Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe right fix depends on where the black screen occurs. If Windows still responds, treat this as a Warzone rendering, display-mode, shader, overlay, driver, or file problem. If the entire desktop is blank or frozen, troubleshoot Windows, the display driver, cable, monitor, and GPU before reinstalling the game.
Work through these fixes in order, starting with the lowest-risk checks.
First, identify which black screen you have
| Symptom | Likely category | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Black screen with sound | Fullscreen mode, shaders, overlays, display driver, or rendering failure | Try Alt + Enter, reset the graphics driver, then disable overlays |
| Black screen with a mouse cursor | Stalled game window, fullscreen transition, Explorer, or display-output problem | Try Alt + Tab, Task Manager, and Win + P |
| Black screen after the splash screen | Shaders, corrupted settings, overlays, drivers, or damaged files | Allow shader preloading to finish, then repair files |
| Black screen when entering a match | Shader compilation, graphics settings, VRAM pressure, or a game-side issue | Complete shaders, use basic display settings, and check Known Issues |
| Black screen followed by a crash or desktop return | A crash as well as a display problem | Repair files, disable utilities, update or roll back the driver, then report the crash |
| The entire Windows desktop is black | Windows display output, cable, monitor, GPU driver, or hardware | Use Microsoft’s blank-screen troubleshooting |
Try these fast recovery shortcuts
When the screen goes black, wait briefly, then test whether Windows is still responding:
- Press
Alt + Tabto switch to another window. - Press
Ctrl + Shift + Escto open Task Manager. If it opens, end Call of Duty or the launcher and start again. - Press
Win + Ctrl + Shift + Bto reset the Windows graphics driver. The screen may flicker or you may hear a beep. - Press
Win + P, pressPagain, and pressEnterto cycle Windows display-output modes. - Press
Alt + Enterto switch Warzone between fullscreen and windowed mode. - Use
Alt + F4if Warzone remains the active, responsive window.
If nothing responds, hold the power button only as a last resort. Repeated hard shutdowns are not a normal Warzone fix. If the desktop remains blank after restarting, stop troubleshooting the game and follow Microsoft’s display and Safe Mode guidance.

1. Let Warzone finish shader preloading
Shader preloading is one of the most important first-launch and post-update steps. Activision says that leaving the main menu can interrupt shader preloading and contribute to performance problems. That does not prove shaders cause every black screen, but an incomplete shader process is a plausible cause of launch and in-game rendering failures.
- Launch Warzone.
- Remain in the main menu while shader preloading or shader optimization runs.
- Do not repeatedly relaunch the game, change major graphics options, or exit to the desktop.
- Wait until the progress indicator reports completion. If it appears stalled, check whether the CPU or disk is still active before force-closing the game.
- Restart Warzone once preloading finishes.
Activision’s PC troubleshooting guide contains the current shader-preloading advice.
2. Disable overlays and background utilities
Temporarily close software that hooks into games or changes GPU behavior. Activision specifically identifies NZXT CAM, MSI Afterburner, and Razer Cortex as applications that may conflict with Warzone.
For a clean test, disable or exit:
- Discord overlay
- Xbox Game Bar
- NVIDIA App or GeForce overlay
- AMD Adrenalin overlay
- Steam overlay and any Battle.net overlay option
- MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner Statistics Server
- NZXT CAM, Razer Cortex, and potentially relevant Razer Synapse components
- OBS and other capture applications
- RGB, fan-control, hardware-monitoring, overclocking, and game-booster utilities
Restart Warzone after closing them. If the game works, re-enable utilities one at a time to identify the conflict. Do not permanently disable antivirus protection. If security software appears to block the game, use only a narrowly scoped exception for the legitimate game folder as a controlled test, then remove it if it makes no difference.

3. Repair or verify Warzone’s files
Battle.net
- Open Battle.net and select Call of Duty.
- Open the gear or options menu beside Play.
- Select Scan and Repair.
- Wait for the scan and any download to finish.
- Restart Battle.net and test Warzone.
Steam
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click Call of Duty and select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Relaunch after Steam completes the check.
Xbox app or Microsoft Store
For the PC Xbox-app installation, use the repair path Activision documents for damaged installations and certain 0x errors:
- Open Start → Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find Call of Duty, open its three-dot menu, and select Advanced options.
- Select Terminate.
- Under Reset, select Repair.
- Reinstall only if repair fails.
Activision documents this specifically for 0x errors, not as a confirmed universal black-screen fix. Its Known Issues page has the current instructions.
4. Update or roll back the graphics driver
Do not assume the newest driver is always best. Update if the driver is old; roll back if the black screen began immediately after a driver update.
- Identify the GPU in Settings → System → About, Task Manager → Performance, or Device Manager → Display adapters.
- Download the driver from the manufacturer’s official site:
- Install the version appropriate for the GPU and Windows edition, then restart the PC.
- If the issue followed an update, open Device Manager → Display adapters → your GPU → Properties → Driver → Roll Back Driver, when available.
Microsoft recommends updating or rolling back display drivers for blank-screen problems. Activision’s driver-version recommendations are date-sensitive, so use its current troubleshooting page as guidance rather than treating old version numbers as permanently current. Older NVIDIA Maxwell and Pascal cards may also no longer have current Game Ready driver support.

5. Reset fullscreen, HDR, resolution, and monitor settings
If the problem started after changing resolution, refresh rate, HDR, fullscreen, upscaling, or the monitor setup, isolate the display configuration:
- Press
Alt + Enterto switch modes. - Use
Alt + Tab, then return to Warzone. - Disconnect secondary monitors temporarily.
- Set Windows to the monitor’s native resolution and a standard refresh rate.
- Disable HDR temporarily.
- Once the menu is accessible, use borderless windowed mode.
- Change one graphics option at a time.
Borderless mode can be easier to recover from than exclusive fullscreen, although it may change latency or performance. HDR, high-refresh displays, adapters, capture cards, and unusual multi-monitor combinations can make a display transition look like a game crash.
6. Make sure Warzone uses the correct GPU
Laptops and systems with integrated and discrete graphics can launch a game on the wrong adapter. As an isolation test:
- Connect the monitor directly to the discrete GPU where applicable.
- Open Settings → System → Display → Graphics.
- Add Call of Duty if it is not listed.
- Set it to High performance.
- Temporarily disconnect extra monitors, capture cards, adapters, and unusual displays.
- Check the monitor’s input source and cable.
These steps do not guarantee a Warzone fix; they determine whether Windows is sending the game to the expected display and GPU.

7. Reset Warzone’s local graphics configuration
A corrupted or incompatible local setting can keep the game black after a display change. Avoid blindly deleting configuration folders: paths and filenames can change between Warzone builds and launchers.
- Close Warzone and its launcher.
- Find the current Call of Duty configuration folder using Activision’s current support documentation or the launcher’s installation information.
- Back up the folder.
- Rename it instead of deleting it.
- Relaunch Warzone so it can generate fresh settings.
- Reapply resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and graphics options gradually.
This preserves a recovery path and your original settings. Resetting configuration can fix a bad display mode, but it also removes custom graphics and control settings unless they were backed up.

Activision’s PC guidance lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 as supported and recommends keeping Windows current. Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025, however. Those statements are not contradictory: Activision may still list Windows 10 as compatible, while Microsoft no longer provides normal support for that operating system.
Install pending Windows updates, restart, and check Activision’s live Warzone PC system requirements. Do not rely on a copied minimum-specification list because requirements and supported configurations can change.

9. Use clean boot or Safe Mode only for advanced isolation
If Warzone works after closing background software but you cannot identify the culprit, a Windows clean boot can isolate startup services. It temporarily changes normal startup behavior, so record what you disable and restore it afterward.
Safe Mode is useful for determining whether Windows can operate with limited drivers and services. Warzone should not be expected to run normally in Safe Mode. If the desktop is also blank, use Microsoft’s Startup Settings and Safe Mode instructions rather than continuing to reinstall the game.
10. Check Known Issues before reinstalling
Check Activision’s Warzone Known Issues page before taking destructive or time-consuming steps. It tracks issues under investigation, resolved issues, and platform-specific problems. The page captured for this guide was updated July 29, 2026, but its contents can change.
Do not assume a current update is broken unless Activision’s live page or an official announcement confirms it. If the page does not list your symptom, continue with the local troubleshooting steps and report the problem if it persists.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11When should you reinstall Warzone?
Reinstalling is a last resort. It is reasonable after launcher repair or file verification fails, the installation is demonstrably damaged, and configuration or driver isolation has not helped. It is unlikely to fix a black screen affecting Windows, multiple games, the monitor, or the GPU driver. Check Known Issues first because a reinstall cannot repair a server-side or game-wide bug.
What not to do
- Do not use registry cleaners or download unofficial DLL files.
- Do not permanently disable antivirus protection.
- Do not repeatedly hard-shutdown the PC as a routine fix.
- Do not delete configuration folders or shader data without a backup and a specific reason.
- Do not apply unexplained launch commands copied from random posts.
- Do not downgrade drivers automatically if the issue began after a game update rather than a driver update.
Submit a crash report if the problem remains
If Warzone still goes black, crashes, or becomes unresponsive, use Activision’s PC Crash Report process through its PC troubleshooting page. Include:
- GPU model and driver version
- Windows version
- Battle.net, Steam, or Xbox app
- Whether shader preloading completed
- Whether overlays and tuning utilities were disabled
- When the problem began and whether it followed a game or driver update
- Whether other games or the Windows desktop are affected
- Crash logs, screenshots, or error messages when the form permits them
That information helps distinguish a Warzone-specific rendering failure from a broader Windows, driver, or hardware problem.
