed. The meaningful test is whether the same Windows Update operation now succeeds and whether the logs stop reporting the parameter error.

Windows Update troubleshooter

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter from the affected Windows installation when the update path is the confirmed failing component. Accept only changes that fit your organization’s servicing policy, then reproduce the scan and collect fresh logs. If the troubleshooter reports a configuration issue controlled by Group Policy or your update point, correct that source rather than repeatedly running the troubleshooter.

When the error occurs in a task sequence

A task-sequence failure needs a step-specific investigation. Use the exact step name and timestamp to identify which action rejected a parameter.

Partitioning or disk-preparation step

If the stop occurs while preparing a disk, inspect the task-sequence action’s configured parameters, target disk selection, and preceding storage detection entries. Confirm that the sequence is running in the intended firmware and deployment context and that the disk is visible to the environment. The HRESULT alone does not prove that the partition table is at fault; use the step log to establish what value was rejected.

Command-line, package, or application step

Review the exact command line, working directory, package content, and installer arguments recorded for the failing step. Compare them with a known-good deployment definition. A malformed argument can produce “The parameter is incorrect” even when Windows Update is healthy. Correct the deployment definition, redistribute or refresh content if the logs show a source problem, and rerun only after policy and content availability are confirmed.

Image apply or post-installation servicing

Separate failure during image application from failure during the first post-installation update or application step. The former belongs to the task-sequence and deployment logs; the latter may lead to Windows servicing logs. Correlate the first error after the image is applied instead of resetting the update store before proving that an update scan was running.

When the error occurs in an application or deployment

For an application, package, or program, identify whether the client rejected policy, failed to locate content, or launched an installer that rejected its arguments. Check the deployment type’s detection and command settings, the source path and distribution status, and the account context required by the program. If only one application has the error while software-update scans work, keep the investigation in the deployment component rather than changing Windows Update.

For a console-initiated action, capture the console timestamp and the server-side operation that followed it. A console message may be a propagated client or provider error; the component log that performed the operation is more useful than the dialog alone.

Distinguish a local client problem from a wider Configuration Manager incident

  • One client, one deployment: prioritize local logs, policy receipt, content access, permissions, and Windows state.
  • Many clients, one deployment: compare policy, boundary, content distribution, deployment settings, and the site-system logs.
  • Many clients, software-update scans: examine the software-update point, WSUS location, Group Policy, and update infrastructure before resetting individual caches.
  • Several unrelated actions on one client: look for a common local Windows or client-policy condition, and preserve logs before repair.

Testing one working client against one failing client in the same boundary and deployment is often more informative than repeating the same reset on the failing device. Note every difference in Windows version, client version, policy, update point, and permissions.

What not to do

  • Do not treat 0x0070057 and 0x80070057 as interchangeable without checking the original display and log.
  • Do not assume the HRESULT identifies a single SCCM component or a universal fix.
  • Do not rename SoftwareDistribution when the failing stage is a task-sequence command, application installer, or content operation.
  • Do not repeatedly run generic resets while discarding the final 20–50 log lines; each attempt can make the original sequence harder to reconstruct.
  • Do not infer a server-side outage from one client, or a client defect from simultaneous failures across a collection.

Prepare an escalation package when the error remains

Escalate after the matching log still reports the error or after a repair changes the symptom without identifying its cause. Include:

  • the exact code and adjacent message;
  • the failing task-sequence step, deployment type, or update phase;
  • client and server names, Windows and Configuration Manager versions, and the affected scope;
  • timestamps with time zone;
  • the relevant log files, including WUAHandler.log and WindowsUpdate.log for an update scan;
  • the final 20–50 lines before and after the failure;
  • policy, boundary, software-update point, WSUS, content, and permission checks already completed;
  • any cache rename, SFC scan, or troubleshooter action and its recorded result.

This information lets an administrator or Microsoft support map the HRESULT to the actual component instead of prescribing another context-free reset.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared DLL files, and can clean temporary and cache files. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, offers a free trial of at least two days before a paid subscription, complements an antivirus rather than replacing one, and results vary; no tool repairs every SCCM crash.

Bottom line

Correct the code to 0x80070057 if that is what the logs show, but treat it as a symptom. Identify the failing SCCM stage, read that component’s log, verify policy, update-point, boundary, content, and permission prerequisites, and use the Windows Update cache reset, sfc /scannow, or the troubleshooter only when the evidence points to Windows servicing. A precise timestamped log trail is the dependable path to the real cause.
