If FINAL FANTASY XIV closes with “Unexpected Error Has Occurred. Exiting Final Fantasy XIV.(6d),” there is no confirmed universal 6D fix in the available official guidance. Start with a Windows restart and account-permission check, then work through launcher-specific file checks and Square Enix’s general crash troubleshooting. Change one thing at a time so you can tell what affects the error.
What the 6D error does—and does not—tell you
Historical Square Enix community forum posts show players reporting the 6D message, including around 2020 updates. Those reports establish that the error has occurred for other players; they do not identify a definitive cause or prove that any one workaround will resolve it. The official Square Enix guidance cited here covers Windows launcher startup and general game crashes, not a 6D-specific diagnosis.
Before troubleshooting, note exactly when the error appears: while opening the launcher, after selecting Play, during character or area loading, or after a patch. Also note whether you use the Steam or standalone Windows version; the file-check procedure differs.
Try these checks in order
1. Restart Windows and check your login permissions
- Close FINAL FANTASY XIV and its launcher completely, then restart Windows.
- Open the game through the launcher normally used for your account.
- Check that your Windows login has administrative permissions. Square Enix says a Windows user without administrative permissions may prevent its launcher from starting properly. That makes permissions worth checking, but does not establish them as the cause of a 6D error. See Square Enix’s Windows launcher startup FAQ.
2. If you use Steam, validate the installed files
Use Steam’s installed-game integrity check if files may be missing or damaged. In Steam, open Library, right-click FINAL FANTASY XIV, choose Properties, open Installed Files (called Local Files in some Steam versions), and select Verify integrity of game files. Let Steam finish, then try launching again. This checks the installation; Square Enix does not describe it as a guaranteed 6D repair. Its Steam crash and missing-files guidance recommends the integrity check for crashes, startup failures, or missing files.

3. Test display settings and graphics drivers
- Switch between windowed and full-screen display modes.
- Lower the resolution or graphical load, then see whether the error changes.
- Check for a current graphics driver from your GPU manufacturer and install it if appropriate.
These are general Square Enix crash checks, not confirmed 6D-specific fixes. Make one change at a time and record whether the point at which the game fails changes. See Square Enix’s Windows crash and abnormal-shutdown guidance.
4. Check for software or device conflicts
- Close nonessential background applications and test the game again.
- Check whether security software is interfering with the game or launcher. Do not leave protections disabled; if you need help adjusting them, use the software maker’s safe, supported settings.
- Temporarily disconnect nonessential peripherals, then reconnect them after testing.
Square Enix includes these checks in its general Windows crash guidance. If one changes the result, restore items one at a time to identify the relevant conflict rather than leaving unrelated software or devices disabled.

5. Reinstall only if simpler checks do not help
If corrupted game data remains plausible after the earlier checks, consider reinstalling through the appropriate launcher. Back up user configuration you want to preserve before removing or changing game folders. Reinstallation is a general recovery option in Square Enix’s crash guidance, not an established cure for error 6D.
