The result tells you whether one site, Firefox, or the internet connection is responsible. Clear Firefox data for a site-specific timeout, check proxy and security permissions when another browser works, and investigate the network when every browser fails.
Identify which connection is failing
Firefox’s “The connection has timed out” message means the browser did not receive a response from the requested server within the allowed time. It does not, by itself, prove that Firefox, your computer, or the website is broken. Use two quick comparisons before making changes.

- In Firefox, open a different reliable site, such as
https://www.google.comorhttps://www.mozilla.org. - Open the original address in another browser installed on the same device.
- Check whether another device on the same network can reach the internet.
| What you observe | Most likely scope | First action | Layer to investigate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Only one or a few sites time out | The site, its server, or Firefox data for that site | Clear Firefox cookies and temporary cache | Site availability or browser cache |
| The site works in another browser but not Firefox | Firefox-specific configuration | Check Firefox proxy settings | Proxy, permissions, or offline mode |
| Every browser fails | Internet connection or local network | Check the device, router or access point, and another device | Network connection, DNS, or restricted ports |
This scope test also prevents a common mistake: changing system networking when the website is temporarily unavailable, or clearing Firefox data when the entire network is offline.
When only one or a few websites time out
Clear Firefox cookies and temporary cached files
Mozilla lists “The connection has timed out,” interrupted connections, and reset connections among errors that can be caused by Firefox cache data. Clearing the relevant data is the least disruptive first fix, although it can sign you out of sites and remove saved site preferences.

- Open the Firefox menu.
- Choose History, then Clear recent history….
- Set When to Everything.
- Select Cookies and site data and Temporary cached files and pages.
- Click Clear.
- Close and reopen the affected page.
Use the exact “Everything” range if the timeout has persisted; a shorter range can leave the damaged or stale entry in place. If you need to preserve logins on unrelated sites, remove data for the affected site through Firefox’s site-data controls instead of clearing all sites.
Retry later if the server is unavailable
If the timeout remains after clearing cookies and cache, Mozilla says the website itself may be unavailable or overloaded. Try the address again later and compare it with another unrelated site. Repeated retries cannot repair a server that is not accepting connections, so avoid changing Firefox settings until the site becomes reachable elsewhere.
When the site works in another browser
Check Firefox’s proxy setting
A proxy configured in Firefox can prevent a page from reaching its server even while another browser works normally. Mozilla places this check in Firefox’s network settings.

- Open the Firefox menu and choose Settings.
- Stay in General and scroll to Network Settings.
- Click Settings… (the control may be labelled Configure proxy).
- If you do not use a proxy and do not recognise one configured there, select No Proxy.
- Save the change and reload the page.
Do not select No Proxy if your employer, school, VPN, or managed network requires a proxy. Ask the network administrator for the correct address, port, and authentication details instead. A wrong proxy can make every site fail in Firefox, while a correctly configured proxy may be essential on a managed network.
Check whether an extension or private-network setting is involved
If the timeout occurs only in Firefox and the proxy setting is appropriate, temporarily test the page with connection-changing extensions disabled. This is a diagnostic step: re-enable extensions one at a time after the page works so you can identify the one that changes traffic. Keep any extension required by your organisation enabled and follow its administrator’s instructions.
When every browser fails
Check the device and local network
Mozilla classifies a failure in every browser as probably an internet-connection problem. Check that the affected device is connected to the intended Wi-Fi or Ethernet network, then inspect the router or access point’s status indicators and administration page if you have access. Test another device on the same network.

- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
- If another device also cannot reach sites, concentrate on the connection or access point rather than Firefox.
- If other devices work but this device does not, inspect its network connection and system network configuration.
- If only one website fails on every device, the site or its upstream service may be unavailable.
Hardware replacement is not a universal fix for a timeout. Consider a network adapter, router, or cabling change only after these comparisons show a persistent local-network fault and you have checked the service or network administrator’s guidance.

Mozilla lists offline mode as a possible cause of pages failing to load. Check Firefox’s menus for a Work Offline setting and ensure it is disabled. The exact menu placement can vary by Firefox release and operating system; the important result is that Firefox must be allowed to make live network requests. Reload the page after changing the setting.
Review firewall, antivirus, anti-spyware, and privacy permissions
Security and privacy applications can interfere with Firefox’s permission to open network connections. If a security application has a rule for Firefox, remove the existing Firefox permission and add it again when appropriate. This forces the application to create a fresh rule instead of continuing to use a stale path or executable entry.

- Open the security application’s firewall or application-permission controls.
- Locate the existing rule for Firefox.
- Remove that rule rather than broadly disabling protection.
- Start Firefox and approve the new network-access prompt if the security application displays one.
- Retry the page.
Use the security product’s own documentation for its interface and preserve protection while testing. If the timeout disappears only when a security feature is disabled, restore protection and create a narrowly scoped Firefox exception instead of leaving the feature off.
Check the address and port
A restricted or incorrect port can make a specific address fail. An address that includes a port number, such as :23, is asking Firefox to connect to that service rather than the website’s usual port. If the port was typed incorrectly or copied from an old instruction, remove it and use the site’s correct address. Do this only when you know the address is wrong; removing a port that a legitimate service requires will not solve the problem.
- Compare the address with the site’s current official address or a known-good link.
- Check for an accidental port suffix, spelling error, or extra characters.
- Do not bypass a port restriction imposed by a workplace, school, or network administrator.
Consider DNS when names resolve incorrectly
DNS translates a domain name into an IP address. A corrupt local DNS cache or a site whose IP address has changed can send Firefox toward the wrong server, producing a timeout even though the domain name looks correct.

- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Compare the failure pattern: several domains failing after a network change points more toward DNS than a single overloaded site.
- Check whether another browser or device on the same network resolves the same domain successfully.
- When the evidence points to name resolution, follow the DNS-cache flush instructions for your operating system and network environment.
- Retry the domain after the cache has been flushed.
A DNS flush is not a substitute for correcting an incorrect DNS server, proxy, or blocked port. If the problem returns immediately, check the network’s DNS settings or ask the network administrator whether the domain has recently moved.
Why Chrome can work while Firefox times out
Different browsers can use different proxy settings, extensions, permission records, and cached data. Therefore, a page loading in Chrome does not prove that the website is healthy for every connection, nor does it prove that Firefox is damaged. The comparison narrows the search to Firefox’s proxy, offline state, security permission, extension, or stored site data. Apply those checks before changing router or operating-system settings.
A safe order for troubleshooting
Use this sequence when you are unsure which branch applies:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open another site in Firefox and the affected site in another browser.
- If only the affected site fails, clear cookies and temporary cached files, then retry later if the server may be unavailable.
- If another browser works, inspect Settings > General > Network Settings > Settings… and choose No Proxy only when you do not use a proxy.
- Confirm Firefox is not set to Work Offline.
- Re-create Firefox’s permission in the firewall or security application instead of leaving protection disabled.
- Inspect the address for an incorrect port such as
:23. - If multiple domains fail, follow your operating system’s DNS-cache flush guidance and check DNS settings.
- If every browser and device fails, investigate the internet connection, router or access point, and service status.
When to stop changing settings
Stop troubleshooting Firefox when the evidence points outside the browser. A timeout that affects every browser and another device is a network or service incident. A timeout limited to one website after cache clearing is likely on that website’s side; Mozilla Support’s article Websites don’t load – troubleshoot and fix error messages, updated June 19, 2026, states that if clearing Firefox cookies and cache does not work, “it’s probably a sign that there is a problem with the website itself.” The same article says that when all browsers fail, “This is probably a problem with your Internet connection.” Record which sites, devices, and browsers fail before contacting your internet provider, site operator, or network administrator; that information identifies the failing layer faster.
