If your Xbox One shows 0x800070057, first verify the digits on the screen. That exact string does not match an official Xbox support entry; the likely intended code is 0x80070057, with one fewer zero. Microsoft documents 0x80070057 for Windows Update, not specifically for Xbox hardware, so the code alone cannot identify the failed component. Record the complete message, the point at which it appears, and whether you have the original Xbox One, Xbox One S, or Xbox One X. Then work through a normal restart and network retry, use the console’s startup troubleshooter if it appears, and move to Offline System Update (OSU) USB recovery only when online updating still fails.
What the code means—and why the extra zero matters
Microsoft’s documented Windows Update code is 0x80070057. Its Windows guidance associates that code with corrupted files, permission problems, or an incorrect configuration. That documentation does not establish that an Xbox One displaying a similarly shaped code has the same cause. An extra zero can be a transcription or display-reading error, and Xbox recovery instructions depend on the exact message and console model.

Do not apply Windows repair commands to the console. System File Checker (sfc /scannow), Windows Update cache commands, and registry changes are Windows procedures; they are not Xbox One repair steps. At most, a Windows computer may be used to prepare a USB drive for an Offline System Update, and problems on that computer should be handled separately.

Write down the complete code exactly as shown, including every zero and letter. Note the console model, whether an update had already downloaded, whether the console was recently unplugged, and whether other devices can use the same network. Photographing the screen is useful if you later contact support.
Choose the least destructive recovery path
| Option | When it fits | Needs Xbox services? | Data-loss risk | What you need |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Restart and retry online | One-time interruption, temporary network problem, or incomplete download | Yes | Normally none | Working internet connection |
| Startup-troubleshooter update or reset | The console presents recovery choices or cannot reach the normal dashboard | Depends on the selected option | Update: usually none; reset: possible, depending on the choice | Console controls and the options shown on screen |
| Offline System Update (OSU) | Online updating repeatedly fails or the console cannot reach Xbox services | No, after the files are downloaded | Usually preserves installed content when the update succeeds; a later reset can erase data | Computer, compatible NTFS USB flash drive, and the correct OSU package for the model |
| Microsoft repair | Recovery steps fail, the console loops, or hardware trouble is suspected | No | Service handling may require a reset or replacement; confirm during the repair process | Console details and proof of purchase if requested |
Start at the top. A reset or firmware recovery is more disruptive than a restart, and an OSU package intended for a different Xbox One model may fail during recovery.
Step 1: Restart the console and network equipment
Perform a complete power cycle
- Hold the Xbox power control until the console turns off. Do not interrupt an active installation unless the console is already frozen or explicitly instructs you to do so.
- Unplug the console’s power cable after it has shut down. Leave it disconnected briefly, then reconnect it and start the console.
- Restart the modem and router using their normal power controls. Wait until the network indicators show that the connection has returned.
- Connect the Xbox to the network it normally uses. If possible, test a wired connection for the retry; a wired link removes Wi-Fi signal loss as a variable.
- Start the update again and watch whether the failure happens while checking for an update, downloading, verifying, or installing it.
A restart clears a stalled process, but it cannot repair a damaged update package or a failing storage device. If the same code returns at the same stage, continue instead of repeatedly interrupting the installation.

- Xbox One, 500GB HDD, 8GB RAM, HDMI, Blu-ray, Wireless Controller, Chat Headset
Check the basic network conditions
- Confirm that another device can reach the internet through the same router.
- Temporarily remove unusual network filtering, captive-portal connections, or manually configured settings that prevent the console from reaching Xbox services.
- If the console offers a network test in its settings, run it and record any separate message. That result is evidence about connectivity, not proof that the 0x80070057-style code has a network cause.
- Do not change several router settings at once. If a change does not help, restore the previous value so you know which condition you are testing.
Step 2: Use the startup troubleshooter when it appears
If the Xbox starts in a recovery screen rather than the dashboard, read each option before selecting it. Microsoft can change the wording between console software versions, so follow the labels displayed on your console and the current Xbox support instructions.
Prefer an update option over a reset
Choose the troubleshooter’s update option when one is available and the console has not yet been reset. An update attempts to replace the system software while preserving user content. Keep the console connected to power and do not remove a USB drive or shut down during the installation.
Understand reset choices
A reset option can have more than one mode. A choice that keeps games and apps is less destructive than one that removes everything, but the exact effect is determined by the wording on your screen. A full reset can remove accounts, settings, locally stored saves, installed games, and apps. Cloud-synchronized saves can normally be downloaded again after you sign in, but unsynchronized local data may not be recoverable. If the console still reaches the dashboard, allow it to synchronize and back up anything the game or app supports before selecting a full reset.

If the troubleshooter repeatedly returns to the same screen, stop selecting reset options at random. Record the displayed code and proceed to the offline-update method or repair escalation.
Step 3: Retry the online system update
When the console can reach the dashboard, use its system-update area and select the available update or check-for-updates command. The labels can differ by software revision, but they are normally under the console’s system or settings section. Keep enough free internal storage for the update, disconnect unnecessary USB accessories, and leave the console powered throughout the download and installation.
If the update begins but fails during verification, the downloaded payload may be incomplete or corrupted. A fresh restart and retry can obtain a new copy. If the same failure repeats, do not keep downloading indefinitely; move to OSU recovery so the update files can be supplied from a computer.

Step 4: Install an Offline System Update from USB
Offline System Update is the recovery route for an Xbox One that cannot complete an online update. The process documented in an iFixit Xbox One S firmware guide uses a computer to obtain the appropriate OSU package, copies it to a USB flash drive formatted as NTFS, and applies it through the console’s startup troubleshooter. Microsoft’s current package and instructions are authoritative; the package must match the exact console model.
Prepare the computer and USB drive
- Use a reliable Windows computer with internet access to obtain the current OSU package from Microsoft’s Xbox support instructions. Do not use a package copied from an unverified forum or a different Xbox model.
- Use a USB flash drive with enough capacity for the package. A USB flash drive for Xbox offline update is only the recovery medium; it does not diagnose the console or replace the system package.
- Back up any files on the drive. Formatting it as NTFS erases its existing contents.
- Format the drive as NTFS, not FAT32 or exFAT, using the computer’s disk-formatting tool. Verify the selected drive letter before confirming so you do not erase another disk.
- Extract the OSU download exactly as directed by Microsoft. Copy the required update folder and files to the root of the USB drive, not inside an additional folder created by the extraction program.
- Eject the drive safely from the computer. If the computer reports a corrupted archive or an incomplete download, obtain the package again rather than copying damaged files.
Apply the package on the Xbox
- Turn the Xbox off completely and disconnect other USB storage devices and accessories that are not needed for recovery.
- Insert the prepared NTFS USB drive into the console.
- Start the console’s startup troubleshooter using the recovery method shown in the current Xbox instructions or the method described on the screen.
- Select the offline system update option. If the option is unavailable, recheck the drive format, file placement, USB connection, and OSU package model.
- Allow the update to run without removing power or the USB drive. The console may restart more than once.
- When the dashboard returns, remove the USB drive only after the console has finished processing it. Check the system version and sign in to confirm that the update completed.
When OSU reports an error
- Package not recognized: confirm NTFS formatting, root-level file placement, and that the download was fully extracted.
- Update starts and fails again: repeat the download with a newly formatted drive and verify that the package is for the original Xbox One, One S, or One X model you own.
- The troubleshooter cannot read any USB drive: test another compatible USB port and drive. A failed port, drive, or console storage device may be involved.
- The console loops after installation: do not repeatedly power-cycle it during a progress screen. If the loop persists after one correctly prepared OSU attempt, record the screen and escalate to Microsoft repair.
An incorrect OSU package can fail and can complicate recovery. Model matching is therefore more important than trying several random downloads.

Game or app installation
If the dashboard and system software work but one game or app fails, the problem is not necessarily the system-update code. Check whether the failure is limited to one title, verify that the console has adequate storage, and retry the installation after restarting. For a disc installation, inspect the disc for damage and test another title if available. For a Store download, check the network connection and account that owns the license. Avoid a full console reset until you know that multiple system functions fail.

Sign-in or service connection
If the code appears only when signing in, record any separate service-status or account message. Restart the console and network, then retry. A sign-in failure does not prove that the system software is corrupted, so OSU should be reserved for a console update or startup-recovery failure.
Repeated crashes or shutdowns
Unexpected shutdowns, overheating warnings, or crashes in several games point toward power, ventilation, storage, or another hardware condition rather than a single update file. Keep vents clear, use the supplied power arrangement, and stop using the console if it smells hot, shows physical damage, or repeatedly loses power. Such symptoms warrant service rather than repeated firmware attempts.
What not to do
- Do not run Windows-only commands such as SFC, DISM, or Windows Update cache resets on the Xbox. They cannot repair Xbox system files.
- Do not rename, delete, or rearrange OSU files unless the current Microsoft instructions explicitly require it.
- Do not install a package intended for another Xbox model.
- Do not interrupt an update because the progress indicator pauses briefly. Interrupt only when the console is clearly frozen and the recovery instructions provide no alternative.
- Do not assume that a code containing 0x80070057 has one universal cause. The officially documented Microsoft meaning is for Windows Update, while the Xbox symptom still requires console-specific diagnosis.
When to contact Microsoft for repair
Escalate when the code is verified, a restart and network retry fail, the startup-troubleshooter update or correctly prepared OSU attempt fails, or the console shows hardware symptoms. Microsoft’s Xbox One Standard Warranty says: “If the troubleshooting tips don’t resolve Your problem, then follow the online repair process in the Support section at https://support.microsoft.com/.” Use the current Xbox support repair flow rather than an old download link.
Have the console model, serial number, complete error message, purchase information, and a summary of the steps already attempted. Remove personal accessories and keep the USB drive and OSU files available in case support asks which package and format you used. Ask whether the proposed service may erase local data and whether any replacement console will return without your installed games or settings.
After the console recovers
- Confirm the system software version in the console’s system-information screen.
- Restart once more and verify that the dashboard loads normally without the USB drive attached.
- Sign in and allow cloud data to synchronize before launching games.
- Install one small update or app first, then test a larger download. This separates a general recovery success from a storage or network problem that remains.
- Keep the exact error photo and recovery notes until the console has completed several normal starts and updates.
A practical decision rule
Use an online retry when the console reaches Xbox services and the failure looks temporary. Use the startup troubleshooter’s update choice when the dashboard will not load but recovery options are available. Use OSU USB recovery when online updating repeatedly fails or the console cannot connect, taking care to match the package to the model and format the drive as NTFS. Choose a reset only after understanding the data consequences. If those paths fail, Microsoft repair is the appropriate next step; no Windows command or generic firmware file can substitute for console-specific support.
