If Windows 11 displays 0x8007045D while restoring a backup, creating an image, or copying files, it is reporting ERROR_IO_DEVICE: Windows could not complete a read or write through one part of the storage path. The failure may be the source disk, destination disk, USB cable, port, hub, enclosure, flash drive, SD card, or optical media. The string “08007045d” is usually a malformed version of the code, so first confirm the exact characters in your own dialog.

Protect readable files before repeatedly scanning or retrying a questionable disk. Then isolate the source and destination, simplify the physical connection, run CHKDSK where appropriate, use the drive maker’s diagnostics, and retry only after the storage path is stable.

What 0x8007045D means during a restore

Microsoft defines 0x8007045D as “ERROR_IO_DEVICE” — “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.” In practical terms, Windows requested data from a device or asked it to write data, and the operation did not complete.

A restore or system-image job has at least two storage sides:

  • Source: the internal drive, backup image, USB media, SD card, optical disc, or other volume being read.
  • Destination: the disk or partition receiving restored files or image data.

Either side can be responsible. The connection between them can also fail. A loose or damaged cable, a failing USB port, a hub, an enclosure, or an unstable power connection can look like a bad disk because all of them interrupt reads or writes. There is no reliable published prevalence statistic showing that one component is usually at fault, so diagnose the complete path rather than replacing a drive immediately.

Do not treat this as proof that Windows itself is damaged or that a registry edit will solve it. The code describes an I/O failure; the useful question is which device or connection could not complete the requested operation.

Before troubleshooting: verify the code and protect data

Confirm the exact error

  1. Photograph or copy the complete Windows dialog, including the code and the operation that failed.
  2. Check whether the code is written as 0x8007045D. If your message says “08007045d” or uses another spelling, search your own event or recovery screen for the normalized code before applying these steps.
  3. Record whether the failure occurred during a restore, a system-image operation, a backup, or a file copy. That context identifies which volumes were being read and written.

Copy irreplaceable files first

If the source or destination is still readable, copy irreplaceable documents, save files, photographs, and other personal data to a separate, known-good location before running repeated repair attempts. A disk that is deteriorating can become less readable while it is being scanned or repeatedly asked to retry failed sectors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the drive makes unusual mechanical noises, repeatedly disconnects, or disappears during access, stop diagnostic scans and prioritize data recovery. Do not sacrifice the only copy of important files for a routine restore attempt.

Separate the source from the destination

Write down the volume that contains the backup or files and the volume that should receive the restore. For a system-image restore, the source may be an internal disk or external backup device while the destination is an internal drive. For a normal copy, reverse those roles as appropriate.

This distinction matters because replacing a destination drive will not repair a failing source disk, and changing a cable connected to the destination will not correct corruption on the backup media. Test each side independently where possible:

  • Can Windows open and copy files from the source without errors?
  • Can the destination accept a small test copy from another known-good source?
  • Does the same device fail when used for a different operation?

A failure that follows one physical drive is evidence against the computer-side port or cable. A failure that disappears when you change the cable or port points toward the connection rather than the media itself.

Check the physical connection

Reconnect and simplify the path

  1. Shut down or safely disconnect the external device according to its normal removal procedure.
  2. Reconnect the drive firmly at both ends. For an enclosure, check the cable at the enclosure and at the computer.
  3. Move the device to a different USB port. Avoid a hub while testing; connect directly to the computer.
  4. Try another compatible cable. A cable can interrupt writing even when the drive appears in Windows.
  5. If the device has a separate enclosure or adapter, test with another known-good enclosure or adapter when available.

After each change, repeat a small, non-critical read or write test before attempting the full restore. Keep notes about which port, cable, and computer were used. If the same external disk fails on another computer, suspicion shifts toward the disk or its enclosure. If it works elsewhere, the original computer-side USB path deserves attention.

Test another computer when possible

Connect the affected device directly to another Windows computer and perform a limited file read or write using nonessential data. This does not prove that the device is healthy, but it helps separate a drive-specific fault from a port, cable, hub, or host-system problem. Stop if the device disconnects repeatedly or begins making unusual sounds.

Run CHKDSK on an accessible volume

CHKDSK can identify and attempt to repair file-system problems on a volume that Windows can access. It cannot make failing physical media reliable, so use it only after protecting important data and simplifying the connection.

  1. Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  2. Enter chkdsk X: /r, replacing X: with the affected drive letter.
  3. Read the result. If Windows says the volume is in use and asks to schedule the check at the next restart, confirm the schedule and restart when you can leave the process uninterrupted.
  4. Allow the check to complete, then review whether Windows reports file-system errors or unreadable sectors.

The /r option asks CHKDSK to locate bad sectors and recover readable information. It can take a long time, especially on a large or damaged disk. Do not interrupt a running check unless the device is repeatedly disconnecting or showing signs of physical failure. In those situations, stop and return to data recovery rather than adding more stress to the drive.

Use the manufacturer’s physical-media diagnostics

Run the storage manufacturer’s own diagnostic utility after your data is protected and the connection is stable. The Microsoft Q&A guidance cited for this error gives SeaTools as an example for examining physical media. Use the diagnostic supplied for your particular drive and follow its instructions exactly.

Interpret the result

  • File-system problems, but physical tests pass: keep a verified copy of important files, complete the recommended file-system repair, and retest the restore.
  • Physical-media test fails: treat the drive as unreliable. Recover readable data and plan a replacement instead of trying registry tweaks or repeatedly rerunning the restore.
  • Tests cannot complete because the drive disconnects: check the cable, port, hub, and enclosure once more. If disconnections continue, prioritize recovery and replacement.
  • Diagnostics pass but the restore still fails: test the other volume, the backup image, and the full source-to-destination path. A passing test on one device does not clear every other component.

Retry the restore only after the path is stable

Once the source remains readable, the destination accepts test writes, and the physical connection is reliable, retry the restore or image operation.

  1. Disconnect unnecessary USB storage and remove hubs from the path.
  2. Use the known-good cable and port identified during testing.
  3. Confirm that the source image or backup can be read from beginning to end, if the software provides a verification option.
  4. Retry with the same destination only if its diagnostics and test writes were successful.
  5. If the error returns, try a different known-good destination or a different backup image. A damaged image can reproduce the same read failure even after the hardware path is corrected.

If the code follows the source disk to another computer and another cable, stop treating the destination as the primary suspect. Recover from a different image or backup if one exists, and arrange repair or replacement of the source device.

Decide whether hardware replacement is justified

Replacement is appropriate when diagnostics report physical failure, the device repeatedly disconnects across known-good ports and cables, or the same drive causes I/O errors on more than one computer. Protect data first; a replacement does not recover files that were never copied.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An external hard drive is a reasonable replacement destination when the current external destination has been diagnosed as failing. It is not a cure for a bad source disk, a damaged cable, a defective port, a failing enclosure, or a corrupted backup. Select the replacement only after the failing component has been isolated.

The error follows the same drive across ports or computers Protect data, run the maker’s diagnostics, and plan recovery or replacement The fault is associated with the drive or its enclosure rather than one computer-side connection
The error disappears with another cable or direct port Retire the bad cable, avoid the hub, and retry using the stable connection The USB path was interrupting reads or writes
CHKDSK reports file-system problems while the drive stays connected Keep a backup, complete the file-system repair, and test again The volume may have logical corruption rather than confirmed physical failure
Physical diagnostics fail or the disk makes unusual noises Stop repeated scans, recover readable data, and replace the device Physical-media failure is a hardware decision, not a registry-tweaking problem

Common situations and the correct response

External hard drive disconnects during writing

Reconnect it directly, change the USB port and cable, remove the hub, and test on another computer. If it still disconnects during writes, protect readable files and run the manufacturer’s physical test. Do not assume buying another destination fixes a source drive that is failing.

USB flash drive or SD card fails during a copy

Test the card or flash drive in another port or reader and try a different cable or adapter where applicable. Copy important files before CHKDSK or any further write operation. If failures follow the removable media, use diagnostics when available and replace it after recovery.

Optical media cannot be read

Cleanly reseat the disc and test it in another compatible drive. If the same disc fails repeatedly while other media works, the disc itself may be unreadable. Use another verified backup rather than repeatedly forcing a restore from damaged media.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restore fails after changing the destination drive

Because the source and destination are separate, a new destination does not clear a source-read error. Verify that the backup image can be read and test the source disk independently before changing more hardware.

What not to do

  • Do not keep retrying a noisy or repeatedly disconnecting drive before copying important files.
  • Do not assume the destination is at fault simply because the restore stopped while writing; the source may have failed while being read.
  • Do not remove a hub from the test path only temporarily and then reintroduce it for the actual restore without verifying stability.
  • Do not treat a physical diagnostic failure as a software-configuration problem.
  • Do not claim success because Windows detects the device; detection does not prove that sustained reads and writes are reliable.

Optional shortcut after the manual checks

Outbyte PC Repair can be an optional shortcut for checking and repairing some common Windows issues, cleaning temporary and cache files, reviewing an app-crash log, and adjusting settings that may reduce CPU, RAM, or disk load. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7 and offers a free trial by category for at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements an antivirus rather than replacing one, results vary, and no utility repairs every storage-device failure or restore crash.
