Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf Windows shows “The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b)”, repair the affected program and its official prerequisites first. The code 0xc000007b means STATUS_INVALID_IMAGE_FORMAT: Windows found an executable or DLL whose format or architecture does not fit what the program expects, or a required dependency is damaged. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website. Confirm the exact hexadecimal code, use the program’s own repair or reinstall tools, then repair Windows with SFC and DISM if the problem affects more than one application or survives the application repair.
What “the application was unable to start correctly” means
The sentence in the Windows dialog is generic. It can appear with several status codes, so the number matters more than the wording. This guide applies specifically to 0xc000007b. If your dialog shows a different code, the cause and repair path may be different.

0xc000007b is associated with STATUS_INVALID_IMAGE_FORMAT. Windows’ loader checks an application and the libraries it needs before the program window appears. A 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch, a damaged Visual C++ or DirectX component, corrupted application files, or a damaged Windows component can stop that check. The application may therefore fail before it has a chance to display its own error message.

The scope of the failure is an important clue:
- One program fails: start with that program’s launcher, files, and documented prerequisites.
- Several unrelated programs fail: investigate Windows system files and recent system changes after checking the code.
- Only a game fails after an update: use the launcher’s file verification and any official anti-cheat or compatibility repair before changing Windows files.
Record the error before troubleshooting
Write down the complete dialog, including the hexadecimal code, application name, and any module or file name shown. Also note the application version, Windows version, whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit, and what changed immediately before the failure. A screenshot is useful because a later reinstall can remove the original wording.

If Event Viewer names a module such as ntdll.dll, treat that as a clue about where the failure was reported, not proof that the file itself should be replaced. The loader may report a system module even when the incompatible file is an application dependency.
Use this repair order
The sequence below moves from the most targeted, reversible fixes to broader Windows repairs. Stop when the application opens normally; changing additional components after a successful repair adds risk without adding benefit.
- Restart Windows. A pending update or an incomplete installer transaction can leave a program and its dependencies out of sync. After restarting, install pending Windows updates and restart again if Windows requests it.
- Repair or reinstall the affected application from its official installer or launcher. Prefer a built-in Repair option. If none exists, uninstall and reinstall using the vendor’s current installer. Back up local saves, profiles, or custom settings first when the program stores them outside a cloud account.
- Verify files when the launcher provides that function. This is especially relevant for games. Verification replaces missing or altered program files without requiring you to download individual DLLs.
- Install or repair the prerequisites listed by the application vendor. Check Visual C++ Redistributables, legacy DirectX components, and .NET requirements. Match the package architecture to the application, not simply to the architecture of Windows.
- Run System File Checker. Use an elevated Command Prompt and let the scan complete before closing the window.
- Run DISM if SFC cannot repair files. Keep the internet connection available while DISM restores the Windows component store, then reboot and run SFC again if necessary.
- Check the vendor’s support page. Look for a compatibility patch, launcher repair, anti-cheat repair, or a newly required redistributable for your exact application version.
- Escalate with complete diagnostics. Give support the code, application and Windows versions, Event Viewer details, and the steps that already failed.
Repair the application and its launcher
Use an official Repair or Verify command
Open the program’s official launcher and look for a menu such as Repair, Verify files, or Scan and repair. The exact label differs by vendor. Allow the operation to finish, then restart Windows and launch the program from the same launcher. Do not interrupt verification while files are being replaced.
If the application is installed through Windows’ Apps settings and offers a repair control, use that before uninstalling. A repair normally preserves user data, while an uninstall can remove settings or locally stored saves depending on the program.
Reinstall cleanly when repair does not work
Download the installer only from the application vendor or the store where you obtained the program. Close the application and its launcher, uninstall it through the normal Windows or store interface, restart, and install the current version. If the vendor documents a separate launcher or anti-cheat repair, run that tool after installation. Avoid manually deleting Windows system folders or replacing shared DLLs.
Choose the correct Visual C++ and DirectX components
A 64-bit edition of Windows can run both 32-bit and 64-bit applications. That does not mean a 64-bit runtime can satisfy a 32-bit program. The application’s architecture determines which Visual C++ Redistributable it needs.
| Situation | What to install or repair | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows | The vendor-required x86 Visual C++ Redistributable | The program loads 32-bit libraries; an x64 package alone may not provide them. |
| 64-bit application on 64-bit Windows | The vendor-required x64 Visual C++ Redistributable | The program expects 64-bit libraries. |
| Software that includes both 32-bit and 64-bit components | Both x86 and x64 packages when the vendor specifies both | A launcher, plug-in, or helper process may use a different architecture from the main executable. |
| Older game or multimedia program | The legacy DirectX components named by the vendor | Older titles can depend on optional DirectX files that are not supplied by the newest DirectX runtime alone. |
| Application with a documented .NET requirement | The .NET version and Windows feature specified by the vendor | A missing or disabled framework can prevent startup even when the executable is present. |
Use the versions and architectures named in the program’s documentation or installer. Installing a random “all-in-one” runtime bundle makes diagnosis harder and can introduce conflicting or untrusted files.

Run System File Checker (SFC)
SFC is appropriate when Windows components may be damaged, particularly if more than one unrelated application fails. Microsoft describes it as checking Windows system files for corruption and attempting to repair any files it finds.
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command exactly:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. The result normally says that no integrity violations were found, that corrupt files were repaired, or that some files could not be repaired. Restart Windows after a repair and test the affected application.
Use DISM when SFC cannot repair the system
If SFC reports that it could not fix some files, run Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) from the same elevated Command Prompt:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
DISM may take time and can appear to pause at a percentage while it works. Keep the internet connection active: Microsoft support guidance explains that DISM can download original system files from Microsoft’s servers while restoring the component store. When it finishes, reboot Windows and run sfc /scannow again. Test the application only after the second SFC pass completes.
SFC and DISM repair Windows components; they do not replace a broken application installation or supply a game’s private files. If the commands complete successfully but only one program still fails, return to that program’s launcher and prerequisite documentation.
Diagnose an architecture mismatch
The most characteristic technical cause of 0xc000007b is a binary-format mismatch. A program may be 32-bit while a manually copied library is 64-bit, or the reverse. A partially updated application can also contain files built for different releases.
- Use the application vendor’s documentation to identify whether the program is x86, x64, or a mixed installation.
- Install the matching Visual C++ architecture; on 64-bit Windows, do not assume x64 alone is sufficient.
- Let the official installer replace the application’s own DLLs instead of copying files from another computer.
- If the problem began immediately after a patch, check for a vendor compatibility update or launcher repair rather than forcing compatibility through unrelated system files.
Architecture errors are not solved by renaming a DLL, changing its extension, or placing a second copy in the Windows system directory. Those actions can create a new mismatch and make later support diagnostics less reliable.

When a game will not open
Launcher verification first
Run the game launcher’s file-verification command, allow it to redownload damaged files, and restart the computer. If the launcher has a separate repair option for its anti-cheat service, use the documented repair after verification.
Check game prerequisites
Install the Visual C++ x86 or x64 package and legacy DirectX components named by the game’s documentation. A modern 64-bit Windows installation can still need x86 components for an older 32-bit game.
Look for a game-specific fix
Search the game publisher’s support page for the exact error code, game version, Windows version, and any anti-cheat or launcher changes in the latest patch. If unrelated Windows applications open normally, keep the investigation focused on the game rather than replacing Windows DLLs.
When several applications fail
Multiple failures shift the probability toward Windows components, a failed update, or a shared runtime. Confirm that each dialog really shows 0xc000007b, restart, apply pending Windows updates, and run SFC followed by DISM in the order above. Retest two unrelated applications after the repair.
If only programs that use one particular runtime fail, reinstall that runtime from Microsoft or use the application vendors’ documented prerequisite installer. If failures continue across unrelated software, record Event Viewer’s application error details and contact Microsoft or the affected vendors with the full diagnostic record.
What not to do
- Do not download a single DLL from an unofficial download site. You cannot verify its architecture, build, provenance, or safety, and it may not be the dependency that failed.
- Do not use an “all-in-one” redistributable pack. It can install unnecessary or conflicting versions and obscures which prerequisite the application actually requires.
- Do not replace
ntdll.dllbecause Event Viewer mentions it. That file is part of Windows; replacing it manually can damage the operating system and does not identify the incompatible dependency. - Do not copy DLLs from another PC. Matching the filename is not enough; the build, architecture, and dependency chain must also match.
Compare the remedies before choosing one
| Remedy | Best clue | Architecture or dependency focus | Reversibility and risk | Provider |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Launcher repair or file verification | One application or game fails | Application files and bundled components | Usually low risk; preserves the installation when repair is available | Application vendor |
| Official reinstall | Repair cannot replace damaged files | Complete application package | Moderate; back up local saves and settings first | Application vendor or official store |
| Visual C++ repair or installation | Error follows a runtime or architecture mismatch | x86, x64, or both, as specified by the application | Generally reversible through installed-app management | Microsoft or application vendor |
| Legacy DirectX or documented .NET prerequisite | Older game or program names the component | Specific legacy component or framework version | Use only the documented package | Microsoft or application vendor |
| SFC | Several applications fail or Windows files may be corrupt | Protected Windows system files | Low user-data risk; requires elevation | Microsoft |
| DISM RestoreHealth | SFC cannot repair files | Windows component store | Low user-data risk; needs an internet connection and patience | Microsoft |
Escalate with useful evidence
If the error remains, provide support with a concise record rather than only the dialog’s first sentence:
- Exact hexadecimal code and full dialog text.
- Application name, edition, launcher, and version.
- Windows edition, version, and system architecture.
- Whether one application or many fail.
- Recent Windows, application, driver, or security-software changes.
- Results of launcher repair or verification, prerequisite repair, SFC, and DISM.
- The Event Viewer application error details, including the faulting module name, without deleting or replacing that module.
This information lets the vendor distinguish an incompatible application package from a shared Windows problem and prevents repeated advice to download unverified DLLs.
