If Red Dead Redemption 2 fails to launch with an “EMP.dll not found” message, start by verifying the game files through the launcher where you installed it. For a legitimate Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, or Epic Games Store copy, verification is the safest first repair; if that fails, Rockstar’s next supported option is a clean reinstall. Rockstar’s reviewed support documentation does not identify EMP.dll as a standard RDR2 file or explain this specific error.
First, check where your copy of RDR2 was installed
This guide applies to a legitimate PC installation through Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, or Epic Games Store. Use the launcher that owns the installation to repair its files. Avoid replacing EMP.dll with a file downloaded from an unofficial site: a standalone DLL download is not an official Rockstar repair and may introduce a security risk.
Verify the game files in your launcher
Rockstar Games Launcher
- Open Rockstar Games Launcher and sign in.
- Select Settings.
- Under My installed games, select Red Dead Redemption 2.
- Select Verify Integrity and let the process finish.

Steam or Epic Games Store
Run the corresponding launcher’s game-file verification procedure for your RDR2 installation. Rockstar’s RDR2 PC troubleshooting guidance points players to the relevant platform instructions for Steam and Epic installations.

Restart the launcher and try again
When verification is complete, close and reopen the launcher, then start RDR2 from it. If the message still appears, make a note of its exact wording and the launcher used for the installation before moving on.
Try a clean reinstall if verification does not help
Rockstar’s clean-install procedure requires backing up Story Mode saves before uninstalling. The default save folder listed by Rockstar is DocumentsRockstar GamesRed Dead Redemption 2. Follow Rockstar’s instructions carefully; the procedure also removes specified temporary Social Club files, restarts Windows, and reinstalls the game using an account with administrator permissions.

- Back up your Story Mode saves from the default folder above, if that is where your saves are stored.
- Uninstall RDR2 through the launcher that manages the installation.
- Remove the temporary Social Club files specified in Rockstar’s clean-install instructions.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall RDR2 using an account with administrator permissions, following Rockstar’s procedure.
Be cautious if antivirus software flags a file
Community discussions have associated EMP.dll reports with unofficial altered game builds and antivirus quarantine, but those reports are anecdotal and do not establish the cause of every error. Rockstar’s reviewed support pages do not document EMP.dll specifically. If antivirus software flags a file in a legitimate installation, review the alert with your security vendor and verify the game through its official launcher. Do not blindly restore a quarantined file, permanently disable protection, or exclude the entire game folder.
