Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The acrosup64.dll message usually indicates a damaged or mismatched Adobe Acrobat or Acrobat Reader installation, most often appearing as Windows Installer Error 2753 during setup. Start with Acrobat’s built-in repair option. If repair is unavailable or fails, remove the damaged installation with Adobe’s Cleaner Tool, restart Windows, and reinstall the current official 64-bit Acrobat installer on the local system drive. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website or overwrite Acrobat files manually.
What the acrosup64.dll message means
acrosup64.dll is associated with the Acrobat and Acrobat Reader installation. The wording can vary, but readers commonly encounter one of these messages:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- “The file acrosup64.dll is not marked for installation.”
- “Error 2753” while installing or updating Acrobat Reader.
- “Acrobat failed to load its core DLL.”
These messages do not normally mean that downloading one loose DLL file will solve the problem. Windows Installer keeps file registration, product versions and installation state together. A missing or corrupted file, a version mismatch, an incorrect installation path, restricted permissions or other damaged application files can therefore produce the same visible error.
The timing of the failure determines the best first move:
#1 Best Overall
| When it happens | Most useful starting point | Likely next branch |
|---|---|---|
| During an Acrobat or Reader installation | Close Adobe processes, then retry or repair the existing installation | Use Adobe’s Cleaner Tool and reinstall if repair fails |
| When an existing Acrobat installation opens | Repair from Control Panel | Check compatibility mode, permissions and installation location |
| When Acrobat opens and then crashes | Test plug-ins, Protected View, antivirus interference and runtime requirements | Collect crash details and escalate if the tests do not help |
| After installation to a mapped or network drive | Move to a local-system-drive installation | Perform a clean removal and reinstall if files are already damaged |
Before changing the installation
Record the exact wording before dismissing the dialog. Also note whether the product is Acrobat or Acrobat Reader, whether the failure occurs during installation or launch, and whether Acrobat was previously installed on the computer. Those details determine whether you should repair an existing product or remove it before installing again.
Save open documents and close Acrobat windows. If an installer appears stuck, do not immediately delete files from the Adobe folders. First close the application and prepare to stop any Adobe processes that remain in memory.
Repair acrosup64.dll problems in the least disruptive order
1. End remaining Adobe processes
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Review the running processes for Acrobat, Acrobat Reader and other Adobe entries.
- Select an Adobe process that remains after you closed the application and choose End task.
- Close Task Manager and retry the operation that produced the error.
A process that did not exit cleanly can keep an installer file locked. Ending it does not repair a damaged installation, but it removes that temporary obstruction before you try the supported repair options.
2. Run Acrobat’s Repair option
- Open Control Panel.
- Go to Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Acrobat Reader in the installed-program list.
- Choose Repair when that option is available and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Restart Windows when the repair completes, then test Acrobat again.
Repair is the first supported action because it can restore damaged application files without immediately removing the entire product. If the Repair command is missing, stops with another error or leaves the acrosup64.dll message unchanged, continue with a clean removal rather than repeatedly running the same failed installer.

3. Confirm the installation is on the local system drive
Adobe states that Acrobat must be installed on the local system drive. A mapped or network drive is not supported and can lead to DLL-loading errors. If Acrobat was installed to a mapped share, network location or other nonlocal path, repair may continue to fail even when the files appear to be present.
Use the product’s installed-program information or the installer’s destination choice to identify the location. Plan the replacement installation on the Windows system drive. Do not simply copy acrosup64.dll from another computer; the file may belong to a different Acrobat build and still be registered incorrectly.

4. Check Windows compatibility and permissions
Verify that your Windows edition is supported by the Acrobat release you are installing. An unsupported operating-system configuration can prevent setup or launch even when the DLL itself is intact.
Rank #3
Also check that Acrobat has not been forced into compatibility mode:
- Right-click the Acrobat or Reader shortcut or executable and choose Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- If Run this program in compatibility mode for is selected, clear it unless Adobe specifically instructed you to use that mode.
- Apply the change and test the application.
Restricted permissions can block registration and replacement of installation files. Use an account with the permissions required by your organization, and try running the installer with administrator privileges when appropriate. If the computer is managed by an employer or school, an administrator may need to perform the repair or approve the installation.
5. Remove a damaged installation with Adobe’s Cleaner Tool
Use this branch when Repair fails, the product is only partially installed, or repeated setup attempts produce Error 2753. Adobe’s supported cleanup sequence removes Acrobat and the Creative Cloud desktop app with Adobe’s Cleaner Tool, then restarts Windows.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Uninstall Acrobat and the Creative Cloud desktop app as directed by Adobe’s support instructions.
- Run Adobe’s Cleaner Tool and select the products it identifies for removal.
- Restart Windows after the cleanup completes.
- Remove leftover Adobe folders only where Adobe’s instructions specifically direct you to do so.
Do not improvise by deleting every Adobe folder or editing the registry. Leftover files can matter, but deleting unrelated folders can damage other Adobe applications and make recovery harder. If the Cleaner Tool reports that it cannot remove a component, record the message and restart before trying the official reinstall.

6. Reinstall the current official 64-bit installer
- Download the current official Acrobat 64-bit installer from Adobe.
- Run the installer after Windows has restarted from the cleanup.
- Choose a destination on the local Windows system drive, not a mapped or network drive.
- Allow the installer the permissions it needs; use administrator privileges when your account or Windows security prompts require them.
- Let setup finish before launching Acrobat or starting another Adobe installer.
A clean reinstall replaces the application files and rebuilds their installation state together. It is different from copying a DLL because it restores the version of every related component that belongs to that Acrobat release.
If Acrobat installs but crashes when it starts
An acrosup64.dll-related message can overlap with a launch failure. If Acrobat now installs but closes, freezes or reports that it cannot load its core DLL, use Adobe’s launch and crash troubleshooting flow rather than repeating the installer indefinitely.
Test third-party plug-ins
A third-party plug-in can prevent Acrobat from completing startup even when the core files are repaired. Temporarily test Acrobat without those plug-ins, following Adobe’s instructions for your installed release. If the application starts normally, add plug-ins back one at a time to identify the incompatible component.

Adobe’s troubleshooting guidance includes testing Protected View and possible antivirus interference. Security controls can block a file or process that Acrobat needs during launch. Review the security product’s events and follow your organization’s policy when testing; re-enable protection after any controlled test. Do not treat a security warning as proof that Acrobat is infected, and do not leave protection disabled as a permanent workaround.

Verify Visual C++ runtime requirements
Adobe also identifies Visual C++ runtime requirements as a possible launch dependency. If repair and reinstall have not helped, use Adobe’s documented runtime checks for the Acrobat version you installed. A runtime problem requires repairing or installing the required Microsoft component, not replacing acrosup64.dll with an unrelated copy.
Which path should you choose?
- Existing Acrobat opens and the error is occasional: close Adobe processes and run Repair from Programs and Features.
- Repair is unavailable or fails: use Adobe’s Cleaner Tool, restart Windows and reinstall the current official 64-bit package.
- The product was installed on a network or mapped drive: plan a reinstall on the local system drive.
- The installer fails before completion: check compatibility mode, permissions and any remaining Adobe processes before cleaning the installation.
- Acrobat installs but crashes on launch: test plug-ins, Protected View, antivirus interference and Visual C++ runtime requirements.
What not to do
- Do not download
acrosup64.dllfrom a third-party DLL repository. - Do not overwrite Acrobat’s files manually with a DLL copied from another PC or another Acrobat version.
- Do not assume that a successful file copy repaired Windows Installer registration or the product’s version relationships.
- Do not install Acrobat to a mapped or network drive when troubleshooting DLL-loading errors.
- Do not keep rerunning a failed installer without recording the exact message and checking whether a partial installation remains.
A standalone DLL can be the wrong version, leave MSI registration unresolved and conceal the underlying damaged installation. Adobe’s supported route is repair, Cleaner Tool cleanup when necessary, and reinstalling from the official installer.
When to escalate to Adobe
If the repair-and-reinstall sequence does not resolve the problem, prepare diagnostics before contacting support. Capture the exact error text, your Acrobat and Windows versions, installer logs and any crash details. Include whether Acrobat was previously installed, where it was installed and which step failed.

Use Adobe Customer Care or post in the Adobe Acrobat Community with that information. The launch and crash guidance directs users to collect these details when repair and reinstall do not resolve the issue. Providing the original Error 2753 wording is more useful than reporting only that “the DLL is missing,” because the same filename can appear in different installation and launch scenarios.
As an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues, including broken system elements and shared DLL files, and includes an app-crash log and settings checks. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary, and no tool repairs every crash. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, with a free trial by category of at least two days before a paid subscription.
Bottom line
acrosup64.dll is normally an Acrobat installation component, not a file you should source separately. End stuck Adobe processes, use Control Panel’s Repair command, verify a local-drive installation and remove compatibility or permission obstacles. When those steps fail, Adobe’s Cleaner Tool followed by a current official 64-bit reinstall is the supported reset. Persistent launch crashes require plug-in, Protected View, antivirus and runtime checks, followed by diagnostics for Adobe support.
