The Windows 11 error 0xc0000142 means an application failed during initialization, usually because a DLL or another required Windows component could not load. The code does not identify one universal bad file. Start by checking whether one application fails or several Windows tools fail, then use the least disruptive fix for that scope: repair or reset one app, repair Windows components with DISM and SFC, isolate startup conflicts with a clean boot, or use Startup Repair in Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) when Windows or cmd.exe will not start.
What 0xc0000142 means
Windows displays 0xc0000142 when a process cannot complete its startup initialization. An application may depend on system DLLs, runtime components, configuration data, services or drivers. If one dependency fails to load, Windows can stop the application before its window appears.

The same status can occur with a single game or desktop program, with several unrelated programs, or with a core utility such as cmd.exe. That scope matters: a problem limited to one program points first to that program or its files, while failures across Windows tools justify system-component and recovery troubleshooting.

Do not download a DLL with the same name from a random website or edit the registry because the code alone cannot tell you which file, version or dependency is involved.

| What you observe | First choice | Why it fits | Risk and reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Only one installed app fails and Windows works normally | Repair the app, then Reset or reinstall it | Targets that app’s files and configuration without changing Windows globally | Repair is generally reversible; Reset or reinstall can remove app data or settings |
| Several apps or Windows tools fail, but you can open an elevated console | Run DISM, then SFC | Repairs the Windows component store and protected system files used by many programs | Windows changes are automated; allow each scan to finish before restarting |
| Apps work in a minimal startup but not during a normal boot | Perform a clean boot | Tests whether a non-Microsoft service or startup program blocks initialization | Reversible, but temporarily disables services and startup functionality |

Use WinRE and Startup Repair | Works outside the normal Windows session and addresses boot files, drivers and related startup problems | Recovery operations affect system startup; follow the on-screen choices carefully |
Restart once before making deeper changes. After the restart, launch the affected program again and record whether the failure is limited to it or also affects tools such as Settings, File Explorer or Command Prompt. Retest after every major change so you know which action altered the result.
1. Repair the affected application
Use Repair in Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the failing application, select its three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair when the button is available. Windows attempts to repair the app without removing its data.
- Restart the application and check whether it now initializes.
Repair and Reset are not offered for every application. If Repair is missing or has no effect, return to the same page and use Reset when available. Reset returns the app to its default state and can erase locally stored settings, sign-ins or other app data, so save or export anything the app stores locally first.
Traditional desktop software
Many Win32 programs do not expose Windows 11’s Repair and Reset buttons. Use the program’s own documented Repair, Modify or Reinstall option, if it provides one. Download an installer only from the software publisher or an administrator-managed source. Do not replace individual DLLs with files from an unofficial download site; a mismatched version can create another startup failure or introduce an untrusted file.

2. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
When more than one application fails, or the affected program relies on Windows components, use Microsoft’s supported sequence: DISM first, then System File Checker (SFC). DISM repairs the Windows component store and supplies repair files; SFC then scans protected system files and replaces corrupted copies from the cached store. Microsoft summarizes the relationship this way: “DISM provides the files required to repair your corrupted files.”
Run the commands in the documented order
- Open an elevated Command Prompt (Run as administrator).
- Type
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand press Enter. - Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the console or power off the PC while it is working.
- After DISM completes, type
sfc /scannowand press Enter. - Wait until SFC verification reaches 100 percent and reports its result.
- Restart Windows and launch the program that produced 0xc0000142.
The /Online option tells DISM to service the currently running Windows installation. The operation can take time, and the progress percentage may pause; a pause is not by itself evidence that the command has failed. Preserve the final messages if you need to escalate.
If Windows Update cannot provide the repair files
DISM normally obtains component files through Windows servicing. If it reports that the source files could not be found, Microsoft documents specifying a known-good repair source with /Source:<path> /LimitAccess. The source must match the installed Windows version. The exact command depends on the location and format of the matching source, so do not substitute an arbitrary ISO, another PC’s system folder or a different Windows edition.
What the results mean
- If DISM repairs the component store and SFC completes repairs, restart and test the original application.
- If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, restart before judging the result.
- If SFC says it found corruption but could not repair all files, keep the result and continue with the clean-boot or recovery steps rather than repeatedly downloading replacement DLLs.
- If either command cannot run because Windows will not start normally, use the WinRE path below.
3. Isolate background conflicts with a clean boot
A clean boot starts Windows with only essential drivers and startup programs. It is a diagnostic test: if the application starts in this state, a non-Microsoft service or startup app is a likely blocker. The test does not identify the culprit automatically; you narrow it down by restoring items in groups.
Configure the clean boot
- Search Windows for
msconfigand open System Configuration as an administrator. - Open the Services tab.
- Check Hide all Microsoft services. This prevents the next action from disabling core Microsoft services.
- Select Disable all.
- Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager.
- In Task Manager’s startup list, disable each enabled startup app. Record what you change.
- Close Task Manager, select OK in System Configuration, and restart.
- Launch the program that showed 0xc0000142.
Interpret the test
If the error disappears, restore services and startup apps in groups, restarting and testing after each group. When the failure returns, divide that group into smaller sets until you identify the conflicting item. Update, repair or uninstall the identified software using its publisher’s instructions.
If the error remains in a clean boot, the cause is less likely to be an ordinary third-party startup conflict. Proceed to the Windows component and recovery checks instead.

Return to normal startup
Clean-boot changes can temporarily remove expected functionality, including background utilities and synchronization programs. After testing, open msconfig, choose the normal startup configuration, re-enable the services and startup items you recorded, and restart. Change only the items needed for the diagnostic test; System Configuration should not be used casually to disable unknown Microsoft services.

4. Use WinRE and Startup Repair when Windows or cmd.exe will not open
Startup Repair belongs in Windows Recovery Environment when normal Windows startup is failing or core tools cannot launch. Microsoft says it attempts to correct missing or damaged system files, corrupted boot configuration data, incompatible drivers and registry errors. It is different from repairing one application: it works on startup components outside the normal desktop session.
Enter Windows Recovery Environment
If Windows fails to start repeatedly, WinRE may open automatically. From an accessible Windows session, you can also reach recovery options through the system’s recovery controls. If the installed recovery tools are inaccessible, use bootable Windows installation or recovery media on a USB drive to reach WinRE. The USB drive provides access to the recovery tools; it is not a guaranteed cure by itself.
Run Startup Repair
- In WinRE, select Troubleshoot.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Startup Repair.
- Choose the Windows installation if prompted and follow the restart instructions.
- After Windows starts, test the affected application and any core tools that previously failed.
If Startup Repair cannot correct the problem, return to Advanced options and use the available Command Prompt to run the DISM and SFC checks against the Windows installation as appropriate for the recovery environment. Drive letters can differ in WinRE, so identify the Windows volume before targeting offline files; do not assume it is C:.
5. Follow-up actions for common scenarios
Only a game or launcher fails
Start with the app’s Windows 11 Repair option or the publisher’s repair/reinstall process. If the game still fails while other programs run, check its documented prerequisites and installation integrity through the same publisher or launcher. Avoid copying DLLs from another computer because the file may not match the installed build or architecture.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Several unrelated programs fail after an update
Restart first, then run DISM followed by SFC. If the scans report unrepairable corruption, keep their final messages. A clean boot can distinguish a third-party service conflict from Windows component damage. If Windows itself becomes unstable or cannot start, move to WinRE and Startup Repair instead of repeatedly launching the failing programs.
cmd.exe itself shows 0xc0000142
Because Command Prompt is a Windows component, treat this as broader than a single app failure. Use another available elevated console only if Windows can provide one; otherwise enter WinRE from recovery options or bootable media and run Startup Repair. Once a normal session is restored, complete the DISM-then-SFC sequence and test Command Prompt again.
The error appears only during normal startup
Use the clean-boot procedure. A successful clean boot indicates that a disabled non-Microsoft service or startup app participates in the failure. Restore items methodically rather than enabling everything at once, so the conflicting item can be isolated and removed or repaired.
6. Avoid fixes that can make the problem worse
- Random DLL downloads: the status code does not identify a safe replacement file, and an unofficial DLL can be incompatible or unsafe.
- Registry “DLL fixes”: deleting or changing registry entries without knowing the dependency can prevent other programs or Windows from starting.
- Unverified optimizer tools: broad system changes can obscure the original cause and make recovery harder.
- Interrupting DISM or SFC: wait for each operation and for SFC verification to reach 100 percent before closing the console.
- Skipping data protection before Reset or reinstall: app data, saves and settings may not survive those operations.
- Leaving a clean boot in place: restore normal startup after the test so required services and startup programs work again.
7. When to escalate to Windows recovery options
Escalate when DISM and SFC cannot repair corruption, when Startup Repair fails repeatedly, or when Windows cannot remain stable long enough to complete diagnostics. Preserve the exact DISM and SFC result messages, note when the error began, and record whether it affects one app or many. Microsoft’s broader recovery choices can include an in-place repair installation or other recovery operations; select an option only after reviewing its effect on applications, files and settings.
An in-place repair installation is materially different from downloading a DLL: it refreshes Windows system components while following Microsoft’s installation requirements. Confirm that the installation media matches the installed Windows version and edition, and back up important files before any recovery operation.
