How to Fix the 500 Internal Server Error in WordPress

A practical, reversible troubleshooting guide for WordPress HTTP 500 errors, covering dashboard and no-dashboard recovery, logs, plugins, themes, .htaccess, PHP, memory, core files, and host support.

A WordPress HTTP 500 error means the server failed while processing a request; it does not identify the failing component. Restore the site methodically: record the exact failure time, read the server and PHP logs, then isolate plugins, the theme, .htaccess, PHP settings, memory, and core files in that order. Rename or deactivate components rather than deleting them, so every test is reversible. If you cannot reach the logs or file manager, give your hosting provider the timestamp, URL, and nearby log entries.

What the WordPress 500 error actually tells you

An HTTP 500, often shown as “Internal Server Error,” is a generic response from the web server. WordPress can be running into a PHP fatal error, a rewrite-rule problem, a resource limit, or damaged files, but the status code itself does not distinguish among them. WordPress’s Advanced Administration guidance notes that there can be many reasons for an internal server error.

Start by defining the scope. Does the public site fail, does only /wp-admin fail, or does one operation such as saving a post, uploading an image, or activating a plugin trigger the response? A failure immediately after one change is useful evidence, but it is not proof until the logs connect that change to a specific error.

Write down the full URL, the action that produced the error, whether the problem affects logged-in users or everyone, and the exact time including the server’s time zone. Reproduce the error once after recording the time. That timestamp lets you and your host correlate the request with the web-server and PHP logs instead of searching through unrelated warnings.

Use this order to minimize risk

  1. Capture the symptom. Record the URL, affected area, action, and one reproduction timestamp.
  2. Read logs and use Recovery Mode. Treat the fatal-error text and timestamp as your primary evidence.
  3. Isolate plugins. Deactivate all plugins through the dashboard, or rename the plugins directory when the dashboard is unavailable.
  4. Isolate the theme. Switch to a current default theme, using a directory rename if necessary.
  5. Test .htaccess. Rename it temporarily, then regenerate rewrite rules through Permalinks if the site returns.
  6. Check PHP and memory. Match versions and limits to the requirements shown by the logs and by your installed WordPress components.
  7. Repair core files. Replace only the WordPress distribution files when evidence points to corruption or missing files.
  8. Escalate with evidence. Ask the host to inspect configuration, permissions, worker or resource limits, and server logs when the tests do not restore service.

Before you change files or settings

  • Make a backup of the database and the files you will touch. If the site is down, use the host’s backup or snapshot facility if available.
  • Keep a change log: note the original directory or filename, the new temporary name, the time, and the result of each reload.
  • Do not delete a plugin, theme, or configuration file as a first test. Renaming or deactivating preserves settings and makes a rollback possible.
  • Use a private browser window or a separate device when checking the result, because a cached error page can outlive the server problem.
  • Make one change at a time. If you rename three directories at once, you will not know which component caused or fixed the error.

Read the logs and WordPress Recovery Mode first

Logs are the shortest path from a generic 500 response to a diagnosis. Check the web server’s error log and the PHP error log around the reproduction timestamp. Hosting control panels commonly expose these under an error-log, metrics, or PHP section; the exact menu name depends on the provider. If you have shell or SFTP access, ask the host where those logs are stored rather than guessing a path.

When WordPress records a fatal error, inspect wp-content/debug.log if debugging was already enabled. A useful entry normally contains the PHP error type, the file and line that failed, and a stack trace or plugin/theme path. Preserve the surrounding lines before changing anything. A path such as wp-content/plugins/example-plugin/ points your first test toward that plugin; a path under the active theme points toward the theme or custom code. A message about exhausted memory, an incompatible PHP function, permissions, or a missing core file points to a different branch.

WordPress Recovery Mode is automatically activated for fatal PHP errors during a regular page load. When offered, follow its link, sign in, and inspect the component WordPress identifies. Recovery Mode can let you reach the dashboard while the faulty plugin or theme is paused for your session. Use that access to deactivate or update the identified component, then test a normal logged-out request. Recovery Mode is a diagnostic and recovery aid, not a substitute for reading the underlying log.

Isolate plugins without losing their settings

When the dashboard still opens

  1. Go to Plugins → Installed Plugins.
  2. Select all active plugins, choose Deactivate, and apply the action.
  3. Open the front end and repeat the action that produced the 500.
  4. If the error disappears, reactivate plugins individually, testing after each activation.
  5. When one activation brings the 500 back, leave that plugin inactive and check its documented PHP and WordPress requirements, available updates, and the log entry for the failure.

WordPress support identifies plugin or theme function conflicts as frequent causes of error 500 and recommends deactivating all plugins when you have admin access. Reactivating one at a time turns that broad suspicion into a reproducible result. Do not reactivate everything simultaneously, because the conflict may involve an interaction between two plugins.

When /wp-admin is unavailable

  1. Connect with SFTP, FTP, or the hosting file manager.
  2. Open the WordPress installation’s wp-content directory.
  3. Rename plugins to a temporary name such as plugins.disabled.
  4. Reload the front end and, if possible, /wp-admin.
  5. If the site returns, restore the directory name to plugins. WordPress will see the plugins again as inactive; activate them individually from the dashboard.

Renaming the directory does not erase plugin settings stored in the database or files. It simply prevents WordPress from loading the plugins while you test. If the 500 remains with the directory renamed, plugins are not the only failing layer; continue to the theme and configuration tests.

Test the active theme

With dashboard access

Go to Appearance → Themes and activate a current default WordPress theme. Reload the failing URL and repeat the action. If the 500 disappears, update or repair the previous theme and inspect its compatibility with your PHP version and WordPress release. Custom theme code can produce the same fatal errors as a plugin, especially after a PHP change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Without dashboard access

  1. Use SFTP, FTP, or the host’s file manager to open wp-content/themes.
  2. Identify the directory of the active theme from the log or from your site’s configuration.
  3. Rename that directory, for example to theme-name.disabled.
  4. Reload the site. WordPress should fall back to an installed default theme.
  5. Once you regain access, install or restore a compatible theme and select it normally.

This fallback works only if a usable default theme is present. If no default theme is installed, upload one through a trusted WordPress package or ask the host for help; do not overwrite the entire themes directory.

Check .htaccess and regenerate rewrite rules

A damaged or incompatible root .htaccess can cause a 500 before WordPress handles the request. This is especially plausible after manually editing rewrite rules, moving the site, or changing server configuration.

  1. In the WordPress document root, locate .htaccess. Enable display of hidden files in the file manager if it is not visible.
  2. Rename it to a backup such as .htaccess.backup-2026-10-15. Do not delete it.
  3. Reload the failing URL and test both the front end and /wp-admin.
  4. If the site recovers and you can open the dashboard, go to Settings → Permalinks and click Save Changes without changing the selected structure. WordPress will regenerate its rewrite rules.
  5. If regeneration fails or the new file is immediately rejected, ask the host to verify that the server’s rewrite module, commonly mod_rewrite on Apache, is enabled and correctly configured.

Do not copy an .htaccess file from another site. Rules depend on the server, installation path, and other directives. Keep the renamed backup until normal requests, permalinks, and administration all work.

Match PHP compatibility and memory limits

PHP version compatibility

Use the log to identify whether the failure comes from an unsupported PHP function, a parse error, or a library incompatibility. Then compare the PHP version selected by the host with the requirements of your WordPress version, active theme, and plugins. A version that works for one site can break another when older code uses removed or changed PHP behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Change PHP through the host’s PHP-version selector or ask hosting technical support to do it. Record the original version so you can roll back if the change introduces a different error. Test the front end, /wp-admin, saving content, and any critical integration after the change; a successful home-page load alone is not enough.

Memory limits are two different settings

WordPress distinguishes WP_MEMORY_LIMIT from the higher WP_MAX_MEMORY_LIMIT. The first governs ordinary front-end requests; the second is used for administration tasks such as updates, imports, and image processing. Raising one does not automatically raise the other, and the host’s PHP memory_limit can cap both.

WordPress Support gives 128M as an example memory limit in 2024 guidance. It is an example, not a universal target or a guarantee that a 500 will be solved at that value. Use the fatal-error message and the host’s configured limits to decide whether memory is actually exhausted. Ask the host to confirm the effective PHP limit if a value in wp-config.php appears to have no effect.

Change only the setting your evidence requires, keep a copy of the original configuration, and retest the operation that failed. If increasing memory merely moves the failure to a worker, process, or account resource limit, the host must inspect those server-side limits.

Repair corrupted or missing WordPress core files

Core-file replacement is appropriate when logs identify a missing or corrupted WordPress file and plugin, theme, PHP, and rewrite tests do not explain the failure. It is not a general-purpose reset.

  1. Back up wp-config.php and the entire wp-content directory.
  2. Obtain the WordPress distribution that matches your installed version, or use the official update procedure from a clean package.
  3. Replace the core distribution files and directories, but do not overwrite wp-config.php or remove wp-content.
  4. Leave the wp-content directory, uploads, plugins, themes, and custom configuration intact.
  5. Reload the site and check the dashboard for a database-update prompt. Follow it only after confirming the files and backup are correct.

Never replace files selectively based on a random download or delete the installation to start over. A mistaken overwrite can remove configuration, uploads, or custom code and create a larger outage.

When a 500 appears after a specific change

After installing or updating a plugin

Use the timestamp and the plugin path in the fatal-error log. Deactivate all plugins or rename the plugins directory, confirm recovery, then reactivate one plugin at a time. If the same plugin fails on activation, leave it inactive, check its stated PHP and WordPress requirements, and contact its developer with the complete error text rather than only the status code.

After changing .htaccess

Restore the last known-good backup or use the rename test. If the site returns, regenerate rules through Settings → Permalinks and ask the host to check rewrite-module support before adding custom directives again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After changing PHP

Compare the old and new PHP versions, then use the logs to identify the incompatible component. Rolling back to the previous version can restore service temporarily, but it does not fix outdated code. Plan an update of the affected plugin or theme and retest on a supported PHP version.

Know when to contact hosting support

Escalate when you cannot access server or PHP logs, cannot use SFTP or the file manager, or when the error persists after plugin, theme, .htaccess, PHP, memory, and core-file checks. Also escalate immediately if the log mentions account-level process limits, denied permissions you cannot change, a failing PHP handler, database-server errors, or web-server configuration.

Send a concise evidence bundle:

  • The exact URL and whether the front end, /wp-admin, or one action fails.
  • The reproduction timestamp with time zone.
  • The complete error message and several nearby log lines, with passwords, API keys, and personal data removed.
  • Changes already tested, including the original and temporary names of renamed directories or files.
  • The active PHP version, the effective memory limit if known, and whether the problem affects all visitors or only logged-in users.

Ask the host to check PHP configuration, file and directory permissions, worker and account resource limits, rewrite support, and the server error log for the recorded timestamp. Those checks require server-level visibility that a WordPress administrator often does not have.

What not to do during recovery

  • Do not repeatedly refresh a failing form or checkout if it might submit an order or duplicate a transaction.
  • Do not delete all plugins, themes, or uploads to make the error disappear; deletion destroys evidence and can remove settings or content.
  • Do not paste credentials or private log data into a public support forum.
  • Do not raise memory limits indefinitely. If the host caps PHP memory, configuration edits will not bypass that cap and can hide the real resource problem.
  • Do not assume a successful homepage load proves the site is fixed. Test administration, permalinks, media uploads, and the operation that originally failed.

Verification checklist after the site returns

  1. Open the front end in a private window and test several ordinary pages.
  2. Sign in to /wp-admin, open the dashboard, and confirm that the identified plugin or theme remains in the intended state.
  3. Save a draft, update a harmless test page, and verify that the request completes.
  4. Open an existing media item and perform a small upload if image processing was involved in the original failure.
  5. Visit a post or page with a custom permalink and confirm it does not return another server error.
  6. Review the logs again for new fatal errors at the verification times.
  7. Remove only temporary backup names after you have a current backup and are certain they are no longer needed; retain a dated copy of the original configuration when practical.

A 500 error is fixed when the failing request works under normal conditions and the logs no longer show the same underlying fault—not merely when one cached error page disappears.
