How to Fix the 0x8007422 Problem in Windows

Start by checking the Windows Update service. The exact code 0x8007422 appears in user reports involving Windows Update, Microsoft Store and Xbox downloads. Microsoft’s documented code 0x80070422 means the Windows Update service is stopped or disabled, so 0x8007422 may be a transcription or display variant of the same service problem. Verify every character in the original dialog before changing anything.

The safest repair order is Microsoft’s built-in troubleshooter, the Windows Update and BITS services, a restart, then DISM and System File Checker (SFC). Only after those steps should you consider a clean restart, disk repair or a full Windows Update component reset.

What error 0x8007422 means

There is no separate, consistently documented Microsoft error definition for 0x8007422. Microsoft Q&A reports show that users have seen this exact string while Windows Update, Microsoft Store or Xbox functions were failing. Microsoft’s Windows client error catalog documents 0x80070422 as ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED and explains that the problem occurs when the Windows Update service has stopped working or is not running.

That distinction matters. A single mistyped digit can send you toward the wrong repair, while a disabled update service can affect several parts of Windows at once. If the dialog actually says 0x80070422, the service diagnosis is direct. If it says 0x8007422, use the same service-first sequence, but keep the possibility of an application-specific problem in mind.

Typical symptoms

  • Windows Update refuses to search for, download or install updates.
  • Microsoft Store downloads stop, fail immediately or remain pending.
  • Xbox app game or app downloads fail with the code.
  • Windows displays a service error such as 1058 when you try to start Windows Update.

Before you begin

Record the exact code, the app that displayed it and what you were doing when it appeared. The same-looking failure has different implications when it occurs only in Xbox compared with every Windows Update operation.

  • Sign in with an account that can approve administrator prompts. DISM, SFC and some service changes require elevation.
  • Save open work before restarting or running disk repair.
  • Check that the system drive has enough free space for an update. Microsoft includes free-space checks in its update troubleshooting workflow.
  • Do not disable Windows services at random. Change only the service identified in the steps below, and note its original setting so you can reverse your change.

Fix 0x8007422 in the recommended order

1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

Windows’ own troubleshooter can detect a stopped service and apply supported fixes without requiring command-line work.

  1. On Windows 11, open the Get Help app and search for Windows Update troubleshooter. Follow its prompts and allow it to apply recommended repairs.
  2. On Windows versions that expose the troubleshooter in Settings, open the Windows Update troubleshooter from the Settings troubleshooting area. Let the diagnostic complete rather than closing it after the first check.
  3. Read the result. If it reports that a service was repaired, restart Windows before testing the failed update, Store download or Xbox download.

The troubleshooter is the lowest-effort and most reversible option. It does not replace the service check below: a service can be set to Disabled again by a policy, cleanup utility or earlier manual change.

2. Enable and start Windows Update

The service check addresses the condition Microsoft associates with 0x80070422 and is the most useful manual test for the 0x8007422 variant.

  1. Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter. Approve the administrator prompt if Windows displays one.
  2. In the Services list, locate Windows Update.
  3. Open its properties. If the startup setting is Disabled, change it to a non-disabled setting available on your Windows edition, select Apply, and then choose Start. If the service is already running, use Restart so the current session is refreshed.
  4. Select OK, close Services, restart the computer and retry the operation that failed.

If Windows refuses to start the service and reports error 1058, the service is still disabled. Return to its properties, remove the Disabled setting, apply the change and try Start again. If a work or school device immediately returns to Disabled, an administrator policy may be controlling it; do not repeatedly override a managed setting.

3. Check BITS and related dependencies

Microsoft Store and Xbox operations can depend on the same update infrastructure even when Windows Update itself is not the screen showing the failure. In services.msc, locate Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) and verify that it is not Disabled and can be started. If it is stopped, start it, restart Windows and test the download again.

For Windows Update, open the service’s Dependencies tab and inspect the services listed there. A dependency that is stopped can prevent Windows Update from starting. Correct only a clearly disabled or stopped dependency, and keep a note of any setting you change. If a dependency immediately stops again, record its name and the displayed error instead of changing several services at once.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Restart and retry the exact operation

After changing a service, perform a full Windows restart. Then reproduce the original action: open Settings and check Windows Update, or retry the Microsoft Store or Xbox download that produced the code. Testing the same action is important because a service repair that fixes Windows Update does not prove that an unrelated Store cache or account issue has also been corrected.

5. Repair the component store with DISM and SFC

Use these commands when the service is enabled and running but updates still fail, or when Windows reports damaged system components. DISM repairs the Windows component store first; SFC then checks protected system files against that repaired store.

  1. Open Command Prompt with administrator privileges. Search for Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator, and approve the prompt.
  2. Run the following command exactly:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Allow DISM to finish. It can take time and may appear to pause; do not close the window while it is working.

  1. When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow

Wait for SFC to reach 100 percent and read its final message. Restart Windows even if SFC says it found no integrity violations, then retry Windows Update, Store or Xbox.

These commands repair Windows components and protected files; they do not change personal documents. They also cannot correct a service that remains Disabled, so repeat the Services check if the same code returns.

Advanced steps when the basic repair fails

Check disk space before resetting anything

An update may fail when the system drive lacks working space, even after the service is fixed. Remove only files you recognize as safe to remove, empty the Recycle Bin if appropriate, and retry. Do not treat cleanup as a guaranteed performance fix; this check is specifically to ensure Windows has room to stage an update.

Use a clean restart to isolate third-party software

A clean restart starts Windows with nonessential third-party services and startup programs temporarily disabled. It is useful when Windows Update works in a minimal environment but fails during a normal boot.

  1. Press Win + R, enter msconfig, and open System Configuration.
  2. On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then disable the remaining non-Microsoft services for the test.
  3. Open the startup-management link from System Configuration, disable nonessential startup applications, and restart.
  4. Try the update or download. If it succeeds, re-enable services and startup items in groups, restarting between groups, until the interfering program is identified.
  5. Return to normal startup when testing is complete. A clean restart is a diagnostic state, not a permanent security or performance configuration.

Repair file-system errors with CHKDSK

Microsoft also documents checking the disk when ordinary update troubleshooting does not resolve the problem. In an elevated Command Prompt, run:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
chkdsk /f C:

The /f option repairs logical file-system errors. Because the system volume is normally in use, Windows may ask to schedule the check for the next restart. Save your work, accept the schedule, restart, and allow the scan to finish. Do not interrupt the process unless Windows explicitly provides a safe cancellation option.

Reset Windows Update components only as a last resort

Microsoft documents a deeper Windows Update component reset for cases where the troubleshooter, service checks, DISM, SFC and disk checks have not helped. The reset stops update-related services and rebuilds update working folders. The exact commands and folder names depend on the Windows version, so use Microsoft’s procedure for your edition rather than copying an unverified command bundle from a forum.

Before a reset, write down the original service states and make sure you can approve administrator prompts. A component reset is broader and less easily reversed than starting a service; match it to a persistent Windows Update failure, not a one-time Store or Xbox interruption.

Windows Update fails everywhere

Prioritize the Windows Update service, BITS, a restart, DISM and SFC. If the service is repeatedly disabled, investigate device-management policy instead of repeatedly forcing it on. A clean restart can identify third-party software that interferes with update operations.

Microsoft Store fails but Windows Update works

Confirm Windows Update and BITS are running anyway, because Store downloads can use shared update infrastructure. Restart Windows and retry the same Store download. If Windows Update remains healthy but only one Store operation fails, note the app, download state and exact message before moving to a broad component reset.

Xbox downloads fail but Windows Update works

Perform the same service and BITS checks, restart, and retry the Xbox download. Keep the Xbox error and the Windows Update status separate in your notes; the shared service diagnosis is plausible, but the evidence for 0x8007422 comes from reports across several Microsoft apps rather than a single universal definition.

How the repair options compare

Approach Safety Scope Effort Reversibility
Built-in Windows Update troubleshooter Highest; uses supported Windows diagnostics Detects and applies common update fixes Low High; changes are generally diagnostic or automatically applied
Windows Update and BITS service check High when only the affected services are changed Service configuration and availability Low High; you can restore the previous startup setting
DISM followed by SFC High when run from an elevated Microsoft command prompt Component store and protected system files Moderate; commands may take time Moderate; repairs are deliberate rather than a simple toggle
Clean restart High if Microsoft services remain enabled and settings are restored afterward Third-party service or startup interference Moderate High; re-enable the items after testing
chkdsk /f C: Appropriate when disk errors are suspected; schedule carefully Logical file-system errors on the system volume Moderate; may require a restart Lower than a service toggle because repairs alter the file system
Windows Update component reset Use only with a version-matched Microsoft procedure Broad update working folders and services High Lower; it is broader than ordinary troubleshooting

When the code keeps returning

  • Recheck the original dialog character by character. 0x8007422 and 0x80070422 are not the same string.
  • Note whether the failure affects Windows Update, Microsoft Store, Xbox or more than one service-dependent feature.
  • Record whether Windows Update or BITS changes back to Disabled after a restart. That pattern points to policy or another configuration change rather than a one-time service stoppage.
  • Keep the final DISM, SFC and service results. Those messages are more useful for a support technician than the code alone.

As an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues, including broken system elements, invalid redirects and shared DLL files, while also offering settings tweaks, temporary-file cleanup, privacy checks, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, offers a free trial by category for at least two days and then requires a subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary, and no utility repairs every crash.

Bottom line

Treat 0x8007422 as a service-availability problem until the exact dialog proves otherwise. Run the Windows troubleshooter, enable and start Windows Update, check BITS, restart, and then use DISM followed by SFC. Reserve clean-start testing, CHKDSK and a component reset for failures that survive that sequence, and always match the repair to the app and Windows version showing the error.
