How to Fix the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) in Windows

A Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) is Windows stopping to prevent further damage after a serious error in a driver, hardware device, or system software. First photograph the stop code and any module name, then undo the most recent change, boot into Safe Mode if crashes repeat, and work through driver, update, disk-space, system-file, and recovery checks in that order. A single restart may be temporary; an identical code that returns needs investigation.

What a blue screen means

Microsoft also calls a BSOD a stop-code error, bug check, kernel error, or Blue Screen error. The screen normally shows a code such as PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA or MEMORY_MANAGEMENT, and sometimes names a driver or Windows module. Those details are diagnostic clues, not a complete diagnosis. As Microsoft puts it, “An unexpected restart might be caused by a hardware device, its driver, or software.”

Windows usually restarts automatically after collecting information. If the failure happened once and the computer now works normally, monitor it rather than making several unrelated changes at once. Repeated crashes with the same stop code, crashes during a particular game or task, or a machine that cannot complete startup justify the procedure below.

Do this first: preserve evidence and protect your files

  1. Record the stop code. Photograph the screen or write the exact text and any file name shown below it. Note whether the crash happened while starting Windows, waking from sleep, launching a game, installing an update, or connecting a device.
  2. List recent changes. Write down hardware, graphics or chipset drivers, Windows updates, game updates, utilities, and new applications installed immediately before the first crash. This history determines whether rollback, removal, or restore is the safest first move.
  3. Back up accessible data. Copy irreplaceable files to another drive or a trusted cloud location before running repair commands, System Restore, or Reset this PC. If the disk is failing, repeated restarts can make recovery harder.
  4. Stop if the machine is hot, making unusual noises, or losing files. Power it down and arrange manufacturer or professional service instead of repeatedly forcing restarts.

Undo the newest hardware or software change

Remove recently added hardware

Shut down completely, unplug the computer, and disconnect a device added shortly before the crashes. Examples include a USB hub, storage device, expansion card, webcam, or controller. On a desktop, do not open the case unless you are comfortable following the manufacturer’s electrostatic-safety instructions. Reconnect only essential peripherals and start Windows. If the BSOD stops, reconnect devices one at a time to identify the trigger.

  • Lifetime Warranty: We'll replace anything that breaks, as long as you own it.

Undo a recent application or update

If the crash began immediately after an application, game utility, antivirus component, or Windows update, uninstall that item from Settings > Apps > Installed apps or use the applicable update-uninstall option in Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). Keep a record of what you remove so it can be reinstalled only after stability returns.

Start Windows in Safe Mode when crashes recur

Safe Mode loads a limited set of Windows files and drivers. It is useful when normal startup crashes before you can work, because a problem that disappears there is less likely to be caused by default settings, basic drivers, or essential services.

Enter Safe Mode through WinRE

  1. From the sign-in screen or Start menu, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart. If Windows cannot reach that screen, interrupt startup two or three times with the power button; Windows should open Automatic Repair and then WinRE.
  2. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  3. At the numbered Startup Settings screen, press 4 or F4 for Safe Mode, or 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking when you genuinely need network access.

Use the same Startup Settings screen’s Disable automatic restart on system failure option when a reboot loop hides the stop code. Photograph the code on the next crash. Safe Mode is an isolation step, not a permanent operating mode; restart normally after each test unless the next procedure specifically requires Safe Mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check drivers and devices

Use Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand categories related to the evidence: Display adapters for a graphics crash, Network adapters for Wi-Fi or Ethernet failures, and Storage controllers, Sound, video and game controllers, Bluetooth, or USB categories for the corresponding device.
  3. Look for a yellow warning icon. Right-click the suspected device, choose Properties, and read the General and Driver tabs for status, provider, date, and version.
  4. Choose Update driver and allow Windows to search, or install the current driver supplied by the computer or device manufacturer. Restart and test the activity that previously crashed.

Roll back, reinstall, or disable

If the BSOD began after a driver update, open the device’s Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver when available. If rollback is unavailable or ineffective, choose Uninstall device, restart, and install a known-good official package. Disabling a nonessential device temporarily can confirm whether it is responsible; do not disable storage, display, or security hardware permanently without a recovery plan.

Driver version matters. Match the package to the exact computer model, Windows edition, device, and architecture. A generic module is not universally compatible, particularly for laptop graphics, storage controllers, and motherboard firmware-related devices.

Install Windows updates and make room for system operations

Open Settings > Windows Update, install pending updates, restart when requested, and check again until no additional updates are offered. Also update an application only after confirming that Windows itself is stable; changing several layers at once makes the cause harder to identify.

Check free space in Settings > System > Storage or in File Explorer. Windows and applications need room for swap files, temporary work, and updates. Microsoft’s practical guidance is to keep roughly 10% to 15% of the system drive free, although the exact requirement varies with system configuration. Remove or move large personal files and uninstall software you no longer use; do not delete unknown files from Windows folders.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repair damaged Windows components

Back up important files before repairing the image or system files. These commands can take time, and a restart during an interruption can complicate recovery.

  1. Open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) from the Start menu. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  2. Run this command and wait for it to finish:
    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  3. After DISM completes, run:
    sfc /scannow
  4. Restart Windows and repeat the workload that triggered the BSOD.

DISM repairs the Windows component image that supplies system files; System File Checker (SFC) checks protected files and replaces corrupted copies. If either command reports that it could not complete, record the exact message, restart, and run it once more from an administrator console rather than repeatedly interrupting it.

Use a clean boot to isolate background software

A clean boot starts Windows with essential drivers while giving you control over which third-party services and startup programs load. It is more configurable than Safe Mode and is useful when the crash disappears in Safe Mode but returns during a normal desktop session.

  1. Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
  2. On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then select Disable all. Hiding Microsoft services first prevents you from disabling core Windows services by mistake.
  3. Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager. Disable enabled third-party startup items, then close Task Manager.
  4. Select OK in System Configuration and restart.
  5. Test the computer. If the BSOD stops, re-enable services and startup items in small groups, restarting between groups, until the failing software is identified. Update or uninstall that software.
  6. When finished, return to msconfig, select Normal startup on the General tab, and restart so ordinary services load again.

Choose the right recovery option

System Restore for a recent change

System Restore returns system files, drivers, registry settings, and installed programs to an earlier restore point; it is appropriate when crashes began after a driver, update, or application change and a suitable point exists. It is not a substitute for a personal-file backup, and it does not erase your documents. In WinRE choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore, select a dated point, review affected programs, and complete the wizard. If Windows still starts, search for Create a restore point, open System Restore, and follow the same review process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Startup Repair when Windows will not boot

From WinRE select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair > Restart. Startup Repair attempts to correct missing or damaged system files, corrupted boot configuration data (BCD), a damaged master boot record (MBR), incompatible drivers, and certain registry errors. It is aimed at startup failure, not every cause of a BSOD. If BitLocker is enabled, WinRE may request the recovery key.

Reset this PC only after backup

Reset this PC is a deeper recovery choice when troubleshooting has not restored a usable installation. Back up personal files first and make sure you can retrieve the BitLocker recovery key. Review whether the selected reset option keeps personal files or removes them, and understand that applications and many settings will need to be restored. A reset can repair software corruption, but it cannot fix defective RAM, storage, power delivery, or a motherboard.

Investigate memory and other hardware faults

A memory-related stop code such as MEMORY_MANAGEMENT, repeated crashes under load, or a Device Manager condition indicating low or faulty memory warrants a hardware branch. Shut down and test one change at a time. If the computer has multiple removable RAM modules, consult the manufacturer’s service instructions before reseating or testing them individually. Do not assume any module will fit: match laptop versus desktop form factor, DDR generation, capacity limits, and supported speed to the machine’s specifications. Microsoft lists uninstalling and reinstalling a corrupt driver and installing additional RAM among possible resolutions, but additional memory is useful only when the hardware is compatible and the underlying fault is understood.

Crashes that continue in Safe Mode and a clean boot, recur with a hardware-specific stop code, or accompany disk errors, random shutdowns, overheating, or inaccessible files point beyond ordinary software repair. Faulty storage, memory, power components, or the motherboard may require manufacturer diagnostics or professional service. Preserve the stop-code photographs and your list of changes for the technician.

Safe Mode, clean boot, and recovery: which option fits?

Option Isolation or purpose Use it when Impact
Safe Mode Loads a minimal set of Windows drivers and files Normal startup repeatedly crashes or a reboot loop hides the code Temporary limited environment; networking is optional
Clean boot Loads essential drivers while letting you control third-party services and startup programs Safe Mode is stable but normal Windows crashes Requires re-enabling services and startup items after testing
System Restore Reverts system state to a selected restore point A recent update, driver, or app preceded the failures May remove programs and drivers installed after the point; personal files are not its target
Startup Repair Attempts boot-file, BCD, MBR, driver, and selected registry repairs Windows cannot start normally Runs from WinRE and may request a BitLocker key
DISM and SFC Repairs the Windows image and protected system files Corruption is suspected after software or update failures Use an elevated console and back up first
Reset this PC Reinstalls Windows with a selected personal-file option Other recovery steps fail and software corruption remains likely Applications and settings are removed; it cannot repair failed physical hardware

When to stop troubleshooting

  • The computer crashes even in Safe Mode and during a clean boot.
  • The same hardware-specific code returns after the correct driver is reinstalled or rolled back.
  • Windows cannot access important files, the storage device reports errors, or the machine overheats, loses power, or makes abnormal noises.
  • You do not have a backup or the BitLocker recovery key required by WinRE.

At that point, stop repeated resets and forced shutdowns. Contact the PC manufacturer or Microsoft support, provide the exact stop code, module name, recent-change timeline, and the steps already completed. This information helps separate a driver problem from a failing memory module, storage device, power supply, or motherboard.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for more than 100 common Windows issues, tune settings that affect CPU, RAM and disk load, clean temporary and cache files, check selected Windows vulnerabilities and potentially unwanted apps, and provide tools such as a real-time boost, file shredder and crash log. It complements an antivirus rather than replacing one; results vary and no tool repairs every crash. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, with a free trial by category of at least two days followed by a paid subscription.
