Start with Divi → Support Center → Safe Mode, then retry the builder. Safe Mode temporarily turns off third-party plugins, the child theme, and custom code for your logged-in session. If the builder loads there, the warning is almost certainly caused by a component outside Divi; turn Safe Mode off and reactivate plugins one at a time until the failure returns.

If Safe Mode does not help, inspect Divi’s Support Center system status and full report, then check the server’s PHP version and limits. Elegant Themes recommends PHP 8.0 or newer and lists minimum optimal values of 128M memory, 64M post data, 120 seconds execution time, 64M uploads, 60 seconds input time, and 1,000 input variables. Clear every relevant cache after changes. Only after those checks should you test permalinks and matching HTTPS URLs.

What the Divi Builder timeout warning means
A timeout is not a diagnosis by itself. It means the Divi Builder could not finish loading because an error or resource limit interrupted the request. Elegant Themes describes the condition as occurring “when the Divi Builder fails to load due to an error” (August 8, 2024). The error may come from a plugin, child theme, custom integration code, incompatible PHP version, low PHP memory, execution-time limits, malformed rewrite settings, or an HTTPS mismatch.
The safest troubleshooting order moves from reversible, user-specific tests to site-wide server changes. Safe Mode isolates code without changing what visitors see. PHP and web-server edits affect the whole site and may require your host. Keep a record of every setting you change so you can restore the previous value.

1. Run the Safe Mode isolation test
Open Safe Mode
- Sign in to WordPress with an administrator account.
- Open Divi → Support Center.
- Enable Safe Mode.
- Return to the page or post that was timing out and launch the Divi Builder again.
Safe Mode applies to the current logged-in session. It temporarily disables third-party plugins, the child theme, and custom code for that session; it does not permanently deactivate those components for visitors.
Interpret the result
- The builder works: a plugin, child-theme change, or custom code is conflicting with Divi. Leave Safe Mode enabled while you isolate the specific component.
- The builder still times out: the cause is more likely a server/PHP limit, a broader WordPress compatibility problem, corrupted files, a cache layer, or URL/rewrite configuration. Continue with the system and server checks below.
2. Isolate a plugin, child theme, or custom code conflict
Reactivate plugins one at a time
- Disable Safe Mode so your normal site configuration is restored.
- Open Plugins → Installed Plugins.
- Deactivate the plugins that were bypassed by Safe Mode, keeping a note of their original active/inactive state.
- Reactivate one plugin.
- Open the affected page and load the Divi Builder.
- Repeat for each plugin until the timeout returns.
The plugin activated immediately before the failure is the leading suspect. Deactivate it again and confirm that the builder recovers. Check that plugin’s documentation and support channel for a Divi or WordPress compatibility update before replacing it. Do not leave unrelated plugins disabled as a permanent “fix”; the one-at-a-time method identifies the component while preserving the rest of the site.
Test the child theme and parent Divi theme
Safe Mode also bypasses the child theme and custom code. If every plugin passes, switch temporarily to the parent Divi theme in a maintenance window and test the builder. A child-theme template, function, or enqueue can break the builder even when the visible front end looks normal. Restore the child theme after the test and review its recent changes.
Review Divi custom code
- Open Divi → Theme Options → Integration.
- Inspect code in the head, body, and other integration fields.
- Temporarily remove or disable recently added snippets, scripts, and tracking integrations, preserving a copy outside WordPress.
- Save, clear the relevant caches, and retry the builder.
Restore snippets individually after the test. A script that runs on every administrator page can interfere with the builder even if it does not affect public pages.

3. Read Divi’s Support Center diagnostics
Open Divi → Support Center and review both the system status and the full report. Look for the PHP version, memory and execution limits, input limits, upload and post limits, active theme, plugin versions, and any reported file or configuration errors. Copy the full report before contacting hosting or Elegant Themes support; it gives them the environment details needed to reproduce the failure.
Compare the reported values with the minimum optimal directives below. A value shown in a hosting panel may not be the value available to PHP requests, so use Divi’s report as the effective check.

4. Verify PHP version and resource limits

Elegant Themes’ hosting guidance also specifies PHP 8.0 or newer, a 120-second PHP maximum execution time, and at least 128MB of PHP memory. These are compatibility targets, not a promise that every timeout disappears once they are met; a conflicting extension or malformed request can still fail.
Check the version before changing anything
- In the Divi Support Center, record the PHP version and directives from the system status.
- Compare them with the table.
- Check whether your host offers a PHP version selector and a PHP-options editor in its control panel.
- If the panel does not expose a directive, ask the hosting provider to change it and provide the Divi full report.
WordPress identifies incompatible PHP versions, memory limits, plugin conflicts, theme compatibility, and corrupted files as common causes of errors. Maximum execution time is often controlled at the host or web-server level, so a WordPress administrator may not be able to raise it from the dashboard.

Change limits with the least risk
Make one server change at a time, note the old and new values, and test the builder after each change. If your host applies limits per site, confirm that the change affects the same PHP version and site pool shown in Divi’s report. If the host refuses or cannot raise a limit, request that its support team review the timeout and attach the full report rather than repeatedly editing WordPress files.
5. Clear every cache layer and update the stack
Cached JavaScript, CSS, REST responses, or HTML can preserve a failed builder request after the underlying problem is fixed. After changing PHP settings or updating software, clear the layers that apply to your installation:

- WordPress caching or optimization plugin cache.
- Managed-host or server-side page and object caches.
- CDN cache, if the site uses one.
Then confirm that WordPress core, Divi, the active theme, and all plugins are current and mutually compatible. Apply updates in a maintenance window, keep a backup, and test the builder after each update group. If the timeout began immediately after one update, roll back only that component through your host’s backup or the vendor’s supported rollback procedure while you investigate.
6. Test permalinks when normal diagnostics pass
If Safe Mode, conflict isolation, PHP values, updates, and cache clearing do not resolve the warning, test whether rewrite rules are involved.

- Open Settings → Permalinks.
- Select Plain and save the change.
- Retry the Divi Builder on the affected page.
- If the builder now works, identify why the original structure is failing, then restore your intended permalink structure and save again.
Plain permalinks are a diagnostic setting, not a recommended permanent structure for most sites. Restoring the original structure after testing regenerates the rewrite rules that WordPress uses for normal URLs.
7. Confirm WordPress uses matching HTTPS URLs
- Open Settings → General.
- Check WordPress Address (URL) and Site Address (URL).
- Ensure both use the correct protocol for the live site, normally
https://when SSL is installed. - Save only after verifying the exact domain and protocol; an incorrect URL can lock you out or create redirect loops.
Elegant Themes notes that installing SSL after content was published can leave protocol references that trigger errors. A qualified administrator should determine whether a migration or an SSL-helper plugin such as Really Simple SSL is appropriate for the site; adding a plugin without checking the existing certificate and redirects can create another conflict.

Symptoms that point to different causes
It works only in Safe Mode
Prioritize plugin, child-theme, and Integration-code isolation. Do not raise PHP limits first unless the Support Center report also shows values below Divi’s targets; Safe Mode has already demonstrated that the basic server request can complete without the bypassed components.
It fails for every administrator and every page
Compare PHP version and limits with the table, inspect the full report for errors, and ask the host to review execution time and server logs. A global failure is less consistent with one page’s layout data and more consistent with environment or compatibility conditions.

Only one page or very large layout times out
Check post_max_size, max_input_vars, and memory_limit first. A page with many modules can submit a larger request than a simple page. If all values meet the targets, isolate plugins and custom code on that page before changing server settings.
The builder began failing after an SSL or domain change
Verify both WordPress URLs, inspect redirects, and test permalinks. Do not repeatedly switch between HTTP and HTTPS; establish the canonical protocol and have a qualified administrator correct migrated content or certificate-related references.
The warning remains after a successful fix
Clear browser, WordPress, CDN, and server caches again, then sign out and back in before retesting. An old script or cached response can make a corrected configuration appear broken.
Safe handoff to hosting or support
When you escalate, include the Divi Support Center full report, the exact page or action that times out, the time the problem began, recent plugin/theme/PHP changes, whether Safe Mode works, and the current values for all six directives. State whether Plain permalinks or matching HTTPS URLs changed the result. This prevents support from repeating generic steps and helps distinguish a code conflict from a server limit.
Ask the host specifically whether the reported PHP version is the one serving the affected site, whether max_execution_time is capped at the web-server or PHP-FPM layer, and whether server-side caching has been purged. If the host changes a value, record the previous setting and the time of the change.
