HP’s December 2025 HyperX OMEN laptop leak was substantially accurate. HP officially announced the OMEN MAX 16, OMEN 16 and OMEN 15 at CES 2026, confirming Core Ultra and Ryzen AI platforms, OLED display options, RTX graphics, OMEN AI, high-polling-rate keyboards and self-cleaning cooling. The important update is that the final range is broader than the original report: the OMEN MAX 16 and OMEN 15 both appear with Intel and AMD configurations, and specifications vary substantially by region and SKU.

From exclusive report to official product family

Windows Latest reported on December 29, 2025 that HP was preparing three HyperX-branded gaming laptops for CES 2026:

  • HyperX OMEN MAX 16
  • HyperX OMEN 16
  • HyperX OMEN 15

The report described Intel Panther Lake/Core Ultra processors, AMD Ryzen AI options, OLED panels, Nvidia RTX graphics, OMEN AI optimization, self-cleaning fans and HyperAction keyboards with high polling rates. It also warned that the listed specifications represented individual configurations rather than complete product families.

That qualification proved important. In its January 5, 2026 CES announcement, HP confirmed the three-model direction and the HyperX branding, but the retail range ultimately included more processor and GPU combinations than the early report suggested.

What HP officially confirmed

HP’s announcement confirmed:

  • HyperX OMEN MAX 16, OMEN 16 and OMEN 15 laptops.
  • Intel Core Ultra and next-generation AMD Ryzen AI processors.
  • Up to an RTX 5090 Laptop GPU in the OMEN MAX 16.
  • Up to 300W total platform power in the MAX 16.
  • OMEN AI performance optimization.
  • High-polling-rate HyperAction keyboards.
  • Self-cleaning fans and internal cooling improvements.

HP describes the MAX 16’s 300W platform ceiling as a 50W, or 20 percent, increase over the previous generation. That figure is a platform-level claim, not a guarantee that every MAX 16 configuration operates at 300W in every mode.

HP also markets OMEN AI as capable of delivering up to 42 percent higher FPS in supported games such as Fortnite. This is HP’s maximum claim, not an independently verified average. The feature can change game settings, power modes, resolution or image-quality options, so any improvement depends on the game, hardware, drivers, baseline settings and the performance mode selected. HP’s CES showcase does not establish a universal hardware-performance uplift.

HyperX OMEN MAX 16: the flagship split between Intel and AMD

The MAX 16 is the clearest example of why the model name alone is not enough. HP’s final product pages show separate Intel and AMD versions with different top-end GPU ceilings.

Configuration Processor ceiling GPU ceiling Display and other headline specifications
OMEN MAX 16 Intel Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus RTX 5090 Laptop GPU, 24GB GDDR7 2.5K OLED, up to 240Hz, 0.2ms; up to 64GB DDR5-6400; up to 2TB PCIe Gen5 SSD
OMEN MAX 16 AMD AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 475 RTX 5080 Laptop GPU, 16GB 2.5K OLED, up to 240Hz; highlighted configuration with 125W CPU and 175W GPU

The Intel model is the one associated with HP’s RTX 5090 ceiling. The AMD MAX 16 is not simply the same laptop with a different processor: HP lists it with an RTX 5080 maximum and an Unleashed Mode that can raise total platform power to as much as 250W in the highlighted configuration. HP’s AMD product page identifies the CPU/GPU allocation as 125W plus 175W.

HP’s broader catalog lists the MAX 16 with a 16-inch-class WQXGA OLED panel, 48–240Hz variable refresh, HDR support and 100 percent DCI-P3 coverage. The listed weight is approximately 5.92 pounds, or 2.68 kilograms, before considering the power adapter. That is a desktop-replacement profile rather than an ultraportable one.

Cooling is central to the MAX 16’s positioning. The system uses OMEN Tempest Cooling PRO or related self-cleaning cooling technology, with the high power limits intended to sustain demanding CPU and GPU workloads. The likely trade-offs are greater heat, fan noise, adapter bulk and lower battery life during gaming or rendering.

  • 【Processor & Operating System】AMD Ryzen 9 8940HX processor & Windows 11 Pro
  • 【Display】16" 2K IPS Display with 144 Hz refresh rate
  • 【Graphics】NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 Laptop GPU
  • 【Tech Specs】1 USB Type-C (10Gbps signaling rate, USB Power Delivery, DisplayPort 1.4, HP Sleep and Charge), 1 USB Type-A (10Gbps signaling rate), 2 USB Type-A (5Gbps signaling rate), 1 RJ-45, 1 Headphone/microphone combo, 1 AC Smart pin, 1 HDMI 2.1, Wi-Fi 6E (2x2) and Bluetooth 5.3 wireless card

Who should consider the MAX 16?

Choose it when maximum laptop graphics performance, high-refresh OLED gaming, local creation workloads or sustained rendering matter more than price, weight and quiet operation. The Intel/RTX 5090 configuration is the obvious flagship choice, while the AMD/RTX 5080 version makes more sense when Ryzen AI features or the specific configuration’s performance profile is preferable.

An RTX 5090-equipped laptop is not automatically good value for every player. At 1080p, or on a lower-refresh external display, the extra GPU tier may provide less practical benefit than its price suggests.

HyperX OMEN 16: the most configuration-sensitive model

The OMEN 16 sits between the flagship MAX 16 and the smaller OMEN 15, but it is not one uniform specification. HP support documentation identifies the HyperX OMEN 16-am2000 series with a March 2026 release month and lists a wide selection of processors:

  • Intel Core Ultra 9 386H
  • Intel Core Ultra 7 356H
  • Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus
  • Intel Core Ultra 7 270HX Plus
  • Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX
  • Intel Core Ultra 7 255HX and 251HX
  • Some prior-generation Intel Core i9 and i7 options, depending on configuration

The same documentation lists Intel AI Boost capabilities ranging from 13 NPU TOPS on some HX parts to 50 NPU TOPS on the 386H and 356H parts. That range reflects materially different processor designs and power profiles.

The original report described the OMEN 16 as reaching a next-generation Intel Core Ultra processor or Ryzen 9 9955HX, an RTX 5070, up to 64GB of DDR5-5600 memory, up to 2TB of PCIe Gen4 storage and a 2.5K 165Hz OLED panel. Those should remain labeled as reported configurations rather than treated as universal specifications.

A buyer comparing a Core Ultra 9 386H OMEN 16 with an HX-based version may be comparing different sustained performance, battery, cooling and upgrade characteristics. Check the full SKU before comparing it with a MAX 16 or OMEN 15.

HyperX OMEN 15: RTX 5070-class gaming in a smaller package

HP lists both AMD and Intel OMEN 15 variants. The AMD page specifies:

  • Up to AMD Ryzen AI 7 450
  • Up to an RTX 5070 Laptop GPU with 8GB GDDR7
  • Up to 32GB of DDR5 memory
  • Up to 1TB PCIe Gen5 NVMe storage
  • Up to a 3K OLED display at 120Hz
  • Up to 170W total platform power in Unleashed Mode
  • OMEN Tempest Cooling and OMEN AI

HP’s Intel page identifies an OMEN 15 configuration with up to a Core Ultra 9 386H, DDR5-5200 memory in the highlighted configuration and a HyperAction keyboard. HP’s CES materials associate the family with RTX 5070 graphics, a 3K 120Hz OLED panel, a 0.2ms response time and an 8000Hz keyboard polling rate, but those features must be checked against the exact product listing.

The 3K OLED is attractive for sharp desktop work and single-player games, but it is not automatically the best esports panel. Competitive players may prefer a lower resolution that is easier for an RTX 5070-class GPU to drive at very high frame rates. A 120Hz ceiling is also a different priority from the MAX 16’s 240Hz option.

Who should consider the OMEN 15?

The OMEN 15 is the more sensible direction for buyers who want RTX 5070-class gaming, a relatively compact chassis and an OLED panel without moving to the MAX 16’s extreme power envelope. It is also the model to examine when price and everyday portability matter more than maximum sustained performance.

What happened to “Panther Lake”?

“Panther Lake” was the pre-launch platform terminology used by the original report. HP’s final documentation is more useful for buyers because it lists retail processor names such as Core Ultra 9 386H, Core Ultra 7 356H, Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus and Core Ultra 9 275HX.

Do not assume that every Core Ultra processor listed across the OMEN family is Panther Lake. The accurate formulation is that the leak associated the unreleased Intel platform with Panther Lake, while HP’s retail pages identify the actual processors and configurations now offered.

Ryzen AI does not automatically mean more gaming FPS

Ryzen AI laptops combine conventional CPU cores with an NPU, or neural processing unit. These components have different jobs:

  • CPU cores: handle general application and game workloads.
  • GPU: performs most rasterization, ray tracing and other graphics work.
  • NPU: accelerates supported AI tasks such as camera effects, noise suppression, framing and application-specific inference.

An NPU can make a supported AI workload more efficient, but it does not replace the GPU and does not guarantee higher game performance. Benefits depend on software support, drivers, power limits and whether the application actually uses the NPU. HP itself qualifies NPU performance according to software, configuration and third-party support.

For a gaming purchase, compare the GPU model and configured wattage first. Choose Ryzen AI for its platform features or for software that benefits from its NPU—not simply because the label contains “AI.”

OMEN AI and Unleashed Mode

OMEN AI is an automated optimization tool in HP’s OMEN software ecosystem. HP says it analyzes the user’s system and game, then applies personalized settings intended to maximize FPS. In practice, that may involve graphics quality, resolution, power profiles, performance modes or related system settings.

That convenience comes with compromises. Automatic optimization may favor frame rate over image quality, and its recommendations may not suit every game or player. Users who want predictable latency, consistent visual quality or manual control should retain their own settings and compare results rather than treating the “up to 42 percent” claim as a benchmark.

Unleashed Mode is different: it is primarily a power and performance mode. HP lists up to 250W on the highlighted AMD MAX 16 configuration and up to 170W on the OMEN 15 AMD. These figures are not interchangeable with the MAX 16 family-wide 300W claim; they describe different products, configurations or operating modes.

What high power limits mean in practice

Higher power ceilings can improve sustained CPU and GPU performance, high-refresh 1440p or 1600p gaming, streaming and creation workloads. They can also reduce the need for manual power tuning.

The costs are equally important:

  • More heat and fan noise.
  • Heavier systems and larger power adapters.
  • Shorter battery life during demanding workloads.
  • Greater differences between Balanced, Performance and Unleashed modes.
  • Potentially poor value when the display resolution or refresh rate does not allow the GPU to be used fully.

Independent testing is still needed to establish sustained wattage, noise, temperatures, battery life, fan-cleaning effectiveness, OLED behavior and OMEN AI results across games. HP’s power figures and FPS claims are useful product information, but they are not substitutes for comparable testing.

OLED, refresh rate and everyday trade-offs

OLED panels offer strong contrast, fast response and wide color coverage, making them appealing for both games and creation work. Buyers should still consider image-retention and burn-in precautions, especially when using static desktop elements for long periods. Check HP’s current warranty and panel policy for the exact region and SKU.

Refresh rate should match the workload. A 240Hz panel is valuable when the system and game can produce very high frame rates, particularly in competitive titles. A 3K 120Hz panel may be preferable for sharper general-use content and cinematic games. Neither is universally superior, and the GPU’s configured power limit matters more than the GPU name alone.

What to check before ordering

  1. Exact CPU: “Core Ultra” and “Ryzen AI” cover multiple processor classes.
  2. GPU and wattage: confirm the specific RTX model and its configured power limit.
  3. Panel: verify OLED versus IPS, resolution, refresh rate, HDR support and response time.
  4. Memory: check capacity, speed and whether the modules are upgradeable.
  5. Storage: confirm drive capacity, PCIe generation and the number of M.2 slots.
  6. Power hardware: check battery capacity and charger wattage if portability matters.
  7. Software: verify that OMEN AI, Unleashed Mode and the advertised keyboard polling rate apply to the exact SKU and region.
  8. Support: review local warranty, returns and service terms.

HP’s support documentation warns that components vary by country and configuration. Use the regional HP Shop listing rather than the family name or a headline specification table when confirming the final price and feature set.

Verdict

The exclusive report was directionally right and was later validated by HP, but the final story is more nuanced than the leak. The OMEN MAX 16 is a high-power flagship with an Intel/RTX 5090 path and an AMD/RTX 5080 path. The OMEN 16 is a flexible middle model whose processor and display options require careful SKU checking. The OMEN 15 targets mainstream RTX 5070-class gaming with Intel and AMD variants, including a sharp 3K 120Hz OLED option.

For maximum performance, look at the Intel MAX 16 configuration with the RTX 5090 ceiling. For Ryzen AI features without that GPU requirement, examine the AMD MAX 16. For a more balanced purchase, compare exact OMEN 16 and OMEN 15 configurations—not just their model numbers. The final decision should be based on GPU wattage, panel, memory, storage, cooling and regional support as much as the processor branding.
