Windows error 1734, hexadecimal 0x6C6, has the symbolic name RPC_S_INVALID_BOUND and the message “The array bounds are invalid.” It is a Windows system/RPC status, not proof that a game’s source code contains a bad array declaration. The same status can be emitted by unrelated callers, so the reliable fix is to identify the command or application that produced it and then repair that component.
Use the decision tree below before changing registry values, deleting system files, or reinstalling a game. It separates RPC/network failures, servicing operations, a legacy Windows XP mapped-drive case, and long command-line arguments—the contexts in which this code has been documented.

What error 1734 means
Microsoft lists system error 1734 (decimal), 0x6C6 (hexadecimal), as RPC_S_INVALID_BOUND: “The array bounds are invalid.” The wording describes a status returned by Windows components that process a range or list of values. It does not, by itself, identify a programming mistake in a game, launcher, mod, or save file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a player, the practical question is not “Which array should I edit?” but “Which process returned 1734?” An RPC service, a deployment or repair command, an old Windows scripting API, and a command launched with unusually long arguments can all surface the same status. A fix that is appropriate for one caller can be irrelevant—or risky—for another.

First response: capture the context before changing anything
Write down the complete message and the event that preceded it. Include both forms of the code if they are shown: 1734 and 0x6C6. Record whether the error appeared while starting a game, connecting to a server, installing or updating software, running a repair command, mapping a drive, or launching a process.
- Note the exact caller. Copy the application name, command, script, launcher, scheduled task, or Windows dialog title. If a launcher starts a helper process, identify the helper as well.
- Record your Windows edition and build. Open Settings > System > About and note the edition and OS build. Windows XP-era behavior is materially different from current Windows 10 and Windows 11 behavior.
- Record recent changes. Include Windows updates, driver or launcher updates, new mapped drives, firewall changes, VPN or domain changes, and newly installed mods or tools.
- Reproduce once, deliberately. Repeat the action only after saving the message. Capture the application log, and for servicing operations collect the DISM and Windows Update logs before attempting repairs.
If the error occurs only in one game while other programs work, treat the game as the caller until its launcher, service, or network path proves otherwise. Do not assume that reinstalling the game can repair a Windows RPC configuration.
Use the caller to choose the correct branch
| Where 1734 appears | What to investigate first | Evidence strength | Risk and reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Remote connection, network service, domain action, or RPC-related utility | RPC services, Endpoint Mapper reachability, firewall rules, and port values | Microsoft RPC troubleshooting guidance | Service and firewall changes are reversible; document each original value |
| DISM or another Windows servicing operation | DISM output plus DISM and Windows Update logs; the accompanying servicing code | Microsoft servicing guidance and the related error context | Repairs can affect system files; use supported recovery media or an in-place repair when indicated |
WshNetwork.EnumNetworkDrives on Windows XP |
Mapped drives, especially a SharePoint mapping, and update history | Historical, context-specific report | Removing a mapping is reversible, but may interrupt applications that use it |
runas, PowerShell Start-Process, or a similar launcher |
Argument length and very large environment-variable expansions | Community report, not an official Windows limit | Restructuring arguments is low risk; preserve the original command first |
| Game launcher or another application with no obvious RPC, servicing, mapping, or command-line clue | Application logs and the process that emitted the status | Caller-dependent; 1734 alone is not diagnostic | Prefer logging and a clean retry over registry or system-file edits |
RPC and network fixes
Use this branch when the message appears during a remote connection, network authentication, domain operation, service-to-service request, or a game feature that depends on a local or remote RPC service. Microsoft states that RPC port configuration is invalid if a value is outside 0–65535 or cannot be interpreted.

1. Confirm the required RPC services
- Press Win+R, enter
services.msc, and press Enter. - Check Remote Procedure Call (RPC), RPC Endpoint Mapper, and DCOM Server Process Launcher. They should not be disabled. If one is stopped when it should be running, start it only if Windows permits the action.
- Do not change the startup type of core RPC services casually. Note each original setting so it can be restored if another application depends on it.
- Retry the original operation and note whether the same process returns 1734.
A service that cannot start, immediately stops, or shows a dependency error is a separate fault to resolve. Record that message rather than repeatedly restarting the service.
2. Test Endpoint Mapper reachability
RPC commonly begins through the Endpoint Mapper before a client is directed to a service endpoint. Check the path from the affected computer to the target computer, including name resolution, local network access, and any VPN or domain connection required by the application.
- For a remote target, verify that the target name resolves to the intended address and that the target is powered on and reachable.
- Check Windows Defender Firewall and any third-party firewall on both ends. A rule that blocks RPC or the negotiated endpoint can produce a caller-specific failure.
- If the operation works on a local machine but fails remotely, compare the two paths instead of changing the game or its files.
3. Validate configured RPC ports
Review the RPC port settings used by the affected service, firewall, or deployment tool. Every configured numeric value must be within 0 through 65535 and must be parseable as a number. Remove stray characters, blank substitutions, copied punctuation, and values that exceed the range. Microsoft’s guidance says that one invalid or uninterpretable value causes the entire configuration to be treated as invalid.

4. Separate local firewall problems from remote configuration problems
- Temporarily test from the same computer with the approved firewall profile and policy in place; do not permanently disable protection.
- If policy allows, create a narrowly scoped rule for the documented RPC service or port, limited to the required profile and remote addresses.
- Retest and then remove any temporary rule that did not solve the issue.
- Compare results from another client or network. A failure that follows the target indicates a server-side configuration or service problem; a failure limited to one client indicates local services, firewall, or name-resolution settings.
DISM and Windows servicing cases
If 1734 appears in DISM output, Windows Update servicing, component repair, or an image-management script, do not change “array” settings. The status is a symptom returned by the servicing path. In one documented case, the related output also included 0x800F0922; that accompanying code is more useful for choosing a servicing remedy than 1734 alone.
1. Capture the complete servicing output
- Run the same DISM operation once more only if you can save its complete output.
- Collect the DISM log and Windows Update log generated by that attempt.
- Write down the exact command, target image or Windows installation, edition, build, and whether the computer is managed by an organization.
- Preserve the first failure code, including any code that appears immediately before or after 1734.
2. Apply supported servicing guidance
Use current Microsoft servicing instructions for your supported Windows version and the specific accompanying error. The appropriate path may involve repairing the component store, correcting update prerequisites, or using installation media. Do not substitute a command from an older Windows release merely because it contains the same 1734 text.

3. Consider an in-place repair when servicing remains broken
When logs show persistent component corruption or update failure and ordinary supported repairs do not work, an in-place repair installation can be safer than deleting component-store files manually. Confirm edition and language compatibility, back up important data, and follow the supported procedure for your Windows build. A clean installation is a last resort because it changes applications and user state; it is not a targeted fix for error 1734.
Legacy Windows XP mapped-drive case
A historical report involving WshNetwork.EnumNetworkDrives on Windows XP associated 1734 with update KB982802 and a mapped SharePoint drive. Removing the problematic mapping was reported as a workaround. This is legacy, context-specific evidence—not a current universal fix and not a reason to remove every mapped drive on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
How to handle it safely
- Confirm that the failing caller is actually
WshNetwork.EnumNetworkDrivesand that the computer is an old Windows XP system. - List mapped drives and identify the mapping used by the affected script or SharePoint location.
- Close applications that depend on that drive and record its drive letter, path, and credentials arrangement.
- Disconnect only the suspected mapping, reproduce the script, and observe whether 1734 disappears.
- If the workaround succeeds, investigate the update and network compatibility issue before recreating the mapping. If it fails, restore the mapping and pursue the caller’s log instead of removing additional drives.
Long runas or Start-Process arguments
A community report connected 1734 with a long runas argument. The observation was around 995 characters, but it is not a Microsoft-guaranteed command-line limit. Treat it as a diagnostic clue, not a threshold that applies to every shell, Windows build, or launcher.

Reduce the command without losing information
- Save the original command and expand its environment variables so you can see the actual text passed to the process.
- Remove unnecessary switches, repeated paths, and duplicated environment-variable content.
- Move settings into a supported configuration file or script parameter when the application permits it.
- Launch a small test command with the same account and executable. Add arguments in groups until the failure returns.
- If a game launcher constructs the command, inspect its log or startup options rather than editing the executable.
Shortening arguments can reveal a separate quoting or permissions error. Record that new error; it identifies the next repair step more accurately than the original 1734 status.
If a game launcher shows the message
Games often sit on top of several Windows components: a launcher, update service, anti-cheat or helper process, cloud-save client, and network service. The visible game window may not be the process that returned 1734.
Identify the emitting process
- Check the launcher’s log directory and Windows Event Viewer at the exact time of the failure.
- Look for a child process name, service name, or command line in the log entry.
- Compare a direct launch with a launcher-mediated launch only when the publisher supports both methods.
- Note whether the failure occurs offline, only on one network, only after an update, or only for one Windows account.
Choose a proportionate game-side response
If logs point to a network service, follow the RPC branch. If they point to an updater or Windows servicing command, follow the DISM branch. If they show an oversized launch command, follow the argument branch. If no Windows caller is identified, use the game publisher’s supported log-collection and repair procedure; reinstalling files without identifying the caller may leave the underlying Windows condition unchanged.
What not to do
- Do not edit source-code array declarations based only on the wording of the Windows message.
- Do not apply a random registry “array bounds” tweak. The documented causes are caller-specific, and arbitrary edits can create new failures.
- Do not delete system, component-store, or game files before collecting logs and making a backup.
- Do not treat the community’s approximately 995-character observation as an official universal command-line limit.
- Do not remove all mapped drives because of a report tied specifically to Windows XP,
WshNetwork.EnumNetworkDrives, KB982802, and a SharePoint mapping. - Do not assume that an antivirus alert, malware infection, or unsafe game file is proven by error 1734 alone; the status message does not establish any of those conditions.
When to escalate
Escalate to your system administrator, game publisher, or Microsoft support channel when the caller is a managed domain service, the RPC endpoint belongs to another organization, DISM logs show repeated servicing failures, or the error persists after a supported repair. Include the full message, decimal and hexadecimal codes, Windows build, exact command or application, timestamps, relevant logs, and every change already tested. That package lets support distinguish a local configuration problem from a server-side or product defect.
